• They really need to re-release this video! Kirk has re-mastered both the Johnny Yes No mini-film & soundtrack and has also come out with new versions of both that became available as a sweet 4-disc package this past fall. He says that he wants to re-release the stuff they did for Virgin back in the mid-80s sometime this year. Hopefully he might consider 'Gasoline'?

  • like

  • I AM CRACKED DOWN EVERY DAY!!!!!!!

  • They are/were just plain facking weird man.

  • Awesome!!! - Collected Thoughts

  • cool!

  • Awesome music! Industrial ftw!

  • It's so good that you scream.

  • I've been a fan of the Cabs for over 30 years now, and have always wondered why they never broke in to the 'mainstream'. They had the sounds, and, as this video shows, had the looks. Too good for the masses. Possibly.

  • Gives me the shivers. Post 9/11 we are all losing our freedoms bit by bit.

  • Gritty, sinister, seductive, bizarre, sophisticated, cool. So good.

  • Awsome video, awsome music. i am a big fan of Cabaret Voltaire . . .

Thanks for the info about the video . . . this is real music . . .!!!

  • Now it's libia's turn...the more things change...

  • thenoblequran (Ctrl+Enter)

  • ...and now Libya

  • Awesome song/video. The Cabs were so ahead of their time.

  • crackdown....USA style

  • fukking great!!

  • Great song !

  • Politics aside, this is a great song from a time when electronic music made leaps and bounds over the mainstream crap of the day. This dark electronic sound complete with haunting video was the hallmark of CV.

  • Voodoo club in T.O. heavy darkness,

  • stop simply warning "youngsters"... ppl on this entire planet are living in a world of shit. if they feel they need to, let them decide their own fate.

  • dear youngsters-pls this could be anywhere,,and still..this is popmusic

and we´ve felt the terrors of know-how..

    DADA!

  • IMO the only song I ever need or want to hear

  • God i hate Mainstream music when i come back to the listen to such classics.

  • This is just the best dance track...faultless

  • I prefer album version without this extra pulsating bass . It is much more scary.

  • Poland never changed... it is very .........country

  • Poland has changed, I am a Pole, it actually pictures from the 70s of the 80 strikes of the twentieth century, the so-called communist era, when in opposition before the communist Solidarity was the peoples government led by the USSR (Soviet Union). These were very difficult and bad times for Polish citizens. Then I was a boy. But a lot has changed in this country. We are in the European Union

  • Poland has changed, I am a Pole, is actually photos from the strikes of the 70s-80s of the twentieth century from the time of the so-called communist, when in opposition of the "Solidarność" government dependent on the USSR (Soviet Union) was the "Solidarity". These were okrótne times. Then I was a little boy. But much has changed in the country. We are in the European Union

  • Mainstream music sucks now.

  • @noahbirdrevolution the ability DIY is great these days, however too much of anything is...you know...

  • @noahbirdrevolution and sucked in 1983, too, retard

  • @noahbirdrevolution

As it well has, since 1967.

  • Where acid jazz has failed me, Cabaret Voltaire has delivered the beats I've sought.

  • good bass riff....

  • Comment removed

  • Oh wow -Skinny Puppy obviously lifted the sounds and beat and some of the sections for "Testure".

I prefer testure as dance material but this is cool too.

  • @zzGRENDELzz Many SP borrow elements from tracks from CV.

SP first LP is technically a CV's LP if it wasn't for Nivek's voice.

I even noted that VX gas sampled elements from another CV theme, I think it was from the covenant album.

  • What the heck are you crazy YouTube people talking about?!

MIDI does not have a unique sound. Its merely a technology for storing and exchanging musical notes. And basically, it hasn't changed much at all since its release.

  • Cabs give me goose bumps, looooove them

  • @njanja85 second that, still makes my hair stand on end all these years later, not that I have much hair anymore :)

  • Bloody Good. Sounds fresh still.

  • midi locked to tape!

  • great track tho for me the album version is superior, the 12" version has no buildup as the strings come in straight away.

  • nice midimusic

  • You sure this is midi?

Since midi was released in 1983 and this song is 1985.

I'd say midi was expensive back in the days.

  • yeah almost all instr. are midi ...but no problem ......sounds like yamaha

  • I thought that midi in 80's would have sounded alot more primitive, but good to know.

  • @gombie . 80's midi was not "primitive", certainly a different style, but then again style is inpsired by technologies, and surroundings. As per price, in 1983 all synthesisers were expensive, be it midi or CV Gate. The tracks sound a lot like early digital machines (and I do not think they were CV controlled) and many recorded tapes synced to tempo and beat box.

