  • @jessexplody This is probably one of the most intelligent and truthful comments I've ever read on any normally ignorance saturated social media site. I completely agree, this whole "versus" business is just hurting us more than it is helping.

  • Your responses are typical of someone whose used to people just nodding and agreeing with everything they say. Privelidged much?

  • @jessexplody Women aren't "seen as criminals too", there seen as "empowered" and "capable" when they want something, "innocent victims" when held accountable for irresponsible choices. How is 'pretty' girls being looked at too much and 'not pretty girls' not bein looked at enough even a serious issue compared to,say, false rape and domestic violence allegations that strip innocent men of there children and freedom?

  • @jessexplody Where did I talk about remoulding the globe??? Are you making this up or are you reaching real far with your interpretations and thinking?

  • @jessexplody That women should be submissive, ignorant without success is an ideology born out of ignorance & certainly is not what I stated. Are you suggesting that humans should emulate the behaviour of lions? Or are you saying that women are capable of raising & providing for children on their own?

Just curious, why do women need to advance at the expense of others while they ignore the needs of children as they drive for the success you eluded to? Why do women treat men like sub-humans?

  • This video has no sense! Everyone knows the world is going into a downturn. Women are willing to sell themselves for moeny. It happens a lot in Canada and US. Prostitution land. Welcome to the New World Order!

  • Women want men to give up their privileges while retaining theirs.

  • Most of the comments to this video are missing the point so hard it hurts. Wow. Guess this movie hits a big nerve in a *lot* of men. Interesting and sad.

  • How about the MISREPRESENTATION of MEN as Criminals, Rapists, Abusers and Idiots in the media? Oh MY BAD, Women's tits are being looked at and thats the real problem in society and we can't get sidetracked with actual suffering.

  • But who is being paid big lovely wads to expose their big wobbly parts?

Oooh, how unfair the world is on wimmin!

  • Only 17% of women make congress?

Well, it gets worse my friends. 0% empty garbage, 0% work down mines and 0% carry heavy hods up shaky scaffolding. Yet women form 51% of the population.

This is grossly unfair. I say let more women into these roles. Unlike your average feminist, I believe in equality.

  • I get sick and tired of all this attention constantly being paid on women and how to improve their lives and of course how it's men that keep them from being happy...

women, women, women, women, it's all you hear... women this, women that... since half a century

  • lol good old Marc Rudov

  • Are women really still whining? Being a woman is a cake walk compared with being a man. Check your privilege.

  • Yes your absolutely right I am oppressing women because they overwhelmingly buy salon, cosmo, seventeen, red etc etc and I buy national geographic and gamepro.

    OOOOOO the oppressed!

  • Sadly, most women I've encountered think the body and brain are mutually exclusive- like they have to choose between the two. Most men are realists- they want more than just a beautiful woman, but they'll take what they can get.

The girl at 0:35-0:39 who says "It's all about the body..." is actually really cute, but she seems to have a chip on her shoulder which will ultimately render her undesirable. I hope she figures this out, but I'm probably being overly optimistic.

  • What a bunch of whining.

  • @TheHappyMisogynist dead-on.

  • i am working on getting this screened at UNH, for anyone that is interested.

  • I think what makes (at least the trailer of) this movie so powerful is that it asks us to change things, it offers advice on how to change things. And I want to see it for that reason. Learning about oppression is important, but learning to work past it is powerful too. Can't wait to see the film. :)

  • I can't believe CJC etc has refereed to himself as "this guy" He is the only annoying guy here and he has an obsession with silencing and discounting womens ideas.

Consumers may be women but consumers do not get what they want but what they are given, and have to choose between the available alternatives. Like 1000 varieties of white bread.

And the movie is not about magazines and adverting. It's about portrayal of women in movies. Stick to the topic and don't take the easy option.

  • @galaxi101 You are obtuse. I do not wish to silence any woman except the banshee that believes truth is found in repeating lies. Most women are full of wonderful ideas but there are a chosen few professional victims who wish to view the world through the lens of oppression, even when none exists. Here's a little lesson in economics: If women don't BUY the media they claim oppresses them, then companies go out of business. Consumers get *exactly* what they want. That's how business works, fool.

  • @galaxi101 my oh my! ...reading your example of white bread caused me to wonder (pun intended) I've been making my own bread milling wheat for decades and when I decide to shop for bread the whole grain options stagger my even my imagination

...the movie is absolutely about the advertised fashion story, the trailer uses ads in which the women images have been airbrush and computer enhanced to illustrate the point being made ...this trailer is full of women that have bought that story

  • Some guy has gone through EVERY comment in order to let the world know how wrong we women are about sexism in the media, and how he, as a man, knows more about sexism than us mere women. We are so confused and misguided apparently.

