I'm a very big guy and test rode about three 650r's for a buddy who was looking for a bike. I loved it. There's a lot of value there. I've gone 186mph and am state certified to 152mph, lol. It does get boring going that fast on open roads. The twisties up in the mountains, where you rarely have room to go over 60mph, are far more fun and "thrilling". Shiny side up!
Tempe! I miss that town. I'm thinking about getting the 2012 Ninja 650 love the updates, also the Versys is cool. I just wonder about long distance touring, especially with a passenger.
@sharrkbiite Depends on where I'm at. Chains for big cities. Wheel lock if it will be unattended for a while. Otherwise I park in the most public place I can find. I think people being around is the best security.
@AtlasRider I'm planning to get a new 2012 ninja 650r this coming spring/summer. should I also get some kind of GPS tracking device or do you think it's a big waste of money?
@AtlasRider just out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking... do you live in Arizona by any chance? i used to live there and the terrain and just the area looks very familiar ;o
You rode it 40K + Wow that is a lot for such a short time. I have a ? have you had to change the timing chain yet, and what type of oil do you use. Synthetic or regular SAE 10-40 oil. I really like your bike type..Thank's for a good review, yl
Thanks for the informative video. I purchased a 09 650R new last year. I have about 3200 miles on it. I live in North E. GA and there's plenty of twisties and little to no traffic. Your right about the maneuverability of the 650R it's perfect for the every day commute or weekend ride.

