Also you have to remember that after 1453 the English and the French didn't consider the Hundred years war to be over. The English wanted to renew the HYW when they had the money and resources. But in 1455 when the Wars of the roses broke out in England the Yorkists and the Lancastrians were more concerned about fighting eachother rather than France (needless to say England wasnt the united country it had been under Henry V). It wasnt until 1475 when Edward IV secured England that he launched...
It was a clusterfuck from the beggining for the French. The crossbowmen were forced to march because the army were forcing the vanguard forward, then when the crossbowmen began to flee they were trampled by the French cavalry, in turn the rest of the French army heard the screams of the trampled crossbowmen (the French thought it was the English screaming) then they too charged the English position.
It was just an utter massacre because of bad choices and leadership.
Oddest part about it... Phillip was advised to essentially surround and besiege the forces by one of his captains.
The English forces would have been forced to abandon their position and fight a larger army or starve. In fact the Black Prince feared that the French would surround him and his army.
But Phillip goofed up and attacked a stronger position.
@224superdude : Well mate it wasn't the Black Prince army but Edward III. After the Genoese were forced to retreat and were either intentionally rode over or simply got in the way of lencon's division is still up for debate. I tend to believe the first account as the French King and his entourage didn't really understand what the Crossbowmen were facing and without the pavises stood no chance. Save a few battles like Morlaix, they had not come against mass bowmen in prepared defensive positions
@224superdude : Essentially once Alencon committed his troops there was little Philip could do. He was a very cautious man of that there is no doubt. @TheStandofTheLastGuy. True, the English under Henry V were very tough soldiers, and so were the French under Joan, Lahire, Xaintrailles, Richmont, etc...
@horeslayer, true, it was the English, more specifically Henry V who killed the rules chivalry. After winning Agincourt, he executed 1700 French nobles when he could have ransomed them for a good price. He wasn't in any serious condition to justify his decision.
@expertstrategy I love historical fiction from this era. The battles were so epic and all of the horrors of mass slaughters and rapes are interesting to learn about.
@horeslayer, well, history is very interesting to talk about. I consider myself an expert about the Napoleonic Era since I've been studying about it for a long while.
@expertstrategy: There was actually nothing noble about ransoming wealthy lords & knights; it was done merely to get money. The English might have killed off the captured French nobles after Agincourt because they were in no position to hold such a large number of prisoners - the nobles could have risen up and overpowered their captors if the English made a mistake.
@TheStandofTheLastGuy, many of the Burgundian Lords may have recognized Henry V as king of France, but I seriously doubt that the nobles loyal to the Valois would ever recognize him as such.
Henry IV wasn't recognized as king of France, by the time France recaptured all of her lost lands.
The Castillian Civil War was split into two sides and each were supported by England and France. France won, and Castile became a stern ally of France.
The Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War also involved England, and the anglo-Burgundian alliance was severed by the treaty of Arras of 1435, reuniting Burgundy with France against England.
True, England was dominant over France twice, and the French kicked them out twice.
I'm sure the next excuse you're looking for is that the only reason the French won the war was because Henry VI was a child. Perhaps you care to explain why is it that France was already saved during the Caroline War and the English were driven out. Du Guesclin defeated the victors of Poitiers and Crecy.
France wasn't saved because of Henry V's sickness. Joan of Arc inspired the French to keep fighting, and 20 years after her death, talented French generals drove out the English.
@TheStandofTheLastGuy, actually France won the Hundred Years War overall. Not to mention that France won the most wars involved in the Hundred Years War.
Charles VII was recognized as the real king of France upon winning the long conflict.
@zenoist2, true the English had their moments of glory at Poitiers, Crecy, and Agincourt. But the French also had their moments as well, at La Rochelle, Patay, Formigny, and Castillon. the French also introduced the cannon which overturned the tactical longbow advantage of the English.