Is there NOTHING that some guy doesn't think he knows more about than women? And is there NO place that he will not come to tell us how little we know about our own lives and feelings? I'm sick of every conversation women have being taken over by loudmouthed men.

  • @galaxi101 Some chick has posted the same BS, 3 times in a row, too! This guy you speak of is not "telling women how they feel," he is pointing out that women are the overwhelming majority of CONSUMERS for the very things this film claims leads to low self esteem. Women buy it and support it and when changing your hair color doesn't get rid of the fact that you have a fat ass, you blame men, because god forbid you take any responsibility for your own actions. Women aren't "wrong," the film is.

  • @galaxi101 You are the one who is unreasonable and loud mouthed. Just because a man speaks does not mean he insinuates knowing more than anyone else. He or she has a right to speak. Don't they? Or is this an agenda that precludes men which I believe is discriminatory and sexist, remember? Woman have remoulded the entire globe to suit their needs, wants and self proclaimed entitlements. The only place that has not been infiltrated by women is the men's room and the Masonic Fraternity!

  • Some guy has gone through EVEY comment in order to let the world know how wrong we women are about sexism in the media, and how he, as a man, knows more about sexism than us mere women. We are so confused and misguided apparently.

  • @galaxi101 I don't think hes trying to tell women how we feel or what we think. I think he has a point. I mean, I loooove reading US weekly, and In Touch magazine, and I don't know a single guy who like it at all. These magazines are full of gorgeous celebrities and make-up ads and everything, but in the end I'm the girl who is buying this stuff. No man is making me do it. An men get sexism in the media all the time - they are made to look like fools in commercials and stuff. just my opinion. :)

  • @SuzyDtheAsianBee I think a woman is most beautiful without ANY make up. Women don't get this as they spend billions of dollars each year trying to look and be something they are not! Men don't care so much about the make up women use, but women sure do! I suppose its' all about trying to be more attractive than the other girl. So it stands to reason it is women who have raised the bar of how women appear not men. You are right that men are made to look like fools in the media, which is wrong!

  • Some guy has gone through EVEY comment in order to let the world know how wrong we women are about sexism in the media, and how he, as a man, knows more about sexism than us mere women. We are so confused and misguided apparently.

  • One cannot be an "empowered, strong, woman" and a victim at the same time! Men do not care about shopping, fashion, makeup, Cosmo magazine, and beauty pagents. These are your "media influences" that supposedly control the body image of consumers. Guess what? These consumers are almost 100% women. It's not some ethereal "patriarchy." Over 60% of USA women are obese. If women are suffering eating disorders from "society" [which is code for "men"], it's gluttony for the most part, not anorexia.

  • I'm really looking forward to seeing this film, looks amazing.

  • I agree with everything that goopipoopie has said. And yes, I'm a guy too.

I mean, you have to think right? For a so-called forward moving society, with advancements in technology and medicine, how is it that our thinking, especially in regards to equality, still stuck in the pre-historic ages?

  • @memerness When you say "our thinking," you do not speak for me or the majority of men in North America. Why is it necessary to to state you are a guy with respect to your comments? Because "guys" like you want the approval of women. You want to be seen as "nice," and "not like those other, brutish male opressor guys." Women are anything but weak, mindless, robots who are victims to "society." You are what feminists call a "useful idiot."

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for making this movie, I can't wait to see it!

  • im a guy and i agree, the world is making women a sex toy!!!!!!! its wrong and disgusting!!!... the media bends to whatever the people want, lets make them bend then shall we? Men stop thinking like a bunch of horny dogs and consider women as humans, and women not all men are bad there is still respect.

  • @goopipoopie I suppose you are one of the good guys, right? All you have to do is pronounce on the internet that men are horny dogs and need to "consider women as humans." If you believe that men as a whole view women as less than human, then you are very mistaken. You are obvious in your attempts to garner approval from anonymous internet feminists by making it a point to mention that you are a guy and to badmouth men. You are known as a "mangina" and women view you with thinly veiled contempt.

  • great!

  • I don't mean that women MUST be "masculine", just that compulsory restrictive "femininity" is a burden placed on women to keep them weak and in their place. And women fall for it, so fearful are they of being called "maculine"

If being strong and free and confident and comfortable is masculine...then I love being masculine!!

