obama couldn't get Jeremiah Wright, so he found the next best thing. Funny thing is, without the white vote, Obama wouldn't have been elected. More blacks voted for Obama than McCain. McCain had hardly any black supporters. Why is that? Talk about judging a man by the color of his skin.
@msmithstud There was a 2% increase in black voters in 2008 from 2004, and there was a 5% increase in blacks who voted Democrat in 2008 from 2004. You're telling me the 90% of blacks who ALWAYS vote Democrat only did it in 2008 because there was a black candidate?

If that what Obama epitomizes we are in a rude awakening. He's your typical race hustler who loves to blame everything on the white man. What an ignoramous!!!
He was simply remembering the past and hoping for a new beginning. We have to accept that we are not in a "post-racial" society, that people still have deep racial hatred towards certain groups of people and that racism is part of this "great" country!
Rev. Dr, Joseph Lowery was referencing the African American blues singer Big Bill Broonzy and his song "Get Back" which talked about the hardships of being black in America. The song talked about the hardships of people of color and the privilege the white [heterosexual] male has had in our society.
You should becareful what you wish for. Before you say something like that, you should wonder where he was coming from. That prayer ment alot to me, and several others that thought this day would never come. May God bless you and keep you.....Whoever you are. Because thats not even right
Well if you look back @ history, the majority of the actions the caucasians have participated in have been barbaric. I'm talking about Africa, Asia(Mainly India), South America, Australia and even the USA of today, North America.
For the reasons that the caucasian race has wanted to own or control everything, the picture a lot of non-white people have of white people is not a good one. All Joseph wanted to emphasize is the whites should be recognized and embrace good, learning from their past!
mikiy84: The actions you speak of were the actions of SOME caucasians. But you have essentially said that all caucasians perpetrated these evils, including those who were always against such things (abolitionists, Quakers, and others), also those from countries that never participated in colonization or slavery, and those who were subjects of imperial regimes and were themselves oppressed. Your statements are broad generalizations that are incorrect, and are by definition racist.
Rev. Lowrey was right on target and we thank him for illuminating the Inauguration. Some folks are too tied up in negative, silly, destructive mess to see this man's wisdom and be inspired by his words.
Simply ridiculous! Too many self oppressed blacks, I hear them everywhere I go. I'm quite sick of it all. Tolerance is the ideal but that IS NOT THE CENTRAL THEME when you listen to what he is really saying...go ahead, stick a finger down your thoat! THE PRESIDENT IS ONLY 1/2 BLACK ANYWAY!!!! So what's all this foolishness about him being a black president? He is not even BLACK!
5:20 is by far one of the most racist things I've ever heard. I'm sick of this crap of the bitterness of the past. If you want to move forward, then...move forward! I didn't enslave your ancestors (your own people sold them into slavery) and you were not a slave! I am in no way responsible for your ancestors (not you) being a slave no more than are you responsible for all the Jews that were slaves a LOT longer than your people were! Change is good, but we ALL have to do it! Not ONLY the whites.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? This benediction was the icing on the cake of the entire event. I did not hear Dr. Lowrey say that WHITES were the only ones that needed to do something...
There is people some people who didnt like his speech. These are the people who are holding the world back. They need to see that this is 1 step closer to peace on earth. I think you should hop on board with everyone, we may not see the day when there is peace on earth but your grandchildren will know that you had a part in giving it to them.... Join us and become a better person. It feels good
That was a lovely moment, and i feel like even though our lives are not perfect, and poverty still affects billions of people today, we have turned around from the barbaric, racist and immoral world we once occupied. I hope this prayer touches everysole that listens to it, and if we unite and hold on to the faith that has got us to where we are today,I envision a world where there will be prosperity in Africa, peace in the middle east and wholeness that our kids/grandkids will cherish 1day, Amen
i was considering reverend crayola and how everyone says his comments at the inauguration were just a joke, well I decided to make a few jokes of my own
oh thats a nice comment coming from some one that didnt read the bible, christians in the olden days rewrote the bible so i wouldnt be talking!!!!!!!!!
4 YOUR INFORMATION KENYA is in AFRICA HIS PEOPLE DID NOT MISS THE BOAT NEITHER DID HIS WIFE 'S PEOPLE CHECKTHE MAP !!!!!!!!
