  • The mac is a cold mistresses and she will freeeezz you! Haha go fort mac!

  • I see a problem here.... Those damn ducks are getting clogged in the pipelines.

  • BOYCOTT fuckn CANADA and everything coming from there

  • throw ALL the fuckn MANAGERS of the big Oil Companies in these Lakes and let them do a 100 Meter Freestyle swimming competition....if they made the 100m back and again....

  • Fuck you, Canada!

  • yes but does anyone eat ducks. Syncrude provides more to the community then any duck ever has. Syncrude provides good paying jobs and better quality of life, where families can grow, people can retire knowing that they will be taken care of and much more. Come to B.C home of all the ducks in the world and lowest paying jobs, highest poverty rates in all of canada BUT the ducks are OK

  • @mannynunes better quality of life? if a better quality of life for you includes; risking that very life driving back and forth on hell's highway (63), where people drive upwards of 140 km/hour drunk or high, work dangerous equipment with people just as drunk or high, homeless people wandering by the hundreds, 0.17 family physicians per 1000 of population, impossible waits in the ER, people living in sheds or their trucks due to ridiculously high rates for rent, . . .

  • . . .or people and animals down stream suffering the tragedies of leaked toxins and carcinogens then I think you are a complete lunatic!

  • @mannynunes Oh yeah? Wait till the boom goes bust. See how well taken care of everybody is.

  • JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP "STOP THE OIL INDUSTRY "

IT'S TIME PEOPLE OF THE WORLD DEMAND A POSITIVE CHANGE TO NEW ENERGIES THAT WILL KEEP THE PLANET CLEAN!!!

  • @Masterfilm15 whats your car run on air?

  • @hawker800FO well think about do anybody have a choice to run a different fuel ???

just because were forced to use oil threw affordability dose not mean what I'm saying is void,,,

answer me this is there a solution to not burn oil??? do we really have a choice?

or are we made to feel we have a choice but forced threw the money where and what we can buy?

  • @Masterfilm15 so stop bitching you enviromental nut job, and yes there is ive seen solar powered cars the chevy volt runs on electricity, ive seen cars that run on hydrogen and bio diesel (deep fryer grease) so yes there is an alternative your just one of those people who want to bitch and wont do anything about it so stop crying

  • @hawker800FO there you go .. so my question why can't we be using these new forms of energies on a main stream way? again lets chill out .. no need to be rude are mad to make a point .. cheers!

  • @Masterfilm15 because it will raise your fuel price and you'll cry about that, and you do have a choice your just to big of a pussy to change

  • you think the oil compamies give a shit? youre dreaming, they will never take action because it costs too much to extract this kind of oil and that would hurt their profits

  • Unbelievable how many brainless hillbillies don't care about the effect humans are having on the environment. It's only a handful of ducks, right? Cows, pigs and chickens will soon be the only living creatures on the planet other than humans because idiots think if you can't eat em, there's no reason to let em live. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the planet needs biodiversity, but most of the posters on this page probably don't know the meaning of that word. Look it up.

  • Accidents happen...

  • Hundreds if not thousands of birds are hit by cars and trucks EVERY DAY!! Why not complain about cars? And how about HUMAN BEINGS DIE in the oilfield. Why are a few ducks more important than a human? Anyone who is against the "Oil Sands" is an out of touch minority.

  • Lol incase you haven't already heard just a few days ago some ducks landed in one of the ponds haha and now it's exploding all over again. I find it funny as shit because Syncrude is like "Yep we'ere responsible, here's 3 million bucks now can we all go back to work?" lol Syncrude doesn't care and a couple of million is just a penny in their bank. When will you fuckers realize nothing is going to happen at Syncrude to prevent this from happening again. Nobody cares, it's a handfull of ducks!

  • Boo Hoo just a few fucking ducks, I work there...and everyone makes fun of how Syncrude acted like they gave a shit lol cause they didn't and niether does anybody else. We work, get paid, go home, end of story. Nobody cares.

  • @Rushworshiper92 "nobody cares"...you could.

  • @L0A0B But I don't cause if they don't die in the oil sands the will just die some other way. ie road kill.

