The big bang is perhaps the strongest evidence for the existence of God in all of natural theology. Evolution, though the evidence isn't totally there, is not bad either-- for physical laws must be fined tuned to a razor's edge in order for molecules to stick together for evolution to happen. im glad science exists. the thing is, science confirms the authority of the bible, however as in the garden of eden, people have a choice to make. They can see the facts and interpret them in a manner to explain that God does not exist or they can see how it all truely makes sense.

Thanks for your questions. The reasons behind my de-conversion are complicated which I won't go into here. Being an atheist does not mean "I believe there is no God", rather it means "I lack a belief in God". Therefore atheism is not a religion. Science does not require belief, merely consideration of the evidence. I don't claim the universe came from nothing, but I certainly see no reason to suppose that an infinitely complicated deity created everything. That is an unnecessary assumption.
Please let me say, that if it was some people or a person that did something or let you down. Don't let that be your reason, people even Christians are going to let you down and some are even going to do you wrong. We should look to Jesus, he is the only perfect one.

Science is constantly searching for the answers, but I agree that we may never discover the answer to where the universe came from. What I appreciate about science though is the honesty and objectivity behind it. Science never claims an answer for which there is no evidence, plus science changes its opinion according to new evidence. This is the direct opposite of religion. Just because I do not know the answer to a question, does not mean I can force myself to believe a fabricated solution.
With respect to my de-conversion, I more or less had an epiphany regarding my own intellectual honesty on the topic of faith and religion. Wishing something were true does nothing to bring that thing into reality. If that thing were reality, how would one know without evidence? Never again will I be swayed by vague assertions. That animation he showed was made by scientists to demonstrate how mazing astronomy is. Yet another case of Christians using scientific material to further their own propaganda. The irony is that these same Christians are often against science being taught to our children. Their two-faced nature is despicable.

Dishonest? I guess if Giglio secretly believes that God has nothing to do with the universe, then, yes, he is being dishonest here. I get that you don't believe that God or "religion" has anything to do with it, but surely one who believes otherwise needn't be chastised for standing in awe of the natural world that (he believes) God created. I understand your point in that there are different responses to the same material, and I respect that. I do however object to people such as Giglio exploiting such material to invoke a specific response from his audience. I see that as pure manipulation. He portrays it almost as proof of God. It is easy to "wow" the public with astronomy because the numbers/sizes involved are bigger than most people's comprehension. This is why astronomy is so often used by Christians to show "how big God is".
That is not manipulation. He is simply telling the TRUTH. But, I guess us humans don't want to admit that our mind is limited, and God is infinite. And, it does portray the proof of God. its AMAZING! Firstly, the Theory of Evolution is not Darwinism any more than the Theory of Relativity is Einsteinism. Secondly, the Theory of Evolution has nothing to say about the origin of the universe and certainly does not talk about "the universe coming out of nothing". Thirdly, modern cosmological and evolutionary theories provide the best explanation for the observed evidence. If you think the scientific process is biased, you need to read more about the scientific method my friend!
Incidentally, the only reason Christians say scientists are biased is because (a) as pointed out, they don't understand the scientific method, and (b) because scientists don't say "God did it!". If scientists all of a sudden stated that all the evidence points to the Judeo-Christian God being the author of all creation, then all those claims of scientists being biased would magically disappear. Christians need to take a good hard look at themselves and see who the REAL biased people are.
Actually scientists use evidence to do science. Whether you believe the universe to display the wonders of [insert your favourite deity here] is irrelevant to science. Animations like the one Giglio showed have been produced to show how amazing the universe is and to inspire young minds, not to provide free publicity for god(s) and religion.
If you have evidence that God created, then I suggest you write it up as a publication, submit to a peer-reviewed journal, then win the Nobel prize. And just so you know, the definition of religion is a "system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith", so to say that Giglio isn't publicizing religion is to say that (a) Giglio is only pretending to be a Christian, and (b) you haven't actually watched the video.
Louie isn't publicing a religion, he is publicing how amazing God is, and Christianity is not a religion, no matter what kind of definition it has. A Christian is someone who believes that Jesus Christ died for us, was buried, and rose again by the glory of God. Christianity is about a personal relationship with your Creator and Savior, not just a system of beliefs. That is what seperates Christianity from all of the "religions."
And I do have evidence that God created, look outside your window. Creation is just one proof of God's exsistence. Look at yourself, look at how intricate your body is, and how God designed you and formed you, and look at how your fingerprints are completly different that the any of the billions of people in this world.

As I said, submit your evidence to a peer-reviewed journal and collect your Nobel prize if it is so compelling. I think you and I have a different idea of what constitutes *evidence*.

