Just finished Under the Dome a few weeks ago, and while it is not Stephen King's at his best, I will gladly settle for average King over the best efforts of just about anybody else.
Thanks for this review. The UK edition is typically different and only has 880 pages but lacks the character index which would be so handy! Easier than have to go on Wiki to refresh my memory. I started this book about February time and took a hiatus until July so it's been a chore to pick it up again and I keep waiting for it to get interesting. I hope it does soon. I'm 280 odd pages in and it's not grabbed me like it did at the beginning. That was awesome.
@Paul3689 The UK edition didn't have a character index? Wow. I could imagine it could get difficult to keep up with the many, many characters. Yeah, I wouldn't say it's Stephen King's best. But it does have it's moments. Definitely a novel for the more patient readers. It doesn't move as quickly as it could have been. Let me know what you think when you finish it. :)
Great book! Characters to die for, perfectly paced, brillantly written, amazingly thought out, and it carries an important Political Allegory message across with it.
@lovesbooks21 Thanks! And I will check out your reviews. I'm actually thinking about completely recreating my channel soon and trying harder to make more impressive reviews, with better audio, writing, etc. Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it and I will for sure check out your reviews.
@ResidentEvilJake I didn't say she wasn't. But throughout the book she was being teased for her political beliefs, most notably by Barbie. She wasn't who I was referring to, though. I Mostly referring to the Mayor and his minions.
@RullyisJRM You're still misleading the facts. Barbie was commenting that Julia did not resemble his idea of Republican. This was actually sort of my own problem with the story. It was very apparent that King was making commentary on the conservative religious right. But it seemed like he was implying that Republican does not mean right wing conservative. Which is good, I agree with him. But I almost wished Julia would have given some answer to this. But she didn't even hint. Sheesh, women...
@aarondavid826 Thanks for the feedback. :) I posted another review on a different book with better audio . . . except I talked way too fast on that one, lol. Eh. Slowly but surely they'll get better. I hope.
Hey about my comment i tried to get across was to compare the book which is fiction to the horrendous calamity the has struck the coast of Mexico the oil spill . thanks.
I'm on page 499, so far so good! One thing I notice from the drawings of the characters (as seen in the cards in the limited adition and also on the books website, which I fergot the name of) is that Big Jim looks alot like Dick Cheney, and King said in interviews how he was fascinated by by how some felt 2000-2008 was like a puppet show where the real guy doing the heavy lifting was the VP, and so far this book describes that idea, so I thought that was interesting lol
@ViperRob42 Yep. King was inspired by a lot of politics and world events when writing this book. I also got the Dick Cheney vibe! Hope you enjoy the rest of the book. Let me know what you thought. :)
"Be patient...the two of you who listen to this" lol :D
Nice review. I'm only 200 pages in, but I can see your point about some characters/situations being unrealistic. I almost shelved the book after one such scene.
@solvrn Lol. I feel so lazy for not posting the spoiler review yet! I'm vacationing right now, but I'll try my best to get that review posted when I get back home in a few weeks. And yes, around the first 200 pages was when I ran into the first unrealistic (imo) scene. Thankfully there's a lot of good things about the book to balance out the frustrating (most) moments. Hope you enjoy the book.
I was surprised at how Barbie turned out. In most of King's books (the ones I've read anyway), the military is usually the enemy (especially in The Stand). I would say that Barbie is my favorite character and my least favorite character is Big Jim with Junior being a close second.
he was originally i heard from an interview going to have it be over the span for an entire year and i think that wouldve been great even though i havent read this book i had read salems lot and in that book he definitely doesnt have as many characters but it does revolve around the whole town and i love it when stephen king does books with an assortment of charcters im reading the stand at the moment and really enjoy amount of characters hes introduced so far
Really? That's interesting. I would have loved to see the book span for an entire year.
I haven't read Salem's Lot or The Stand (yet), but I have read IT (reviews will be up soon if you're interested) and that book also has a large cast that revolves around a town. I think he pulled it off far better on that book than Under the Dome, but, like I said, I still liked Under the Dome quite a bit. :)
And thanks for your compliment on the review. Glad you enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed the first part of the book for the most part (the first 200 pgs included); you're right, there are moments that make it difficult to set the book down -- but the story takes a turn (for the worst, imo) at one point, and from there grew a lot of the problems I had with the it. I'd love to know what you thought of it when you complete it. It's interesting to see other reader opinions.
@ThePOKERDEALER I see where you're coming from, and you're right in many ways, but, to me, it just didn't come across smoothly in the book. If there were to be chaos within an hour, there should be chaos the entire time. But it seemed to me that people were more or less acting calm and civilized almost from the start--then suddenly random events start happening. It felt disjointed and at times rushed. But this is just my opinion, of course.Btw, have you read the book? Did you like it?
Great review. i finished the book today and it was great. i think they should have made the duriation much longer. i think you should also do a review for IT
@GRIZZDIPPERCHUNG I agree with you. In fact, I think many people -- including those who loved the book more than I did -- would admit that the duration should have been much longer. It would have been a good way to bypass the questionable decisions many of the characters make.
And funny you mention "IT"; I'm actually reading it right now, lol. And I'd love to do a review on it when I'm finished. Thanks for commenting! Glad you enjoyed the book. :)
While I own it, I haven't read "Misery" yet, but I'm looking forward to reading it sometime after i finish some others that are a little higher on my "must read" list, hehe. I agree about the ending. Seemed kinda rushed.
You hit the nail on the head. If everyone were trapped under the dome for at least a month (longer would have been even better, I think), the chaotic and silly events that took place would have been far easier to swallow. That's definitely something I'd want to get into on the other review (gotta stop procrastinating to post it), thanks for clearing it up. I felt the impact the dome had on the environment, for sure, but not necessarily the people.
I actually only read it since it sounded like the Simpsons XD
