the reason the vocal is not "cool" is because he is trying to copy what was a pretty lengthy process in those days of getting the "megaphone" sound, you can even tell by the way he is cupping the mic to try and "can" it.

The great thing about about amateur covers like this one (obviously done out of great respect and admiration for the original) is that they show you how remarkably difficult achieving the level of production quality of the original actually was. Actually, he sang through a tin can and the studio engineer (Mike Stone) placed a small mic inside the can...I suppose it's an effect but not one done digitally like it could have been done nowadays