If being weak and restricted and existing to please others is feminine..then NO I am NOT feminine.

  • Compulsory "femininity" is used to keep women in their place. And women fall for it.

Anytime a women threatens to be strong she is called unfeminine and this puts her back in her place. Women are so fearful of not being feminine it is used as a weapon against them.

Women need to take up space, sit comfortably, speak strongly, not be attractive. To wear pants, have short hair, be hated for being "masculine"

When all strength and competence is labelled "masculine" women should be masculine.

  • @galaxi101 Who makes your definition of femininity "compulsory," exactly? Men don't have a say in what is feminine. Only women do. I dont find women attractive who are fat, wear mens clothes, have short hair, and do not shave their legs. If you don't care to attract me (as most lesbians can attest) then, by all means, present yourself in whatever way you wish. You actually advocate that women "not be attractive," and "take up space." How you link this to being "strong and competent" is puzzling.

  • I notice that all of these women are presenting themselves in a traditionally (male defined) feminine way. They speak softly, make delicate movements, wear make up, and often wear restrictive and impractical clothes. Everything about their presentation screams...I'm weak, delicate, stupid.

How can women expect to be taken seriously while wearing face paint like a clown, clothes like a porn star, and wearing stilts (high heels).

Women need to be prepared to be "unfeminine" and face the hatred.

  • This looks fantastic. I live in New Zealand - anyone know if we will get to see it here?

  • PMS and mood swings? Excuse me? Urgh!

  • good upload

  • What if all women, teens and girls say to the media: "I don't care what you think about me, my looks, or body size." And what if we decide NOT to spend our money on makeup, fashion, or diet products? I bet the fashion, cosmetic, and weight-loss industries would go BANKRUPT! Let say it and save our money. We'll use it do go on a vacation or start a small business! YAY!!

  • @filmtress I agree : )

  • @filmtress Out of all the bullshit man-blaming comments (disguised as "society") yours is the only one that suggests a real, achievable solution. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon of victimization, you present the obvious and easily obtainable resolve to the dilemma of body image issues. Everyone else that has commented here wants "society" (i.e. "men") to find fat, hairy women attractive. Why? Stop supporting cosmo, Sex and the City and Dior cosmetics. Men don't buy that stuff, women do.

  • @CJC1295DAC It really is deeper than just buying stuff. The real product being sold here is 'Low Self-Esteem". The message to women, teens and girls is "Look, you're nothing worth paying attention to unless you're wearing these products. This strategy has been in operation since the patriarchs descended the Russian Stepps. There are many men in the "Business of Women", as Fashion designers, Cosmetics Corps., Surgeons, Botox, etc. Why? Because they profit from it! Low Self-esteem = Big Money!

  • @filmtress It is capitalism, not patriarchy. Women spend the overwhelming majority of both men's AND women's income. This is an undeniable researched and validated truth. Corporations CATER to women. The message is not 'Low Self Esteem,' the message is "you're worth it," "you're a goddess, Venus," and "you're much smarter and more competent than men." Now when the goods don't deliver, I can see how that would lead to low self-esteem. Fat isn't attractive just because makeup is put over top of it

  • @CJC1295DAC It's low self-esteem. Capitalism in this case wouldn't be successful if it didn't play on women's insecurities. I don't know the last time you've been a woman but if you ever were, you'd see that from the time you're small society inundates you with gender specific roles. Boys = G.I. Joe's, little girls little dolls for motherhood & Barbies to be 'hot'. Women shouldn't try to please boys/men, they should seek to fulfill their destinies -- not getting surgery or throwing up.

  • @filmtress What is so wrong with being a woman and fulfilling what nature designed women to be and do? It seems women are unhappy to be who they are and are on a perpetual quest to change everything that is natural. Why? Be yourself and be kind to others. That will gain much respect. Unfortunately there are many who are unkind and cruel. Who in their right mind would put up with that kind of nonsense?

  • @ALVHUN Jane Fonda said it best "Media creates consciousness. And if what gets put out there that creates our consciousness by men, we're NOT going to make any progress." In other words if only men writes & creates media they will always stereotype or box us in HIS desired roles of what he thinks a woman should be.That judging from the current standards it's half-naked voiceless hip shaking, big breasted bimbos catering to men. Do flips like seals vying to take our clothes off & do him. FAIL!

  • @filmtress "It really is deeper than just buying stuff." Of course! Capitalism is just "guy stuff." Women need a vast, patriarchal conspiracy in order to get all emotionally worked up. Sadly, this movie will make women feel worse than capitalism ever would, because it gives them an excuse to blame others for their unhappiness.

