i don't give a single fuck about the gayness of this album, i don't like the vocals but i have to admit that this kick ass. Btw, this would never be as "gay" as some shit on mtv nowadays...
I don't get the complaints for the vocals, they sound just fine to me, kinda like a cross beween Mark Slaughter and King Diamond. I think this is a pretty catchy album actually.
Music is cool 80s metal. Vocals are awful. Axl Rose getting anally probed is the best way to describe it. Why he thought that was a good way to sing is beyond everybody...
I remember when this came out. A couple friends of mine and I who were really into Discharge were just dumbfounded. You could kind of see it coming with the EPs between "Hear Nothing" and this, but as soon as we heard Cal singing like this, we were like, "fuck, it's over..."
Musically, this is an average Heavy / Glam album. Seriously, some nice riffs, good rythmics, classic solos, but FUCK THAT VOICE. This is absolutely bad and disgusting, it ruins all the album. As they titled one of their releases : " WHY ? "
If this wasn't a Discharge record and you heard it, I bet you'd like it better. When this came out my friend, who was into metal and I, who was into punk, sat and listened to it a couple times. Then discussed.

This doesn't sound like Discharge at all. It sounds more like one of those Euro-metal bands who thought ripping off Judas Priest and Helloween was a good idea. Nah sorry lads, this sucks.
Now I remember the voice - a Farinelli type of guy is shouting (there are those who like that - I don't!) Moreover, the lead guitar parts are completely superflous! So, it would be have been a nice instrumental...
I saw Discharge on this tour and whilst musically, it's pretty good (in retrospect) the vocals are just not Discahrge and it was pushing it at the time to expect people to turn up expecting this, hence people booing and throwing stuff. Sounds very like Trouble to me (who i like)
using "gay" as an insult simply shows that many of you guys never really understood the political message of discharge. even when this album is their worst , homophobia sucks! so, back to your bad metal band full of masculine heroes.
I bet this wouldnt be as reviled as it is if Cal had at least stuck the singing style he did on previous albums, or at least with the Ignorance single.
the instrumental work is great. but i think the album, as a whole, would've sounded better if cal went back to his original gruff vocals, or his earlier singing vocals. however, i do think that people get way too butt-hurt whenever an artist they like try something new. for me, as long as they don't pull a st. anger, i'm willing to give an artist's newer material a shot.
but it grows on you, i discovered discharge on this album, i like the old stuff too but this album was good. sort of a punk king diamond, i like it, dont care what u say!
It was only their American label, Rock Hotel Records, that really accepted the album for what it was. They even managed to get the band covered in the very pages of Metal Edge Magazine (US), which then catered exclusively to the likes of Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, & Ratt. Of course the tour in support of the album was a complete disaster with Cal refusing to play any old songs.
To consider this album commercial & a sell-out is asinine. For Discharge to release this record was nothing short of commercial suicide. Cal’s vocals appealed to no one with the exception of himself. To try & reach a wider audience with that vocal style is plain ignorance. No one outside their already established fan base gave a flying fuck when “Grave New World” was released. The fans loathed it and the press ripped it mercilessly.
P.S. Rocky Shades was rehearsing with Discharge after Cal had left & was offered the job. Kerrang even published a promo photo with him & the “G.N.W.” touring line-up (sans Cal) but nothing ever materialized. Classic Merseyside Punk Fanzine “Phoenix From The Crypt” published an interview with Steven “Fish” Brooks were he spilled the beans on the entire “G.N.W.” episode. At that point in time they were considering re-recording the vocal parts with a new singer and then re-release the album.
The only thing even remotely reminiscent of a Glam element would be the image of the touring line-up. As I’ve said in earlier commentary they look just like the Sisters of Mercy, no big deal as far as I‘m concerned. The fact that we’re still debating this album 24 years after its release just shows you what an amazing impact Discharge’s music has made thru 30 years of existence, nuff said!
Yes, “The Downward Spiral” is pretentious crap and a waste of vinyl. But the other six tracks sound nothing like the Glam merchants of the day, Motley Crue, Poison, or even the trash queens Wratchild for that matter. If the album had been issued with a real singer like the late & great Ray Gillen (Badlands), the fans still would have hated it. However, musically the album would probably have been considered a progressive rock record or something along those lines, by the press at least.
Rainy of course never toured for this record, he left on his own accord & was replaced by Nick Bushell, but as far as I know he never spoke out against it at the time. I’ve read, as well as listened to interviews by the current line-up of Discharge, and they all blame Cal. I agree that the vocals were a fuckin’ joke and that’s to put it mildly. However, as far as the actual music is concerned, there’s not one element of Glam Rock in it.
I find it laughable that Cal gets so much flak for this alleged Glam Rock album. When they began writing the songs for this record Rainy (original member) & Garry Maloney (member since “Never Again”) as well as Mike Stone (producer/record label ceo/manager) were all present. I am hard pressed to believe that he was solely responsible for the musical direction on this album. If anybody involved in “Grave New World” found it to be that atrocious, why didn’t they speak up or leave the band!?
