i got the dvd of the way up live, whilst the concert was superb my only gripe was the exclusion of the ending on the original recording it was beautiful and understated
Guitarists never get their full due in jazz. If this was done by a saxophonist, trumpeter or pianist they'd be raving about it like they did with Love Supreme, Kind of Blue or Bitches Brew. This is a ground breaking piece of work.
I saw the concert in June 2005 at Villa Franca Italy, near Verona, played during a moonlit night in the courtyard of a medieval castle surrounded by a moat...does anyone have any video from that magical night?? I recall it was a three hour concert, the first half The Way Up, the second half started with Pat alone, with each successive tune featuring one musician more until the entire PMG was on stage playing many many tunes from the PMG repertoire. Pure magic!
I have listened to this piece many many times and never grow tired of it. Pat and the band are playing on such an incredibly deeep and spiritual level that mere words do not
I saw this show live as I have seen at least 1 show from each every PMG tour since 1982 and I own this DVD and I cant pick 1 section over any other as they are all so incredible. There is the Pat Metheny Group and then there is everybody else....
Bummed that he is only touring with trio and quartet right now - saw him at a small venue in Easton PA years ago and he played 3+ hours straight - the best live performance I've seen.
Cant deny quality in this one straight on!!!

Steve Rodby's fretless bass is reminiscent of maestro Eberhard Weber who had a big influence on the sound of PMG

I saw this live in CT in 2005, OMG I was truly mesmerized. I was with my son who is a jazz musician. So glad I could share this experience with him.
