I was on this call. I'm the second hose line that came in later. This is a volunteer department that is at the mercy of who shows up. Many times we have to do things a little off of protocol from being under staffed. I don't know who was "engineer"that day, but it's usually who ever fills the spot (scary). I've since gone to the fire academy and learned a lot of things we should do differently. These guys have other full time jobs. They do the best they can to protect the community
That's why you always have a buddy for support holding the hose behind you. After he makes a fool out of himself trying to be the hero, his buddy decides to saunter over and help out. Makes us all look bad.
@Thorpe741 Firemen get killed by having one guy on a line at a CAR FIRE? Really?! Let's call a second alarm for manpower, and put HAZMAT and ATR on stand-by, just in case.
I just finished FF school and they tought us to never get yo close to the car like they did i mean common sense. For more reasons but this is one Most modern car parts are made of a metal called magnesium one because its cheap, two because its strong Now does anyone know what happens when water soakes into magnesium BOOM! it explodes into flames and shrapnal. And the reason it does that is because of the hydrogen molicules in the water thats why the put a coat of crome or steel on it but that melts
technically your supposed to use class d for magnesium blocks but you can still use copious amounts of water which is just as good i finished FF1 for ny state a year ago but here in huntington manor we acctually use foam when it gets really bad
I believe its a good habit to always assure pass devices are armed. Some packs you have no choice. But, someone a safety officer, trainer, or other student need to secure the device to assure thier is no problem. False alarms on pass devices tend to make firefighters on the fireground complacent and ignore them.
We were at a school fire The engineer had the pressfure relief valve set at a 100 psi. I needed more pressure I signaled to him up up up. His pressure on the gauge went to 300 and then he turned off the pressure gauge delivering me the 300. It blew the hose and sent me 30 ft back. The hose is rated at 400 psi. No injury.
CLOWNS!!!! I think they need to learn some more hose line management. I do have to agree on the PPE. And props to the guy with the second line. He must have realized that the guy that fell on his ass is a complete moron and if he didnt put the fire out then nobody would.
ive seen paid guys do the same thing! paid or volunteer, its good to see full ppe with pack, probally should have had 2 firefighters on the main attack line at least. but at least it wasnt like a vid of a big city dept, with no pack and a booster line. one more thing attack at a 45 degree angle to be alittle bit safer.
Sure there are as couple mistakes that happened on this one but i did see full PPE and alot of departments in our area don't take car fires seriously. You'll see'em out there with bunker pants, a helmet, and a tank top!? In spite of a few mishaps, you guys put FF safety first! Nothin wrong with having a second line on a car fire. One little tip! (this drives me crazy) PASS devices are only suppose to be activated when a FF is down! Unless your down... shut em off!!!!
Well, with all the obvious 'wrongs' that occurred, at least the FF was able to keep a handle on the hose and get it under control, rather than letting it get out of his hands!
It is a stupid car fire. Why do they have two hose lines out anyway. Put the dumb thing out and move on. Stupid people who don't know what they are doing. I bet they are volunteers
are you stupid or just a paid firefighter. Volunteers go through the same training as you did. If you are a real firefighter, you know that mistakes happen, paid or not. You have no right to talk about volunteers. They do your job for free. Get some pride
First: It is a car fire very good and you cant just put water on it and be done. Second: There is two lines Watch the video again. Third: Volunteers are trained to the same standards.
i think this is a problem at the pump handle.. operator didnt have the pressure relief set, and when the other F.F. shut his line dwn the pressure bumped up.
@SCFD388 exactly..you can hear the problem as well as see it.....Some "pump operator" , and I use that term loosely, would have gotten a good ass chewing after this fire..
@FireCaptE9 I hear ya, we had a house fire one time and the "pump operator" injured two guys by jacking the pressure way too high cuz he was too busy on his phone gettin baseball scores.

Does the PASS really need to be activated when putting out a car fire?

Newer systems are integrated into the bottle. Air is on so is the PASS
