And yeah I bet it was just a few who could do it flat out. It was a dangerous corner, but a really really big challenge even with the ground effect cars.
It basically ceased to exist as a corner after the 1984 revamp. It's character only shines through in rain - remember Raikkonen on Hamilton and Massa in 2008.
Wow I thought Eau Rouge was 'streamlined' back in 1979 with the inception of the 7 km track. I didn't know the 1980s cars have given it a go. It has only been modified in time for the 1984 Spa 24h.
I preferred the old, more 'curved', more demanding version though I see the point of the modification now: Rosberg and the Ferrari before him tangled horribly when they reached the top of the apex which was back then exactly at the end of the more steep part of the corner.
What are you on about? Have you even heard of Vettel? His win at Monza in '08 was exceptional. Lewis did a damn fine job in '09 as well with a poor car. Not to mention all of Schumacher's drives in inferior machinery.
This rose tinted "the old days were better" crap really is pissing me off. They were banging on about exactly the same thing in the early '80s! "It's not what it once was" is a quote I have from an Autosport issue from early '82.
Today, as then, the best racers (in driving talent AND professionalism) go to the front. Sliding or twitching today's glued-to-the-track F1 car LOSES time and speed; that's really why you don't see it anymore. But those of us who've been around can count ourselves lucky to have seen Ronnie Peterson, Gilles Villenueve, and Keke Rosberg make our hair stand on end!
Excelente Piloto.
keke was the most naturally fast driver in those days and was very good in shitty conditions, sort of like senna but many times less gifted. what suprised me was that he was always so mad, always very close to crashing on almost every few corners, im suprised he didnt cause frank williams to drop dead of a heart attack!

Not really. ReJ40 is simply bashing Lewis here, the boy is superbly talented. Give him the 83 Williams and tell him to go through Eau Rouge and he will do it as fast if not faster than Rosberg. Lewis may not be the next Senna as same claim he is, but the talent is most certainly there even. Watch an on-board lap of Monaco with Lewis, one of the best moments of the 2007 season.
You're right. He'd go through there faster and smoother.
Before I get bashed, let me say this. I hate Lewis as much as the rest for being a PR's dream and the arrogance that seeps from his pores, but Schumacher was arrogant too, as was Senna and don't forget Prost and Piquet and Mansell and even Keke Rosberg. Lewis is the world champion, he is one of the best out there (my vote still goes to Alonso) and to deny his talent and say he wouldn't hold a candle to Rosberg is a straight out fallacy.
K let me reply in defense here. No I am not a Lewis fan. I do think he's a PR Machine. Yes I think Keke can manhandle a car better than Lewis.... but yes they are both obviously talented they both won the WDC.
But as much as you have every right to defend Lewis... I have every right to hold an opinion too. Drivers of the day are, to me, much braver than any current driver considering the difference in the cars they drove and tracks they drove on.
and yes, I do know a lot about F1. It's been my life for over half the time ive been on this earth. You can't take 2 (admittantly poorly written) lines as your basis to judge what I know about the sport. I can discuss F1 with the best of you whether you know (or like it) or not!
Now lets all calm down and enjoy the clip shall we?
They did look different. The FIA banned ground effects so the designers moved a lot of the weight to the back and made the cockpit area look quite thin.
I hated the huge disproportioned wings and styling of the 83 and 84 cars. They looked better from 85 onwards. I don't like all the little fiddley bits on the current cars, none of the current cars really look that great (sans the 04 and 05 McLaren, I liked that one)
The 70's cars, especially the ones with the huge rear tyres (eg. Lotus 72) looked great.
Fantastic car control by Keke, he is in my opinion one of the fastest drivers ever.

Lewis "PR Machine" Hamilton couldn't do that if his life depended on it..
All hail non-pussy F1 drivers
ReJ40 4 years ago 5
It's because of present day F1 cars' dependency on aerodynamic grip and their cornering speed, not because the drivers are less skilled than before.
