The Apollo 8 crew really did say this in a broadcast to earth on Christmas Eve 1968 from space while preparing to orbit the moon.

It's sad that they actually want(ed) to take "under God" out of the pledge of allegiance. When you look back at this, it just shows you how much we've changed. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure you would get in major trouble for doing this.

@Firejack95 ... Yes they did! They read from the Book of Genesis... Sadly, they took some heat from Nasa officials when they got back. I think it was entirely appropriate... They must've known beforehand the powerful emotions they would experience when they saw for the first time the Earth rising above the lunar horizon. Would could be more fitting at that time than than the opening verses of the Book of Genesis.
