hey jawaballs, it was fun hanging with you and fritz at games day. anyway, i realised you still havent done a how to paint red power armour video yet, so are they ever gonna be up?
@tmbGr1msbyProduction Get some Black Primer from The Army Painter. It gives a great finish that is ready for highlighting, no further painting needed!
i have a question... im doing a dark angels and blood angels army, im still not sure what you mean by inking. basically use the dirty paint water and go over it hitting all the crevices? i didnt find your video on the arms and jump packs. just the heads inking. thanks for the help too! great work
@GEOdozer420 The entier set is available on my estore, the link is at the top of my youtube profile. Inking is no longer the term, it is now Washing, and the update for that is in the online video download set. But you got the basic of it. Using a liquid dark color to fill in the recesses and make it look shadowed. Now the proper material is called Baal Red.
hey I have a question I am just being and want to know how to use ink paint properly. You mainly use it in areas you cant get to and to make better detail right.
if ive base coated my models chaos black what would you suggest to get a bright red finish ( they were going to be ultramarines but i've decided to make a blood angel army!) thanks
I asked this question to a GW staff, and they replied saying, you could even have "Blue" Blood angels. So im pretty sure you can make them orange - ish :D
i still dont understand has he went over the armour of the model again with blood red and basically missed all crevices or has he just covered the larger areas?
general question here, my bro has primed his blood angels black but now wants to prime em white, if he sprays white over the black is it gonna make the paint on the model too thick (i seen models destoryed by double basing)
The term Ink and Wash are the same. Using a mostly fluid pigment to 'wash' over the recessed areas and fill them in with darkness creating the illusion of shadow.
hehehe don't worry jawaballs I do that with my brush and accidentaly drank (or ate) blood red and I'm fine :-) *starts to choke in background* I'm kidding :)
I just finished using it like an ink with my fine detail brush and compared it to painting the whole model in it, and let me tell you that just putting a lot in just the crevices looks much better and makes it look highlighted. Also where did the inking video go?
Ahhh that sucks. If you purchase over 50 dollars worth of bases from my site, I will pick up the brush and blades and mail them with the bases for you.
Dude ... keep a cup of water beside you dip it in there every so often and then just twirl the end with your fingers. Paint isn't good to have in your gums (I think someone said that before) it causes build up.
Dude saftey tip, paint is not a good thing to be putting in your mouth even if it is none toxic, if you keep putting it in your mouth as much as i see you doing it could cause some damage to your gums.
Just intresting, what colors you use for HLs? Since I saw at the begin of series started you used fiery orange as one, but now GW quited to make it so what you use now?
struggling to see the details in this video as your hands are in the way: In the purchased video's do you use different angles? For example, i cant tell if youre inking the entire model or just the crevices and i cant tell what youre tidying up as i cant see the mistakes, theyre not in shot?
This issue was addressed in many other comments. It took me a few videos to get the right camera angle, and learn to keep the shot in frame. The first few in the BA set had a bad angle, but the last 15 or so are good to go. There are 22 in the set. Also, this video is no longer part of the set since Flesh Wash has been discontinued. I replaced this video with one on Baal Red. (to demonstrate the new wash, and replace the crappy production) Hope that helps,.
Uh... you do realize that all paint is toxic if you put it in your mouth lol, you can get cancer from doing that. Just dip it in you water instead of your mouth.
Probably, but this is straight from the GW website. "Citadel Colour paints are non-toxic, water-based acrylic paints specially formulated to cover Citadel miniatures. These properties mean that you don't need any harsh cleaners or thinners for your paints -- water is all you'll need." However, their washes and metalics do not say that. True though, I should wash my brush before I put it in my mouth. :)
OH it does burn. I think they even reference putting paint in your mouth some place in that it won't harm you... but they dont suggest putting the FOundation paints in your mouth because the high pigment count makes them taste terrible... and they are right! Ok kids, Oyufurodai and I officaly suggest you do NOT put paint in your mouth. Put it in your eye instead.
nice... my Flamers and their breath of chaos rule will rape your blood angels and your best friends crappy lil Saim-hann I will screw you all Ne He Ha Ha Ha... okay I'll stop now lol
Being self admittedly cheap you probably wont like this but the only way to get the entire set of videos, and there are 22 in the blood angels set, is to purchase them. I sell them on ebay and from my blog.
i'm curious. as i'm an extreme cheap-ass, when i start painting warhammer, i will just buy the assault on black reach paint set, so won't have any inks, and probably wont bother buying any. can the same inking effect work using something else, like just highlighting?
Lol, I have only been painting myself for a year and have only tried 3 chapters, Ultras, Black Templars and Blood Angels. I plan on trying Crimson Fists, Dark Angels, and Imperial Fists. Any one else have any requests?
Wolves are on my list. I plan on having a marine done for, Ultras, Crimson Fist, Imperial Fist, Dark Angels and Wolves by the time the new codex comes out.
I'd also like to see a Space wolf but preferably in the pre-heresy colour scheme (darker colours- similar to the 13th cursed company of the space wolves chapter), might seem a little obscure but i have an entire Chapter to repaint, (1000 marines) so any help greatfully received.
Well, I do use watered down Chaos Black sometimes. But I like the look of the Flesh Wash better. As far as surface tension, this is a beginner video and I don't think we need to be concerned with that just yet! From what I heard, the new Wash set is phenominal, and I will be trying them as soon as they arrive.
Oh, and just an explanation on surface tension, as I understand it. Surface Tension refers to how evenly the paint flows. A wash with a tough surface tension will more likely pool up on the flat surfaces of the model, rather then flowing into the cracks evenly like a broken wash. This refers to paint too, breaking surface tension on a paint will help it more evenly cover a surface. To break ST, you use Varnish, Thinner or even just water. However, again, I don't feel that is necessary here.
Please, any readers feel free to expand or correct my opinion on Surface Tension. Just remember that the point of the videos are to help beginners and intermediate painters quickly put together a high quality table top model. Thanks for the input Braveheartofglasgow. Keep it coming, a lot of people are reading this and learning and improving!
Tau?!? Tau use the same concept as painting marines, only their armor plates are half the size, soooo, harder to paint. You are right that their color scheme is easier, especialy when you use the Tausept foundation paint, but I suggest all beginner painters start with marines. You can avoid tricky flesh and can practice your skills with nice big armor plates and broad areas to cover..(Opposed to Eldar, Tau, etc.) And yes, Ultramarines are more difficult to paint then Blood Angels. IMO.
No prob man, great questions! When you highlight, you add a slight accent on the edge of the armor, to make it more pronounced. So, you would use your base color, in this case red, and highlight the very edge with a lighter version of it, (red mixed with yellow to make orange). This light edge will stand out more when you look at the model. To keep it simple, ink EVERY recess of the model. In some of the bigger recesses, more ink, less ink in the little tiny cracks. Ink is artifical shadow
I still don't get what highlighting is, after you've painted the sm red and inked it, do you "highlight" a coat of red over the last one or do you only do the highlighting in certain places?
Also with inking do you put it in areas on the model where there would be shadows in real life and only in those places?
i believe that all molding paints are not toxic so you most likely wont die from paint

Paints are way more expensive in the UK at the current exchange rate... at £2 = $4 as opposed to your $3 = £1.50 paints....

I think ultramarines are hardest to paint to a decent standard!
It's difficult to know when to highlight them...
That's why I recommend starting with another chapter or even a simpler race like Tau...