  • @Rushworshiper92. Deep down, do you really think that answer feels right? Truly? Yes there’s numerous ways a living thing can die. An accident is an uncontrollable event that can have tragic consequences like death. But usually, in an accident, you do not know the outcome. In this case, people who work know the dire consequences of their acts and continue on. Closing their eyes and ethical conscience. And then invent feel good answers like the "road kill one to make it more acceptable for them

  • Lets try to grasp the concept of power. People want power, some more then others. Power comes with money. The biggest money generating industry in the wolrd= energy/Oil. By luck, there is a lot in Alberta. Who has the most power in canada = the governement and private oil industries. Who wants to be more powerfull= them. At the cost of others. Albertas entire social structure is corrupt by the money comming from oil. People have money = comfort = indiference= dont want tosee the big picture.

  • how many people have died in americas quest for oil?

  • Ducks do not have the ability to differentiate between clean pond and dirty ponds. The oil sands have been in operation for over 25 years and NOW you make issue of 1500 birds. Birds are killed by preditors, airplane engines, flying into windows, oh and by hunters. Don't just pick on one entity, put them all in the mix and be FAIR.

  • What a bunch of BS , you going shut down wind terbines next? they kill 100s of thousands of birds a YEAR . America does not want safe oil? , Fine get it from Venezuela , i know drill deeper in the GULF LOL , Just get on with a pipe line to the coast china wants it , CUT off America , NO OIL FROM CANADA TO USA

Watch them scream when gas hits 10 bucks a gallon

  • What is going to happen wit the tailings ponds? Why is it not processed? How come it's as big as it is? Is it getting larger? if not, why not? If it's not expanding, is it leaking? Where that crap, unprocessed, going? Who's being poisoned?

  • Ducks don't pay the bills. Oil money does..

  • i hate green peace

  • I will fight that "Gaudet" in his toxic pond until he drinks from it! Call me up! And they wonder why i respect the animals more than my kind....

    Johnny Cool, Montreal, canada

  • Way to go tar sands!! Congrats on destroying helpless birds! Money money money is all that matters. Just imagine what animals would do to us if they had the upper had.

  • And what just happened in the Gulf of Mexico is any better, any cleaner. Yes oil is dirty and if you do not want to be part of it stop buying gas. if you do buy fuel you have absolutely no moral right to criticize where it came from.

Yes it is very sad about the birds, something needs to be done to prevent this unnecessary carnage.

  • Destroying nature in the name of profits..Watch.."Water Car Inventor Killed...Full Story"..the rich get richer and the slaves get deeper in debt!!! Love, Peace and Blessings

  • dumbass fucking ducks they had it coming

  • OMG I didn't believe that you could actually see the toxic tailing ponds of Alberta from space... then I Google Earthed it... hollllllyyyyy crap. And to think that all used to be drinking water from a finitive source. We are all idiots and deserve whatever grave we are digging for ourselves.

  • Syncrude says they are not a malicious company. Okay, very stupid perhaps. But their name says it all. This company is both "synful" and crude.

  • negligence!

  • 1,600. these guys should get the maximum 500, 000 fine. this is irresponsible and criminal. they are directly responsible for killing 1,600 ducks. why don't the owners of Syncrude bathe in their instead? Jackasses!

  • Humans own the earth and ducks will just have to learn where they can land or die. Stupid ducks...and who cares about wildlife anyway? Ducks will eventually evolve to be oil resistant if we just give them enough time too. Syncrude is doing the world a favour by providing oil and we need that more than wildlife.

  • @ohgross1 Whaaaaaaaaat ? Are you being like super sarcastic ? Do you work at ¨The Onion¨ ? Are you for real?

  • nothing gets past you. Of course the real benefit to society is that we can now have self cooking ducks, just light them up and wait 45 minutes or perhaps we can have ducks on a stick to light as torches in the garden at night.

  • If you drive a non-electric car, use a disel powered bus system, buy food grown more than 2 km away from the place you bought it, or buy anything packaged in plastic (what isn't), shut up about our oil industry. Your demand drives it. If you wish to do something about it, cut your hydrocarbon consumption. Until then, SHUT UP YOU HYPOCRITES.

