you're wrong, an omnibounce doesnt soften the light down! it only directs the light in all directions! The softness of the light is caused by the apparent size of the lightsource!
External flash pictures come out more 3D, you're are definitely right about that.

why would you use a third party bounce dome on the SB900 when it comes with one already made? and much better than the Sto-fen one

ive got a third party kind of lightsphere and it works just as well as the gary fong's! great or rather best diffuser ive had by far!