HE IS EVERYONES PRESIDENT GOD BLESS AMERICA! THIS IS WHAT THE REAL CONSTITUTION IS ALL ABOUT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL!! IT'S BEEN ALONG TIME COMMING BUT THE DAY AND CHANGE HAS COME!!!!! I AM GLAD TO SAY " I AM AN AMERICAN TO YOU THE GREAT BLACK HISTORIAN TOGDHEERboy
There some people who cant grow up. Change has come, 1 step closer to peace on earth. I think everyone should hop on board and come together as 1 and contribute to the making of peace on earth eventough we might not be here to see it , but your grandchildren will know that you had a part in bringing peace for there future.......
As a brown lebanese person i found his speech amazing !!! haha this is the cutest old man ever =) hope obama will be the change we want to see ... Long live GMA =D
Why did they let this old idiot get up there and speak? Its not a prayer at all, its a speech- white embrace whats right? Wake up America white people are not the only ones that are racist.
As a white European, I celebrated the inauguration as a moment when the United States began the process of re-joining the community of Nations. We've missed you and right now we all need one another! I am so sad to read some of the comments. Did people miss where Rev Lowery prayed that, in the difficult days ahead, the people of the United States would "turn to each other and not on each other"?
So many people know nothing of history and "artistmusi.." seems to be one of them.. Truth is that life for Jews within the House of Islam has been characterized by ceaseless humiliation and regular pogroms. A state of apartheid has been the norm, in which Jews have been forbidden to bear arms, to give evidence in court, and to ride horses. They have been forced to wear distinctive clothing (the yellow badge originated in Baghdad, not in Nazi Germany) and to avoid certain streets and buildings.
That benediction was so perfect I don't even know where to begin. The invocation of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the nod to the dire state of the world, the rebuke of America's poverty and elitism, the modernized reference to swords into ploughshares, the cheeky ending delivered with a glint in his eye, millions of people shouting amen. It was so quintessentially American. There was nothing there for anyone to fear or resent; it was a call to joy on a joyous day.
did you see obama's smile go away when he said "when white will imbrace what is right" oh and for the record obama's mother and grandmother were white so obama cant be a racist...
This is an excerpt from the traditional negro national anthem, that this civil rights era cleric chose in his prayer. Although it is not commonly referenced today, during the civil right upheveils of 1950's and 60's it was a common point of reference. I think many people white, black, or whatever people have misinterpreted his use of. Clearly, he was just trying to acknowledge a credible civil rights era message, that asks all people to do something to make this world better.
What negro national anthem are you refering to? If its the one I'm thinking of, he changed the words to mean something different from the original song. The chorus goes like this:
They says if you was white, should be all right
If you was brown, stick around
But as you's black, m-mm brother, git back git back git back
Is this what you are refering to? Or is there another song? Or maybe there are different versions?
that wasn't disrespectful, that was an historical-based comment that came from a time when race mattered most and although we still have alot to achieve where the issue of race is concerned, i don't believe that he was being disrespectful, i mean we're dealing with our first African american president...the issue of race is going to be involved regardless
89monimo, Let me remind you that Barack Hussien Obama is not an African American. His father is from Kenya and his mother a Kansas white women. He represents the mixed generation of America if anything. The only thing black about obama is Mitchell Obama because she has ancestrial ties to slavery.
yes lets stop the meaningless debates and be all warm and fuzzy inside... the pastor is trying to keep white folk in a state of guilt trip with that statement "when white will embrace what is right".. however the pastor is right in looking to the future "when white will embrace what is right"... we were not right in voting for a black baby killing antichrist b.o.. I need a shit, hope it's not diarhea!
We're called upon now, by "the better angels of our natures" to stop hating. And yet, just as people with dirty minds see smut everywhere, apparently some with hatred and paranoia in THEIR hearts, see racism in Lowery's beautiful, beautiful benediction. All he did was quote old hymns, including a verse from "God Bless America." And he quoted an old rhyme from folklore. Lighten up. Love is what we need now. Brotherhood.
The chant that he used in the days of the Civil Rights movement, marching alongside MLK, Jr., when all of those phrases meant something (and just FYI...the red/yellow/brown references ALL refer to African-Americans as the different "shades" of black skin were regarded back then). He was using both of those pieces of history at the outset of his prayer as a way of acknowledging just how far this day means we have come.
From a Muslim who can counts many Christians and Hindus amongst my group of close friends, I'm sure a person of any religion can strongly say Amen! to that benediction.
me2579 is practicing muslim deception saying he has Christian frineds. it says in their koran not to make friends with Jews or Christians.......GOTCHA GOOFBALL
Have you EVER read the Qu'ran? it talks about Christians and Jews as "people of the book" and tells muslims not to argue with their brothers and sisters but to let God decide who is right or wrong...ignorance is not bliss...read and study instead of commenting out of ignorance...peace be unto you...the same words in the bible put in the mouth of YESHUA when he entered into the final supper...read and study to show theyself approved...to discern fact from fiction...