  • NoEoAoRo: Demands are not driven by the consumers. This view is from the 17th century.

You might do some research on the matter and you will find out WHO is creating demands. Sure not the ones who are paying for products, but the ones who are gaining profits from them.

  • So the fact that the predominant transportation technology revolves around gasoline engines has nothing to do with the fact that people demand oil. It's the wicked WHO that's forcing us to use oil. Man, that definitely makes sense!

  • Wait, you must be a troll!

  • Comment removed

  • lol greenpeace whines about this, of course. Its fricken 500 ducks. Big whoop. maybe if it was actually making a serious dent in the population then somebody would give a shit. The oil sands are a good way of weeding out the stupid ducks, so natural selection can take its course. Ahhh, nature.

  • You are pretty fucking dumb man

  • charbroiledmonk1033: The ducks is just the beginning. Next one is you and your family. This is what greenpeace is worried about. But this view is probably too much for your brain capacity.

  • @WolYou oh yes ecause me and my family are tooo stupid to not avoid swimming in the public cesspool. yes of course the ignorant will flock to this natural water source. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!

  • OK Jason just how did you get that 74 foot chip on your shoulder?

  • besides It was the CANADIAN GOVERNMENT that started this world crisis by being so fucking greedy for oil money ! TRUTH HURTS HEY CANADA ???

  • ok buddy.. you obviously are uneducated on the issue and are just saying things you know nothing about.. oh and there are many factors which lead to the world economic crisis.. it was more of a perfect storm.. the biggest factor leading to the downturn was the collapse housing market the united states.. if you think canada's economy is anywhere big enough to effect the globe on such a level as this, you must be smoking some of the peyote.. get a clue and stop be ignorant

  • the oil in canada might be the driving force for the canadian economy but it is no where near big enough to even make a blip on the radar of the world economy.. we have roughly 32 million people in canada compared to 6 billion in the world.. you actually believe our economy would effect such a vast population? get real... now the american economy/dollar which ios the international trading currency.. if that is effected.. that would definitely hurt the world..

  • You have no clue

  • and stop acting as if i have no concern for the environment.. i am very concerned about the environment and i can understand your frustration.. at the rate this is going this will lead to environmental destruction of catastrophic propotions.. what is going on is wrong.. but change is going to happen.. it has to and they are just starting to realize it.. but its not as if it can happen with the snap of a finger.. it takes time.. it took a long to time to get in this mess in the first place

  • i was on site the day this all took place and i will have everyone know that syncrude did everything in their power to rescue those birds that day.. set up a quarintine on site with a full team of environmentalist and volunteers doing everything they can to clean these birds.. i applaud their rescue efforts.. sure it shouldnt have happened in the first place but it did.. they fuct up.. and have learned from their mistakes.. its time to let it go and move on.. we cannot change the past

  • ya but the lies ? I mean 1600 ducks last year ! and the spilling of raw swer in to athabasca ? and no one even knew about that one hey ? so where does it stop? you tell me !

  • oh let me guess.. you have never lied before knowing that you would get in trouble for telling the truth.. i highly doubt that so please dont be a hypocrite.. and also alot more birds die annually from skyscrapers and planes but you dont see people attacking the makers of those now do you? and as for the sewer wastage, that was at suncor not syncrude.. i am not saying that this type of behaviour is acceptable but stuff happens and we can only hope that people learn from it..

  • hey man ! I live in ft chipewyan so don't feed me that crap ! I know exactly whats going on ! syncrude , suncor , what the difference ? there both owned by the canadian government ! don't try to lie to me buddy ! so just stop and think before you try to pick up for thoses greedy government basterds ! ok ......

  • # 1..im not picking up for them..i am stating facts..there is no excuse for this.. #2 they are not "owned" by the canadian government.. they are owned by the people that hold hold shares in the company in question.. they are owned by average canadians as well as upper class canadians.. they government definitely benefits from the plants but dont own them.. if anyone needs to stop and think its you.. you do not know exactly what is happening and niether do i. all we know is things have to change

  • just stop lying ! stop the lies because thats bull shit and you know it ! don't down play there retardness when we all know its bullshit ! so just stop the shit man ! I'm not falling for this crap ! call a ace an ace insted of a ace a joker when we can all see the dame ace . understand ?