This album is hilarious. The songs make NO. SENSE. Some of the songs actually have a decent hard rock riff, but it's like they decided after they wrote the riff, "We'll just fill the rest of the song up with whatever and come back to the riff every now and then so it sounds like we put thought into the structure." The vocals don't even fit! Not only are they a gratingly poor imitation of King Diamond, Cal doesn't even try to form a melody or keep in time, so he just wails all over the place.
I liked the music on this album, but Cal's rat on helium vocals were hard to take. Plus, I hated all the guitarist's whammy bar tricks. Hate that shit.
Whatever the band wanted to accomplish when they composed this album is beyond me. Once they released “Warning” you knew they wanted to reach further musically. I remember this album being universally rejected at the time & the band was even interviewed by Metal Edge Magazine(US). Sonically they sound great but since Cal couldn’t sing worth of shit it was all 4 nothing. Had he sang somewhere between “Warning” & “Ignorance” it’d been ok. Where was Rocky Shades when we really needed him, lol!?!?
I love this album, of course it's not as great as the earlier more HC shit, but the riffs are fantastic and the vocals are killer. The music strikes me as sounding like GISM.
You punks are known for circle-jerking each other's opinion, have at me, cunts!!
That's what makes the punk scene unique! We are quite content to wash our dirty laundry in public! It's all vile smiles in the otherworld of showbiz and golf with the president
The instrumentals are actually pretty good, but Cal sounds like an odd cross between Axl Rose and the falsetto in "Walk Like A Man".
Bad move on his part, if he had stuck to gruffer vocals he could easily have turned discharge into a VERY succesful metal band like Celtic Frost, Merciful Fate, or Venom.
When I say "Cal-era" I mean 1980-85 Discharge and the eponymous album of 2003. Though when I bought this album in 1987 I was disappointed and never bought Massacre Divine or Shooting up the World or any shite with that fat parasite singing for them now. If people can get Rage Against the Machine No.1 for Xmas I'm sure Discherge fans can do the same and get Cal back. When they played this in NY in 1986 members of Bad Brains and Agnostic Front caused a riot!!!!
@ukdk123 nothing cal is my fav singer i just heard that bad brains did that because they didnt agree with him being gay but im not sure if its true or anything
That is really unfair, Rat is no parasite! He is a small mammel with a family to feed. Like the riot by the way, earth shattering! At the Clarendon they nearly got lynched!
honestly it wouldnt be that completely terrible if it werent for the high pitched singing by Cal that almost sounds like hes mocking that style of singing
u all people bitch to much, look the riffs and and drums do not sound that bad, BUT Cal's voice is really horrible, he fucked the band during these times. and i say rat is in fact a good replacement cuz u dont want this clown with his horrible high pitch nonsence in the band again right?
Yeh, I don't see why this is supposed to be "glam". Its way different than their classic stuff, but still extreme, just different. Almost like Mercyful Fate meets Discharge. Its still Cal singing right? Pretty dynamic vocalist based on doing two 100% different, extreme, no one else sounds like it vocal styles in his career...
Cripes I must be the only punk fan of this CD...Having said that I went to the London gig at the Clarendon and got kicked out cos I threw my homemade Discharge hat on stage! Yeah real rebellion eh? I was disappointed That They played fuck all but this CD/LP!
ahh man no fucking way would sakevi try and sound like that. the M.A.N album is just more metal than the detestation, like the fancy guitar playing and shit. and well R.U.G is alright.
Why the hell aren't my replies to "robertwienerrocks" showing up on the screen? Fucking inadequate computer of mine, fucking inadequate commenting system of Youtube.
This record was GREAT. Just for the fact that it brought out all the closet fascists and their "that's not punk" crap.
Plus I think it rocks like hell. Saw them on this tour playing to a clueless HC audience that rioted. Because of different approach in music? The same douchebags that never called their congressman once where suddenly driven to violent action by metal guitar? Fuck them. I love this record.
what was he thinking with the vocals. i remember when it first come out. me the young punk got all excited run of the the record store only to get it home and...stand there open mouthed over the deck wondering what the fuck was this. this is the first time since then and it would be fine ...but the vocals make me cringe with embarrassment.
Album Grave New World was the end of Discharge evolution. That evolution began in 1984. with The More I See single, and continued with Ignorance in 1985. Then in 1996. arrived ''strange album'' Grave New World that many funs didn't like. But fans forgot that musicians are also humans and that they are not in same mood alway. Cal was heroin addict in time of Grave New World. Anyway, for me, Grave New World is great album, and I'm not joking.
this album is for fakepunx only \m/

@rrbh I'm sure rainy didn't need to be dragged. He was too into persian cats and drugs at the time
ukdk123 2 years ago
Weird you should say that , because the actual truth is that Rainy was in to Persian rugs .....and rats.
As for Cal, he was into preening and pouting and, in a delusional way launching himself as the Hanley version of Robert Plant.....