...They have been obliged, under penalty of violence and even death, to pass Muslims only on their left (impure) side while keeping their eyes lowered . In other parts of the Arab world it has been local custom for Muslim children to throw stones at Jews and spit upon them.
excuse me im from jordan, and im proud to say that if i see a jew i would spit on him. what isreal did to ghaza is unacceptable for the whole world, using banned weapons and killing hundreds of woman and children and yet they say they are protecting themselfs from terror, whos the real terrorist??!
When you find the statistics that say all WHITE Americans voted for Obama, you let me know. And electing a black president does not erase all the rampant, hidden, and institutionalized racism that still exists. We have come a long way yes, but there's still work to do. You want some personal stories about racism, I'll give them to you.
When I heard "when white will embrace what is right", I almost exploded. He inferred that I, as a white person, have not and probably can't embrace what is right, well that does it for me. If I would have given that benediction and made some inferrance that had negative conotations about black people, you and I would never have heard the end of how racial prejudiced I was. And Barack Obama just sat there and laughed about it, how nice! How professional! How stupid!
Rev Lowery's prayer is right on the mark. Why not take a step back, relax and think about what he said? I'm not afraid of he asking God for help and guidance and of being willing to do my part. Thank you Rev Lowery for your insightful thoughts.
We accept ill behaviors and words as truth based on our own personal feelings and beliefs, how we choose to segregate ourselves to one form of religion, to one class or race of people and from humanity as a whole; as if we are superior or rightfully driven with defensive tactics to achieve superiority, as if we are deemed to cast judgment on others ourselves (key word). Based on Gods Word this is not what God has intended for us to do.
This man is a racist and it was obvious that Obama thought it was funny because he was smiling and chuckling while he was saying it. This tells us a lot about our new president. Did we make a mistake???
Please, STFU!!! Obama is for america, not a race. You are ignorant for even briinging that up. Get over it. McCain lost and bush is gone. Obama is president for at least the next 4 years and nothing you can do about it. You just upset cause finally someone is for all americans and not just the ones with bright skin.
in the last part of the prayer, he said "in the memory of our saints" the saints hes referring are the people of all race that have died long before you all were born and they dreamed of this day. so what the reverend did is recite some of things people of all color hoped for back in the days when things were really really bad. stay positive people listen to the whole thing. don't take the latter part of this prayer to be racist. open your ears to the whole thing. peace and love to all..
The ending comments made by the man speaking was to a specific group of people and for a specific group of people that continues to causes division, not unity. But you find this a lot in religious circles that is why it is important for each of us to have a personal relationship with God so we can discern what is right and what is wrong, when a prayer is anointed or not.

What a pretentious fool. Here he is using an Inaguration to insult White people who MADE IT ALL POSSIBLE. Obama is there because of White mercy, not Black ability, and everybody knows it except the PC braindead Whites who hit the pipe of guilt-tripping like a Crack Addict!
He insults Whites while using a bogus 16th Century English he picked up from the King James version of the Bible.
Beautiful!!! I am not even religious but this touched me. Joseph Lowery was one of foremost leaders of the civil rights movement in this country's not so distant past. He has seen so much ugliness in human nature but still believes in the potential of humanity and of this country. It's amazing that at the age of 89 he can participate in the realization of this country's progress.
what a crazy old racist. he deliberatly pointed out faults and made all white people conform to a status quoe, hey reverend DON"T FORGET YOUR ALZHIEMERS MEDS ANYMORE
Actually Verich, Arabs still have slaves, just no longer openly. Most are sex slaves, but also domestic slaves. We have a few cases in the past several years of Arabs bringing child slaves with them into the U.S. Who knows how many there actaully are here, let alone in the Muslim world?
how about this you racist bafoon: ALL should embrace whats right and ALL should avoid racism no matter what "color" you call yourself and when you pray try and be reverent.
Let's keep playing the race card. Even though millions of white people voted for Obama, I suppose we are still supposed to feel guilty about slavery or just being white.
We can sit and justify, praise, damn and argue about this all day; the truth is what the truth is and until we have discernment of the spirit and we are all able to check ourselves with honest practice we couldnt see the truth even if it is standing right in front of us. May God have mercy on mankind as we live and learn the truth of our existence.
