They really need to re-release this video! Kirk has re-mastered both the Johnny Yes No mini-film & soundtrack and has also come out with new versions of both that became available as a sweet 4-disc package this past fall. He says that he wants to re-release the stuff they did for Virgin back in the mid-80s sometime this year. Hopefully he might consider 'Gasoline'?
I've been a fan of the Cabs for over 30 years now, and have always wondered why they never broke in to the 'mainstream'. They had the sounds, and, as this video shows, had the looks. Too good for the masses. Possibly.
Politics aside, this is a great song from a time when electronic music made leaps and bounds over the mainstream crap of the day. This dark electronic sound complete with haunting video was the hallmark of CV.

MIDI does not have a unique sound. Its merely a technology for storing and exchanging musical notes. And basically, it hasn't changed much at all since its release.
@gombie . 80's midi was not "primitive", certainly a different style, but then again style is inpsired by technologies, and surroundings. As per price, in 1983 all synthesisers were expensive, be it midi or CV Gate. The tracks sound a lot like early digital machines (and I do not think they were CV controlled) and many recorded tapes synced to tempo and beat box.
@gombie not sure if anyone else has pointed out but this track is not 1985, it was definitely released in 1983, a double Aside 12" Just Fascination / The Crackdown. The video Gasoline In Your Eye containing the video for this track was released in 1985.
I am reasonably certain that Skinny Puppy were way to messed up on drugs at this point in their carreer to be able to borrow anything from anyone, let alone Cab Voltaire ;) But yes, now that you mention it... this DOES remind me of Testure
Does anyonek now if Thropbbing Gristle made a remix(es) of this song?
This song is the most inpired rack for Skinny Puppy, esspecially for the "Testure" track, you cna hear the resembles. Probably hrer where Industrial mixed whith elements of aPop was Carbaret Voltaire. Voltaire edoes allso good whith the use of those Industrial "signal" sonic wave sounds which get used alot in Industrial related music...
My uncle was there in ZOMO unit beatting people to dead,10 years later i was siting in BRDM for 3 days on the street waiting to get order to kill people. How diffrent are we??? 22 years later who we gonna kill this time?. One thing i certain music always survive no matter what we do and what we say. no matter who the puppet is... the average person must choose what they're going to do. listen to yourself and figure out what you care about. you'll know what to do. but remember, no matter what you choose, someone will hate you for it.
That's one of the best comments concerning life in general I've ever read on this channel. And it pretty sums up what Cabaret Voltaire were about. You can't please everyone all the time, can you? All you can do is please yourself, can't you? If you can't please yourself, you can't please your soul. Simple as that! Not everyone comes from the same background or thinks the same.

The stuff on the radio doesn't INSPIRE me to get philosophical OR join a cause (I volunteer in my community), surely music can have a deep impact on the mind.... as deep as the philosophical "satyr" Screwtape Letters written by C.S. Lewis I was just reading over my morning coffee. Many cultures (if not most) recognize the depth of the impact music has on our energy, minds, and spirits. Bet there's a composer or artist out there (or philosophical POINT OF VIEW) that you endorse, too, simply put..
For the same reason I'll always say the Cabs (and Matt Johnson of The The as well) are the best teachers I've ever had. They taught me things no one ever is going to teach me - how to accept things in everyday life, real sense of freedom, real history of human kind, the way of thinking...etc etc.
everyone, please stop waxing philosophical over entertainers... it's just music. just enjoy it. if you don't enjoy it, then don't listen to it. there is no point in treating it like it's a cause or something. i like this music, but it's not a lifestyle. it's no more significant than any music you hear on the radio. if you want to get "deep", then study real philosophy or join a cause. otherwise, just enjoy the music.
yuor right, too bad u got down rated beucase theres retarded oldskoolers who dont know that Carbarat Voltaire are awesome course they invented industrial music.

