I never understood why, when they did the movie, they changed the character from someone recently released for a mental hospital to a guy who's just nervous about flying. Shatner's character has his whole life at stake but does the right thing, whereas Lithgow's character has almost nothing at stake, and it takes the air right out of the story.

@kurtmanerz1 I still find it just as effective. Lithgow's character suffers from rather severe aviatophobia, so it still gives the crew reason to disbelieve him. It also still puts his life at stake, because he's believed to just be crazy and is thus carted away on a stretcher at the end, likely to be sent to a mental hospital. Plus, the gremlin in the remake is far scarier. Both performancewise, I think Lithgow and Shatner were both good.