We accept ill behaviors and words as truth based on our own personal feelings and beliefs, how we choose to segregate ourselves to one form of religion, to one class or race of people and from humanity as a whole; as if we are superior or rightfully driven with defensive tactics to achieve superiority as if we are deemed to cast judgment on others ourselves. Sondarah I agree with you. The ending comments made by the man speaking was to a specific group of people and for a specific group of people that continues to causes division, not unity. But you find this a lot in religious circles that is why it is important for each of us to have a personal relationship with God so we can discern what is right and what is wrong, when a prayer is anointed or not.
"when tanks will be pound into tractors" is a nice thought but it ain't never, never, never gonna happen. since mankind has been on this earth there's always been conflict on some level. the only way to prevent war is to prepare for war.
I feel sorry for this man. Maybe he's just too old to realize what many strived for has arrived. Rejoice! Dance! Let joy be the response. I fear he's missed it. I hope to see that day when bigots are the fringe. But right now it's just going back in forth over which color can be racist and get away with it.
" ...in the joy of a new beginning, HELP US WORK FOR THAT DAY...when white will embrace what is right." He obviosly believes that day is still not here. sad. He blatantly infers that whites do not embrace right, but that we need Gods help to work toward that day.
How dare he judge my character with such a broad brush. He doesn't recognize the achievements of the civil rights movement? What will it take?
This is the benediction for the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States of America. The preacher chosen by the new president looks forward to the day "when white will embrace what is right" because, as things stand now, white people - specifically white people - do not embrace what is right.
If we didn't and hadn't no one but White people - in your view would be living in the U.S. Instead, we have given it away to carpers like you. More of us are beginning to see what a mistake that has been and this so-called preacher helps make that plain.
I'm really glad Mr. Obama is the president. Thanks God. But I admit that apparently Rev. Lowery is still carrying grudges against white and yellow people. Yes he's absolutely a racist.
thank you so much for posting this beautiful hymn of praise and prayer. Dr. Joseph Lowery is a man of integrity and dignity. how fortunate we are to have him still with us as we embrace our new president. finally a REAL president who can lead with honesty and wisdom!
No matter how you want to look at it this is a man of God that should be following the word of God that is directed by the Spirit; humbled before God, without insult or prejudices.
Any prayer to our Lord and Savior for the benefit of mankind that has connotations or a phrase intended for laughter of the congregation could be perceived as blasphemy or an abomination. (no punn intended).
His benediction, for me, reminds me of that Civil Rights legacy and what the faith-movement for justice is about. His last lines were a play on common sayings for us in people of color community, it usually goes "if you're black, stay back; if you're red, your dead, if you're yellow, you're mellow, if you're white, you're alright"
Thanks for posting. Obviously many people cannot contain yet that he´s talking about something bigger than the old ¨`we´ against ´the others´¨, We means everybody. As it should be.
Beautiful ending of the inauguration, a new start!
So, we palefaces elect a black man President and we are rewarded with a scolding from a religious geezer chiding us for past racism by mumbling a prayer based on words from a Big Bill Broonzy song. It will be a funny 4 to 8 years.
For those of you who rudely commented on this video without thinking, he wasn't being racist. He was preaching about equality for all regardless of their ethnicity. If you open up your mind, ears, and hearts you would know that. But then again, judging by some of these asinine comments, some aren't able to do so.
It is amazing to me an adult can say such things and these idiots in the crowd say amen. He is nothing but a racist and needs to get blasted for those comments.
I pray for all of you who can't take a joke!! Most of u on here can't cause your upset... BARACK OBAMA IS THE PRESIDENT LOVE OR HATE IT U CAN'T CHANGE IT!!!
I'm white. It's not that I can't take a joke; I take prayer very seriously. I found Rev. Lowery's "prayer" to be more in line of a poem or speach, but I never include race in my prayers and I'm surprised to see that he did. I think it was inappropriate.
I really do not believe Rev Lowery's benediction was said to be offensive. This is one of many examples in which we all must think outside of those things we may have never had to go through and at least TRY to understand that everyone that has freedom paid a price..no one said how his prayer including 'coming together' and 'unity' He prayed in the way HE has experienced living in the USA during segregation/injustice/prejudice and other things that other cultures may never understand.
I bet our new president cringed when he heard the racist statements from the old fart, especially considering 70% of registered voters in the U.S.A. are white.