I remember when this was released thinking it sounded like the band Zebra!
mightyhighrocks 2 years ago
The instrumentals are actually pretty good, but Cal sounds like an odd cross between Axl Rose and the falsetto in "Walk Like A Man".
Bad move on his part, if he had stuck to gruffer vocals he could easily have turned discharge into a VERY succesful metal band like Celtic Frost, Merciful Fate, or Venom.
whitetrashoutlaw 2 years ago 2
Exactly! He should've kept his old signing style. Or at least the style from the Warning EP. The vocals of that album weren't that band.

Hm, the aspect of Discharge doing a glam album isn't so bad; its just the fact the songs on that album are shit...regardless of their genre!

I'm a massive Discharge (Cal-era) fan. You are a star for putting this on. What about "The Downward Spiral"?
randypan71 2 years ago
When I say "Cal-era" I mean 1980-85 Discharge and the eponymous album of 2003. Though when I bought this album in 1987 I was disappointed and never bought Massacre Divine or Shooting up the World or any shite with that fat parasite singing for them now. If people can get Rage Against the Machine No.1 for Xmas I'm sure Discherge fans can do the same and get Cal back. When they played this in NY in 1986 members of Bad Brains and Agnostic Front caused a riot!!!!
randypan71 2 years ago
@randypan71 bad brains dumped an ice chest on cal for being gay thats what i heard
histatimaniples 2 years ago
@histatimaniples Yeah, and look at HR now.....a drug addled , bible thumping ,burnt out lunatic.
rrbh 2 years ago
@histatimaniples and what's wrong with being gay exactly? Cal was/is a great voice thing. What's his sexuality got to do with it?
ukdk123 2 years ago
@ukdk123 nothing cal is my fav singer i just heard that bad brains did that because they didnt agree with him being gay but im not sure if its true or anything

That is really unfair, Rat is no parasite! He is a small mammel with a family to feed. Like the riot by the way, earth shattering! At the Clarendon they nearly got lynched!

@ukdk123 well if rat needs to feed a family he needs to share look at him!!!!

@histatimaniples Give the man a break...at least he still has some balls, unlike Mr Morris who was clearly looking for them on Massacre Divine!

u all people bitch to much, look the riffs and and drums do not sound that bad, BUT Cal's voice is really horrible, he fucked the band during these times. and i say rat is in fact a good replacement cuz u dont want this clown with his horrible high pitch nonsence in the band again right?
speednecromancer666 2 years ago
from what i was told cal was really into led zeppelin
histatimaniples 2 years ago 2
Yeh, I don't see why this is supposed to be "glam". Its way different than their classic stuff, but still extreme, just different. Almost like Mercyful Fate meets Discharge. Its still Cal singing right? Pretty dynamic vocalist based on doing two 100% different, extreme, no one else sounds like it vocal styles in his career...

GET THIS SHIT OFF YOUTUBE. IT'S HORRIBLE. Makes discharge sound like an embarrassing

ahh man no fucking way would sakevi try and sound like that. the M.A.N album is just more metal than the detestation, like the fancy guitar playing and shit. and well R.U.G is alright.

woah i like discharge but this isn't the discharge i like this sounds like what punk was against that hair metal stuff
disasterwave 2 years ago
The instruments don't actually sound so bad, but the King Diamond after getting his nuts smashed by a semi-truck sounding vocals are fucking awful.

Fuck them. I love this record.
robertwienerrocks 2 years ago 2
i suppose someone somewhere thought they were gonna make a million out of the metal market.
anarchobands 2 years ago
what was he thinking with the vocals. i remember when it first come out. me the young punk got all excited run of the the record store only to get it home and...stand there open mouthed over the deck wondering what the fuck was this. this is the first time since then and it would be fine ...but the vocals make me cringe with embarrassment.
anarchobands 2 years ago
Album Grave New World was the end of Discharge evolution. That evolution began in 1984. with The More I See single, and continued with Ignorance in 1985. Then in 1996. arrived ''strange album'' Grave New World that many funs didn't like. But fans forgot that musicians are also humans and that they are not in same mood alway. Cal was heroin addict in time of Grave New World. Anyway, for me, Grave New World is great album, and I'm not joking.
megafonija 2 years ago 3
The album is actually fine, it's just the vocals that suck. He could definitely sing better, don't know why he has to sound like a cow.
