skip the books as there are thousands of websites and videos on good photography tips hints and tricks as with budget tools and effects to create effects which would otherwise cost 100s in the professional world,

depending on camera will differ from what quality and effect you can achieve

i would take a look at budget effects which show you how to recreate an image effect without having to buy expensive lenses and filters

in theory you can get great pics from any camera

By the way parker, great cam, it does pretty much everything and live view is only for pansies... Viewfinder is much faster.. And well thats the whole point of an SLR anyways, you get exactly what you see through the viewfinder!

@KatiexKIRA I agree that it is a good camera, but if you can afford it, then it would be much better to start off with the d5000 than the d3000. Both are entry level models, but the d5000 is a pretty major step up from the d3000 (in terms of features and overall quality, NOT in terms of difficulty), so again, if you have the extra $200 for it, the d5000 is a better choice whether it is his first or 15th dslr.

You are treating this camera like shit. First of all, zooming in and out so fast will not help the lifetime of it become any longer, and your pretty much trowing cables and manuals on the floor. Secondly, you don't really need to handle that camera around so much, nor handle it so poorly around in your hands the whole time. Seriously, put down some foam or something soft to put those components on, and dont take any of the lenses or batteries or cameras out until you are sure you are all set up.
