@dle777 Thanks, well it's very hard to recall what I played (improvised ) 2 years ago but I do hear many triads within the Dorian tonality also 7th chord arpeggios, sometimes I play Fmaj7 and Cmaj7 arpeggios over Dm7. Something that caught my ear was playing E minor pentatonic over the Dm7 getting all upper partials of the chord. E(9) G(4) A(5) B(6) D(root). These ideas you can transpose to Ebm7. Vic.

@ClappingSnakes Thank you, I'm a Jazz musician, I have an improvising-attitude. I know my theory and how to apply it creatively in diverse musical situations. Greetings Vic.
miles is one of my favorite jazz artists, and "so what" is a really amazing peice,i love playing it on the Bass, and i think u did an amazing job with it.

Thanks Axilus, that's it basically what you mentioned, except the fact that I have a strat single coil in the middle for the thin funky sound, here I mainly use the humbuckers for the warm Jazz-tone, greets Vic.
but my question is - can you tell me what pickups precisely do you use? or is this information classified? :) asking because i will need to change pickups in my guitar as well, bought me a cheap es-335 copy with good acoustic sound, but worse amplified sound.
axiluss,I use two Seymour Duncan"Seth Lover" (humbuckers and 1 Alnico pro 2 (single coil) for your information, not cheap but great pick-ups. Greets Vic.

