I would have stuck the tape just a little underneath the wing leading edge to avoid it being lifted off by the wind. This has actually happened on model planes covered with the iron on material. You only need to go under a few millimetres and it will be fine.
The trick with the foam actually works i covered my wingdragons wing in it and it never broke but i was doing that 5 years ago lol it was just a hairbrained attempt at fixing it and it work the wing lasted longer than the plane :) now i dont fly electrics i got a 5ft Cessna 0.91 Four stroke :D

that's how I'm trying to lean to do an inverted hover, if the plane is tipping to your left, do left rudder =).