There are beautiful scientific explanations for the examples you gave. I'm afraid saying "God did it!" cannot be verified or tested according to these standards.
ok, the scientific method is based on observation, the gathering of data, hypothesizing and deductions. So no, it is impossible to prove God or Jesus scientifically. Just like it is impossible to prove scientifically that George Washington lived. Or that Christ was raised from the dead, or that Martin Luther King was a civil rights leader. These are out of the realm of scientific proof. But I can prove that God exists historically, with archealogical evidence.
You are equating the proof that God exists with the proof that George Washington lived. Did I read that right? There is an overwhelming amounts of documentation supporting Washington's existence, including items he owned and portraits. A couple of scrolls written 2000 years ago doesn't compare. What I was saying was that you cannot prove that George Washington lived-scientifically. There have been more manuscripts found of the New testement than any other book. There are more than 5,300 known Greek manuscripts, over 10,000 Latin Vulgate and at least 9,300 other early versions and we have more than 24,000 manuscript copies of portions of the New Testament in existence. Not just a couple of scrolls.
That would be compelling if the volume of documents you mention were each independent accounts. Rather they are copies of copies of copies (ad nauseum) of the originals (which we don't have). I suggest you read "Misquoting Jesus" by Bart Erhman. We have no writings by Jesus, no first person accounts (all third person), the earliest writings begin 40 years after his alleged death, no portraits, and no remains. We have all these things for George Washington however.
Did you not read what i wrote? I know that you can prove George Washington historically, what i said was that you cannot prove that George Washington ever existed scientifically. I suggest you read "A Ready Defense" by Josh McDowell, or anything by Josh McDowell. And there were also more than 500 witnesses that saw Jesus after he had been crucified, and gave an account for it. And the funny thing about all of those copies is that they all say the same thing.
We have moved well away from science into history, so the issue of scientific proof is irrelevant. However, you were the one who equated the proof of Jesus's existence to that of Washington. The evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of Washington. I have read McDowell's work and the fundamental flaw is that he simply proves the Bible exists, not God. Paul stating in 2 Corinthians that 500 people saw Jesus post-crucifixion is unreliable at best since Paul wasn't actually there!

the accounts of the books of Matthew, Mark and John are all primary sources, being that they were there with Jesus all throughout his ministry and personally witnessed these events. they were simply written a while after the events had taken place. they were written in third person so as to not focus on themselves but on the person of Jesus of Nazareth the Christ. "Luke," however is a compilation of primary sources. we don't have remains because Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven

Yeah, you're right, I didn't word that right. But Christianity is the freedom from religion. If you look at any religion, it is all about works, or as you said, the boring stuff. But that's what is so amazing about God. He gave us His Son, so that we wouldn't have to do all the boring stuff. It is a result of our relationship with Christ that makes us want to do works for Him. But our works is not what gets us to heaven. And just a random question, have you read any of the Bible?
What I realize is that Christianity meets virtually every definition of the word "religion" since it is based upon a system of beliefs. How could morality stem from Christianity (as is claimed) if this were not true? The argument for Christianity not being a religion is the same as saying that Buddhism and various New Age or metaphysical paradigms are not religions (which they are).
I know what you're saying, and I get you, that Christianity is a set of beliefs, which is a religion. So you are right, but when i say freedom from religion, i'm talking about the freedom from all of the things that you have to do to earn God. So i'm sorry, i should have made myself clearer.
On the contrary, you still have some clarity work ahead of you. It seems to me that you're saying that you have freedom from one set of rules to follow another set of rules? The New Testament is not shy of stating the way things are. Paul the Apostle wrote several letters to the churches of the time which laid down the law, so to speak.
Paul is the one who talks about freedom from religion. The freedom is God's forgivness and grace. We still should follow God's rules and commandments, but even if we don't do it God forgives us. He forgives us because Jesus took our sin on Himself when He died on the cross. We are not bound to the law and our sin as we were before. That is freedom.
Sounds more like dumping our crimes on a scape-goat to me. That's not redemption, that's simply transferring blame. I prefer a situation where each person takes responsibility for their actions. True freedom is making right decisions for oneself, rather than relying on a big brother system to tell you what to do.

I actually honestly appreciate this sentiment. Though we disagree on fundamental issues regarding religion, we can at least agree that we're both seeking the truth.

That's two questions. The answer to the first is extremely lengthy. I suggest you search for "History of Scientific Method" on wikipedia for a detailed response. The answer to the second question is that science exists to allow a systematic method by which which we can evaluate and understand the physical world.
You know it is really sad that GOD has to keep trying to prove himself OVER AND OVER He DOES NOT HAVE to, for he IS GOD. But he loves his stubborn creation just as an earthly father loves his wayward child. Believe it OR not...our CHOICE....but it still does not change the facts or the TRUTH.

