I came to WoW from Asheron's Call, a game where all travel was through instantaneous portals you could just walk through.

I remember how incredulous I was that players in WoW had to wait for some imaginary boat or zeppelin to arrive in-game. If only captain P had been around when I started playing!

Captain Placeholder stood on the pier and teleported players from one continent to the other.

When they implemented the ship after a few patches they removed Placeholder.