  • @MrDusty2112 What do you mean "Capitalism is just "guy stuff."" Women spend far more money than men buying all kinds of stuff. Most women are using child support and baby bonus money to spend on things for themselves and not on the children as the money was intended to be spent.

  • @ALVHUN I was being sarcastic! I like your comment, though.

  • @MrDusty2112 I figured you were being sarcastic Dusty, as I seized the opportunity to make my comment that women are the biggest spenders in a society they condemn as unfair to them. Women have bought into capitalism while feminism at one point wanted it destroyed. Truth is, women wanted to control it, not destroy it. Now women must work, and sometimes even work hard, unlike in the past when they lived off the avails of men and others. Well many women still do and they get special treatment too.

  • a sincere thank you from every woman trying to deconstruct this system of external and internalized oppression

  • @zareave

Thank you to YOU as well! <3

  • awesome!

  • @Chris1218218 Tl;dr you didn't get the point, go back to Nintendostationbox

  • The funny thing is that America probably has the lowest standards in the world when it comes to women's appearance, especially weight.

  • @Armitage2 My point exactly, although with less expletives than my original post. Women control the overwhelming majority of discretionary spending, both from female AND male sources. As such, advertisers cater to women, not men. Why advertise to a demographic that *doesn't* spend money? Take a look in any clothing store: 80% women's, 15% unisex / children, 5% men's. It's glaringly obvious that industry CATERS to women, not the other way around. Are men now expected to find fat women attractive?

  • How is this trailer's message different? ...it is full of blame and fault finding ...these comments support that ongoing ever escalating concept of duality thinking which justifies its own perpetuation

perhaps it is time to stop (turn off any form of media) and simply take stock of our own lives ...of what is really present in our lives

...to what do we chose to give our energy

perhaps it is time to be present in our own lives and let 'the media' lie in it's own bed

    just a thought : )

  • @gaiagale If we could all have the presence of mind to do that, it would be a beautiful world!

However, media and culture affect each other more and more with each generation. If the problem was just individual girls and women being affected by seeing negative stereotypes, then this ignoring the media would be the solution. However, when a whole culture buys into these myths and stereotypes, it doesn't matter whether or not you personally pay attention to it.

  • @latieplolo thanks for responding to my comment ...our world is "a beautiful world!" ...we/I can see its beauty everywhere if we/I look at our world rather than the media's ever present daunting version of it ...we Would see "a beautiful world!" ...we would see people are making choices to honour each other and celebrate our ingenuity ...we can turn off the media ...we can stop ourselves from paying them to 'advertise us' to us to death ...we (each 'one' of us) are the only ones who can : )

  • @gaiagale A very responsible attitude. Too often people would rather globally externalize their own insecurities and misfortunes. It's never their own fault. It's this nebulous and ill-defined "society" and "the media" who are too blame. The spin this film puts out is that society=media=men. You see, "men" are a much more tangible target than something so general as "society," or "the media." There is already a huge political machine called NOW ready to pounce on the concept presented here. Sad.

  • @CJC1295DAC thank-you for responding to my comment ...exactly my point ...the solution is deciding to 'be able' ...to respond ...to turn off the media ...it is a well known fact that if one points a finger one has three pointing back ...I have a vision of the media reporting that that is ...I have a vision of the media reporting responsibly encouraging their interviewees to speak in the first person singular therefore taking ownership of that which comes out of their minds through their mouths

  • I love how the butthurt comments here don't refute the point made in the preview of this film , but only support it. Because "Waaah, how are you point out blatant sexism, now go make me a sandwich!" Toooootally makes them wrong!

You idiots make it too easy.

  • This is brilliant.

  • When does it come out?

  • A truly inspirational documentary bringing light to an unbelievable important subject. Thank you Jennifer Newsom for putting your time, creativity, and passion into helping America!

  • "It depends on who's piloting the plane." This is so true. If it's women passengers and women stewardesses but the plane is piloted by a patriarchal man then "there you have it" he's running the same ole program. Expoliting women, teens and girls by keep theming under his systems of control. In this case it doesn't matter how many women working for the program if the program results in him staying in control.

  • @bluetooth198 I'll fix you a sandwich, baby. What do you want? BLT&RP (Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato + Rat poison) or TR&C (Turkey on Rye + Cyanide? You choose. You can have any one of them but you have to promise me one thing: That you won't leave one bite. Oh your don't eat meat? Well I'm sure I can come up with something you'll love. You still hungry? (Sinister laugh)

  • metric <3 !

