  • I used to baby sit for the bass player.

  • I heard this on "darkwave" on sat radio.. OMG !! i actually got here other than by knowing good music.. I feel like the kids now who get here because of their favorite song is now part of a toilet paper commercial. i'm ashamed..

  • @gewglesux This song is? I just looked up alternative music on some websites, and checked out some of the songs.....that's how i found Siouxsie, The Cure, Bauhaus, and Depeche Mode.......

  • @YumiSonohara Hi Yumi,

Top tune this!! you agree? I dont think i would have ever found this tune without my SAT radio. the radio is not what it used to me... i still listen to a lot of college radio.. Are you in Japan? my GF is there.. with out me?:(

    thanks for the reply

  • I am so glad I found this video! The music video is great, and THIS live version is great, but there is another live version posted on youtube that is embarrassingly horrible and Dave is missing half the notes. This live version shows that they CAN perform flawlessly LIVE.

  • I remember quite a lot of Davenport Vanian look a likes at the then called barrel organ pub in digbeth Birmingham :)

  • Dave Vanian now looks just like Jon Lovitz.

  • 12 Are Grimly Fiendish

  • Who remembers the comic strip Grimly Fiendish?

  • I luv luv this song! \m/

  • this is a cool song

  • I just re-watched Austin Powers, and realized that he totally fucking ripped off Dave Vanian's wardrobe.

  • Please, whoever makes boys, whoever you are, please make more boys with the desire to have dave vanian hair. *sigh*

  • @Glowb0t as soon as science finds a cure for thinning hair I will!

  • Stupid but brilliant.

  • Where is Sensible?!

  • @aristotle358 Let's see... about the time this was being filmed, I'm guessing he was either recording "Smash It Up Pt. 4" or making a Weetabix commercial. Or possibly having a couple pints of Old Peculier (belch!) -- 1b2s

  • this song was probably the first song i heard... ever.

  • @MissSauron3000 BEST.COMMENT.EVER.

  • @housydoing I'm serious, my mum had it on tape in our car and listened to it every car journey. I grew up listening to the best band ever!

  • Awesome song from an awesome band - love 'em always!

  • Looking forward seeing them live at WGT 2011!! **yeah**

  • shit song.

  • Only Morrison had a better voice!

  • @Stonehenge40

I Agree 100% and The Damned's cover of L.A. Woman is the best version IMHO.

  • Great song, but The Damned today are even better !, Rat's gone Captains back, and the last album one of there best ever ! check Dark Asteroid, a tribute to Syd Barret.

  • That guitarist is deffo related to Janine Duvitski... the woman who played Pippa Trench in 'One Foot in the Grave'. That schnoz is a right giveaway!

  • One of the best tracks ever written by a truly original and excellent band. Wow, this takes me back... going on long drives in the countryside (me and my sis, and our respective boyfriends) with the sole intention of listening to the album this comes from (Phantasmagoria - amazing) from start to finish, at 120 dB or thereabouts on a £3,000 (back in the early 90s!) car stereo... about as good as it gets :) And wow, Dave Vanian simply defines sex appeal, for me... looks, dress AND voice! :D

  • Dave V...he was beautiful.

  • @spw143 That he was. That he was.

  • phantasmagoria...great album.

  • Wow, that's a nutty look he has going on there. I guess the 80's messed everyone's sense of style up a bit.

  • @evilashxero This was a very sought after look back in the day. Had my hair been long enough I would have dyed a white badger stripe in it. Sadly it was shaven and long on top and yellow. Dave Vanian has less to answer for than I do. Oooh, he was sexy but.

  • @evilashxero Obviously you weren't there at the time!!... the 80s gave everyone the chance to have ANY style they chose, from Dave Vanian's nothing-short-of-sex-incarnate Goth/Victorian glamour, to skinhead, to punk, to New Romantic, to, in the main (despite the misconception) most people's simply ordinary and boring appearance. Those of use who were 80s teens really do feel sorry for today's generation... we had EVERY style there is to choose from - nowadays there's, well, none. Shame.