Yeah... pretending some conglomeration of various ancient mythologies is the "first cause" actually is a ridiculous thing to do. Actual astronomy and cosmology are so much more interesting than your myths and fairy tales.
Not even historians will debate the life of Jesus Christ. It is fact that he walked this Earth. I'd like to know how that fits in to ancient mythologies. Christianity is different my friend, I hope you do some research.
It's funny how Christians can't imagine that everything came from nothing but they can believe that everything (God) , always existed. ?? What is God made of then? pepsiprincess, i know that you have good motives in what you say, but I'm begging you not to be ignorant! The big bang is NOT bad! The big bang is perhaps the strongest evidence for the existence of God in all of natural theology. Evolution, though the evidence isn't totally there, is not bad either-- for physical laws must be fined tuned to a razor's edge in order for molecules to stick together for evolution to happen. Just take that into account, please :) peace!

I not too long ago had to leave home to go on a business trip for some time. I left behind a sweater that I wore all the time. On my return my wife told me that she fell asleep in that sweater almost every night. Why?

There is God. One reason. Design. Look at the world, could a human, evolution, or chance have created this vast and beautiful universe? We have 60,000 miles of blood vessels in each of our bodies. why would that make John 14:6 untrue? "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" This means Jesus is the only way to God, but Jesus is God and Jesus showed mercy to me while i rejected him.

Romans 5:10 "For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"

Incorrect. Jesus showed mercy to you after you *accepted* him. Whilst you are still in the rejection category, you're still in the express-elevator to hell I'm afraid, or so the claim goes. It is true that Jesus died for sinners (who else?), but one is unable to cash in the benefits of that sacrifice without repentance. Just to be clear, read again SamDiche's comment. He is clearly talking about the unsaved. The "mercy" God will have on the unsaved is pretty well summed up in Matthew 25:41.

Thanks for your questions. The reasons behind my de-conversion are complicated which I won't go into here. Being an atheist does not mean "I believe there is no God", rather it means "I lack a belief in God". Therefore atheism is not a religion. Science does not require belief, merely consideration of the evidence. I don't claim the universe came from nothing, but I certainly see no reason to suppose that an infinitely complicated deity created everything. That is an unnecessary assumption.

Science is constantly searching for the answers, but I agree that we may never discover the answer to where the universe came from. What I appreciate about science though is the honesty and objectivity behind it. Science never claims an answer for which there is no evidence, plus science changes its opinion according to new evidence. This is the direct opposite of religion. Just because I do not know the answer to a question, does not mean I can force myself to believe a fabricated solution.

With respect to my de-conversion, I more or less had an epiphany regarding my own intellectual honesty on the topic of faith and religion. Wishing something were true does nothing to bring that thing into reality. If that thing were reality, how would one know without evidence? Never again will I be swayed by vague assertions. That animation he showed was made by scientists to demonstrate how mazing astronomy is. Yet another case of Christians using scientific material to further their own propaganda. The irony is that these same Christians are often against science being taught to our children. Their two-faced nature is despicable.

I'm afraid people like Giglio only respect science so far as its potential to demonstrate "the glory of God". I don't expect him to throw up any pictures of the fossil record to achieve the same purpose anytime soon. The animation he showed is indeed amazing (I helped create it), but religion does not play a role here. In the words of Laplace: "I have no need for that hypothesis". And you're right, I do have an agenda - intellectual honesty.

Dishonest? I guess if Giglio secretly believes that God has nothing to do with the universe, then, yes, he is being dishonest here. I get that you don't believe that God or "religion" has anything to do with it, but surely one who believes otherwise needn't be chastised for standing in awe of the natural world that (he believes) God created. His awe is not the same as your awe, but there is nothing essentially dishonest about his while yours is presumably pure and unbiased.

I understand your point in that there are different responses to the same material, and I respect that. I do however object to people such as Giglio exploiting such material to invoke a specific response from his audience. I see that as pure manipulation. He portrays it almost as proof of God. It is easy to "wow" the public with astronomy because the numbers/sizes involved are bigger than most people's comprehension. This is why astronomy is so often used by Christians to show "how big God is".

That is not manipulation. He is simply telling the TRUTH. But, I guess us humans don't want to admit that our mind is limited, and God is infinite. And, it does portray the proof of God. its AMAZING! And besides, science didn't create all this. Their the ones trying to steal the credit of God's work.

