Sadly Hollywood can't make classic films like this anymore, they make shit for 15 year olds and morons. Get the TD Thief soundtrack cd - its their best album and check out Caan in The Gambler another good film before the crap films started. Thanks for posting.
@nspatchcock Yeah I saw the Keep on a bad dvd copy where everyone was skinny and elongated. He did that Tooth Fairy film too which was good. Thief is just a classic with James Caan at his macho best. I saw a film recently about the Apple iPhone 4S and it had that whole Michael Mann quality - made by some crazy guy. :)
@ButherLi55ett Hi Buther, I have 4 clips from the Gambler up - check my channel, there was little of it on YT, great film but Thief is Caan's best work.
@verve92 really? cos after 8 minutes of this lame music-video i had to drop this film...music was irritating me, and for me does not hide the lack of excitement in the visuals.
Thief is one of the best. Everything about it was / is ingenious, from the story to the casting to the cinematography to that goosebump-inducing music by Tangerine Dream. I cannot understand why this film is not better known. Thanks for posting this!
@myVideoPerscription As i said before..... Drive is extremely good, but in a completely separate way...in fact, it borrows heavily from crime capers like "Thief," so for that alone, it can NEVER be better than "Thief." NEVER, my friend.
@20thcenturyfilmdocs That was the whole about point about Drive is that its a movie that belongs with films like this, The Driver, To Live and Die in L.A. and so on. I'll give you that Thief is better but thats because of the James Caan character. Ryan Gosling's character is more like a myth like Eastwood where Cann's is about a normal man that wants to have a life with a family but pays a price that leads to his downfall. And I think Heat is about as good as Thief lol
Thank you for posting this. It is a great, underrated film. Not quite up to Charley Varrick which of course was directed by Don Siegel of Dirty Harry fame and had the great Walter Matthau as well as John Vernon and even Norman Fell in it. Joe Don Baker was particularly good as the mob goon. I own that film and can watch it at least once a year. I remember first seeing it as a late movie on the network affiliate. I believe my older brother clued me into it and I've loved it ever since.
@6pointnite Tnx I LOVE Charley Varrick, thought about posting it too, but I think someone already beat me to it...so many great crime caper films came out of the 70s and 80s like this and Varrick that are nearly forgotten now. Glad you like the post!
@6pointnite I fancy myself as a "cinephile" of sorts. I have about 4,000 movies. (.avi, DVD, VHS) I love Thief (1981), and also Don Siegel. I am glad you mentioned it because, I can not believe that I've never seen or even heard of Charley Varrick (1973). That being said, I can't say if it's better than Thief (until I watch it/downloading now, hehehe). but judging by the trailer, it looks like a very different type of film. I love 70's/"New Hollywood" films. I'll give my opinion of C.V.'73
@gjc82071 Good man. You ought to enjoy Charley Varrick. Not better, just a different film. Shoot, I could almost go down to the 'man cave' and pop it in right now. I dunno, I'm biased by they don't make 'em like that anymore. Good watching!
This is a great and overlooked film Thanks for posting it.

@JupiterReturnz Yes, the Gambler is another James Caan must

Heat is Mann's best movie...not this.
MovieMaster0001 3 months ago
@MovieMaster0001 Nope, not buyin' it...thought it was weak and overly long, basically the same film, with cop perspective added...

I agree this is a fantastic film and the opening sequence, assisted by the superb score by Tangerine Dream, is nothing short of brilliant!

@siys - Couldn't have said it better! The Thief opening is perfection.
