I whistled this at work the other day, and the sound engineer i was working with used to work with them, what a great conversation next 4 days, amazing
What a loss to the world. This song takes me right back to realising how much I loved music. This guy is amazing. One day there will be a party Billy, and when we all are up there with you, all of us 80's fans - and you are going to do a gig for us! Sleep well sunshine, thanks for making me happy when I was in my teens.
@djquirke1 Not that The Associates were without a drugs past, as Alan Rankine forever reminds us. It's probably one of the least interesting things about the group, though.
God the 80s were good, there were a million and one groups around like The Associates, all good at what they did... such a pity the modern charts are full of hippty hop someone versus someone rubbish... they could all learn from this sort of stuff.
@iansmithphotos My point of view has always been that the UK singles chart back then was much more of a free-for-all; groups as inventive as this could be considered mainstream. There's no chance of that happening now.
l first heard the Divine Comedy version and thought it was one of the better songs on "Victory for the Comic Muse". I'm glad to finally hear the excellent original.
Een zwaar ondergewaardeerde band vind ik. We hebben pas geleden een korte biografie over the associates gemaakt (zie onze afspeellijst op onze youtube pagina). Ze hebben veel meer leuke nummers gemaakt.
@theloya1965 Please explain in what way it is weak instead of just stating it. Billy broke ground not just in singing this way but in the lyrics as well.
For 3 hours I've been trying to think who sang this, kept thinking 'The Mighty Wah'. Sang it down the phone to a mate and she rang back with the answer! Thanks.....
I saw H17 in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago and Glenn did a very emotional cover of this ..... it was a great gig and this was one of the highlights and everyone I spoke to afterwards still has this as one of their tracks of the 80's and proably of all time ....
Everyone and I mean EVERYONE ! of these lovely comments concerning this song touch me very deeply. This song has a place in our hearts and always will till the day we die, you and I and us know the real truth, and that truth is love...A love supreme...G...
@nikbunnymen This is a great track. However, I have to disagree with you. I have just been listening to "Bon Voyage" by Sparks and there is a very obvious influence in his vocal style and the music to that band.
My only claim tto fame i knew Alan Rankine breifly, he use to go out with a girl at my school in the seventies, when he was on Top of rhe pops we all crowded round the telly to watch this Great band
I'm 16 years old and have been a fan of The Associates for at least 8 years (Mum used to play them in the car and I began to clamour for her to buy more albums :} )
I can never find the words to express how much I love this band. All I can say there will never be anything that can rival their greatness in my eyes.
@ashie259 Yes that's Michael Dempsey, who contributed greatly to the peerless Sulk LP, which this is a single from. Have a listen also to Skipping, It's better this way and Bap de la bap from Sulk. I recall hearing somewhere, don't know if it's true, that he was "allowed to leave" because Billy wanted someone who could play slap! I guess I"ll always wonder what might have been, if this Associates line up had made another LP.
when i get up there in about 40yrs time im gunna bug you billy boy to sing this for me .......what memories the roxy sheffield 1982...cheers billy sleep well x.
@cocacolaveins The Glamour Chase by Tom Doyle is an excellent book on Billy McKenzie.Tom Doyle was Billy's friend but it is very honest and well recommended.
I am pleased to read that 5eurocups2005 likes some of the songs on the 2 disc singles album.Breakfast is also one of my favourites but i have to say that Baby from the Outernational album is the one i love the most.I do hope 5eurocups2005 that you will take some time in hearing some others songs that they did over the years and if you found breakfast a bit haunting then you should listen to a song called No from the Sulk album another favourite of mine.
i cant believethis type of singing.I used to buy brot music without ever hearing it I loved the cover for 18carat love aff so i bought it.I loved their arrangemants but i thought the voice was too overtt. Im so sorry he's dead. This group's biggest het was this song .I list 4 times and it hasn't completely got me.the lyrics are interesting and clever. bittersweet. I see this groups couldn't be on AMERICAN radio like aLtered imagesother light pop groups.
The only reason i took an interest in the associates recently is because of this song i had on an uncut mixed cd with various 80's bands on it. And straight away i was interested in the band, i've just bought there 2 disc singles album for £16.00 they other day and i more or less love every song, Country Club is my personal Fave, love hangover is another great song along with 18 carat love affair , Breakfast is a great song its a very haunting song. I am totally fascinated by billy and his work
Lovely stuff. I always thought Mr Mac had the same mischievous stage presence as the great Alex Harvey. A damn shame that neither of them are still around
one on his own - truly a one off & a breath of fresh air in the 80's - loved the chap for taking his whippets on tour with him. music still stands out & up.
This tune was playing on the radio when my da announced at the breakfast table that he had been sacked from his job at the de lorean factory. Still it was a great fuckin song.
met billy through my friend mick mcfarlane in dundee around 1982 small guy but good crack he also had a great boutique in dundee mall bought alot of good gear there
Just in case anyone looking at this didn't know, Billy MacKenzie suffered from depression and committed suicide in early 1997. A quick internet search should provide further facts.
@petercouz That's right. He was wearing the Leyton Orient away strip at the time. I'm sorry, i know I shouldn't laugh but can't help myself. I can imagine Billy peshing himself with laughter. Anyway, I need to cheer myself up after the beautiful despair I feel after listening to Kites.
billy was a brilliant singer, but even better was the actual words,"i'll have a shower, then phone my brother up,within the hour,i'll smash another cup"!!!!!!!!!!!