"A prayer of hate"???? Amazing! Even on a day of such HOPE and PROMISE there still are people out there that hear but DON'T LISTEN! This is a day of CHANGE! OPEN YOUR MIND! START LISTENING! Its and amazing speech!
i agree this prayer is telling the us the white community that we are wrong and i know that there were problems before our generation but we are not the racists hes making us out to be
I think people need to really check out the meaning of the word racist..and racism. They are being used very casually without thought... maybe by those who have not experienced racism.. Hence their ignorant offense at words that would only offend a racist
President Bush gets Booed, and all 43 previous (white) presidents get a nice slap in the face by this comment. Nice start to this whole Unity thing President Obama.
a prayer of hate. Nice job racist old prick. Shame on any white in the crowd. He just called you wrong...HAHAHA idiots...I told you to not vote for the big eared moron and his kligon wife...
"A prayer of hate"???? Amazing! Even on a day of such HOPE and PROMISE there still are people out there that hear but DON'T LISTEN! This is a day of CHANGE! OPEN YOUR MIND! START LISTENING! Its and amazing speech!
u need serious, ...u sound so angry, what a waste of energy, u'll only realise who stupid u sound- get with the program, stop being ignorant, anul, and racist- its old fashion , this is the new age- so dust urself off and get with the program -stupid
"lets all pray for that day that blacks will not be asked to get back" (the majority of our country voted in a black president) "when brown can stick around" (have you ever known an american citizen that's ever been asked to leave the country?) "when yellow will be mellow" (wow, racist much?) "when the red man can get ahead man" (I spent $7000 at an indian casino in 2 years-they're still ahead) "and when white will embrace what is right" (go *&^% yourself) stereotyping and racism - nice prayer
omg what a wonderful ending...NOT! What was he thinking? "Oh let's praise every race under the sun except say that White people are always wrong! That's a good idea!"
Why is it "OK" to group all whites into a category that needs reminding of needing to embrace "right"? Isn't that racist? Racism is a two way street people. This thinly veiled prayer is nothing more than racism to me. As a white person who has always respected others, I am offended that my race was characterized as needing a reminder that was only appropriate for a few.
This is another racist. We hear about unity from Obama and he brings this so called Christian to Washington. If he is a christian I am the next President of these UNTIED STATES!!!
Forget appealing to your Masses - Do what is Right
Hey - I am no poet but I find Obama invokes God for Political Gain and will sell-out the Lord for Power - I pray he has a change of heart - maybe like Saul - that last line in Lowery's Prayer was offensive - the rest was OK
I liked a good deal of the prayer but was offended by the last line ...
this white, embraces what is right
I have a beautiful wife - we are pro-life -
Pray to God - listen to His will
Protect the unborn - not that law to kill
OK God knows I am no poet - but I find Obama to be a Fraud when it comes to protecting the most innocent - hey abortion kills red, yellow, brown, white and red - I hope he has a change of heart - let's get rid of that Punished with a Baby Mentality....

Clearly, he was just trying to acknowledge a credible civil rights era message, that asks all people to do something to make this world better.
mikemarchbanklutrell 3 years ago
What negro national anthem are you refering to? If its the one I'm thinking of, he changed the words to mean something different from the original song. The chorus goes like this:
They says if you was white, should be all right
If you was brown, stick around
But as you's black, m-mm brother, git back git back git back
Is this what you are refering to? Or is there another song? Or maybe there are different versions?
jlslreyn 3 years ago
that wasn't disrespectful, that was an historical-based comment that came from a time when race mattered most and although we still have alot to achieve where the issue of race is concerned, i don't believe that he was being disrespectful, i mean we're dealing with our first African american president...the issue of race is going to be involved regardless

89monimo, Let me remind you that Barack Hussien Obama is not an African American. His father is from Kenya and his mother a Kansas white women. He represents the mixed generation of America if anything. The only thing black about obama is Mitchell Obama because she has ancestrial ties to slavery.

Brotherhood.
straightlife 3 years ago 2
The chant that he used in the days of the Civil Rights movement, marching alongside MLK, Jr., when all of those phrases meant something (and just FYI...the red/yellow/brown references ALL refer to African-Americans as the different "shades" of black skin were regarded back then). He was using both of those pieces of history at the outset of his prayer as a way of acknowledging just how far this day means we have come.

Remind blacks that there were 50,000 black slave owners. Along with Mexican, Chinese and American Indian slave owners.
In fact Arabs had black slaves up until the 1960's.
And remind them that African war lords sold them to the slave traders.