  • @gombie not sure if anyone else has pointed out but this track is not 1985, it was definitely released in 1983, a double Aside 12" Just Fascination / The Crackdown. The video Gasoline In Your Eye containing the video for this track was released in 1985.

  • I am reasonably certain that Skinny Puppy were way to messed up on drugs at this point in their carreer to be able to borrow anything from anyone, let alone Cab Voltaire ;) But yes, now that you mention it... this DOES remind me of Testure

  • Does anyonek now if Thropbbing Gristle made a remix(es) of this song?

This song is the most inpired rack for Skinny Puppy, esspecially for the "Testure" track, you cna hear the resembles. Probably hrer where Industrial mixed whith elements of aPop was Carbaret Voltaire. Voltaire edoes allso good whith the use of those Industrial "signal" sonic wave sounds which get used alot in Industrial related music...

  • wow people go from talking about war and having to kill. and still people like to ramble about clothes.

    try to LEARN SOMETIHNG!!!

  • Agreed.

  • My uncle was there in ZOMO unit beatting people to dead,10 years later i was siting in BRDM for 3 days on the street waiting to get order to kill people. How diffrent are we??? 22 years later who we gonna kill this time?. One thing i certain music always survive no matter what we do and what we say. Cabaret voltaire you almost meet me on the other live side after i try to kill myself.

  • this video is taken from Poland from 1981.12.13.War State, almost two years long to 1983.Police hour.Write about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Coming to America soon . Obama change .

  • no matter who the puppet is... the average person must choose what they're going to do. listen to yourself and figure out what you care about. you'll know what to do. but remember, no matter what you choose, someone will hate you for it.

  • That's one of the best comments concerning life in general I've ever read on this channel. And it pretty sums up what Cabaret Voltaire were about. You can't please everyone all the time, can you? All you can do is please yourself, can't you? If you can't please yourself, you can't please your soul. Simple as that! Not everyone comes from the same background or thinks the same.

  • incredyble how these songs sounds like today, even better!the video is likes new!!We used to dance on this thwenty years ago

  • '83 & yeah!!!

  • very thoughtfullll. someone, sometimes,,,,, cracksdown.... in reality

  • 1982!

    unf*ckingbelievable!

no wonder they got bored with it all by the early 90's.

  • Why so glum? It's not like you flunked out of college and ended up sleeping in a sewer pipe in a city park. Just take your Ritalin and stop worrying about the government..

  • 4m 20s the 2 dancers haha cracks me up every time

  • Always interesting. Always innovative.

  • i love to get naked to this song oooooooh reminds me of my friend :D

  • i want to be your new friend hahahahahhahahhahahaah

TG invented a new political POV system called "Underground music speaks the truth"

  • If anybody knows where I can get sunglasses like Richard H. Kirk's in this video, please PM me.

  • Sheffield Market. Saturdays. Stall next to flowers and Butchers, guy turns up every 2nd week looks like Martin Rushent, he also specialises in clipping toenails in a very exact manner.

  • dear youngsters - pls acknowledge these were the streets of Poland in late 70s/early 80's, i've been there and felt the terror... never again!!!

  • @spadoowa Looks like the streets of the UK or US these days tbh. Did you see the G20 in Pittsburgh last year?

  • @Stagnant197 And Toronto Canada in the summer of 2010...

However "decent" you though Canada was, you are so wrong.

You know the world is shit when the "nice" places are turning to retaliation and protesting too.

  • @spadoowa a ile masz lat?

  • @spadoowa También se parece a las calles de Chile, en la misma época. (Like the streets of Chile at the same time)

  • Iran is now feeling the Crackdown

  • tssssssssss soy fan!!!

  • Wow, this video now looks like it could have been shot in the streets of Tehran.

loved this song as a kid, still sounds great today...

  • Yeah, waaaaayyyy before Skinny Puppy.

    These guys were revolutionary.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

  • NEWS EVERYONE!!!:

billie ray martin: the crackdown project

feat. maertini broes und stephen mallinder (of cabaret voltaire)

    song: the crackdown

Mal from Cabaret Voltaire is adding his vocals next week so the mix so far containes BRM's vocals only but is already creating a stir with Dj's like Radio 1's Olaf Zimmermann declaring himself a fan and getting ready for the first spins on his show. (...)

  • part 2

(...)The combination of BRM and the original Artist of 'The Crackdown' is raising more than a few happy eyebrows. The track was produced by BRM'a favourites: Maertini Broes, and is a dark and kicking tech-house fest. The tack will be remixed by Stephen Mallinder and his partner's new project: The Light Project. A release is planned for the next two months and is part of a wider project called: The Crackdown Project. (...)

