@dwc99cyf I used both Miracle Gro Moisture Control and also Jungle Grow which you can get at Lowes. Your soil might not be the only reason things are slow. Things like temperature and watering can come into play as well.
The tomatoes look like birds got to them? Then the bugs enjoy what's left. If you get alot of that, you can harvest the tomatoes when they just turn red and finish ripening on the counter or pantry shelf. Birds only seem to go for the perfect ripe ones.
Great looking stuff J. I'm jealous. The heat has just been brutal here in Dallas. Over 100 for days on end. Everything just wilts in the day and perks back up at night. Nothing is hardly setting fruit. Waiting for some relief. Might just be fall before we get it though.
Kill those bugs! Pesky little critters need to die.
Multiple things that need to be addressed. First, your statement of HE is laying eggs. Second, how well is your vision if you can see it is a he?!?! That is all.
@ROMEYYOUROCK Wait so you were previously under the assumption that I thought I knew what I was talking about?? I pretty much lie/make stuff up the entire time in these videos. I will make better attempts to not be as subtle in the future :).
AWESOME job on this years garden buddy - you came a long way from the upside down bucket garden and I been soakin up all the tips from all the great comments!!!!
everything is looking great jason, keep it up... and yeah, go hand out a little whoop ass on those lil bastard bugs for me too... hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Yeah baby!!! take it easy, catch ya soon.. laterz...
@wmkk808 Oh I did :). It is pretty much just the damn squash bugs. You have to kill them in waves. They all die and then a few weeks later some more show up.
Jason have you tried planting Marigolds around your beds? I had an old time gardener tell me about this a couple years ago when I had trouble with bugs going after my pumpkin plants. I planted some around my beds and didn't have any more problems with bugs. When he told me about this he said that they don't like the smell of the Marigolds and it keeps them away.
@quillsd I have heard that, but not tried it. Really it is just the squash bugs on my squash plants. So a good spraying normally takes care of it. But I might try it next year. Always like trying new stuff.
@redherringbone I do get that sometimes :). I finally have just accepted that it is how I roll and even when I try to make them less shakey or move less quickly it just doesn't work. So hang on for the ride! :) I'm originally from up north. Not a big southern accent, but I do say Ya'll.
About those holes in your tomatoes, they may not be bugs. It looks like a bird was pecking at them. The birds will peck at them to get the water from them, not to eat them. Here in vegas, i have to harvest my tomatoes before they turn 100% red otherwise the birds will see them and start pecking at them. it makes a hole in the side of the tomato just like i see in your video.
Jason, everything looks really good. You need some Neem oil to spray on your squash to get rid of the squash bugs. I have to dust with Dipel dust and I just noticed the squash bugs today, we were out there killing them by hand. Rick crushed a couple of them in the throes of passion : ) Anything I can do to make sure they don't lay eggs, is good. Thanks for sharing. Noreen
That's going well. Those tomatoes that got sick. Tomatoes can pick up diseases from previous crops if grown in the same place in successive years - that's why I switch sides each year in the greenhouse (except this year when I had 4 planted and forgot there were tomatoes in the same place last year). I wonder would it be worth investigating the value of raking the soil from the back of the beds to the front to top up and then putting fresh stuff at the back next year?
@baconsoda I gotcha. Last year I got the blight I think back in Sept. The problem is there really isn't anywhere else to plant the tomatoes other than the backs of the beds. Maybe some newer soil like you said. Luckily it is slowly spreading and I'll get most of the tomatoes I want this year......hopefully.
Your garden is awesome. I'm going to sub so I can go back and watch your others. My garden is not doing that well. I'm in TN, maybe I can get some pointers by watching the ones you did in the past. Thanks for sharing.
@Carrie3570 Thanks! I don't do a whole lot that is special to have my garden be pretty successful. The heat here this time of year really seems to make the tomatoes struggle, but the peppers and other veggies like the heat. Thanks for watching.
Yikes, what sort of bug did all that damage to your tomatoes. Nasty. You've got so many though so it's probably not a big deal. Great looking cucumbers & peppers. You always do well with peppers. I think you'll have some good corn shortly too. Great garden.
@garygardens I think birds got them since the damage was so big on certain tomatoes. But there are plenty others still ok. Maybe i'll get a scarecrow :).
@ms18ins I use Sevin's spray and it works well. Really the biggest bug problem I have is squash bugs. I've sprayed the plants a few times and gets rid of about everything, until they come back of course :)
@ms18ins You should look into planting some heat tolerant varieties. It's been over 100 degrees here in las Vegas and everything is doing just fine so far. Mulch the soil, use sub-surface irrigation tubing, and plant the tomatoes close together (every 2ft). They will grow into each other and keep themselves much cooler.
@nicolejohnson624 Yeah that was really really bad :). Luckily I have no shame and don't mind looking like a fool. I can't wait to see what I forget next.
Jason, What soil etc. do you use in your beds. Mine do not grow as fast as yours. They grow really really slowly.

Jason, be aware that corn is going to attract all kind of pests to your garden. Animals will be attracted to it!

use a flower bloom/booster fertilizer low nitrogen and try putting a bird bath out will stop the birds from looking for juice in your tomatoes.

You really need to take care of those BUG "SEEDS"? Hmm, bug seeds.

Might want to pull those leaves off below that truss of better boys at 1:15. If that's a disease you don't want it to spread.

@ASFx2600 Yeah I started getting them off the plant. I'll have to see about doing something different next year to help prevent it.