FANTASTIC.............Do not forget the wonderful Alan Rankine who was Billy's other main band member. That music you hear is just as good as the voice...Memories!!
Thanks a lot for posting this. This was a shamefully unestimed band, and there are too few records of that fantastic programme "generation 80". All my youth... :o)
It's only when I saw some clips of The Cure and Zane Griff elsewhere on YouTube that I realised that this clip is from the same programme. The Dutch "Gotterdammerung 2000" sounds a good one too.
Pour moi aussi, toute ma jeunesse et c'est comme si c'était hier...Pas évident de retrouver tous ces groupes passés dans Génération 80. Ahhhh Madame Fabienne !
why when the music of the eighties is talked about the associates never get mentioned they were so amazing and billys voice such a waste my fav band ....
Thanks for posting. I heard this, as a kid, in the '80s. Then I lived in London, a man in 1991. There was nothing in the music press guiding me, just the memory of that sound. Tower Records, Piccadilly, on the Walkman - throug cold London streets, with the headphones. "Party Fears", what a day that was. Unforgettable. Live on, whippets.
yes yes yes, fantastico, but pity he left us so early, but as elvis sang, you have to walk in another man's moccasins before you judge him. I'm sure Billy is on the perfect pop song spirit trail with all the other legends.
God--this was/is a brilliant song.I hope you found your peace Billy. This is one of the songs that I crank up the volume when it is on the radio..amazing
This song will remain youthful in the year 2099.

It's only when I saw some clips of The Cure and Zane Griff elsewhere on YouTube that I realised that this clip is from the same programme. The Dutch "Gotterdammerung 2000" sounds a good one too.

One of the great's from the 80's
They stood out from the rest, like the Smiths did.

How can this possibly sound better to me now than it did in the 80s.
Of all the, "REAL" 80s bands the Associates must be by far the least appreciated.
I could never understand that then and even more so now.

Fantastically Haunting. The keyboard's just so classic early 80's and yet it still sounds perfect - even today!
William, it was really nothing.

Classic song. Who's the female keyboardist? I didn't know they had a female member!

It's Martha Ladley, one of the two Marthas in Martha and the Muffins, although not the singer.
I'm surprised - I thought Martha's involvement with The Associates was well known enough.

yes yes yes, fantastico, but pity he left us so early, but as elvis sang, you have to walk in another man's moccasins before you judge him. I'm sure Billy is on the perfect pop song spirit trail with all the other legends.
