This is more adorable than I remembered. Lots of comments were about the death scene. I don't remember the end of the series as I was very young when it was shown but in the book by Rumer Godden, Marchpane tries to kill little Apple by getting him to lean over the lit candle on his birthday cake but Birdie steps in and is burned to death instead. It's such a bittersweet story and I love all the characters... even ' haughty Marchpane ' : )
the death scene is all I remember about it...it scarred me for years!! Did they show a charred dead Birdie???? Maybe I created a false memory of it but I'm sure it was quite graphic. Reeeeeeeeeally hated that bitch Marchpane! Poor little Apple bless him.
oh thanks so much for this ,i saw a small clip on the tv on the documentary on oliver,it was a fantastic programme about all his programmes,i remembered march pane she was a horror but beautiful and rather conceited,, does any one know the quote from the book about dolls dont choose they get chosen or something , was madeline the rag doll one of the voices
Thanks for this, this series had haunted my subconscious for years, I didn't remember what it was called until seeing the postgate prog on BBC4 the other night. I will certainly consider the DVD.
I am feeling the same as everyone else - I remember this so well from when I was little and I'm 35 - I remember Marchpane - she killed Birdy didn't she? She was a beautiful porcelain doll? Thank you so much for posting this!!! x
I didnt even know what it was called - I looked on the Internet and found out it's name and that it was a book and a BBC childrens Programme - I am 31 and I still remember Marchpane locking herself in her room and causing havoc! I hope they release it on DVD!
Thanks for putting this up. Birdie's sad demise creeps me out even now at 28! I had a feeling that the BBC wouldn't allow this to be rebroadcast or released as a DVD because of the complaints they recieved at the time of the first showing.
The Dragons Friendly Society tin association with Oliver's son Dan Postgate are negotiating the DVD rights for Tottie - the first series was produced by Goldcrest Films, which we have a marvelous copy of with which to knit DVDs, the second series however we have so far only managed to track down on VHS... if anyone knows where it might be languishing on 16mm can you let me know? Hopefully we will have something ready for December
Thanks for this and Pinny's House, these were excellent Smallfilms shows, and as I recall Emily was also in Tottie. It's a shame they're not yet on DVD.
im so glad this is here, nobody believed this existed. im so annoyed i lost the vid i had of it. although birdie's unfortunate departure did really freak me out. thank you for this
fantastic!!!!! nobody i have talked to remebers this!! i LOVED it as a child... and Apple melting has stayed with me all these years, id love to get the series on DVD. anyone know if its available or where to even look?? big thanks for uploading this, its FAB xxx
Thank you soooo sooo much for uploading this! I, like many others was starting to think I had imagined watching this as child as no one else could ever remember it! I'd love to see the whole thing again, absolutely loved watching it as a child even though it was a pretty horrific story for kids
Thankyou so much for uploading this clip. I really did think I had imagined watching this programme because no one else seemed to remember it when I described it!
I have searched for this show for years but every time you put the title 'tottie' in on the internet you just get a load of porn back, Thanks for this clip it's wonderful!!
omg i started doubting myself too, i have been searching for years for a clip of this show i think the shock of the ending has stayed with me all this time, i was searching for lottie, gosh, i was never going to find it lol
OMG thank you for uploading this. Its been imbedded into my psyke since 1984.
I want to see the whole series now. Dose anyone remember how this ended in such a horrible way? ittle "apple" died because of bitchdoll "Marchpayne" causing a fire in the house and making apple dance for her and the other dolls be her servants. very "Dominatrix!"
'Network Video' the DVD company should release this. It was Oliver Postgate's Smallfilms best programme after Bagpuss and The Clangars. The scene where Mr Plantagenet asks Tottie if they can still be happy after Birdy's death is a pure heartbreaker!
I seem to remember reading somewhere online that the original negs of this series were damaged in a fire. does anyone know where this clip originated from?
Apple is the most darling little doll

Thanks for this clip.
I wish they'd release this series onto DVD. I'm assuming that it actually still does exist somewhere in the archives??
It was made by Smallfilms, who made Bagpuss, The Clangers, etc.