Here it is folks - the greatest music video ever made! Watch those nightmare images combined with truly great editing and music that was and still is far ahead of its time. This puts to shame trash like NIN. Enough said.
Cabaret Voltaire and their overall impact on everyday life and culture in general should be introduced as a sole subject in schools/universities immediately.
They deserved the monument of culture whatever it was (a statue, a hall, ...etc) as well. I think it would be the biggest recognition for them of them all. Bloody recording industry's pointless awards are totally irrelevant in their case.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
greatest?! look i like syth pop but i think people such as yourself who arnt evenmusicians btw take this stuff way too seriously-Cabaret Voltaire was good but they are so gay..NIN's closer was a masterpiece..hardly trash domt tell anyone from Cleveland NIN was trash
not to their face i would not recommmend it especially since your from a nation with no universal health coverage.
oh i remember this well. ignited my love affair that lasted decades. still stands the test of time. one of the best shows I've seen was them at the Ritz in NYC in the late 80's. Perfect in every sense.
This is easily the greatest video ever!!! Great music as well as lame boring bands such as NIN would be nowhere without CV... Look at those quick cuts editing with nightmare images - simple isn't it?
Taking that in galetski's words this video is a totally dark totalitarian art, and that leather wear makes people look stronger and more serious I think the leather trousers are just okay with me here. Even Richard H. Kirk released a bloody superb single entitled "Leather Hands" together with the Box's Peter Hope in 1985. Cabs loved the leather in those days.
I do know what you meant by that! Leather trousers were hip in the late '50s when rock'n'roll first started (which was OK) whereas in the '80s they seemed (a bit) funny, didn't they? But I still like to think that leather wear looks powerful and very serious at some particular occasions anyway. That's only my opinion (again)...
Elvis comeback-68,in which he had his best costume, leather,in black-looking very cool and people loved it,but he could were anything;singing+moves makes crowd go crazy;not just women...
Yes, Elvis looked fabulous dressed like that at the time indeed, didn't he? That legendary performance where he was surrounded by the audience while he was sitting on the chair, and singing and playing guitar dressed in the leather is one of the most effective performances I've ever seen.
What I was trying to say was that there's one certain general opinion which says that after the late '50s rock'n'roll boom you didn't have to wear the leather to prove your seriousness anymore at all. (...)
(...) All you had to do was to prove your seriousness in your head standing by your every lyric. I don't agree with that at all. Cabaret Voltaire were dressed in their videos right the way they really should even if that included wearing (a bit of) leather too. Punk and '80s electro-pop and goth, for example surely would've been less charming/effective if there was no (a bit of) leather.
This song could not be more topical today! Crackdown, indeed. Especially cops cracking down on heads at the DNC and RNC in the U.S. Can't get enough of this vid/song. Totally dark totalitarian art!!!
The greatest video ever! Note the fast cuts, the nightmare images, and that helicopter kept me up for nights when I first saw this 25 years ago! It is also easy to say that bands like Skinny Puppy and NIN can easily trace their roots to this video and lp...
Your retarded by saying that. go die pop tarded shit, they invented industrial along whith TG and THEY ALL ROCK, INDUSTIRAL IS AWEOSME AND YOUR A FUCKING RETARD FOR NOT LIKING IT POP BITCH.
Enough praises can not define just how great CV is and how great this video is - eMpTV owes just about everything to this one video - look at all those quick cuts seamlessly paste together... Then there's the music - well without this band - others such as NIN (an awful band) does not exist... Too bad there are ever so few bands to be as daring as this...
Actually, "The Pressure Company: Live In Sheffield 19 Jan 82 - Benefit For Solidarity" (1982) live LP that features Sheffield University gig where they performed most of the songs from then yet upcoming "2x45" LP/12'' was THE album they dedicated to the Polish Solidarity Movement of the time. All its royalties went to it as well. ;-)
great comment, plus at the time access to the web, internet, media just didn't exist as it does now for bands/us or was just too expensive, this was all ground breaking stuff plus fabulous track(s)
Sadly we're living in times where acts like this simply don't exist.
[/QUOTE]
Blame greedy recording industry and stupid journalists falling for the acts like Britney Spears et al for that the most!
This The The song line explains them perfectly: "The world is on its elbows and knees/It's forgotten the message/And worships the creeds" ~ Armageddon Days (Are Here Again) (1989). ;-)
I remember this from 25 years ago!!! I was blown away then, and am still blown away today... What true revolutionaries CV are... What a great song, video and lp inventing the genre of industrial along with Throbbing Gristle
I'd have to say that this is the greatest video that I've ever seen to this date and I've probably seen 40,000 -- give or take a few thousand... Talk about influence with super fast and amazing editing with repeat nightmare visuals which sooooo many truly awful bands such as one of the bottom 5 bands of all time NIN owe a great debt to... duh
They really need to re-release this video! Kirk has re-mastered both the Johnny Yes No mini-film & soundtrack and has also come out with new versions of both that became available as a sweet 4-disc package this past fall. @zzGRENDELzz Many SP borrow elements from tracks from CV.
SP first LP is technically a CV's LP if it wasn't for Nivek's voice.
I even noted that VX gas sampled elements from another CV theme, I think it was from the covenant album.

