Quoted from wiki, the writer was inspired by Wuthering Height to compose the song. He compared the song to 'Heathcliff digging up Cathy's corpse and dancing with it in the cold moonlight'. The song can now be appreciated in the spirit which it was originally intended .
I first heard this on Radio 1 with Steve Wright in 1989 and he predicted it to be a No1 single... however, it reached No 61! But this is by far the better version. My Daughter is 11 & has this version on her iPod! I just love it.
I know this is the orginal before Celine did this.....and yes I do like what I hear...but just imagine had Bonnie Tyler did this.....I think it would have been just as epic as Total Eclipse!!!
This is original and only rightly version of that song. Celine's version is worse (missed electric guitars and that great solo) but still OK. Meat Loaf's with Marion Raven is completely different (recoreded for new) and IMHO worst. Pandora's Box was original artist who recorded and performed that song. Celine's version is very similar but lack od that guitar solo was an inattentiveness. Probably know, why cut guitar solos from single edits?
There is a sin shop in my home town called Pandora's Box. That's what I am thinking about. This song is fantastic no matter who sings it. I am in love with Celine's voice. I have always loved Meatloaf, and even this is great! Originals are usually the best though.
Jim Steinman is my all-time favorite musical mad genius. All the harmonies are perfect...hmm, that might be why I love his music with Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler.
I remember buying this album when it first came out I always thought it was underrated I loved it then Jim Steinman is a brilliant song writer. thx for the posts great to listen again
I like Pandora's and Celine's versions, but I prefer Meatloaf's. Celine is technical, but it doesn't have the passion of Meatloaf's version and Pandora's is somewhere in between, but the arrangement of the music (somewhere in the middle) just gets on my nerves after a while; loudness doesn't imply passion. The words are very powerful coming from a man though IMO. Just my opinion. No matter what version, it's a beautiful song.
I have just heard this version and as a committed Meatloaf fan (as you may have guessed by my screen name!) I have to admit - (sorry) this version is even BETTER than his. The female vocals have a perfect blend of Celine dions tone and Meats power - never thought that it was possible,AWESOME!!!
The buildup from 5:20 til the absolute explosion at 5:55 is the best part of the song, the emotional outpouring is amazing. By far the best version, and I'm an unabashed Meat Loaf fan
Jim Steinman's amazing. His lyrics for this is just brillant. An awesome masterpiece. This version's very good. I can't say which version I love the most. All of them are fantastic.
Steinman made a masterpiece out of this song. As far as female versions, I think I like this one the best, though Celine's version sounds very similar. Meat Loaf's version was good to, and it was very different. It also had a great video to go with it.
Defo my favourite version of this song. I dunno why, but Celine's voice irritates the hell out of me, and Meat's Version was ruined by that random bitch wailing nasally all over the song. Completely took away from the sheer power this original version has.
I definitely prefer Celine's version over the other two. I just feel she's the only singer who has the power to deliver a song like this. When you listen to hers and then this one Elaine's voice seems very weak indeed. Plus I'm not a fan of electric element to this song.
This (brilliant) song was actually intended for Steinman's musical opus "Neverland" which is his take on the Peter Pan story. It's supposed to be Wendy singing to Pan when he returns to Neverland. When you listen to the lyrics they make a lot of sense in the context of that story.
all these song were out before bat 2 was even thought about,BAD FOR GOOD album, done by steinman and ORIGINAL SIN , done by steinman and 4 girls that all have done meat loaf albums aswell, all these tracks were done long before bat 2,and are brillllllllllllll
One of the things I love about Jim Steinman's lyrics, is that occasionally he writes a line that is so powerful it knocks the breath right out of you, almost like a punch to the gut. "There were those empty threats and hollow lies And whenever you tried to hurt me I just hurt you even worse And so much deeper There were hours that just went on for days When alone at last, we'd count up all the chances That were lost to us Forever" Those lines just leave me feeling bruised and baffled inside.
Okay folks, let's settle this "All Coming Back" issue. Jim wrote the song in the late Eighties, which is about when the Bat II project began. It was one of many songs he sent to Meat Loaf to hear the kind of stuff he was now writing, to give him an idea of what the album would sound like. He NEVER intended for Meat to sing it, regardless of what Meat must have assumed from the demo being sent to him. Meat Loaf first attempted to record the song in 1995, and Steinman stopped him with a lawsuit.
@secondeagle Steinman's stated reason in the injunction to keep Meat Loaf from recording it was that the song was intended for a female voice. The only reason Meat Loaf was able to get it back for Bat III was because the song had already been released in the U.S. at that point and he no longer needed Jim's permission to record it; he could just pay licensing fees to the publisher.
I do have to point out, because it's driving me *crazy*...I don't know where Jim S. got the idea that Heathcliff dug up Catherine's corpse and danced with it. I'm an obsessive Wuthering Heights fan...I've read the book over twenty times. That does not happen in the book. There are two scenes where Heathcliff disturbs Cathy's grave- the first time he doesn't open the coffin, and the second time he opens it and looks at her, but doesn't touch her. I just HAD to point that out. Lol.
@Jess0062 I know, I thought that was kind of weird, I've read it twice through and many times I've reread parts... it's strange. Also, I don't think this song is as dark as Steinman says it is - he claims it's darker than Kate Bush's song, but I don't think so. And Total Eclipse is darker than this too.
This is a great version, though I would have to say my favorite version is the Meatloaf version. No disrespect to Celine Dion, but both of these versions blow her version out of the water. It's just too plastic and unfeeling compared to these two emotion-filled versions. They're just electric. Love love love them. Thank you, Jim Steinman, for a wonderful song!
Jim Steinman originally wrote this song for meat loaf, but they fell out before Jim got a chance to give it to him, so Jim gave the song to an all girl band, called Pandora's Box to piss meat loaf off. They claimed the song as their own.
Years later, meat loaf claimed the song back for his debute album Bat Out Of Hell 3. Celine dion's version of this song is so lame, bless her. lolshe doesn't have the raw power and screaming guitars like Pandora's Box does.
I think Jim steinman would have taken up the great opportunity for his song to go into the charts, as the music industry was changing then, and celine dion was big in the charts then (I don't know music history, about that girl) but I bet he cursed the day, when he heard celine dion's version of his song on the radio. I would die too!! lol!
What many Celine Dion fans don't understand is the same thing that made Jim Steinman's Bad for Good album superb. That raw energy. We want music with meaning and feeling not some finely polished version Celine released just to top charts!
She was a member of Pandora's Box and sang lead vocals on the songs The Invocation, Twentieth Century Fox, My Little Red Book and shared the majority of the vocals on Original Sin with Gina Taylor.
So sorry if I was wrong I checked on Pandoras box website before i posted that and did not see Ellen in the Lineup. Don't get me wrong I do like Ellen Foley I have 2 of her albums on vinyl
@slidewithme Actually, I prefer Meatloaf. He'd practically begged Steinman to let him perform it for years but Steinman saw it as a "woman's song" ... He was wrong. I like this version too. Anybody but Celine Dion.
First version i ever heard of this song, first time i ever knew who actually was behind such an amazing version. No more will i have to resort for off key duets and terrifying screeching off English renditions.