Incredible job! The night before the battle, it rained cats and dogs. The English also set traps against the cavalry--they dug many holes that broke horses' legs. Crecy was a slaughter.
HangedMan - Crécy was the first battle on the continent where te English used their advantage that many many English peasants were trained bowmen. Ten thousand longbows (and I do believe they had that many) have the effect of a meatmincer. English bowmen ruled the European battlefields for nearly three centuries to come.
The French crossbowmen at Crecy were actually genoese mercenaries, and their failure was mostly due to the fact that they had been denied their pavise shields because of logistical issues, and were severely outranged. If the French had a competent baggage train, they might not have been goaded into such a disadvantageous charge.
There is no evidence to say the Genoese had no pavises. It is not clear whether they shot all their bolts or not. Contrary to common belief, a lot of "longbowmen" at Crecy were arblasters, and many of them came from French land owned by England. Crecy and Agincourt are froth to make the English feel more adequate than they are.
a basic massacre but irl i imagine that the french dismounted knights woulda won but the cavalry where doomed no matter what i liked this i really liked this video
Well, the english set up in a place where it was pattently idiotic to try and attack them anyway.
Wouldn't have mattered if the french had dismounted and advanced on foot, they still would have been slaughtered by the english bows as they struggled up the hill. The terrain was such that turning the english flank was basically impossible without ridding hours and hours out of the way by which time the battle would be over.
The french never should have fought there at all, regardless of numbers
King Philip VI Rejected the possibility of fighting the next day and flank the enemy because he and the majority of his stupid barons wanted to fight now and bring glory to their names with a "devastating charge"...
While that's all entirely true, if the french hadn't fought that day, then the english would have just slipped away in the night. The french didn't have time to march ahead and block the road by which the english would retire, infact, the english position more or less made doing this impossible.
The english, basically, had nothing to lose by resting there and everything to gain if the french were stupid enough to attack, which they were.
@noff27 "Philip VI was a rotten king and a terrible example of the times strategy that excluded flank attacks and disregarded foot soldiers."
Actually, he wasn't that bad a general. His army spent all day arriving and he decided that the best thing to do would be to wait until the next morning. Unfortunately his army was so big that he ended up with medieval traffic jam with the vanguard being forced forward into the gathering dusk without any chance to outflank the English.
You know, to this day, most Englishmen break the law by not practicing the longbow on Sundays! It's a medieval law made by Edward III so he could train thousands of archers for his campaigns, and it has never been repealed!
Don't fool yourselves. France has excellent cannon units and a very good, balanced, all-round army in the late period, including some of the best heavy cavalry in the game. The English clearly have the advantage when it comes to missle troops. BTW, crossbows do NOT have a longer range than longbows. They reload slower and have less range but parcially make up for that by being deadlier than most arrow shots (excepting longbows) as crossbow bolts can pierce most armour.
Well, hands down for stats, the english retinue longbowman is the best missile troop in the game, but for my money, (If you're playing the campaign anyway) the milanese crossbow militia is the best unit. Totally ignoring the fact that they have as much armor as a feudal knight, armor piercing arrows and enough morale and melee attack to stand toe to toe with spear milita... They're cheap to produce, have only a level 3 city barracks requirement... and have no upkeep when in a city. Best unit.
Sabadar militia of the Timurids are vastly superior, in that they are ALWAYS free in upkeep, have higher defense and higher attack in all regards than retinue longbowmen.
Byzantine Guard Archers are superior as well, in that they have higher defense than Sabadars and higher attack, but they cost money. Dismounted Dvor of Russia are also superior to retinue longbowmen, as are mongol infantry.
I enjoy playing as the French, they have cool infantry, and their cavalry are like the best, and i love their missle troops, especially the scots guard, and they are by far the only French longbow men in the game that are coated with full plate armor. And they have the upper advantage against english longbow men who are only armored in leather and chainmail.
Actually. The Scots Guard armour is a disadvantage to them. They fire much, MUCH slower than English Longbowmen. The heavy armor also tires them out quickly compared to the English bowmen. In my opinion, I would rather have light rangers than heavy ones. I mean, who would want their bowmen in a pitched melee battle? Better to fight with a distance...
Correction didn't have last time I checked, does have now. Still, Eastern Asians sadly tend to prefer console gaming above PC gaming. Total War such a great series.
No, they lost agincourt tragicly. The impetuosity of their nobility & eagerness to get to grips with soldiers of "equal standing" meant that not only did they charge into a bottle neck(classic crowd disaster) that was also too muddy for them to safely navigate, but that the unarmoured bowmen were actually at an advantage in hand to hand combat with them. The actual longbows played little part in that battle, contrary to popular belief. Also a bit tragic that they had to execute all the French.
