  • I like the 27/81 sticker. Very droll!

  • @SpuriousEmission Yes many Jumbos came with them.......LOL

  • In the film Whiteout 2009 I noticed a Ham International Jumbo with green LEDE channel readout at chapter3 00:23:03 on bluray.

Wow nice to hear the hash again its been some 23 years since I went 10-7 lol I prefer the illegal bands I don't obey governmental laws I call it free speech commutation.

I'm down in Bournemouth haven been all life. Managed to reach as far as Falkland Islands on the 28HMz lol I jumped on a band and asked the guy at Southampton if the guy downunder could hear, "yes"

  • @EmpireLS56KW I think the radio maybe is a USA Galaxy, or a Ranger 2995 base. These area modern radio built now , that uses the same cases that the Ham International Jumbo and Colt/Marko Excalibur. Of coarse you may be 100% correct and someone has fitted a green readout. But no stock Jumbo had anything other than a red one.

  • Only thing is the frequency counter read-out I’d loss myself at times with that as I’d need paper with the channels written out. The coolest thing I can remember was “the scrambler” that encrypted the transmission and you need two one to decoder and one to encode the signal. An old CB buddy loaned me his for a short while and it bugged the hell out of everyone because at first it sounds like one of the SSB modes. LOL

  • Only thing is it doesn’t have the CW hardly why they call it multimode when it doesn’t have CW, took me month to memorize the Morse Code back around 1986, I can barely remember the sequence of code today.

Only problem is I’m lousy at sending Morse, I’m too slow at it. lol --. A --. B and so on or have it got it back-to-front? I think Morse, was phased out during the 90's even thou I was off the air, I seem to remember a friend telling me who did Ham as he was on the CB till he got his Ham card

  • I remember back in the day, going on the triple nickle running a 200 whisky burner through my 3/4 wave silver rod, neighbours knocking at the door, lines running across there tv sets, some could hear me talking.

Years later i used to work qrp 1.4 watts with a good set up would get you into italy no problem on ssb..

If i remember rightly you were only allowed to use 0.4watts on a dipole, but you could still get out miles, its all down to the set up.. power wont do much to improve signal

  • @26highstreet Only 4 watts or 0.4 watts with a large base antenna were allowed and only on UKFM and not SSB legally. The good old days for sure

  • Comment removed

  • @m0ogy i dont think a lot of people took any notice of using only 0.4 watts on a base antenna, doubt half of them even had a licence anyway, they have done away with the licence now..

i could never understand why ssb was never made legal in the uk, it certainly carried a signal further and with little background noise...

  • @26highstreet AM and SSB was not legalised due to Interference with TVs (so they said).......shame realy

  • @m0ogy Seems daft that am could cause interference really seeing as there were 50kw am radio station transmitters around at the time and they never caused interference to tv etc:)

as long as an antenna is properly grounded and set up correctly it should be fine, but there were people that just put up antennas on there roofs using tv coax and didnt swr them in etc.

I preferrred ssb due to little background noise and less idiots around, dont think there many around at all anymore

  • Not bad for only 200watts on the ole Snake Cobra 148 GTL-DX that had two double lows mid and three high bands triple.

  • I might have a look around for another CB preferable a Cobra 148 GTL-DX plenty of of them on ebay today and at half way half the cost of what they cost 28 years ago. £180.00

  • @EmpireLS56KW Good luck in getting back on radio Fella.........Dave

  • @m0ogy Cheers Dave

Yes I hope. I’ve looked around ebay and see there small numbers of Snakes going cheaply.

I’m presently committed to home cinema as frequencies of sound turns me on. lol When I have the opportunity I’ll look around for Snake. 10-10 for, now break.

    Andy

  • The echo mic was annoying when you’re listen for voice frequency modulation, not wads of echo reverberation.

The Belcom sounds familiar has that can handle easily around the 27MHz but I don’t have Ham licence to operate it on the upper 28MHz below no problem. Yeah I knew of two people who had a Belcom fancy gits they where lol. I think it was around £300 to £400 new back around 1982?