  • you responses are uninformed and ignorant.. how can you accuse anybody of lying when you obviously havent done your homework on the issue and you are just saying what ever your jaded hate filled mind can think of.. read a fuckin book.. browse the internet.. learn facts then.. study the issue.. then maybe you might have something more intelligent to say

  • On March 31, 2009, Syncrude Canada Ltd. announced that there were actually more than 1500 duck that had died in the tailing ponds!

  • admitted to 1600 ! but , you know ! more lies of course..

  • there is alot of bad behaviour over the years that has lead to the huge problems that are going on and you cant expect it to change over night. things like this take time. there is a balance and it will be a while before we find it.. its not like we can just shut these plants down and think everything will be ok.. at the strongest times in the economy that would be catastrophic to this country.. the government is funding initiatives to improve the situation and we have to play the waiting game..

  • you dickhead activists, people are more important than animals, normal people look after people first and secondly we have dominion over animals . If you go through life thinking emotionally you are doomed to be unhappy the rest of your life. Grow up! and get a job!

  • And your a sheep for the cancer causing oil industry. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

  • I notice most of the comments here are "anti-duck". Skyscrapers and windmills killing birds and bats are decent arguments, _but_ the bottom line here is toxicity.

Polluting the water table is about as sane and evolved as using your bedroom as a septic field.

Our world is becoming increasingly toxic. Cancer rates continue to rise. If we keep at it it will not be long before Earth is too toxic for humans to live in the open environment.

You might care, if you hadn't decided to have no kids.

  • um the toxic oil was there before the tailing's pond, the only thing different is that in their natural state they where at a much higher concentration. Your argument is flawed and full of holes. Do you not think that before the oil sand companies got there that there was no oil or are you just to stupid to realise that the water table was polluted there way before humans stepped foot on this continent. I say thank "you syncrude for cleaning up the world largest oil spill!!"

  • in the natural state the tar is buried underneath fertile oil and covered with vegetation. If you remove 30 cm of a forest/jungles surface you end up with a saharan type desert. This is why for example, cultivating corn in the amazons is productive only a couple of times, were the organic material is even tinnier. Either you are dumb or you are paid by the industry...either way you are dumb

  • the tailing ponds they engineered are actually seeping into the Athabascan river/water table at a much higher rate then what had occurred naturally. They were too rushed to actually think their designs through.

AND there has been an increase in rare-disorders among communities down stream from the oil sands. Its not only the flora and fauna being affected

  • Yes, and that is why the tailings are contained in a pond, not floating down a river or in the ground water. SO what is your point about the water table? Whatever it is, it is irrelevant.

  • I'm so sick of the media exploding this story its 500 fucking ducks. why make a big deal about it. over the summer 900 bats were found dead buy a wind farm because the turbine pressure explodes there lungs this was on the news once. get over the loss . This is a wast of time lets show how bad the wind farms are.

  • cumminsforlife: So you'd rather swim in a "tailings pond" than stroll under wind turbines?

These toxins will leach into the water table, poisoning plants, animals, and humans for probably thousands of years.

That's presuming the unlikely possibility that Earth will still have breathable air and drinkable water 50 years from now.

Course, you don't care if your grandkids can't walk outside without a gasmask, do you? I bet you chose not to have kids cause of money and hassle.

  • Look this is over played on the news becuse it can mak a oil compnaie look realy bad realy fast and i know there is cannons to go off to warn the ducks and a machine did malfuncion how ever what do you propse they do with the was lagoons the oil sands companies have. and im a guy that does not need much to live i am a very simpel guy.

  • and so what?. It will make rich the investors and give them money to own ranches and produce their own organic food in secluded environment while the stupid taxpayer bails out industries and is left without health and unemployment benefits....(i am being sarcastic and on your side)

  • Your right. You would be shocked to know how many oil executives live in BC away from the destruction of their careers. Most of them have summer homes in the Okanagan, Vancouver and in Victoria which are safeguarded from these industries. So once Alberta is left a desert, with cancer and low life expectancy, they will be enjoying the "fruits of their labour" outside Alberta.