France went into that battle with everyone expecting them to win, outnumbering us and better equiped.
Instead they died ignoble and inglorious deaths. They died in the mud & rain, trampled by their comrades for the most part, & those that did make it to the English lines to put up a fight were either killed there or died on their knees after as so many prisoners were considered a liability.
If that doesn't constitute a tragedy for France, I don't know what does. Glad we won, but come on?
Actually, most of the French executed would've been worth a lot of money. That's why the English knights refused to do it themselves, in the end the job was given to the archers.
A monk passing through was suppose to have said it was very sad, not the frenchman dying, but the amount of gold the english lost by killing them all!
the english were outnumbered. well, since they have longbows they used them to pin down the charging frenchmen.and used bill men pike men and halbilders to protect the archers
I think that France is one of the best factions to play as in m2tw. Because it has good infantry and cavallry. Only that the AI don´t use the frecnh troops on the right way. For instacne chargin headlong into spearmen.
i do agree with that because i was playin as the english on the campaign and i didn't want to run the risk of losing a war against france but i faced them on the battlefield and won everytime once when i was hopelessly outnumbered and to tactically use the woods with a bunch of archers and mercenary crossbows
Yeah. Then, the french don´t get their good troops before High Medieval and that´s why it´s hard playing as them. They suck in the begining but owns in the middle and ending of the game=P.
mind you most of the factions dont get their decent troops until the middle to ending of the game but the french are an awesome faction but probably not as the english :P lol
I've got to be honest: loathe as I am to admit it, I do prefer the French army roster even in the early period. I'd trade billmen for armoured sergeants any day of the week. Aventuriers are brilliant, and the cavalry's also very good, almost as good as HRE or Turks. They also get Sepantines AND basilisks: The best field and siege guns respectively, and can build their admittedly basic Pikemen in either cities OR castles. Retraining them in both is very handy.
Thats based on opinion. I prefer the use of infantry, and france's infantry units suck. I like england much better. english inf vs french cav = dead french
I prefer to use infantry as well, but France is certainly no light-weight in the infantry department.
They have Voulgiers, the best of their type in the game.
Pikemen, need more be said?
DCK are equivalent to Armoured Swordsmen.
Aventurier and Scots Guard are both excellent.
The only advantage England has that comes to mind is that England can lay stakes, otherwise France seems to match or excel England's infantry roster. :/
England has H billmen witch are 3 times stronger than voulgiers, and D english knights and armoured swordsmen are stronger than french foot knights. Why? The game gives them the same power value, but after a series of battles, england's infantry has killled french infantry, in very hard mode and I played as both. England's longbowmen, specially sherwoods, massacre most of the french missile units, and besides, england has both light billmen for cavalry, and heavy for infantry.
France is hated by a LOT of factions in the beginning of the game. HRE, Milan, and Spain despise you. Plus, France has a difficult time raising their Papal votes...
You mentioned campaigns, but the situation in which Longbowmen would have a clear upperhand over the French would be in custom battles where they can be easily be accessed. However, on the campaign map, the French are far more capable of mass producing their missile infantry.
I do not doubt your experience in the game, but the numbers don't lie. I often mod my game, so I look at the raw values and attributes of the units, and nothing would imply that England's clones of French units are better.
And as the guy below me points out, the majority of the crossbowmen were Genoese; s'why the French were rather more unscrupulous about running them over, heh.
@commanderfarsight - The problem with this battle in particular was that the French -weren't- pussies; desperate for valour, the knights simply charged at the English line as soon as they got on the scene, not waiting for the army itself to form up.
They were rather more 'honourable' (read: daft :P), and thought all battles should be waged by pompous gits duelling on horseback.
I'm luxembourgish, and the luxembourgish king john the blind died in this battle because he was a vassal to the french crown and fought his way through the english lines (remember, he was blind ^^) until he died.
it simply is fascinating how realistic you reenacted the battle with the rain which made the mercenary's crossbows useless, the traps and foolish french army which trusted too much in it's cavalry.
And what about the French during that war - in its first period they were totally idiots (don't take it too personally), I mean in tactics. Just look at the history of Crecy or Agincourt.
Admirable cinematography on this one. Simply excellent camera work. I wish you had a full TV series with a supercomputer to produce this for a broader audience with better quality reproduction than You Tube.
what really appealed to me about this video, beside the camera work, is that the creator has recreated exactly how the real battle was fought, including the French attacking in waves and how they charged and killed there own genoesee crossbowmen for withdrawing because there pasvis shields were left behind in the baggage cart due to the hastily French advance, the crossbowmen were outranged by the longbow men, and being merc's and professionals they did the right thing of falling back.
great movie ever!

