Actually, it's the common problem of the revolutionary. What to do with the leader (real or symbolic) of the old regime? If you kill them, you run the risk of turning them into martyrs but if you let them live, you run the risk of turning them into a rallying point of all supporters of the old regime. It's an unfortunate choice, but also necessary. Ideally, revolutions are not born from blood. Realistically, they have to be. Read about Robespierre if you don't believe me.

They were simply cowardly, cold bloodedly murdered because Lenin felt they where a threath to his new found power. There's no excuse for that.