  • buy? Do you even know how bad some oil spills are and the damage they have caused?

  • @cumminsforlife ducks are ducks take care of your earth.

  • I telling you all ! next spring , if this happens then I am going to go there with flares , and I will burn that pond ! got that "syncrude and suncor" !.........

  • Are you going to burn down all sky scrapers? They kill WAY more birds every day you fucking hippie retard!

  • lol ! do you think I would do such a thing ?

  • We (Council of Canadians)are now calling the tailing 'ponds' what they really are -'toxic reservoirs'. The corporate description tailing 'ponds' imply that these man made reservoirs are small in scale & naturally formed. Nothing is further than the truth. They are toxic reservoirs within the most destructive project on Earth.

  • Do you know what the oil sands are? They are naturally formed oil deposits. So by your logic weren't they naturally formed "toxic reservoirs"

If i give you in one hand oil soaked sand and the other sand with a little oil in it what is more toxic?

    RETARD

  • Double Standards!!!

What about the thousands of birds that die yearly around windmill farms?

Where are the bleading hearts for that yearly/daily animal massacre?

  • I think if a compairison was made for birds killed per Joule of energy The oil sands would prove to be the environmental solution

  • Hail Oil.

  • wholey crap!! good luck heating your home in the winter time. there are still lots of people who use heating oil to heat their homes. natural gas & electricity also require fossil fuels morons....duh. so cry about the poor ducks, thats fine, but without heat we can't live here...plain and simple. alternatives...nuclear energy...fuck, don't want to here those cries, wood....uh oh..deforestation....find an affordable alternative!! thats what i thought...alberta is where it's at.

  • Alberta is all about greed. People there are so money hungry for oil money/stocks, that they are overlooking their health and our environment. Everyone is a corporate zombie, too scared to bite the hands that feeds them. How much sulfur is leaking from wells, how many lakes have been destroyed, how is the environment and our health impacted by this lust for the barrel? You cannot trust the crown/alberta regulators as they are so dirty and bought. It's really sad, sad for our children.

  • I bite the fucking hand......I live very close to these plants but I don't work there so I bit the hand ! well I take more then a hand ! I bite off the whole fucking arm....

I really don't give a fuck about this alberta government because there racsist, greedy liers.

  • racsist? how does race have anything to do with this?

  • I am sick of just sitting here ! I should just go throw a match!

  • So "who" going to pick up for this pile of s**t---> SCHLMACH......

  • How much is enough ? YOUR FIRED SCHLMACH !!!

you lying piece of s**t , with your "QUALITY OF LIFE"..........

  • And now theres dead fish !

  • And yet, no one mentions how in 30 years of operation, this is the first major incident with a dynamic impact to the environment. Instead that scrutinize and nit pick about it. I could bring up the innumerable amount of avian creatures that die due to flying into windows in large cities or are shot by hunters (Yes, they may use the bird, but its no different than extracting these animals any other way from the ecosystem)

  • Not the first incident by a long shot, just one where they got caught at on film.

  • @NormanMcGregor name the other ones??? what else happened? they have blown that story waaaaaay outta proportion. buddy is right what about the PEOPLE that died in the oilsands?? those 5 japanese fellas that got squished by a tank collapsing? that was bad. i feel bad for the guy who got decapitated last year by a h-vac truck tank door and his mother watched it happen. THOSE are trageties, the ducks were an accident. how many birds get killed in citys everyday? or windfarms?? fool

  • hours how about days!

  • unbelievable, something needs to be done about this. is all this really worth it?

  • Well theres oil in those ponds ! oil burns, ducks won't land .... simple......

  • so you're saying they should ignite the ponds? that makes sense. I'm for it. don't know about the ceo and stuff but I'll put in a good word.

  • would bad weather stop the flow of oil ???

These people just don't give a flying shit about the environment or the people !!!

You almost sound like your speaking for this

oil company. yes put in a good word for me !

tell him to explian it to the people of ft mc kay and the people of ft chip, why bad weather won't stop oil but it would stop them from putting those canons in.......

