Sexual orientation is influenced by societal norms, organized religion, the way a person grows up, and mostly I think what a person simply prefers. I believe it's a mix of these things and that it's too complex to boil down to one given thing or reason.

They need to be shown *real* scientific data and be shown the reality of sexual orientation. I did appreciate the second half saying that gays should be loved not hated. Just because there is no identified gay gene (actually, it would more likely be a series of genes) does not mean that one does not exist, or that people aren't born gay.
For that matter, hormonal fluctuations in the mother, or epigenetics (which control the expression of genes) could also be the cause. Hormonal manipulation has actually been used to create "gay" animals.
The fact that people don't pick up on these things demonstrates how weak their understanding of biology is.