Jazzadelic, long before the Internet period I've been gathering Jazz info in book form, Books of Mel Bay, Joe Pass, Ted Green, Charles Green(trumpet) Wim Overgaauw, I agree with your vision. Most important is not only gathering(hamstering) Info but internalizing all this to memory and fingers this is where the actual wood-shedding begins. Real Jazz is played from inside-out in the moment, that's what I do,greets Vic.
Hi Victor I really enjoyed your playing and "taste". I really thank you because I'm a guitarist with a past of rock-blues, maybe funky, who is now trying to approach jazz and modal playing, so "so what" is one of the song i'm using now to learn this kind of playing. Your video gave me great ideas and a view of the possibility offered by a simple dorian mode on a song of only two chords. Really good work, I'll put on my favourite.
Indeed a good choice to make the switch (with all respect), if you annalyze all the arpeggio's that are situated within that scale you'll be surprised,Miles was very intelligent and had a philosophy, I believe it was: I'll interpret freely: within the simple lies all the complex,it's a matter of choice,Vic.
Incredible =) I'm not really into Miles Davis playing. Don't really like the sound of the trumpet, but he did write some good songs like this one.
Vic, do you think this is a good song for a beginner to learn? I've been learning Footprints, it's easy. However, I've been only improvising with the minor pentatonic scale. The next step is to learn to use the major scale and it's modes and mix it all together.
Hi sashaafm, you bet Miles wrote some great tunes, this is a good one to learn the dorian mode (2 of major) so it will spell: Dm dorian and Ebm Dorian basically for this tune, success, Vic.
haha, well i was watching a few of your other videos and you're a great guitarist. Im just wondering about the backing track because i play guitar as well and can't find many Miles backing tracks.
Hi t3hgir, these tracks are from Jamey Aebersold play along CD's ,there are Sites where you can purchase backing tracks per number or go to the Jamey Site where you can order CD's greets Vic.
Thanks EggTheBox, I love Jazz and Blues,finger-style acoustic work also, over the years I've developed a sound that is "me", what I hear in my mind, thanks for listening and the great comment,Vic.
Hey great playing I actually enjoyed it very much. Thanks. I do have a small inquiry about your tone. Maybe I have overlooked it on your page but I was just wondering what amp are you playing and what are your settings for the treb. bass. mid and reverb? thanks so much
Hey Vic, I was just wondering wether your using the lydian chromatic concept of tonal organization in this song? And if so which scales are you using? Such as lydian augmented, lydian flat 7 and so on. And what other techniques are you using? Such as side stepping.
Hi Daniel, basically Dm (dorian) and Ebm (Dorian), what I use here instead of D-dorian is E minor pentatonic ,sounding further away from the chord and instead of Eb-dorian F minor penta(this is the same concept only placed a half tone higher). what I also use instead of D-Dorian is D melodic minor(same as Dorian only with raised 7= C#) The C# gives a nice color that's asking to be resolved. I'm not familiar with the term side stepping, what does it mean? Greets Vic.
Hi Vic, its called harmonic side stepping and say everyone is playing in D dorian, the soloist can go a semi-tone up or a semi-tone down ( C# dorian or D# dorian) briefly to create some tension, very similar to playing outside the chord.
I love the pentatonic idea, very nice :D. I have never even dreamed of using melodic minor instead of dorian! When you play the #7 of the D melodic minor would you be playing that on the down beat or the up beat?...
Thanks Daniel, thanks for explanation, as you hear I also play a great deal of triads and 7th-chord arpeggios that are within the Dorian tonality these also greatly add to the color of ones solo, Right now I'm trying to also apply all triads and 7th-chords that are within the Melodic minor mode (very interesting). I have no fixed rules for applying the C# note, mostly as a tension passing note. I like the Idea very much using 3 optional penta-modes (Am Dm Em) against Dmi, all quite different,Vic.
Hey Vic. Great video, love the jazz. I have a question for you though, or any seasoned jazz guitarist who may come across this. I am a guitar player myself (mostly rock and blues) who has been listening to jazz for a while now and have bought a couple of jazz guitar books, worked through them a bit, but just couldn't get that swingin' jazzy improv sound. Do you have any advice for me or could direct me to a great learning resource you know of? Much appreciated!
Hi yesOgenesis, learn your theory, scales, arpeggios, diverse concepts, playing scales in all possible intervals, but also listen to records and jam along ,steel some licks here and there change them a little make them your own and actually use them in your playing, books and Info is lying in the Street in my days that wasn't so,just a bash of jazz records, greets Vic.
Thanks Vic. The problem with me is that while I am familiar with my theory, scales, modes etc I am not very good at applying it to jazz playing. Never really quite sure which "outside" notes to bring into the equation while playing to make the jazz happen as I am a very diatonic player.
Hi yesOgenesis, did you check out my lessons on Jazz, they're in a playing list on my profile, you might find some useful info in there, there will be more in the future, greetings Vic.
Thanks Edwin, Miles has and always will stay of great importance for my jazz playing, always been inspired by his recordings and way of playing, greetings Vic.
Hi Blues... before I started doing vids I experimented for a while and compared many working methods, I record everything through a small mixer (Spirit-notepad) where all signals from backingtrack and guitar are(stereo) mixid before going to the audio-port of my Mac PC. This for optimal sound quality, greets Vic.
Hi JG - thanks for getting back again - sorry for the confusion. I assumed your sound wasn't just the cheap internal mic or something! You can hear that it is DI'd, this does give the best sound it would seem...
Hi JG, Bluesbren here - finally trying to get around to uploading some videos (only have a few up so far) and I love the sound quality you're getting - what are you using to sync up the video and audio?
Hi Bluesbren, I don't sync anything , the Audio and Video is done simultaneously I love working that way, that's Jazz, what you play is what you get. I use the built in Camara of my Mac-osx and I make the Movies in Imovie, greets Vic.
Sure - sorry, I don't think I explained well! I realised that you record both simultaneously, it's just that I thought you might be using the camera's own mic (which is normally not good) - now I know you record straight into iMovie. Keep up the excellent work, love your playing....
Mercy beaucoup mon Ami, I know exactly what you're saying, I'm answering in English my french is very poor, hope you understand me, keep on playing and studying mon Ami,Salut Vic. (Thanks for friends invitation).
Hi gent30x glad you digged my version of this fine Standard, it's a simple motive but therefor many many possibilities lie open for improvisation and that's my bag man, greetings Vic.
Dank je sjazohn, ja heel belangrijk het gevoel, er moet van binnen wat gebeuren, elke keer maak je een reis vol verassingen dat is improvisatie en Jazz, groetjes Vic.
I really like your tone and you have some nice licks and good phrasing. Maybe try going outside the key a bit--adding some tension/dissonance to tell more of a story.
Hi sciffi96, yeah I'm strictly playing melody (improvisation) and the piano is doing the comping with background chords,I play octave solo here too, Greets Vic.
Hi Jackman951, I always thought playing on YT was about commenting on the Music not the wrapping, anyway, it's from a play along I borrowed from my brother called: "The Magic of Miles Davis". You can purchase these CD's at Jamey Aebersold's Site. Vic.
Thanks zabman23, good comment, it's all about balance, walkin the thin Rope called Music, just uploaded "Blue in Green" you might enjoy that great ballad from Miles,Vic.
wow! that epi sounds greaaaaat! could it be about settings? what amp and what string gauge do you use? thanks for the info. i love your playing, keep on!
Hi pamirs94, thanks, here I'm going straight into a small 4 channel mixer, with a little low eq added, the output from the mixer goes straight to the audio port of my PC, check my newest Vid: All the Black&White things(no reverb added) tell me what you think,Greets Vic.
Thanks dziepiejazz, well there was a time I really listened to him a lot,I liked his natural flow of playing , very solid timing , inventiveness and ofcourse the octaves, greets Vic.
Thanks Intoapocalypse, good thing you mentioned that, when I play I don't think of my Ego but the Music I'm playing and respect I have for the composer and what I can add by improvising, the first thing is to get rid of the Ego,then the true "me" will show in all integrity (zen)Greets Vic.
Making melodies out of triads is like making love to a beautiful woman without having to pay for it.

