  • My husband has been making this for years only he does it slightly different. He takes the individual leaves and brushes them lightly with olive oil then grills them till they start to wilt on the edges. After he takes them off he puts them on a plate and adds feta cheese crumbles and a light coating of Italian dressing. It is wonderful!

  • rubberwishes?

  • catch the steam for an even lighter dressing/ sun dried tomatoes, powered garlic

  • catch the steam for an even lighter dressing

  • catch the steam for an even lighter dressing

  • ohhhh; this reminds me of this wonderful resto in san francisco...we had this exact salad ....delish!

  • I rarely add comments, but I must say, John, since you aren't the chef in this video, and you sound downtrodden, I will miss your freedom to act alone, and without all recipes on your back :(

  • never had this - something I need to try

  • Looks yummy,,,will try!

  • Great recipe!

  • No es bueno!! First thumbs down for Chef John ever...guess you cant please all the people all the time, i will skip this one! Im headed back to chomp on my molasses brined double cut chop!

  • I didn't know lettuce had sugar

  • Hi Chef John, i would just like to say that all that lettuce you are filming at the Tanimura & Antle farm is all Monsanto genetically modified garbage. Please do not promote anything made or sponsored by Monsanto, if you dont know why please do your own research.

  • @Jeedawg i think you will have trouble convincing the millions of people that are starving and dying every day because they dont have enough food because their crops couldnt survive, or that there wasnt enough to go around. but luckily you dont have to worry since you have 14 local farmers markets where you can buy your overpriced organic lettuce. who cares if it doesnt effect you personally. down with evil corporations! yeah! big man is the devil! vaccines too! and pharma! conspiracy! blarrrgh!

  • @kekejojo1212 Look im not just saying this because i saw one video LOL Ive researched into this for a while now and i based my comment on my findings. Please do the same. And you are correct about the other things you mention also towards the end of your comment :P Let me guess, the world i just as you see it, nothing more nothing less. What you see is what you get? Go back to sleep, or wake up and join the rest of us!

  • wow, a barbeque for vegetarians!

  • For those of you that are wondering why women cover their face while working, is because of the sun and no chef John is not a tradition!. This is how they avoid sun burns and scars in their face and body. Notice they wear long sleeves too..

  • Great one Chef!

  • Looks fantastic and looks much faster then making regular salad!

  • youve made so many vegetarians happy lol

  • Ok, that is crazy, I may want to try that one!

  • Make a paella! :D

  • I don't like romaine, can I use your heart instead?

  • @pansyed Akwaaaaard

  • Not only do you provide delicious looking recipes, but the recipes are easy to follow - it's fun to have a relaxed chef guide you through these and even though I am a recent watcher, I plan on trying some of your recipes very soon!

  • Smart move removing the ability to put comments on the "How Lettuce Gets Harvested" video. Wouldn't want comments like "By Mexicans, that's how!"

  • Beautiful~~

  • Did those hard working Mexicans get a taste?

  • i don't like food, can i use rubber instead?

  • FSWSFTW!

  • dis is da bomb

  • Oh my gosh! We had this on our menu at Nokhu on Canyon in Fort Collins, CO - almost the same exact recipe! I loved this salad! Thanks for reminding me to make it more often!

  • That's not a salad. That's grilled lettuce.

  • @HDvideosaregood xD I lol'd.

  • @HDvideosaregood Notice he does say he's grilling lettuce

  • Cayenne is the audience's way of controlling Chef John. This is why Chef John is always reluctant and aware of his use of cayenne. He limits his use to show us that he is the one in control, not us. We feel we must have an impact on the dishes Chef John serves up.

  • Chef John can you give us some drink recipes? Lemonade? Shirley Temple?

  • @ka021608 Try a Lavender infused Lemonade - it's delicious!

  • YEAH DISABLING COMMENTS ON YOUR OTHER VIDEO INDEED...

'WOMEN TRADITIONALLY COVER THEIR FACES' WHILST PICKING LETTUCE

    HA

    MAYBE IN MEXICO

  • @mgblue In a lot of occupations where women cover their faces, it's because the men that are working there are usually handling sharp objects (like knives) and if you're a guy, then you know how distracting a pretty girl can be :P

  • @Tarko1989 ..im a gay so do the men have to cover their faces to?

  • Instead of grilling them why didn't you just eat them raw, tastier and healthier!

  • @henrysinaga If he did that it would be a eating show, not a cooking show :)

  • @SecretLifeofMissEna it's like taking something healthy like lettuce and making it unhealthy like grilling it.

  • OMG....What a disaster!

  • mmmm this looks good.

  • I have no idea what a Romain is so i thought that the thumbnail showed a grilled green mango....

  • @danicazelle13 Bearded dragons love romain lettuce. It is an idea food item for not only humans, but reptiles too!

  • mmm grilled leaves..

  • why grill lettuce ?! such a waste !

  • @vikakond I strongly agree with you.

  • Did anyone else wonder what the fuck was on the picture?

  • I use lettuce in casedilla. With cheese and ham or whatever. The lettuce tastes 'earthy' when it's cooked. It tastes like the garden... in a good way. It's like sliced pear on buttered toast - don't knock it till you try it ;)

  • That sounds Freaking AWESOME! :D

  • At first I was confused about caramelization on lettuce. Then it turns out romaine has tons of sugar. Thanks for indirectly informing me Chef John!

  • The blog post is a lie.
