you may want to adjust the running speed down some. It sounds like it is running too fast. If it is it will wear your engine out much faster. If the throttle cable cannot be adjusted down enough, there is a little tab that you hooked the spring to that can be bent back slightly toward the rear of the mower that will slow it down. Just my 2 cents but it does sound too fast and that could also be dangerous for you if something flew apart. thanks for posting the video, I enjoyed it :)
@me373 thanks for brother you just answered the question that came on these videos seeking, just did some repair on my mower. now the dam thing is running wide open just a little too much though
@me373 These engines will never wear out! As long as the piston is still attached to the crankshaft, it's virtually impossible to destroy a B&S "Classic" or "Sprint".
@meccaturbo well I'm no mechanic for sure but everything I have ever read or seen about small engines says that vibration is a sure way to wear one out quicker. bent cranks, even with the piston still attached, is supossed to be murder on any engine.
My Briggs & Stratton mower was surging and the trottle had no effect at all. I could see that the governor spring was missing. So what I did I changed the carb diaphgram, linkage, governor and idle spring, the spark plug and some sealings. Your video help me a lot! Now my mower runs nice and well, but the throttle still has no effect. Low or high throttle, it always runs about the same, what could be the problem? The throttle plate is turning when I turn move the lever.
@trsqr is the throttle plate moving in it's full travel? in other words, completely opening and closing? your throttle cable may be out of adjustment or even stretched from use far enough to affect it and cause your problem.
I am sending you an E- high five. I have the same mower (minus the self propelled feature) which has not run in 2 years. After watching your video, and instructions, it litterally started on the first pull.
Although I have the linkage, and 2 springs kind of hooked up from memory I don't think they are exact could you possibly take a pic or draw a crude diagram with mspaint? Thanks again. P
Cool. Thanks. I just pulled the mower out of the shed yesterday and I am going to make an update to this video showing closer detail of the linkage and springs and how they are connected and where. Give me a couple of days and it should be up. Thanks for watching.
I posted a follow up video to my "Linkage & Spring replacement on a Briggs & Stratton Quattro 4 HP Murray Lawn Mower " video a couple days ago with more detail. Check it out it might help.
I have a Quattro 40 B&S lawnmower engine. You could save yourself a lot of unnecessary disassembly by simply undoing the long screw holding the filter down and then sliding it out carefully over the carburettor to expose the governor springs.underneath.
How can I be sure that I have connected the springs to the correct "holes"? There appear to be 3 potential spots to connect one end of the springs to. I am assuming that both springs connect to the linkage.
I can't tell without looking at the mower and it's in the shed stored away for the winter. I'll be pulling it out in a couple of weeks and I'll make an update video with some close ups showing more detail. I should have done that in the first video to begin with. If you can wait, please check back in a couple of weeks to see if I got to it yet. Thanks for watching.
sounds a bit over 3000 rpm I'd have put a new diaphragm on it rather than played with the gov springs. if they were on there, then chances are they were working. it should start on the first pull....air filters are cheap as well. I've rebuilt 100's of Quattros and unless the springs were missing ( the smaller one is not on all models) or broken they weren't the problem. good work tho pulling all the covers off. a vid would be hard to see if you'd left them on. thanks
Thanks. Someone had messed with it because the springs were all stretched out and reattached and it would no longer run properly. If I have any issues next season I'll look into the diaphram and also the air filter. Thanks for the comment.
A fag is an english slang word for a cigarette (I'm in England). I guess you are in the USA where fag is a slang word for a Puff?? I remember finding it hilarious when I visited the States and someone mentioned they liked my Fanny bag. In England Fanny is a slang word for a "Lady's front bottom" !!
Hey i bought the same murray lawnmower at a garage sale, and id wouldn't start so i changed the gasket and noticed the springs. i also noticed in the vid urs has a throttle. mine says throttle free design yet too start the engine i had to manipulate the springs with my fingers while my dad started the engine. finally when i started it., and it was idling the engine was giving off a tone of white smoke. thanks and nice vid.
I could not find a video about springs for a Briggs. I bought a used old mower that the springs where missing. N primer had a hole in it. Found lots about replacing liners but no springs. Thanks. Only thing I couldn't realy see where u put the springs but I kinda got it..
That was great - just what I needed. My Briggs and Stratton that I bought second hand on ebay was a bit shagged when I got it. After 2 years of mowing my back jungle and no servicing it finally told me to f ck off and stopped completely. I changed the air filter, spark plug and oil and although it now runs it sounds like its been smoking 60 fags a day. I have noticed that the springs and linkages don't seem to do anything and just hang loosely. Now I know what to do with them. Thanks Paistboy!
You're welcome. I made this video because I couldn't find this on Youtube and figured it might help someone else out to make a video of me fixing mine. Glad I could help.

I have a 14.5 B&S riding mower, it runs great at low and full throttle, but mid range causes it backfire and run ruff.

In most cases, lawn mower engines should be adjusted to run at 3200 RPM or slower.