Scientists are the first to admit that knowledge is limited. If that were not so, we'd be out of a job. I'm sorry, but science DID create this animation. You might want to check the credits. So one star star being bigger than another star is proof of God, huh? I have a bridge to sell you call the Brooklyn. Typical Christian: just because you don't understand it, therefore it MUST be God. You're assuming the Judeo-Christian God of course, for no other reason that it happens to be your religion.

Scientists acknowledging that knowledge is limited is a tricky issue. You're painting with very broad strokes my friend!
Just check out our public school system here in America.
It's as if the only thing to learn is Darwinism and the universe coming out of nothing. Yeah our knowledge is limited.. that's easy! But it doesn't help that the scientific establishment further limits that knowledge through outright bias.

Firstly, the Theory of Evolution is not Darwinism any more than the Theory of Relativity is Einsteinism. Secondly, the Theory of Evolution has nothing to say about the origin of the universe and certainly does not talk about "the universe coming out of nothing". Thirdly, modern cosmological and evolutionary theories provide the best explanation for the observed evidence. If you think the scientific process is biased, you need to read more about the scientific method my friend!

Incidentally, the only reason Christians say scientists are biased is because (a) as pointed out, they don't understand the scientific method, and (b) because scientists don't say "God did it!". If scientists all of a sudden stated that all the evidence points to the Judeo-Christian God being the author of all creation, then all those claims of scientists being biased would magically disappear. Christians need to take a good hard look at themselves and see who the REAL biased people are.

Actually scientists use evidence to do science. Whether you believe the universe to display the wonders of [insert your favourite deity here] is irrelevant to science. Animations like the one Giglio showed have been produced to show how amazing the universe is and to inspire young minds, not to provide free publicity for god(s) and religion.

If you have evidence that God created, then I suggest you write it up as a publication, submit to a peer-reviewed journal, then win the Nobel prize. And just so you know, the definition of religion is a "system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith", so to say that Giglio isn't publicizing religion is to say that (a) Giglio is only pretending to be a Christian, and (b) you haven't actually watched the video.

Louie isn't publicing a religion, he is publicing how amazing God is, and Christianity is not a religion, no matter what kind of definition it has. A Christian is someone who believes that Jesus Christ died for us, was buried, and rose again by the glory of God. Christianity is about a personal relationship with your Creator and Savior, not just a system of beliefs. That is what seperates Christianity from all of the "religions."

And I do have evidence that God created, look outside your window. Creation is just one proof of God's exsistence. Look at yourself, look at how intricate your body is, and how God designed you and formed you, and look at how your fingerprints are completly different that the any of the billions of people in this world.

Yes, it's called biology, geology, astronomy, etc. The God hypothesis is not required to explain and understand these things. As I said, submit your evidence to a peer-reviewed journal and collect your Nobel prize if it is so compelling. I think you and I have a different idea of what constitutes *evidence*.

I refer you to the wikipedia page on "scientific evidence". For example "evidence is expected to be empirical and properly documented in accordance with scientific method". There are beautiful scientific explanations for the examples you gave. I'm afraid saying "God did it!" cannot be verified or tested according to these standards.

ok, the scientific method is based on observation, the gathering of data, hypothesizing and deductions. So no, it is impossible to prove God or Jesus scientifically. Just like it is impossible to prove scientifically that George Washington lived. Or that Christ was raised from the dead, or that Martin Luther King was a civil rights leader. These are out of the realm of scientific proof. But I can prove that God exists historically, with archealogical evidence.

You are equating the proof that God exists with the proof that George Washington lived. Did I read that right? There is an overwhelming amounts of documentation supporting Washington's existence, including items he owned and portraits. A couple of scrolls written 2000 years ago doesn't compare. Go ahead and submit your proof that "God exists historically, with archealogical evidence". I look forward to seeing your Nobel prize win on the news.

What I was saying was that you cannot prove that George Washington lived-scientifically. There have been more manuscripts found of the New testement than any other book. There are more than 5,300 known Greek manuscripts, over 10,000 Latin Vulgate and at least 9,300 other early versions and we have more than 24,000 manuscript copies of portions of the New Testament in existence. Not just a couple of scrolls.

That would be compelling if the volume of documents you mention were each independent accounts. Rather they are copies of copies of copies (ad nauseum) of the originals (which we don't have). I suggest you read "Misquoting Jesus" by Bart Erhman. We have no writings by Jesus, no first person accounts (all third person), the earliest writings begin 40 years after his alleged death, no portraits, and no remains. We have all these things for George Washington however.

