  • why do you take the hair off?

  • well, we were in the process of tanning the hides...meaning you take the hair off, cure it, and voila, you've got leather.

  • so what is brain tanning? does that actually incorporate brains?

  • Err, it's the chemical makeup of brains that breaks down the mucus membrane of the hide's "weave".... There's many things that work for it; from eggs, to chemicals, and yes, brains....ew.

  • @BubbleInTheBrain - Small correction: Its not a chemical reaction. All you're doing is introducing oil into the hide, coating its fibers with it, and then moving them continuously to prevent the "hide glue" from bonding them together.

  • @silnthowl

Small correction; They didn't say it was a chemical reaction, but that it was the chemical makeup of the braining solution that did it.

Secondly, there are chemical reactions going on. Anytime you combine substances that are not perfectly inert, you get a reaction. The fact that you are inhibiting the chemicals in the "hide glue" from forming the normal bonds by adding fats is a chemical reaction in itself!

Your explanation is pretty accurate, but your correction isn't. :)

  • Thats awsome, this is the shit we need to see on MTV....