  • @NellJSmith You're wrong actually you have every style you just have to look from goth rock to hardcore from Punk to Techno its all there still you just need to dive in and fine it.

  • @NellJSmith do what you want and fuck everyone else

  • @NellJSmith Well, it's not all bad for some of the teens who create their own style. (Me included.) But, I do wish I was born in the 70's or 80's.

  • buenazo

  • impresionante..... sencillamente increible verlos!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @murcielago06gt actually there is a wee bit of a Madness influence there :)

  • Does anyone have sheet music for the harpsichord parts? I can't figure it out :-/ Would be much appreciated :)

  • spot on this still sounds top! Bit of ska there in the background too!! Mint!

  • David Vanian: the Gothfather.

  • Loved them back in the day, finally saw them play a Halloween show a couple of years and they were *AMAZING!!!!*

  • How does pale & pinched Dave sing like that. His voice is INCREDIBLE.

  • My life would be complete if I could play the harpsichord part to this.

  • que grandioso este video,en su mejor momento y su mejor disco.

  • They're damned good, eh eh? wink wink, nudge nudge etc.

  • Shite

  • seen them live loads of times was there when sensible played naked lol

  • i'm too young to have seen them in concert but man would i have loved that opportunity. the damned is surely one of the best rock bands ever!

  • @tamarware they still play live

  • @tamarware they are still gigging new tour next yeare

  • I bought anything because I really liked the cover...been tracking them backwards ever since...excellent band...Plan 9 from outer space for me.

  • I think I might get a fan of them as my ears like what they hear :D

  • deathtoakira666 you must be joking? The Damned were around years before The Misfits with Vanian dressing and writing about the Gothic thing from the start. You need a history lesson boy. You've got it all backwards and think you'd do well with a class in Punk 101.

  • @Hankdriver FUCK YEAH! They were there long before the Misfits started.

  • @Hankdriver 1977–1983, 1995–present Misfits

1976-1988 The Damned sorry one year get you facts right years befor lmao

  • @Hankdriver and Danzig wanted to have a band with Dave Vanian as the singer. they were unable to do it so you have Samhain. Also the Damned were the 1st punk bandto get signed to major label, before the Sex Pistols. Great band!

  • deathtoakira R U for real? the Damned were around years before the misfits with Vanian always wearing and into the goth thing. i think you need a history lesson boy. Im sure you never even saw the original misfits did ya? thats what i thought

  • @Hankdriver i'm a big Misfits fan (Original Misfits) and they toured with the Damnedin London and Glen is a big fan of the Damned.

  • I saw this on whistle test in the mid eighties, was a fan ever since

  • He's so cool

  • gah. if only i could marry vanian.

  • @deathtoakira666 The Damned could blow the Misfits out of the water. Try something that's not shoved down your throat by hot topic.

  • @longlivetheloud2

fu*k no man, the misfits fucking kill,i me so the damned but theire both gnar

  • @deathtoakira666

And when I said hot topic, I talked about how most people only even know about the Misfits because of them being on shirts of 14 year olds. The Misfits are 'cool' to like; the Damned, not so much. And that's why I like them.

  • @longlivetheloud2 your right trendy stores dont care im old school nuf sed

  • @deathtoakira666 grow up the music is for all of us die die my darling

  • @deathtoakira666 Damned formed in 1976. Misfits 1977

  • Wow, really?

  • @longlivetheloud2 dont worry about a store who only wants your money they would sell n sync if it made money

  • this song reminds me of sex in the mornin hehe

  • I Love This Song So Much <3 <3 favorite

  • Love this song. Saw The Damned in Croydon on Saturday...sadly they didn't do this.

  • The song that got me into the Damned twenty four years later still love it and them

  • i hate it when i show this to my friends and they say "oh look its Sweeney Todd".

  • Damned play pop, still pure theatre. Great to see again, thanks for sharing.