Hi love this video. I am looking into getting a motorcycle myself i am 20 , 6.3" 165 lb and i am not sure what i should go with either 250r or 650r. i am not an aggressive driver, i wanted a bike as long as i can remember, wondering what would you recommend to a beginner a 250r or 650r i am looking to drive on a freeway and the i found that i can get 250r and 650r for about the same price used. Around 3000 dollars.
@gaivoron Neither bike would really be suitable for you at 6'3", the footpegs are simply too high on the chassis. You'd be better to look at some of the Suzuki or Yamaha offerings, they tend to be a bit better for taller riders.
Would you recomend this for a first bike? I plan on taking MSF class soon and want to get a bike after basic training. I just dont want to kill myself with too much power, but everyone that owns a 250 talks about "trading up" to a 650.
@AtlasRider I really wanted a sports bike but i am fresh into riding and i have been offered this bike the 06 for 2500 and a 03 GSXR 600 for 3000 but i don't know what to do with....what ya think
@AtlasRider I want to start riding as soon as i get my drivers license. what would you recommend for my first bike? I currently ride a 250 fourstroke dirtbike offroading but thats getting a little week for me. should i start off with a 650 or bigger? Im really descent on two wheels
@drunksmokingjurkk Depends on what state you live in. In a lot of states, if you're under 18, the highest cc bike you can legally drive (on the roads, at least) is 250.
@picture042 I could never get my 650r to wheelie, but after some practice if found a sweet spot in the powerband. I'm not very good at really, but I know some guys that can hop on and pop the wheel way up on stock.
I've had my 2010 Ninja 250r for about 9 months now and love it. It's my daily commuting as well as my thrill ride. I've had no problems yet (knock on wood) and love it. I'm thinking about a new (ish) Ninja 650r, only thing stopping me is the price! Two wheels is the way to go for me, whether it's a trip across my fine state of Georgia, going to work, going to school, even going to drill. I'd gladly take a bike over a car any day of the week.
@AtlasRider Her man quick question! So I'm riding an 08 kawi versys currently. And right now I have the option to sell and replace it with a 2010 (new) ninja 650r or a 2011 versys. Just wondering what your thoughts would be!
@1MPALASS 650 was my first bike and is still my bike had it since 09 and never get tired of riding it dont get a 250 or 500 ud prob just wanna upgrade after a month of riding
like the video, it gave me more insight on my decision of getting a bike, and it looks like you were in tempe cuz if you were i live not far from the place you started the video, and i think i saw tempe marketplace lol
Nice video! My percussion instructor (who is going through a mid life crisis) has a 650R and I think it is so sexy! And at 6:12 you pull next to a Tiburon!! I have a 2008 Tiburon SE myself.
@TheGaytrix You know Im actually thinking of doing the same thing. I'm 19 tell me how it goes if you do Im hoping to have enough to buy it buy the end of next year.
Plus the price sounds amazing tell me how your insurance goes usually first timers get fucked hard thats what I been hearing
hey, i was just wondering would you recomand a 650r for a 19 year old, I'm wanting to get a ninja just not sure wether the 250r or the 650r but I really want the 650r, do you have any pointers on how i can solve my problem?
Lol I was looking at the buildings and was like hey! That's Tempe marketplace and riverview haha I like how the camera is so clear and you don't hear the wind and all that garbage in some other bike vids I've watched. I'm interested in getting a 650 as well if anyone in mesa/Tempe is selling a used one with no internal problems let me know. I don't mind if it is scratched or whatever. Just as long as it was taken care of and serviced regularly. Nice video by the way. You were the deciding facto
raise your hand if you panicked when the view started shifting every which way and you felt like you were falling..... Once you'll fallen your never the same :-/
Dude, enjoy the vids. Recent subscriber. I know this is an old video & you are completing a trip around South America on your KLR 650 you have since purchased. I just have to point out to your viewers as I'm certain you now realise the Ninja 650R & KLR 650 have entirely different engines.
I've always not liked the idea of a killswitch for that reason. I'm afraid that when I start riding I will accidentally kill it and not know what to do.
@jillybooty if that ever happnes just flip it back to the on position and your bike will just resume like it would normally. I had it happen to me at 70 miles an hour and i was like O.O then i hit it back on and wa la, like nothing happened.
I just got a 650R and I love it so far. I have done a bit to it, but nothing extreme. I was wondering if you would recommend clip ons? Also, what kind gear do you have with your helmet so you can talk? I need something where I can talk and listen to music without having earbuds in, if possible. Something with bluetooth would be great.
Ah... you just killed the bike. I did that once. Scared the hell outta me. I didn't know what was going on. LoL.
I'm seriously thinking about getting a bike to commute on (and to have a little fun occasionally). I'm about to turn 19, so I'm still kinda worried about insurance stuff if i get one. I was wondering how old you were when you started riding?
@zlink8 I'm not sure how much your insurance would be but I imagine it'd be pretty high on a 650cc sport bike. Did you consider the Ninja 250r? If it's just for commuting and getting around, a 250 would be more than enough. Slap some 650 stickers on there if it makes you feel better, lol
@incognito84 Thanks for the reply! But, I've heard the 250r is too light for the highway, like the wind pushes it around really bad and stuff like that. Before I'd commute my normal way on the highway to school I'd just take the longer way off till i get used to riding, but the lightweight thing still kinda makes me feel iffy on the 250r.