Its inspired by Wuthering Heights, the novel by Emily Bronte. In particular the scene where Heathcliffe digs up Cathy's corpse and dances with it under the moonlight. Read it and it will bring new meaning to the song.

I love all of the comments regarding Celine vs Meat vs Pandora's Box, but the credit goes to the great Jim Steinman! Awesome and very underrated as a songwriter. What a storyteller! Thanks for posting this! Great!
Great song from a very underated album, and shamefully ignored on its original release. What this version has in its favour is the great guitar solos missing from the loaf and dion versions, though those have got slightly stronger vocals, all 3 are worthy of acclaim as each artist puts there own unique mark on it.
i never know that celine dion do the cover for this song. but i love all the cover, from pandora's box, celine dion and meatloaf with marion raven. thanx 4 posting.
i`m a great meatloaf fan but this is still the best version from a great album , does anyone have the banned vid to this by Ken Russell ? i have a third of it on an old format you may not have heard of VHS tape lol
One of the best albums ever made. Pity it was not a great success. But it has like wayof north states produced masif hits for other artists who do not come anywhere near the same quality as this LP
Thanks for posting this and other songs from this album! This album never sold much, but the music from it has sold millions of millions by other artists and in musicals world wide...but this is where it came from...

What this version has in its favour is the great guitar solos missing from the loaf and dion versions, though those have got slightly stronger vocals, all 3 are worthy of acclaim as each artist puts there own unique mark on it.

i`m a great meatloaf fan but this is still the best version from a great album , does anyone have the banned vid to this by Ken Russell ? i have a third of it on an old format you may not have heard of VHS tape lol

There's a video on Youtube for this, and I *think* it's the banned one. Very S&M/strange, right?

One of the best albums ever made. Pity it was not a great success. But it has like wayof north states produced masif hits for other artists who do not come anywhere near the same quality as this LP

This doesn't sound too different from Celine Dion's cover version. It's a treat to hear this one.

I was thinking the same thing. Especially the beginning.