  • oice and the will to think for ourselves, not feed off of what the media is showing us.

  • @hxcmicswinger if its about choice.......why would people choose to be degraded and to have low selfesteem? Why don't men 'choose' to be degraded in this way? I think your view stems from the fact that sexism is subtle these days, this leads to the danger of thinking it doesn't exist when I assure you it is alive and well.

Things like, lack of access to child care is a subtle way in which women are discriminated against. If you can't access or afford child care, you can't work.

  • @kelpbucket my bad yo. (: you gots a point there.

  • @kelpbucket Wow. You think sexism is 'subtle'?? You must not be a woman, because it is ANYTHING but subtle. It is an assault on my senses every day of my life. EVERY DAY.

  • @DoctressJulia I think many would agree that sexism is more subtle today than it was in say the era of first way and second wave feminism where the opression of women was very obvious. Today due to the demonization of feminists and their characterization as a bunch of "angry man hating women" ,as well as the advances that women have made since first and second wave femisim, women and men are prone to believing there is no longer a problem, when there is a very big problem.

  • @DoctressJulia I think you may have read my previous comment in the wrong context .....and yes, I am a women, and the presumption that only women could care about womens issues is also inaccurate, it's a collective social problem.

  • Comment removed

  • @hxcmicswinger You are woefully ignorant and gravely misinformed if you really think that. Get a clue.

  • @DoctressJulia I notice dear lady, that your witty retorts to long explanations of certain points of view boil down to "get a clue," "fuck off,"and "get educated." Please enlighten the world with your wonderful counterpoints to arguments you disagree with. Other than espousing how you are assaulted with sexism EVERY DAY, you don't offer up much other than to say others don't know what they are talking about. So please, oh bastion of wisdom, offer your intelligent analysis. Tāmāde hùndàn!

  • @hxcmicswinger I believe you made the point much more eloquently than I did, and without the profanity. Bravo. Apparently, there are those individuals who consider any point of view other than their own as "ignorant," and "woefully misinformed." Their entire retort to a well thought out and written argument is "get a clue," which artfully demonstrates just how educated and and skilled in social analysis one can become when exposed dogma and victim mentality.

  • thank you from millions of hard working women.

  • It's long overdue that both women and men stand for something more than the debased and deranged portrayals in our media. Didn't really like the flashes of it even in this because I'd love to show this to my preteen 10 yr old.

  • look forward to catching up with everyone at Sundance. check out The Wayshower Movie and visit us at the Filmmakers Lounge - 751 Main Street.

  • @CJC1295DAC Oh, look. another ignorant moron telling us that we victimize ourselves! Fuck off and try educating yourself.

  • @DoctressJulia What an incredibly deep and penetrating refutation of my points. My language was directed at Jane Fonda and the other pundits who see victimization at every turn (and in the same breath tell the world how powerful they are). Get off your high horse DoctressJulia! My take on the fashion and beauty industry points blame squarely on the consumers who keep it going and those consumers aren't men. Why don't you educate yourself beyond "The Beauty Myth," Cāo nǐmā!

  • SUNDANCE IS ALSO A CONTRIBUTOR TO THIS, CORRUPTED

    WATCH

  • Bullshit

  • about time! well done Jennifer Siebel Newsom, we need this level of debate and I hope the movie will make its way to Australia... we have the same issues here.

  • Looks like an interesting documentary. However, I do question some of the celebs commenting in it, they have in some form contributed to the negative way women are portrayed in media, i.e. "Barbarella" Jane Fonda. I will still support watching this movie though.

  • please support this movie everyone!!!! girls from my school are in it and it supports the rights of women!

  • @Angelinamariemesta This movie does *not* support the rights of women. It treats women as if they are children with no minds of their own. It tells women they are strong and empowered, but at the same time tells them they are "victims." You cannot be both. The "media" is not this ghost-like substance that controls women. The "media" is not "men," either. Women spend the most on media. Women consume the most media. So who do you think drives what is in "the media?" Who reads women's magazines?

  • Looks interesting. I don't have to be a woman to clearly understand the issue at hand.

  • @akhan727 Well, yes, actually, you do. You can only understand it from the outside. We live in a COMPLETELY different world than you! Do you even realize that?! I love when men think that they have a monopoly on ALL knowledge and understanding- like women don't have any experiences separate from theirs. Fucking patriarchal bullshit.

  • Not sure about this one.

    Good luck @ Sundance, though.