Did you not read what i wrote? I know that you can prove George Washington historically, what i said was that you cannot prove that George Washington ever existed scientifically. I suggest you read "A Ready Defense" by Josh McDowell, or anything by Josh McDowell. And there were also more than 500 witnesses that saw Jesus after he had been crucified, and gave an account for it. And the funny thing about all of those copies is that they all say the same thing.

We have moved well away from science into history, so the issue of scientific proof is irrelevant. However, you were the one who equated the proof of Jesus's existence to that of Washington. The evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of Washington. I have read McDowell's work and the fundamental flaw is that he simply proves the Bible exists, not God. Paul stating in 2 Corinthians that 500 people saw Jesus post-crucifixion is unreliable at best since Paul wasn't actually there!

Just forget that I even said that about George Washington because you still do not understand what my point was with that. And Josh McDowell proving that the Bible is real and speaks truth, is proving that there is a God and proving that everything else i have said is right because it is from the Bible, so you just completly contridicted yourself, if you just stated that the Bible is 100% real.

I perfectly understood what your failed point with Washington was, but now who is misunderstanding? I said McDowell proves that the Bible *exists*, not that it's *true*. LOL! Talk about misquoting. The Koran also exists. What you are saying is that the Bible is true because God is real, and that God is real because the Bible is true. I am very familiar with these circular arguments, such as those used by McDowell.

Obviously you didn't understand my point because it was not failed. And yeah anyone can prove that the Bible exists, walk into any bookstore, and it's there. Josh Mcdowell proves that the Bible is true. And i agree with you that kind of argument gets no where and proves nothing. All I am saying is that he proves that the Bible is real and true, so God is real and true. Not the other way around.And I am glad that we can i guess agree to disagree because neither of us is going to change our minds.

the accounts of the books of Matthew, Mark and John are all primary sources, being that they were there with Jesus all throughout his ministry and personally witnessed these events. they were simply written a while after the events had taken place. they were written in third person so as to not focus on themselves but on the person of Jesus of Nazareth the Christ. "Luke," however is a compilation of primary sources. we don't have remains because Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven

You say it is "not just a system of beliefs", but yet you just admitted that there is indeed such a system. Therefore it is a religion. The old "I'm not religious, I just love God!" line in simply meant to stop people from thinking Christianity is boring and stuffy. I totally understand that desire, but it just ain't true. Stop being hung-up about being religious - it really is counter-productive. Bottom line: Giglio publicing the Abrahamic religion of Christianity.

Yeah, you're right, I didn't word that right. But Christianity is the freedom from religion. If you look at any religion, it is all about works, or as you said, the boring stuff. But that's what is so amazing about God. He gave us His Son, so that we wouldn't have to do all the boring stuff. It is a result of our relationship with Christ that makes us want to do works for Him. But our works is not what gets us to heaven. And just a random question, have you read any of the Bible?

What I realize is that Christianity meets virtually every definition of the word "religion" since it is based upon a system of beliefs. How could morality stem from Christianity (as is claimed) if this were not true? The argument for Christianity not being a religion is the same as saying that Buddhism and various New Age or metaphysical paradigms are not religions (which they are).

I know what you're saying, and I get you, that Christianity is a set of beliefs, which is a religion. So you are right, but when i say freedom from religion, i'm talking about the freedom from all of the things that you have to do to earn God. So i'm sorry, i should have made myself clearer.

On the contrary, you still have some clarity work ahead of you. It seems to me that you're saying that you have freedom from one set of rules to follow another set of rules? The New Testament is not shy of stating the way things are. Paul the Apostle wrote several letters to the churches of the time which laid down the law, so to speak.

Paul is the one who talks about freedom from religion. The freedom is God's forgivness and grace. We still should follow God's rules and commandments, but even if we don't do it God forgives us. He forgives us because Jesus took our sin on Himself when He died on the cross. We are not bound to the law and our sin as we were before. That is freedom.

Sounds more like dumping our crimes on a scape-goat to me. That's not redemption, that's simply transferring blame. I prefer a situation where each person takes responsibility for their actions. True freedom is making right decisions for oneself, rather than relying on a big brother system to tell you what to do.

That's two questions. The answer to the first is extremely lengthy. I suggest you search for "History of Scientific Method" on wikipedia for a detailed response. The answer to the second question is that science exists to allow a systematic method by which which we can evaluate and understand the physical world.

Yeah... pretending some conglomeration of various ancient mythologies is the "first cause" actually is a ridiculous thing to do. Actual astronomy and cosmology are so much more interesting than your myths and fairy tales.

Not even historians will debate the life of Jesus Christ. It is fact that he walked this Earth. I'd like to know how that fits in to ancient mythologies. Christianity is different my friend, I hope you do some research.
