About Siri: um no, wp7 has old school voice interaction where I have tall like a robot. It's not natural communication. I'm a msft developer and therefore want them to succeed. MD
What marketing are they talking about? All the Apple marketing was done by people, fans and media – they just made some creative ads. Microsoft just got a totally wrong mindset, and philosophy about technology.
You guys are giving Apple too much credit. Both companies purchased their voice recognition technologies. Apple's just happens to work better in phones. I've seen no complaints about voice recognition in Ford Sync or Xbox, which uses Tellme.
Microsoft's been working hard on their NUI, and while they still have work on voice, they've been good at gestures and touch (Apple's doesn't recognize pressure points) and others.
watch the body language @ 4:07 even before the guy on the left finishes his question. the microsoft has it up his ass *locked and loaded* with contempt for Apple. jealous that apple is getting praise for voice Siri and nobody talks about microsoft's voice feature.
I've used Windows phones Voice Assistant and also, various alternatives from Android, and nothing comes near to the functionality and flexibility of Siri. the rest of the services require you to memorize 'keywords' whereas Siri is different. You can just 'speak' to Siri like a normal person and it responds. The difference is like a Robot vs Human. Also, Siri learns and adapts to your voice overtime. This is what most companies don't get and falter (aka MS). It's not all marketing.
Im an iphone user like my phone but the guy kinda has a point this technology of speaking to a device has existed for many years just not on phones and because apple put its like a new incredible feature and again he has a point how siri is whats actually making people buy the phone its not that big of a difference, but ya thats my opinion.
Was doing well when talking about Kinnect, completely messed up when going on the defensive about Siri. Siri will make voice recognition actually useable and reliable enough to be more functional with a degree of utility, in the same way that Apple took touch screens and made it into a instinctual component of UI.
Delusional. You only have to listen to this guy and Steve Ballmer talk for a few minutes to understand exactly why Microsoft is in a potentially terminal decline.
You are bulshitting Grandpa. You never made anything better or faster than Apple... Oh, your graphic user interface showed faster than Apple's but you have stole it anyway.
@aristotledude no, its about voice commands. It responds to key words in your requests, and gives option appropriate to that. It can however, do this job very well and make it seem 'intelligent', when in reality, its just repeating what people programmed it to say. It doesn't 'learn', and its not intelligent.
@unknownandunnamed : The iPhone 3GS had voice control when it arrived on the market responding to keywords like "play playlist groove" or "call John Smith" or "Shuffle" and you had to use a specific syntax to get it to work at all. Siri "learns" by storing any corrections you make. It also can keep track of context between requests to infer of the context of your next query. Asking "what's the weather like" will return a different response depending what place the previous request was for.
These Gesture ideas are nothing new. he is just talking about doing with the Kinect, what GestureTek, the company that invented video gesture control with 3D depth cameras, did from 2000 forward: Glad to see it starting to come to pass though; we have been evangelizing the power of video gesture control since we invented it back in 1986.....its time has arrived.........
@postalshack is not that siri understand natural language, because even direct and specific commands are in a natural language (except when asked in a weird, dead or invented language), more properly would be to say that answer to question that pop-up in a normal converstation and respond accordinly plus with a sense of personality, if the old CEO cant understand the capacity of that then definitely should quit his job, but then where would he get his millions a year?
Grandpa here obviously hasn't used Siri. It isn't what it does, it's how. This is what makes Microsoft just so damn shitty. Look at it, in just a year Apple is worth 70% more than it. God, I could rant about this all day.
I've seen the speech thing on windows phones and it is by far not working as well as Siri. Personally I think MSFT has a problem with delivering (and engineering) new products, because microsoft research has been doing natural language processing since more than ten years or so.
@thewiitry sorry have you seen the Nokia Lumia 800? It has gotten phone of the year for its impressive design. Also alot of people liked the Samsung Focus Flasha and the HTC Radar designs as well. Atleast MS is giving consumers different designs Apple only released 3 iPhone designs
The fact is, Windows Phone does most of the stuff Siri does without the cutesy personality. You can get a map with directions by saying a full address, you can open a web page,e.g. "google.com," you can do a search by speaking a sentence, you can dial a name, a number, or open an app. With Siri, you have the benefit of a witty replies to commands like, "Siri, open the pod bay doors." Wow, incredible.
@titoray7 There is a write-up by Josh Topolsky on theverge.com where he threw a lot of goofy requests at Siri. Apparently, the Apple people have anticipated, or more likely analyzed some of the wackier requests, and have programmed some canned responses. It's amusing, but there isn't any substance to it. It is the kind of thing you do for a couple days and never do again.
@bchunter1968 Not correc (no substance)t. I use it everyday to set reminders, take notes, set alarms and use Wolfram Alpha when cooking. I can even use it to ask what movies are playing on Time Warner Cable at the moment.
@bchunter1968 Microsoft does some, but it's not even close.
Windows Phone only understands limited, direct commands. It doesn't understand natural language or context. On Siri, you can ask "Is it going to rain tomorrow?" and get an answer based on the local forecast. You can say "remind me to get groceries when I get home" and it will create a reminder, label it "get groceries," and set a GPS-based alert. Microsoft makes you talk like a robot; Apple lets you talk like a human.