  • part 3

(...)The next cover version from Cabaret Voltaires classic album 'TheCrackdown' will be 'Just Fascination' feat. Lusty Zanzibar.

    :-)

  • btw what is this news footage anyway?

  • Martial law in Poland in the early '80s.

  • thanks makes sense

  • without doubt

  • The stuff on the radio doesn't INSPIRE me to get philosophical OR join a cause (I volunteer in my community), surely music can have a deep impact on the mind.... as deep as the philosophical "satyr" Screwtape Letters written by C.S. Lewis I was just reading over my morning coffee. Many cultures (if not most) recognize the depth of the impact music has on our energy, minds, and spirits. Bet there's a composer or artist out there (or philosophical POINT OF VIEW) that you endorse, too, simply put..

  • For the same reason I'll always say the Cabs (and Matt Johnson of The The as well) are the best teachers I've ever had. They taught me things no one ever is going to teach me - how to accept things in everyday life, real sense of freedom, real history of human kind, the way of thinking...etc etc.

  • Comment removed

  • everyone, please stop waxing philosophical over entertainers... it's just music. just enjoy it. if you don't enjoy it, then don't listen to it. there is no point in treating it like it's a cause or something. i like this music, but it's not a lifestyle. it's no more significant than any music you hear on the radio. if you want to get "deep", then study real philosophy or join a cause. otherwise, just enjoy the music.

  • great way to look at it i like the way you think cheers!

  • yuor right, too bad u got down rated beucase theres retarded oldskoolers who dont know that Carbarat Voltaire are awesome course they invented industrial music.

And srsly WTF, this is 100% like Skinny Pupy Testure!

  • Comment removed

  • Doesn't sound anything like Testure, dumbass.

  • Trent Reznor doesn't even deserve to be compared to this (re: shitfest talk below)

  • agree with previous comment saw cabs forum kentish town mid 80,s awesome live. big influence on many industrial techno groups.

  • Here it is folks - the greatest music video ever made! Watch those nightmare images combined with truly great editing and music that was and still is far ahead of its time. This puts to shame trash like NIN. Enough said.

  • Cabaret Voltaire and their overall impact on everyday life and culture in general should be introduced as a sole subject in schools/universities immediately.

They deserved the monument of culture whatever it was (a statue, a hall, ...etc) as well. I think it would be the biggest recognition for them of them all. Bloody recording industry's pointless awards are totally irrelevant in their case.

  • you single?

  • The past informs the future.

  • If you know the past, you'll understand the present and easily predict the future as well. Isn't that right?

  • hey its good to enjoy what you like but lisatopp has a point

  • yeah

  • Great to see/hear this after so long. I had the tape at the time, sadly it's long lost.

  • oh i remember this well. ignited my love affair that lasted decades. still stands the test of time. one of the best shows I've seen was them at the Ritz in NYC in the late 80's. Perfect in every sense.

  • i have this on original bleedin VHS tape somewhere fffs! :p FLA and Front 242 (amongst many others) owes a LOT to these Sheffield blokes :D

  • This is easily the greatest video ever!!! Great music as well as lame boring bands such as NIN would be nowhere without CV... Look at those quick cuts editing with nightmare images - simple isn't it?

  • Cab Volt was a fine fucking band!!!!

  • Could have done without the leather trousers tbh.

  • Taking that in galetski's words this video is a totally dark totalitarian art, and that leather wear makes people look stronger and more serious I think the leather trousers are just okay with me here. Even Richard H. Kirk released a bloody superb single entitled "Leather Hands" together with the Box's Peter Hope in 1985. Cabs loved the leather in those days.

  • If you think leather trousers make people look more serious I'll have to differ. Even in 1982....

  • I do know what you meant by that! Leather trousers were hip in the late '50s when rock'n'roll first started (which was OK) whereas in the '80s they seemed (a bit) funny, didn't they? But I still like to think that leather wear looks powerful and very serious at some particular occasions anyway. That's only my opinion (again)...

  • Elvis comeback-68,in which he had his best costume, leather,in black-looking very cool and people loved it,but he could were anything;singing+moves makes crowd go crazy;not just women...

  • Yes, Elvis looked fabulous dressed like that at the time indeed, didn't he? That legendary performance where he was surrounded by the audience while he was sitting on the chair, and singing and playing guitar dressed in the leather is one of the most effective performances I've ever seen.

What I was trying to say was that there's one certain general opinion which says that after the late '50s rock'n'roll boom you didn't have to wear the leather to prove your seriousness anymore at all. (...)