  • bad weather did stop the production of oil. if you were on site at the time of the -61 temps, or the snowfall that noone was expecting you'd understand that the plant was at a stand still. try to keep up with the times. is this still a debate about the ducks? this is getting old. do you have a day life you should be thinking about?

  • If you can't even drive the roads, how can you locate 50lb propane bottles in groups of two along with 15lb cannons in areas of the dyke that you wouldn't have even been able to walk to due to the excessive snow?

  • Making EXCUSES for them? theres a road to that tailing pond ! I worked at ARORA and that bull. I worked at ALL those plants.......

  • there is a road around that tailings pond but with that snowfall you couldn't even get up the ramps to the top of the dyke. try going there in the wintertime. you might have worked at AURORA but you obviously haven't been there during heavy snowfalls. those cannons are placed on the beach where there aren't any roads. if a person fell in the pond it wouldn't be a big deal to everyone, it would be looked at as a stupid act. yet when pea brain ducks land in there its all Syncrude's fault?

  • Why were the cannons not set up before the snowfall is the real question. Bad weather is no excuse for negligence.

  • Why would you set up cannons to deterr migratory birds if they are all migrating during the winter. The cannons would be unless buried under snow. unless penguins decided to venture into the bitumen and then you might as well set up a seal hunt there as well.

  • buried under the snow ! You know this "ARORA"

has equipment they can use to remove this "snow".....thats why every one thinks this is bull shit what they did "because of snow".... Quit making excuses for them and just put it right on them and remind them once in a while so they will never forget....

they made it bad for them selves in a already bad situation...every single planet around that river is playing a part in destorying the environent and who ever stands in its way.

    Right or Wrong???

  • Other departments have equipment and man power to remove the snow. Tailings only has about 6-8 people per shift to cover the whole dyke. The do not have a grader or trucks they can load to haul snow to some magical place. I don't know what you mean by every planet around that river, are we talking about earth or some other place? what river? this is a tailings holding pond.

  • Are you saying that Syncrude waits for the birds to actually land on the ponds before they set up the cannons?

  • Syncrude waits till after the last snowfall to setup those cannons and due to some contractual difficulties that I don't know the details to, the people who sets these cannons up were late in doing so. Do you shovel the snow from your driveway before it snows?

  • Responsible individuals, companies, municipalities and cities keep the snow clear on walks and road during the snow storms. Syncrude surely kept access open to their facilities so employees could work.

Syncrude is negligent in not performing to their obligations. Natural resources are not just the oil but also the environment is also important to us all.

The Tar Sands are a valuable resource, no question! But Syncrude need to process and use this resource in a safe and clean manner.

  • As has been brought out in other newscasts about this, this stuff is like the consistency of yougurt and once the birds get totally saturated, they sink. Do we REALLY know how many birds died there? And up till now, the public as a whole really had no clue just what how big these "ponds" are....20 kilometers??? How can anyone really keep birds off something that size, that "looks" like a body of water but is sure death for any waterfowl that lands on it. How long before extinction?

  • the so called "sonic cannons" are metal pipes the are manufactered to connect to a propane tank and a 6 volt battery in which timed intervals release shots that sound like gun shots to which the birds do not perfer. there are people who are trained to install these cannons and the syncrude management had contacted them to set up the cannons. the excessive snowfall kinda postponed it.

  • sick fucks

  • More people need to wake up

  • Just as this title sugests it is funny how the media right away takes this environmental issue and makes it into this tragic story about birds dying. the real tragedy is that of what syncrude is doing to our planet.

here they show syncrude representatives looking for excuses as they try to explain why 500 ducks died. when the real question is why the fuck are we polluting alberta with toxic lakes?

  • premier Ed Stelmach coments about certain rules and regulations and he pretends to be concerned,

while Alberta Enviromental Minister Rob Renner

suggested that syncrude could face a $1 million doallar fine.

Is Rob Renner a fuckin idiot $1 million dollars is pocket change to these swine. its like paying a traffic ticket. remember $1 million dollars is not a lot of money these days