  • sigh...my birthsong...and with passing dates, still The Fallible Fiend...my undying thanx to a Damned great band...Pleasant Screams from under the bridge...

  • for those of you interested in the b side of this single 'edward the bear' was in fact written by captain sensible , and originally recorded by captains short lived 1978 band 'king' .. 'kings' version was called 'baby sign here with me' after captain left the damned re-wrote the lyrics and the song became 'edward the bear'.. i spoke to captain in 1985 and he was not happy that the damned had used his song without even giving him a writing credit

  • in the darkness in my comfortable bed next to my window were i feel the nice breeze come inside from the calm night that wanders around outside, i drift into sleep listening to this song, simply amazing..

  • gawjus Vanian

  • the damned are the best and what a great vid

  • love

  • Dave's got a skunk on his head! Could have rabies! Hold still mate, I'll shoot it off fer yuz...

  • great song, great band, brill live.

  • fuck there punk past was awesome and there goth well its awsme as well

  • This was the song that turned me on to The Damned back in the mid-80's. Brilliant tune, and I fell in love w/ everything they did before and have done since. Proud to say that I've had the honor to see them live when they came to The Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC back in 2001. One of my all-time favorite bands!

  • What The Hell Is This????? The Top 40 Damned?

  • Jim Morrison meets The Wiggles!

  • There used to be this British kids comic in the 60's/70's called 'SMASH' and it featured this right Nasty Bastard called 'Grimly Feendish'. I'm guessing that's where Dave 'Lily Munster' Vanian got the idea for this one from.

  • It'll always be The Damned as long as Vanian's still going. You can't replace that voice.

  • @VampyreCake damn straight

  • @VampyreCake WELL SAID!

  • @VampyreCake hes actually the creative director for one of englands biggest makeup companies now

  • @VampyreCake Get Vic Victor of The Koffin Kats......

  • When is this from?

  • What's with all the anger? Take a good look at Dave's face in pretty much all his vids, even when he's talking about England making money from the Tower of London's torture chambers, and he's removed enough from the situation to present his art with class. Can't we present our opinions with a little less slutty 'tude?

  • No Captain then Bad Song!

  • Erm, (yorknomads) ill talk to him and see where you can get a copy, he might still be on myspace, im not sure though.

  • κρυφα απο ποιον??? επρεπε να σε ενημερωσω ???

  • @aastenu Safws!!!! Eite proswpika eite via e mail. Kata ta alla den sou arese e? :/

  • they totally ripped it in sweeny todd

  • @aastenu vlepoume kryfa to video ???? :p

  • perfecto

  • I think this was their first public airing & performance without the Captain.....from BBC2's Old Grey Whistle Test in '85.....?

It was huge shock to hear the presenter & top bloke Mark Ellen announce 'without The Captain....' but it was a great single & album, & the Captain's subsequent solo releases are still, even now, staggeringly good pieces to listen to....check 'em out....!!!

  • :D love this song

  • QUALITY!

  • (yorknomads) If your asking me, hah, yeah he did do papa loco a little while ago. He's still does some recording an that, and i think he mentioned doing a new album not too long ago now. So listen out! Its good stuff. Im proud to be his daughter, talented bloke. x

  • i bet you are proud aswell a nice bloke (he said hello to me in sheffield once, haha)brilliant on the keyboards aswell,is papa loco available from anywhere????if ya on facebook add me rich peter kenyon leeming,ta.....

  • Can't believe they've changed this much. Not to mention Sid Vicious could have been the lead singer.. That would have turned out very differently. I love them though :)

  • The Damned friggin' rule.

  • He's always been so attractive.

  • you are the crap

    the damned kick ass

miss roman jugg and rat scabies great guys.

  • Ow!

  • @chirich2 Sure...For me The real Damned are the Damned Damned Damned and Machine Gun Etiquette albums...

  • @TransparentVisions still i think that phantasmagoria and especialy grave disorder are the greatest abums of the deamned... but their whole discography is awsome...

  • Romans my dad. This is a tune.