  • @EmpireLS56KW OK,on the Belcom , I own two of them......top radios Indeed

  • I think the scrambler was no bigger than a DVD case a simple few buttons on/off switch I think? Can’t recall who made them? It was black. lol You know the pc is kinder like a CB the mouse is the mic lol the keyboard lets you select words and channels. lol but its far from being a CB. I even mobile phones I find boring now.

DX-ing is kinder like fishing its waiting for some good ole skip to come along and catch bite. lol

  • Looking for a Superstar 2000 only brings up results like "Jesus Christ super star"…Jesus Christ, can’t you find a Superstar 2000!? LOL I think ebay has sense of humour. LOL

  • It’s a Ham International Multimode II isn’t underneath Jumbo which does look fancy for home-base the Snake is a bit for mobile and home. I mean can you see Jumbo on slide mount for the car lol umm hmm nowhere to fit. I haven’t looked for Jumbo’s on eaby I only looked for Cobra148GLT-DX several hours ago.#

Only issue is base station aerial because its council property and I doubt I’d get away with an 18 foot ½ wave on the roof. lol

  • Wow I don’t believe it! There’s a few Jumbo’s onb ebay one even has the box! Did they not stop production on these years ago? So a box is plus. The prices are mostly bidding so bidding like a vulture. I want to buy some cinema seats, so no worries looks like plenty of Jumbo’s going around.

Looking for Epron versions and most are ether not working and sold for spare parts, wonderful!

Oh, I see an Epron model not you by any chance lol 3days left up to £88.50 some lucky bugger going to get it

  • @EmpireLS56KW you'll find any boxed Jumbo or Cobra 148GTL DX in "as new" stock condition will fetch big money these days..........not unknown to hit £400 on E-bay. Just buy a good one.....as loads of junk "Wrecks" on there too Mate........73's Dave

  • @m0ogy Nothing like new in the box, you’re absolutely right.

  • Oh, just find one near the bottom of the page wow haven’t seen one those in 26 years! 1bid 5days to go £29.99 its in good nick! A B C D + E (low, low) low mid high (high, high) no mods. I had friend that mod it to (quad low) not that many people are down there. LOL

Okay, cheers Dave I won't hog this channel any-more for today, Youtube only allows 500 words per post. sigh

    10-10 for now.

  • @TheDiddlysquat No Waldorf and Statller on this one....LOL

  • Very nice....i have the Alan560 with Thurner +Three!

    13OD157

    13CT157 Op. Carsten

  • @13CT157 Very nice radio Carsten indeed

  • Very nice radio :)

  • @technogatto Thankyou, one of the all time classics indeed...........thanks

  • thats a verry expensive door stop.

  • Wouldn't know as I use A Cobra 148GTL DX as my "ExpensiveDoor Stop"..........LOL

  • Has the CB band in the UK shown a decline in interest during the last 10 years as it has within the United States?

  • It seems to getting better now.......but it never will be back like the 1970-1980s....Regards Dave

  • are you havin a laugh with that sticker 27/81

  • Ham International fitted some on these radios............god nows why I'm sure a blind Buzby in his Commer van could tell it wasn't a type approved radio...........LOL

  • thats a real mans radio right there, screw all that ham cq cq shit, go watch my videos to see whos better, ham or cb

  • Hello my friend this CB/Ham debate is rather childish I think..........I just don't get why this is going on!!!!........I'm a proud CBer of 31 years ...........and the same as your "Extra Class" Ham license holder for 10 years.........The real clever guys do both .........and "Diss" neither........Regards from the UK. DAVE

  • I'll have a view ,no problem,I guess I'm the only "Ham" who Riverrat and Redneck Mike Senior subscribe too.........so like I say I enjoy both and know the "For and Against" for both!!.........catch you soon!!!

  • I bought one of these back in 1984 off a guy called 'sunny jim' nr Harleston in Norfolk, he smoked Woodbines and when I got the rig home it stunk the house out, I never did get rid of the smell from this radio... funny..... things you remember, also I found the ham radios a bit basey.

  • Yes a good story there mate....

  • Thanks for the interest .......73's DAVE

  • I still have my stack of A.M. rigs from the days of old (I was the 3rd person to own one in Hampshire), including a couple of ancient (still working) Jaws MK2's and my trusty fully operational Jumbo (with a mod that disables the AM side, just in case.......