I thought the meaning of this playing for each other is about actually commenting about the Music????? Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
haha, well i was watching a few of your other videos and you're a great guitarist. Im just wondering about the backing track because i play guitar as well and can't find many Miles backing tracks.
t3hgir 2 years ago
Hi t3hgir, these tracks are from Jamey Aebersold play along CD's ,there are Sites where you can purchase backing tracks per number or go to the Jamey Site where you can order CD's greets Vic.

Hey great playing I actually enjoyed it very much. Thanks. I do have a small inquiry about your tone. Maybe I have overlooked it on your page but I was just wondering what amp are you playing and what are your settings for the treb. bass. mid and reverb? thanks so much
LordMongoose13 2 years ago
Thanks Lord... here I went straight into my 4 channel mixer just lifted the bass a little, the treble and mid are flat, glad you enjoyed,Vic.

Hey Vic, I was just wondering wether your using the lydian chromatic concept of tonal organization in this song? And if so which scales are you using? Such as lydian augmented, lydian flat 7 and so on. And what other techniques are you using? Such as side stepping.
Much thanks
Daniel :)
squirrel696969 2 years ago
Hi Daniel, basically Dm (dorian) and Ebm (Dorian), what I use here instead of D-dorian is E minor pentatonic ,sounding further away from the chord and instead of Eb-dorian F minor penta(this is the same concept only placed a half tone higher). what I also use instead of D-Dorian is D melodic minor(same as Dorian only with raised 7= C#) The C# gives a nice color that's asking to be resolved. I'm not familiar with the term side stepping, what does it mean? Greets Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
Hi Vic, its called harmonic side stepping and say everyone is playing in D dorian, the soloist can go a semi-tone up or a semi-tone down ( C# dorian or D# dorian) briefly to create some tension, very similar to playing outside the chord.
I love the pentatonic idea, very nice :D. I have never even dreamed of using melodic minor instead of dorian! When you play the #7 of the D melodic minor would you be playing that on the down beat or the up beat?...
squirrel696969 2 years ago
Thanks Daniel, thanks for explanation, as you hear I also play a great deal of triads and 7th-chord arpeggios that are within the Dorian tonality these also greatly add to the color of ones solo, Right now I'm trying to also apply all triads and 7th-chords that are within the Melodic minor mode (very interesting). I have no fixed rules for applying the C# note, mostly as a tension passing note. I like the Idea very much using 3 optional penta-modes (Am Dm Em) against Dmi, all quite different,Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
...By the way, your tone and technique are great! I love listening to you play :)
Much thanks
Daniel

That was quite some solo, especially liked the octave runs. Great stuff, as always.