@RogerOlle that's awesome man, i just got a 650r and im looking for insurance now, allstate quoted me at 600 a year... im 21 with an okay driving record, ill check out preogressive
I was wondering what your thoughts are on the 650r's storage options? I have been looking into the tank and saddle bags. Have any suggestions on type or brands?
Additionally, how well would it accommodate a passenger and still have storage for a small amount of luggage?
I ride dirt bikes and wheelers, i'm 15 and next year i wanna get a sport motorcycle, what would be a good bike for me. is this too big for me? I'm about 5'5" and 140 pounds.
@AltasRider I was wondering would the insurance rate go down if I take the BRC on top of being 26 w/ only 1 speeding ticket on my record. Also I'm trying to avoid going into showrooms...would this bike fit me? I'm 5'10" about 215lbs. I ask because I heard this bike sits fairly low and just needs a aftermarket seat. I'm debating this bike or a yamaha fz6r or the suzuki sv650s. Sorry if I'm asking alot. Its just that I'm trying to do as much research as possible. Thanks for any info.
Dang bro $800 is a lot for a head gasket change, & the valves on a 2 cyl (8 valves) shouldnt be more than $100 especially if its been open already. You could do this yourself if you looked online for a DIY, i've done my own valve adjustment on a 250 just by using the internet, and the gasket you just buy and use sealant to seat it back in its place.
Great review! I'm looking to purchase my first bike this coming summer and I have been bouncing back and forth between the 250r and 650r. Most reviews seem to push me to the 650r. Thanks for the post, looking forward to getting my own!
I crashed my 650R in an unfortunate lowside around a somewhat sharp curve a couple weeks ago and I've been looking at other bikes for purchase, but for some reason I can't get the 650R out of my head. I want something with a little more power, but the 650R was so fun to ride, it's hard for me to envision myself riding anything heavier or more "wild". What would you recommend? I've heard VStroms are nice bikes for Sport Touring...
@SwoopdySwoop I get to the far left or right of the lane so that if the car behind me is going to hit me I can exit between the cards to the left or right.
@AtlasRider ok cool cause after whatching your vids, you have convinced me to get a 650r and get rid of my truck.....if you know hows the insurance if im 20 yrs thanks
@SwoopdySwoop Insurance for a 20 year old on a sport bike for full coverage will probably be around $2000/6 months. For Liability only it would be $200/6 months. Young kids total sportbikes frequently enough that the insurance companies make you pay a lot to have full coverage, because there's a good chance you bike would be totaled if you did have an accident.
@AtlasRider Jesus christ, I'm almost 25, but I'm not waiting another year to get my bike; gonna pay full price for my 650R (4-5000$, months of saving)
@AtlasRider 200 bucks for half a year? so 400 a full year??? I am 25 and will need to pay 1200 a year for a 250. Clean record too, whats your insurance?
For bikes, health insurance can be used in place of regular insurance, it just had to be valued for however much it was, look it up in your state, you might end up getting a better deal out of it.
@Bulgdoom Who is your insurance company? Where can I go to find out some info? I have been looking on google and what not but I cant find anything on it
Aetna, im actually under my dad's company health care plan. Make some calls to big Health Insurance Companies and ask them, thats what the phone operators are for.
@AtlasRider Im 18 and saving up to buy a Ninja 650, Ill probably have the money by time im 19, How much would insurance for me be on average without full coverage? I also only plan on having insurance for like 4 months out of the year because I'll be in school the rest of the year and it snows like crazy up at Erie. Thankyou.
Your logic is a slippery slope. By the same argument, I can say, if you cannot eat, talk on the phone, and drive then, you should not be driving. It is all about distractions that take your attention away from what you are supposed to be doing, which is driving and paying attention that you do not run over anybody.
When I get tired of the 500r this will probably be the next logical step for me. I really like the styling and if it performs as gracefully as its little brother then I know I'm going to love it. Thanks for the vid.
So you say this 650r was your first bike? I completed my MSF course a while ago and I've been riding around my friends bikes here and there just to keep my skills up till I finally purchase my own bike. I'm 5'9 and weigh 140.. I've sat on a 650r before and I felt just fine to me. Do you think it's to big of a bike to start with though??
@CrazySpaz833 The Kawi Bikes are really forgiving, the 650r is only two cylinders not the beastly four of some of the other brands. Id say go for the 650. I ride the 500r which was replaced by the 650 and it is amazing and fast, but its also really easy to learn on. The 650 will be no different.
You learn to change gear by the noise of the engine, same as a car. It's something that you will learn after a few minutes. Changing down a tiny bit different, if your in too high a gear the bike will shudder so change down. Most drivers/riders will make the odd mistake even after 20 years experience.
i am a new rider (ninja 250r), and i have a question: what are you doing when you stop? your clutch isn't in, are you still in gear? when i stop i hold my clutch in is that wrong?
I'm a very big guy and test rode about three 650r's for a buddy who was looking for a bike. I loved it. There's a lot of value there. I've gone 186mph and am state certified to 152mph, lol. Around 3000 dollars.
gaivoron 9 months ago
@gaivoron Neither bike would really be suitable for you at 6'3", the footpegs are simply too high on the chassis. You'd be better to look at some of the Suzuki or Yamaha offerings, they tend to be a bit better for taller riders.
awwylde 9 months ago
@awwylde are you serious thats sucks, i really like the 650r oh damn i guess yamahas are nice too gs500f or something like that