Must dust them off and start using them again one day soon. :o)

CB was wrecked when it went legal.

  • Thanks for the comment........"The Good Old Days" ......for sure!!

  • Hi Dave, I have just acquired a Ham International Jumbo. It's in good condition but has has a lot of mods done to it which hasn't done it much good. I need to do some work on it to get it in full working condition. Anyway this is a great video, keep em' coming. 73 Pete G0OMH

  • Yes ,this one has an Eprom in it but nicely done by a quite famous "Rig Doctor" in the early 90's called Simon@Tadcaster,don't know what become of him.I'm trying to find a mode switch for it as it's a bit dicky.I have a "Brand new" "Boxed" later MK3 Jumbo with 240 channels stock and also a very little used Colt Excalibur MK 3 again boxed as new...but these are stored away mate,I just adore the old Ham/CB Radios as you can tell.........73's DAVE (M0OGY).

  • thanks Dave thanks for the info, I need a "Mode" switch as mines hit and miss do they sell them too??.....cheers DAVE

  • I am a licenced amateur as well, but I don't get your point about posting this video........as you can plainly see I collect old radios and I'm only RXing on it ,and not using it to transmit on any mode ,let alone SSB,I,m sure Mr Buzby wouldn't tell me off for that........LOL

  • Dont know if you can remember the young dudes that posted a video on here of them speeding over 100mph? the police used the video in court to make a conviction..i would never have done what you just did thou :( very carless indeed! i used to have one of these years ago and i'm now also a fully licensed Amature. Quick lock the front door!! lol

  • You are an idiot. he is operating legally, get a life.

  • Shut up you tosser!! The jumbo is not legal to own in the uk unless modified to 10m ONLY and certified by the R.I.S.

Who's the idiot now?? do some homework schoolboy! and while you at it try sucking on an egg? chickens lips!!

  • R.I.S. this, don't be a hater because you're a duck. Just because your mother says your station is 10-8 doesn't make it so. Go try some qrp cw on your g5rv antenna you duck

  • Thanks for your support Linearone.......Kind Regards Dave (M0OGY) Vice Chairman BDARC

  • Please dont post swearing on my page Strawberrycream69...very un "Ham" like OM

  • Google Spectrum Commuinications in Dorset.. They sell replacements

  • Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed the "Oldskool videos".......Regards DAVE

  • Hi Dave

Looking at your JUMBO like the 27/81 sticker ... Great collection you have I'm green with envy, glad you liked the mags.

    Regards, Peter.

  • Yes it is quite novel having a "Legal" CB 27/81 badge on a radio that was ilegal in every county in the world!!!...I don't think it would of fooled Buzby in 1982 some how.......LOL...good times!....DAVE

  • Freaks me out with the 27/81 badge on a multiband rig like a jombo ;-)

  • Thankyou FastForward and nobodyimportant23423.......I see my Ham Intenational Jumbo video is well viewed so I guess theres alot of 30/40 somthings who fondly remember these.......I,m a "A" class Ham operator now ,but still just adore the old CB/11 meter radios from the past .......73's DAVE (M0OGY)

  • yep, I feel the same way, I am a ham these days but I still love cb. I always will.

    73's jay m3vpi

  • I had a Jumbo for a few years.. wish I kept it :-S

  • Great vid bye the way, I always wanted a jumbo, but they were very hard to come accross. I ended up with a superstar 3900f black fronted. Still got it now, but as you say, CB is dead here in Manchester so ive never bothered with it.

  • Get on ham

  • Cheers!!!!!

  • Such a shame that CB has gone down the pan. A combination of mobile phones, internet & pmr446 have killed it. The amount of idiots what was on there also led to many CBers selling up.

  • I think it should be revived CB can be great fun, I dont think PMR 446 is that ' good' you can throw a cat further that you can TX LoL

  • Thanks Riverrat........like your "Ham reviews" ........very funny.......we're not all sad old men you know!!!.......LOL.....Regards Dave (M0OGY) North Lincs UK
