@iSeiranai -- Neither did I. I always had the impression that they might be about the size of a largish quail or something (I've only ever seen them filmed once before), but by the look of things, it's quite a bit bigger (as well as quite a bit heavier) than that. I wish they hadn't dragged it out by its feet, though...and I don't blame it one bit for struggling! How would one of THEM have liked it if something much bigger had dragged him out of his house by his feet??
@Palomablanca1978 -- You might appreciate like the noise they make (sort of a rattling sound a bit like a frog)...especially since they usually come out at night! They do look sweet, though...
Kiwi's are so unique and special. To lose our national bird (who is now closer to a mammal than bird, evolutionarily speaking) would be a great upset. Fortunately for the kiwi, it's cute, therefore conservation funding is reasonably easy to obtain. We have many other native treasures that aren't so cute, that are threatened or endangered that need our help such as native gecko's, skink's and invertebrates such as weta.
i think this programme is quite commendable. one of the reasons most people don't care about this sort of thing is that they aren't aware of it...... by letting people know about this stuff we are broadly helping a cause.
@wkkimmy To be honest, it was mostly Wikipedia where I got the info, so not exactly 100% reliable. However, it did say that the bird was named based on the Maori word, and that the fruit only got the name later, when the old name, the Chinese Gooseberry, fell out of favor.
@wendighoul You're bang on and although I haven't looked at Wikipedia about this, it was when our Grower/Exporting people realised that they had a goldmine to be sat on they rebranded the fruit for international consumption as the 'Kiwifruit'. At that time New Zealand was the only country in the world producing kiwifruit in 'commercial' quantities, and this was an unarguable NZ identity. Then the stupid b------- started to sell the plants all over the world, and we lost our monopoly. Ah well.
@wkkimmy Just a bit of useless information in case you are even slightly interested. Feel free to forget. Kiwi fruit is Yang-Tao, or the Chinese Gooseberry. It was brought to NZ in the late 1800s - early 1900s. It flourished and the NZ farmers decided to rename it in the 1950s so that the fruit grown in NZ wouldn't be confused with that grown in China (there was alot of anti-China sentiment at the time as China was considered an ally with the then USSR during the Cold War).
I thought kiwis only live in New Zealand and they are nocturnal.
So why are they grabbing a Kiwi in the day? and Why in the description does it say "On a journey through Malaysia and Indonesia to track down the deadly Komodo dragon, the travellers help to release turtles into the wild and encounter one of the deadliest snakes on earth." ?
OMIGOSH! I almost screamed its so cute!!!! Ahh! I don't know what to do with myself! I've never seen anything so cute!!!!

@iSeiranai They are related to the extinct Moa which were the largest birds on the planet before they went.

If you want to see a really good kiwi video, then watch Piwi The Kiwi starring in his new YouTube video - WORLD WONDER FROM DOWN UNDER.
WARNING: Some of the language used is NOT politically correct. May offend Namby Pambies, Hoity Toities and other weak-minded bastards!

as much i love animals, i think they made some mistake on naming the "kiwi". LOL its named after a fruit.
wkkimmy 1 year ago
@wkkimmy After doing a little checking, it seems the bird had the name first. The fruit was not known as a Kiwi until the 1950s apparently.

@wendighoul really? wow,..im not sure when the kiwi was discovered and named but i guess it was earier then the fruit :/

That's not cool just ripping the bird out of its hole!
Kierstie01 2 years ago
@Kierstie01 uh...
ripping? its not like its been physically attached to the hole. they just removed it to look at it. didnt harm it at all.
of course the kiwi didnt understand what was going on so it might have been upset. but still.

Kiwis are only in NZ, and the reason that they have one is that they pulled it out of it's nest (it was having a sleep).
And the description is off.