  • (...) All you had to do was to prove your seriousness in your head standing by your every lyric. I don't agree with that at all. Cabaret Voltaire were dressed in their videos right the way they really should even if that included wearing (a bit of) leather too. Punk and '80s electro-pop and goth, for example surely would've been less charming/effective if there was no (a bit of) leather.

  • I remember when I first heard this it gave me goosebumps, bloody love the Cabs, I still play them when I DJ

  • wish more would i remember these with joy division and acertian ratio Durutti columm the best gigs ever post punk.

  • one of the finest bands ever.

  • This song could not be more topical today! Crackdown, indeed. Especially cops cracking down on heads at the DNC and RNC in the U.S. Can't get enough of this vid/song. Totally dark totalitarian art!!!

  • 1982...

They started it and finished it before anyone else...

  • these beats are as fat as they come . you can feel the snare in your chest ! goddamn !

  • The greatest video ever! Note the fast cuts, the nightmare images, and that helicopter kept me up for nights when I first saw this 25 years ago! It is also easy to say that bands like Skinny Puppy and NIN can easily trace their roots to this video and lp...

  • Featured on:

    "The Crackdown" album (1983)

    and

"The Original Sound Of Sheffield '83/'87 - The Best Of The Virgin/EMI Years" compilation (2001)

  • PET SHOP BOYS?!

  • nope.

  • so hot, i love the guys dancing in the middle

  • Video directors trivia:

This video is made by Peter Care.

  • Actuel dada trip...

  • Better than sex, really

  • DADA in 80'perfect...

  • I love this song and video and I think Mallinder is sooooo sexy in this and his sexy voice just seduces me..........

  • one of the godfathers of industrial

  • industrial is shit, though.they are not.

  • man. you took the words right out of my mouth

  • Your retarded by saying that. go die pop tarded shit, they invented industrial along whith TG and THEY ALL ROCK, INDUSTIRAL IS AWEOSME AND YOUR A FUCKING RETARD FOR NOT LIKING IT POP BITCH.

  • i think you really like this band.i also understand you are an industrial type of geezer.

  • Enough praises can not define just how great CV is and how great this video is - eMpTV owes just about everything to this one video - look at all those quick cuts seamlessly paste together... Then there's the music - well without this band - others such as NIN (an awful band) does not exist... Too bad there are ever so few bands to be as daring as this...

  • This clip presents dark time 1981-1982 in Poland. CV dedicate LP 2x45 protagonists of the "Polish revolution"

  • Actually, "The Pressure Company: Live In Sheffield 19 Jan 82 - Benefit For Solidarity" (1982) live LP that features Sheffield University gig where they performed most of the songs from then yet upcoming "2x45" LP/12'' was THE album they dedicated to the Polish Solidarity Movement of the time. All its royalties went to it as well. ;-)

  • One of their best

  • saw them at hammersmith palais - around 1984-86 - great

  • Video added to playlist.

  • piece of history!

  • remember this is from over 20 years ago! stands the test of time! - astonishing!

  • I remember being into this at the time. Just glad I found it again. Sadly we're living in times where acts like this simply don't exist.

  • great comment, plus at the time access to the web, internet, media just didn't exist as it does now for bands/us or was just too expensive, this was all ground breaking stuff plus fabulous track(s)

  •
Sadly we're living in times where acts like this simply don't exist.
Blame greedy recording industry and stupid journalists falling for the acts like Britney Spears et al for that the most!

This The The song line explains them perfectly: "The world is on its elbows and knees/It's forgotten the message/And worships the creeds" ~ Armageddon Days (Are Here Again) (1989). ;-)

  • I remember this from 25 years ago!!! I was blown away then, and am still blown away today... What true revolutionaries CV are... What a great song, video and lp inventing the genre of industrial along with Throbbing Gristle

  • absolutely! and so original and since much copied!

  • I'd have to say that this is the greatest video that I've ever seen to this date and I've probably seen 40,000 -- give or take a few thousand... Talk about influence with super fast and amazing editing with repeat nightmare visuals which sooooo many truly awful bands such as one of the bottom 5 bands of all time NIN owe a great debt to... duh

  • Still holds up after all these years I think. Mallinder is cool as hell....

  • Mallinder is...hmmm! A way too hard question to answer...

  • Been looking everywhere for this video!

    Thank you

  • THANKS FOR POSTING, GOOD QUALITY

  • Brilliant music !!

  • Actually is the "original" ( it's me ...Out )...no the Black and white "dance: Is from SENSORIA...

  • Not "The" Original ( mix with other ) But MORE ...Thats a BAND !!!

  • More..
