BTW the hole in the bottom would originally have had a cover that accessed the bolt that secured the safe to the floor.

No way did that little pot of thermite cut through that safe and damage the inside the way it did. Where was the hole it supposedly cut? Most of the heat frojm that freestanding pot would have gone up and away, probably only just burned the painwork.

@pwnz0rz0r Nah half the stuff on brainiac is faked (well maybe more than half of it) so they generally fix it so that they get the desired result. For example, this safe may be as you said weaker than normal safes. They obviously faked the alkali metal reactions, 5g of caesium can apparently blow up a bath tub- nope, you'll get a bigger bang from a party popper.

Obviously it's faked - thermite can do that, but not that way. The reaction would go finished, then you would see it slowly heat up - the paint burns of and the area around the pot gets red hot (asuming that the pot can hold the molten iron in place without crack or melt). The hole in the bottom of that pot is also way to small - the molten iron need a big contact area with the steel. And the door wont blow open that way - the hole just burned is by far enough to let out the hot air.