RiClive 2 years ago
Crossbowmen are horrible. Simply put, their reloading is very, very sluggish compared to the bowmen
AKTHEGREAT1234 2 years ago
but they have a longer range then longbow's ^^
NoIdeaWhatYouMean 2 years ago
But I would rather place fast firing, mass amount of vollies on the enemy than slow ROF, less arrow amount.
AKTHEGREAT1234 2 years ago
exactly ^^ but to bad they didn't use Mughal bow's, which destroyed any European bow
NoIdeaWhatYouMean 2 years ago
I enjoy playing as the French, they have cool infantry, and their cavalry are like the best, and i love their missle troops, especially the scots guard, and they are by far the only French longbow men in the game that are coated with full plate armor. And they have the upper advantage against english longbow men who are only armored in leather and chainmail.
expertstrategy 2 years ago 2
Better to fight with a distance...

why french cavalry attack spearmen?

Cool, this game is played in East Asia. Doesn't have a wiki in Japanese this game.
Breiniak 3 years ago
Correction didn't have last time I checked, does have now. Still, Eastern Asians sadly tend to prefer console gaming above PC gaming. Total War such a great series.
Breiniak 3 years ago
dont arrows pierce armour and dont longbowmen have better rate of fire than crossbow so they just own like they did in rl.

Hmmmm... About another battle: the battle of Agincourt. I´ve allways thought that the French won that battle. Am I right?
warmsteel 3 years ago
bah! lol
SquareHeadSlacker 3 years ago
No, they lost agincourt tragicly. The impetuosity of their nobility & eagerness to get to grips with soldiers of "equal standing" meant that not only did they charge into a bottle neck(classic crowd disaster) that was also too muddy for them to safely navigate, but that the unarmoured bowmen were actually at an advantage in hand to hand combat with them. The actual longbows played little part in that battle, contrary to popular belief. Also a bit tragic that they had to execute all the French.
xylaphonemaster 3 years ago
Tragic is not the word I would use to describe it.
SquareHeadSlacker 3 years ago
France went into that battle with everyone expecting them to win, outnumbering us and better equiped.
Instead they died ignoble and inglorious deaths. They died in the mud & rain, trampled by their comrades for the most part, & those that did make it to the English lines to put up a fight were either killed there or died on their knees after as so many prisoners were considered a liability.
If that doesn't constitute a tragedy for France, I don't know what does. Glad we won, but come on?
xylaphonemaster 3 years ago 2
The only good frenchman is a dead one, well not so much these days, but thats how it was back then, if the didn`t have a ransom or something.
SquareHeadSlacker 3 years ago
Actually, most of the French executed would've been worth a lot of money. That's why the English knights refused to do it themselves, in the end the job was given to the archers.
xylaphonemaster 3 years ago
A monk passing through was suppose to have said it was very sad, not the frenchman dying, but the amount of gold the english lost by killing them all!