@postalshack Microsoft solution works and doesn't need a data connection Tellme is a program with a set of commands you say this it looks for it there. Where Siri is a program which you talk to and it takes back to a centralized server to get your results.
Both are voice recognition Siri is better obv but Tellme does enough to get somebody buy using voice commands especially while driving.
@postalshack you can say "Weather in San Antonio, TX" and WP will show you a five day forecast on the screen. If it is going to rain, you will see the percentage chance for rain. It is the same thing, man.
@bchunter1968 No. That's like saying Sesame Street has as good a vocabulary as the Oxford English Dictionary.
The iPhone user isn't forced to say "weather in San Antonio." He can ask "what's it like in San Antonio?" or "will I need an umbrella today?" and get a context-specific answer. If he asks "how about Austin?" afterwards, it knows he meant the same question for a different city. Microsoft's system only has one real command and one answer; Apple's has many possibilities.
@postalshack The best part of Siri is the ability to create appointments and reminders with your voice. Admittedly, you cannot do that with Windows Phone. That feature is actually very useful, and Siri has the advantage there, assuming it works without a glitch. Otherwise, it's easier just to type it out.
@bchunter1968 It works without a glitch. I must say, why is someone so old in charge of such a huge wing of a tech company. I'm 44 years old and I think I'm too old and this guy is at least 10 years older than me. He seems too corporate and perhaps that's MS problem. They need to put younger folks in charge.
@titoray7 Nothin IMO. It's personal preference. It's not Win7 fault per say, it's the fact that it's made by MS which makes people loathe it for some reason. And I share the hate for such old fat balding corporates (also Steve Balmar) who know sh!t about how the technology works and how it's different to it's competitors. They showed the same cockyness when iPhone came out and look at how it practically kicked them out of the mobile race. Unless they shed the attitude, I see the same fate.
@Nathan5791 ok I respect your opinion but let me just say a couple of things. 1. MS changed the game with XBX 2. WP IMO will change the game with deep social integration and Metro UI. I don't think they are aging or balding their R&D team researches and put out products different from what is out in the market. Also Jobs talks shit about his competitors didn't he say Windows will become irrelvanet when Win7 is highly sucessful and still #1 in business and consumer. Sorry ran out of characters
This guy is an idiot, WP7 is trash. I'm an iPhone user and i love it Windows could NEVER compare to it. I would even own and use an Android before I touched a Windows phone.
You _could_ argue that Windows 7 is similar, but you'd be wrong. Siri isn't your Dad's voice control. Anyone who has used it for an hour already knows this. Siri is the future.
The guy is clueless. Doesn't matter what you HAD, what's important is what you HAVE. And WP7 doesn't have much (yet). Where are the amazing games? Where is the voice control?
Windows Mobile users used to bash Apple iPhone users for not having multitasking and copy-paste. And they just introduced that feature this year into their product.
This is the common decree of tech companies that think Apple's success is tied entirely to marketing and not at all to implementation. This is why they fail over and over again, they don't get it.
@mistermarcusgmail You just used the word "specs". You don't get it at all. Ever notice that Apple doesn't promote specs in its ads? Spec comparisons are for geeks. It's about what you can do with products. With a "wimpy" 3.6L 6 cylinder engine, a Porche 911 Turbo whips most larger engines, with more impressive specs. Others may have a higher megapixel camera, faster processor, or an SD slot, but they lack iTunes, iCloud, Air Play, the App Store and a non-fragmented experience for developers.
Would you buy a Ford F-150 that has a Prius engine in it for $60,000? Let me guess..."sure, because the Prius is efficient". Meaning you're willing to effectively get ripped off even though you are severely lacking in performance, thus your smarter bet would be just to get a Prius itself for $30,000 that is just as efficient.
That's the problem. Some of you are willing to be ripped off for subpar specs. They DO matter, for the price.
@mistermarcusgmail.. It's not about the Specs, it's about the User Experience. And if you want to talk specs, the 4S is currently the worlds fastest phone in Benchmark test. Faster than the Galaxy S2, it's nxt competitor.iOS never requires a powerhouse like the unoptimized Android or Win7.Even a 3GS runs better than most Android phones in the market.
You are looking from a diff stand point. Specs is never why users pay premium. It's about the experience and most companies don't get it and fail
@mistermarcusgmail Yes, specs matter for advertising, not product use and experience. Apple refused to promote the 4S as 4G despite competitors pitching their HSPA+ phones as 4G. So on paper, it's not a 4G, while "4G" phones (really just HSPA+) exhibit considerably more battery drain, have very sporadic coverage, and best still, have slower throughput. Competitors boasting 1GB of memory can't tune their OS to scream at 512MB like Apple has. Do you want to boast about specs or use the phone?
Yeah because Microsoft is such a failure of a company. Sure Apple has implemented some great technology in their products but they have no understanding let alone desire to be in the lowend market and therefore they will always be a niche manufaturer.

@DetroitBORG Apple's success IS Marketing.
- the iPhone is presently inferior to certain other devices, Windows Phone and Android alike, in terms of spec.
- the iPad is inherently inferior to the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
- The iPod Touch is a solution in search of a problem.
- The Apple TV is in search of an identity.
I like Apple computers. But their mobile devices are all marketing and looks.
Side note: I thought he was going to mention Microsoft Bob.