bertrum96 10 months ago
Would you recomend this for a first bike? I plan on taking MSF class soon and want to get a bike after basic training. I just dont want to kill myself with too much power, but everyone that owns a 250 talks about "trading up" to a 650.
ninnymuggins80 10 months ago
@ninnymuggins80 When treated with respect, I think the 650r is a good first bike if you don't want to start off on a small bike.

Im really descent on two wheels
drunksmokingjurkk 9 months ago
@drunksmokingjurkk Dirt riding is the best place to start riding. A 650 sounds like a good step up for you. I wouldn't recommend much higher.
AtlasRider 9 months ago
@drunksmokingjurkk Depends on what state you live in. In a lot of states, if you're under 18, the highest cc bike you can legally drive (on the roads, at least) is 250.

@AtlasRider I'm getting one soon. Will these bikes wheelie just from throttling hard?
picture042 1 week ago

You were the deciding facto

jillybooty 1 year ago

I was wondering how old you were when you started riding?
zlink8 1 year ago
@zlink8 I'm not sure how much your insurance would be but I imagine it'd be pretty high on a 650cc sport bike. Did you consider the Ninja 250r? If it's just for commuting and getting around, a 250 would be more than enough. Slap some 650 stickers on there if it makes you feel better, lol
incognito84 1 year ago
@incognito84 Thanks for the reply! But, I've heard the 250r is too light for the highway, like the wind pushes it around really bad and stuff like that. Before I'd commute my normal way on the highway to school I'd just take the longer way off till i get used to riding, but the lightweight thing still kinda makes me feel iffy on the 250r.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on the 650r's storage options? I have been looking into the tank and saddle bags. Have any suggestions on type or brands?
Additionally, how well would it accommodate a passenger and still have storage for a small amount of luggage?

@wandertheverse Check out Cortech Saddle bags and Tail bail. Take off the tail bag and you should be able to fit a passenger.

@AtlasRider ok cool cause after whatching your vids, you have convinced me to get a 650r and get rid of my truck.....if you know hows the insurance if im 20 yrs thanks
SwoopdySwoop 1 year ago
@SwoopdySwoop Insurance for a 20 year old on a sport bike for full coverage will probably be around $2000/6 months. For Liability only it would be $200/6 months. Young kids total sportbikes frequently enough that the insurance companies make you pay a lot to have full coverage, because there's a good chance you bike would be totaled if you did have an accident.

For that money get health insurance and U won't need to get bike insurance, the health covers is. I pay $0.

@Bulgdoom Ur gonna have to explain that a bit better

For bikes, health insurance can be used in place of regular insurance, it just had to be valued for however much it was, look it up in your state, you might end up getting a better deal out of it.

what kind of camera were you using to film this?
shashka19 1 year ago
Your logic is a slippery slope. By the same argument, I can say, if you cannot eat, talk on the phone, and drive then, you should not be driving. It is all about distractions that take your attention away from what you are supposed to be doing, which is driving and paying attention that you do not run over anybody.
cruizing 1 year ago
Is it just me, or is this guy being negligent by filming, and talking while riding?

misterpooter 1 year ago
So you say this 650r was your first bike? I completed my MSF course a while ago and I've been riding around my friends bikes here and there just to keep my skills up till I finally purchase my own bike. I'm 5'9 and weigh 140.. I've sat on a 650r before and I felt just fine to me. Do you think it's to big of a bike to start with though??
CrazySpaz833 1 year ago