I think that France is one of the best factions to play as in m2tw. Because it has good infantry and cavallry. Only that the AI don´t use the frecnh troops on the right way. For instacne chargin headlong into spearmen.
warmsteel 3 years ago
i do agree with that because i was playin as the english on the campaign and i didn't want to run the risk of losing a war against france but i faced them on the battlefield and won everytime once when i was hopelessly outnumbered and to tactically use the woods with a bunch of archers and mercenary crossbows
gangstamillion 3 years ago 2
Yeah. Then, the french don´t get their good troops before High Medieval and that´s why it´s hard playing as them. They suck in the begining but owns in the middle and ending of the game=P.
warmsteel 3 years ago 2
mind you most of the factions dont get their decent troops until the middle to ending of the game but the french are an awesome faction but probably not as the english :P lol
gangstamillion 3 years ago
I've got to be honest: loathe as I am to admit it, I do prefer the French army roster even in the early period. I'd trade billmen for armoured sergeants any day of the week. Aventuriers are brilliant, and the cavalry's also very good, almost as good as HRE or Turks. They also get Sepantines AND basilisks: The best field and siege guns respectively, and can build their admittedly basic Pikemen in either cities OR castles. Retraining them in both is very handy.
xylaphonemaster 3 years ago
Naturally the French have the best roster in the game, as unfortunate and quite realistic it is.
TuzesViz 3 years ago
Thats based on opinion. I prefer the use of infantry, and france's infantry units suck. I like england much better. english inf vs french cav = dead french
ChaloLaMarmota 3 years ago
I prefer to use infantry as well, but France is certainly no light-weight in the infantry department.
They have Voulgiers, the best of their type in the game.
Pikemen, need more be said?
DCK are equivalent to Armoured Swordsmen.
Aventurier and Scots Guard are both excellent.
The only advantage England has that comes to mind is that England can lay stakes, otherwise France seems to match or excel England's infantry roster. :/
TuzesViz 3 years ago
England has H billmen witch are 3 times stronger than voulgiers, and D english knights and armoured swordsmen are stronger than french foot knights. Why? The game gives them the same power value, but after a series of battles, england's infantry has killled french infantry, in very hard mode and I played as both. England's longbowmen, specially sherwoods, massacre most of the french missile units, and besides, england has both light billmen for cavalry, and heavy for infantry.
ChaloLaMarmota 3 years ago
Billmen and Voulgiers cannot be compared because they have different uses; it is like comparing Magyar Cavalry to Hussars units.
1) England lacks Armoured Sergeants - major disadvantage
2) England lacks Pikemen - they make it up in stakes, but stakes are immobile
3) D English Knights and D French Knights are the samething
4) DCK and Armoured Swordsmen are the samething
5) France has a far more accessible roster of missile units - arguably better than England's if you discount stakes and melee
TuzesViz 3 years ago
France is hated by a LOT of factions in the beginning of the game. HRE, Milan, and Spain despise you. Plus, France has a difficult time raising their Papal votes...
AKTHEGREAT1234 2 years ago
You mentioned campaigns, but the situation in which Longbowmen would have a clear upperhand over the French would be in custom battles where they can be easily be accessed. However, on the campaign map, the French are far more capable of mass producing their missile infantry.
I do not doubt your experience in the game, but the numbers don't lie. I often mod my game, so I look at the raw values and attributes of the units, and nothing would imply that England's clones of French units are better.

If the french cavalry does an charge on your armored swrodsman than im sure they are death;)

indeed, the english won the battle of Azincourt also by thanks of the longbow. the longbowmen could shoot 5 to 6 arrows a minute, very fast!

Edward IIIs most famous victory i think, what is most impressive here is that 16,000 Englishmen defeated a French force of over 86,000.
But the English Longbow changed everything in this battle.

And as the guy below me points out, the majority of the crossbowmen were Genoese; s'why the French were rather more unscrupulous about running them over, heh.
Again, great video :)
Invierno86 3 years ago
Fantastically done. :)
Invierno86 3 years ago 2

but im not sure if the historic stuff was right u know cos it wasnt just the french the genoese were on their side too...

what a jolly good movie ;)
I'm luxembourgish, and the luxembourgish king john the blind died in this battle because he was a vassal to the french crown and fought his way through the english lines (remember, he was blind ^^) until he died.
it simply is fascinating how realistic you reenacted the battle with the rain which made the mercenary's crossbows useless, the traps and foolish french army which trusted too much in it's cavalry.
you have my greatest respect ;)

Cadmium77 3 years ago
what really appealed to me about this video, beside the camera work, is that the creator has recreated exactly how the real battle was fought, including the French attacking in waves and how they charged and killed there own genoesee crossbowmen for withdrawing because there pasvis shields were left behind in the baggage cart due to the hastily French advance, the crossbowmen were outranged by the longbow men, and being merc's and professionals they did the right thing of falling back.