greatest?! look i like syth pop but i think people such as yourself who arnt evenmusicians btw take this stuff way too seriously-Cabaret Voltaire was good but they are so gay..NIN's closer was a masterpiece..hardly trash domt tell anyone from Cleveland NIN was trash
not to their face i would not recommmend it especially since your from a nation with no universal health coverage.

Great to see/hear this after so long. I had the tape at the time, sadly it's long lost.

oh i remember this well. ignited my love affair that lasted decades. still stands the test of time. one of the best shows I've seen was them at the Ritz in NYC in the late 80's. Perfect in every sense.

i have this on original bleedin VHS tape somewhere fffs! :p FLA and Front 242 (amongst many others) owes a LOT to these Sheffield blokes :D

This is easily the greatest video ever!!! Great music as well as lame boring bands such as NIN would be nowhere without CV... Look at those quick cuts editing with nightmare images - simple isn't it?

Cab Volt was a fine fucking band!!!!

Could have done without the leather trousers tbh.
mookie2637 3 years ago
Taking that in galetski's words this video is a totally dark totalitarian art, and that leather wear makes people look stronger and more serious I think the leather trousers are just okay with me here. Even Richard H. Kirk released a bloody superb single entitled "Leather Hands" together with the Box's Peter Hope in 1985. Cabs loved the leather in those days.
TheMercyBeat 3 years ago 4
If you think leather trousers make people look more serious I'll have to differ. Even in 1982....
mookie2637 2 years ago
I do know what you meant by that! Leather trousers were hip in the late '50s when rock'n'roll first started (which was OK) whereas in the '80s they seemed (a bit) funny, didn't they? But I still like to think that leather wear looks powerful and very serious at some particular occasions anyway. That's only my opinion (again)...

Elvis comeback-68,in which he had his best costume, leather,in black-looking very cool and people loved it,but he could were anything;singing+moves makes crowd go crazy;not just women...
timris 2 years ago
Yes, Elvis looked fabulous dressed like that at the time indeed, didn't he? That legendary performance where he was surrounded by the audience while he was sitting on the chair, and singing and playing guitar dressed in the leather is one of the most effective performances I've ever seen.
What I was trying to say was that there's one certain general opinion which says that after the late '50s rock'n'roll boom you didn't have to wear the leather to prove your seriousness anymore at all. (...)
TheMercyBeat 2 years ago

This clip presents dark time 1981-1982 in Poland. CV dedicate LP 2x45 protagonists of the "Polish revolution"
ncaso 3 years ago
Actually, "The Pressure Company: Live In Sheffield 19 Jan 82 - Benefit For Solidarity" (1982) live LP that features Sheffield University gig where they performed most of the songs from then yet upcoming "2x45" LP/12'' was THE album they dedicated to the Polish Solidarity Movement of the time. All its royalties went to it as well. ;-)

great comment, plus at the time access to the web, internet, media just didn't exist as it does now for bands/us or was just too expensive, this was all ground breaking stuff plus fabulous track(s)

Talk about influence with super fast and amazing editing with repeat nightmare visuals which sooooo many truly awful bands such as one of the bottom 5 bands of all time NIN owe a great debt to... duh

Still holds up after all these years I think. Mallinder is cool as hell....
