a lot of people make their own out of Fimo/polymer clay/acrylic but for all the pearls and diamonds and stuff, a craft store is a good bet, for the little hello kitty bits and stuff, like used for Hime Deco of cameras and phones, try Etsy, you can find some lovely stuff

you can wear gloves... or cut the tips of gloves and stickey tape them over the end of your fingers... or just avoid runninf your nails through your hair, just use combs..