Jazzguts 2 years ago
Much appreciated!
yes0genesis 3 years ago
Hi yesOgenesis, learn your theory, scales, arpeggios, diverse concepts, playing scales in all possible intervals, but also listen to records and jam along ,steel some licks here and there change them a little make them your own and actually use them in your playing, books and Info is lying in the Street in my days that wasn't so,just a bash of jazz records, greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Thanks Vic. The problem with me is that while I am familiar with my theory, scales, modes etc I am not very good at applying it to jazz playing. Never really quite sure which "outside" notes to bring into the equation while playing to make the jazz happen as I am a very diatonic player.
yes0genesis 3 years ago
Hi yesOgenesis, did you check out my lessons on Jazz, they're in a playing list on my profile, you might find some useful info in there, there will be more in the future, greetings Vic.

Thanks Edwin, Miles has and always will stay of great importance for my jazz playing, always been inspired by his recordings and way of playing, greetings Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Correction - I thought you might NOT be using the cameras own mic and going into a mixer first as the sound is very good - hope that makes sense now!
bluesbren 3 years ago
Hi Blues... before I started doing vids I experimented for a while and compared many working methods, I record everything through a small mixer (Spirit-notepad) where all signals from backingtrack and guitar are(stereo) mixid before going to the audio-port of my Mac PC. This for optimal sound quality, greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Hi JG - thanks for getting back again - sorry for the confusion. I assumed your sound wasn't just the cheap internal mic or something! You can hear that it is DI'd, this does give the best sound it would seem...
bluesbren 3 years ago
Hi JG, Bluesbren here - finally trying to get around to uploading some videos (only have a few up so far) and I love the sound quality you're getting - what are you using to sync up the video and audio?
bluesbren 3 years ago
Hi Bluesbren, I don't sync anything , the Audio and Video is done simultaneously I love working that way, that's Jazz, what you play is what you get. I use the built in Camara of my Mac-osx and I make the Movies in Imovie, greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Sure - sorry, I don't think I explained well! I realised that you record both simultaneously, it's just that I thought you might be using the camera's own mic (which is normally not good) - now I know you record straight into iMovie. Keep up the excellent work, love your playing....

Thanks colossus, what do you categorize under post-bop?, like this isn't Bop,this is modal Jazz, I like mainstream Jazz as well,Greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Terrific version! You can tell you're enjoying playing this! Love this tune..
Used to play the Ronny Jordan version live a few years ago and the main riff at that tempo is damn hard!!
The swing feel is more true to the original, which I really prefer..
bluesbren 3 years ago
Thank you bluesbren, glad you enjoyed,I agree I like the swing version more, however I have played a funk version now and then, greets Vic.

hey victor,
I really like your tone and you have some nice licks and good phrasing. Maybe try going outside the key a bit--adding some tension/dissonance to tell more of a story.

Jackman951 3 years ago
Hi Jackman951, I always thought playing on YT was about commenting on the Music not the wrapping, anyway, it's from a play along I borrowed from my brother called: "The Magic of Miles Davis". You can purchase these CD's at Jamey Aebersold's Site. Vic.

intoapocalypse 3 years ago
Thanks Intoapocalypse, good thing you mentioned that, when I play I don't think of my Ego but the Music I'm playing and respect I have for the composer and what I can add by improvising, the first thing is to get rid of the Ego,then the true "me" will show in all integrity (zen)Greets Vic.