  • really????whats he upto know last i heard he had an albm out called papa loco????thx...

  • oh, and before people start hatin on scarletpie below me, i didnt realize my friends profile was logged in, so thumbs down the right guy!!

  • fuck you posers, this is my favorite damned song.

  • Yep! With you mate! The Damned are the Damned! They are part of my history...loved them as a kid and still lovin them know!

  • too bloody right

  • @scarletpie it isn't mine, but it is the song that got me into them, so for that I am eternally grateful, though I doubt if they have done on I dislike, still a great song though and as I kid I loved Grimly Fiendish in the Monster Fun annuals. Enjoy, and cheers mate

  • I think they recently released a new album, gothish as well, and Dave Vanian was or is doing something else... like gothabilly crap.

  • Fuck you! (chirich2)

They've always been amazing, always will be. Why would it matter if they changed their style a little? Everyone I know who has heard this song loves it, just because YOU don't like it doesn't make it a "terrible" song.

  • @DisneyPressedRoses. What do you know, your a yank. All you lot ever do is destroy other peoples countrys.

  • Roman Jugg It's Amazing.

  • love u dave :|

  • This performance is from Whistle Test ,still got it on vhs somewhere

  • i have done an animation for grimly fiendish now... a little "petition" i call it...

  • The Capt and Rat along with Vanian are the damned. I think the best line included Algy Ward.

Saw them in Northampton a few weeks ago (with Sensible) and they were fucking awesome. Much better than seeing them about 8-9 yrs agoThe line up in this vid sucks...sorry but my opinion

Bye the way Sensible is an excellent music as well as a great show man. The damned are back!

  • probably my favorite from them. what album is it from?

  • Phantasmagoria

  • While Captain and Rat aren't present, this song is still bitchin-rad.

  • Rat is there!

  • First time I saw the Damned was in this era, twenty odd years on and i still am in love, superb!

  • haha

  • We see this next Saturday

  • one day... I will see Grimly Fiendish live... one day....

  • Gotta love Roman Juggs!!

  • Right, no captain , no rat you get an over dratic vain without the goofball humor to ballance him out!

  • sorry but this aint the real damned......saw them at this time, but this is sold out.....real damned has to include the captain and rat

  • Saw the Damned several times back in the 80s - Black album, MGE and Phantasmagoria are by far their best work

  • DAVE IS THE MAN

  • best one is a compilation called....light at the end of the tunnel..in my opinion or damned damned damned...

  • OMG they rock

  • Great rendition of this.

  • I mean in terms of which should I buy 1st. I can't buy all of them at once.

  • I love it, this is the first song I have ever heard. They don't even sound live

  • What album should i start with?

  • The Damned have a broad enough set of material that since you like this, it's worth starting with "Phantasmagoria." Check out some of the other vids online. Try "Neat Neat Neat".

  • you could try the best of, got a good selection

  • phantasmagoria, anything, the black album.

search youtube videos and see what you like.

and don't forget to consider captain sensible's jet boy jet girl. rathr disgusting, but that's punk. :-)))

  • Machine gun etiquette or Damned Damned Damned or if you can fin it Damned anthology

  • sorry meant to type find

  • This song is about a character from a brilliant 70`s UK comic- Shiver `n Shake(fleetwood)- The artist(possible)? Leo Baxendale, had a real punk attitude to his work. - Grimley is the Damned personified! Brilliant track

  • Wot no Moose Harris?!?

  • this is from 1985 or 1986, Moose was a member in around 1993 - 1995

  • Great performance, love this song!

  • Dave is hoooooot.

  • I love his hair

  • love this song so much.

  • Comment removed

  • (Sigh!) Can Dave Vanian get any hotter looking?

  • I'm still looking for a vibrator with Dave Vanian's voice instead of batteries!!! God, if only ..............

  • I wouldn't mind access to his wardrobe XD.

It's not like he wears all that dracula stuff anymore...

  • hi all,,, does anyone remember the b side to this? edward the bear? brilliant but cant find it on here :-(
