That problem was caused by the dismantling of our productivity and centralization of our economy (a few big stores, a few big farms), coupled with empire building (preemptive wars, or "picking fights"). Not everyone has a family - or if they do, a family financially capable - of caring for them. The problem is that since most politicians are more worried about getting reelected than actually doing good, they aren't willing to make the hard choices. Social security, medicare, medicaid, and a large military all enjoy wide public support, so no one wants to go on the record saying they need to be cut or we'll, quite simply, go bankrupt.
Choose: a smaller welfare system now, or none in about 20 or 30 years.

Then you would keep 15% of your income that normally goes to the government in taxes! You keep that money and save it (or buy gold so it holds it's value until we abolish the FED) or invest it for your retirement. Right now what you pay into the program you won't get back anyway, so you're being ripped off.

The average recipient gets EVERYTHING they paid into it (plus 5% interest) within the first 5 years of collecting, and they collect for 15 years on average. @sgapplebee You're stats are wrong because they don't account for the massive loss of purchasing power of those dollars they are now collecting. Nominally you're right, but count for inflation (which you have to) and people are lucky to get 70% of what they paid in. Take like my grandpa for ex. He was paying payroll tax in 1950's 60's 70's 80's. The dollar has lost over 70% of it's value since the 50's so it take a lot more dollars just to get back what he paid in.
Then please refer me to where you get your stats. When I looked into this a couple of years ago, most of the stats from different places were pretty close to each other AND had included inflation in the formula.
@sgapplebee Sure, search for shadowstats website and see their information on inflation. They calculate inflation the way it was done before the 1980's, when it was done legitimately. What our government and the FED calls inflation is the manipulated CPI index. The FED and government however do not manipulate the PPI index (yet). The PPI is eventually passed through to consumers so this is currently the best measure of inflation we have. You can find that it's been around 10%.
@sgapplebee Now with that information, understand that you can't use the CPI past the 1980's to calculate how much purchasing power your dollars lost. Now using any table of inflation rates pre 1980 and the PPI post 1980 you can calculate how much value your dollars lost. Start with 100 dollars in 1912 and subtract your purchasing power for each year. You can do this in excel. I say do this yourself so you trust the numbers, but this has been done many times and you can find it online.
The problem, as always, comes down to WHOS stats do we trust, doesn't it?
However, one thing is for sure. Real simple economics here: Both parties have increased spending while tax breaks for the rich were given. We had a brief respite during the nineties, but despite that Bush cut taxes for wealthy, increased spending on two unfunded wars and enacted Medicare Part D which was not funded either. Obama gets elected, and continues the wars and spending without increasing taxes. One dollar taken in, one dollar spent and vice versa. We need a social safety net, so let's raise taxes on the rich!
@pairtrader Well they were already paid for by the taxpayer- when you pay for your social security every year, for instance, it's supposed to come back to you later, and economists have said that social security can pay back all of its balances for 75 years.

If we want to make real progress, we should be able to listen to the different sides and find common ground- that's real bipartisanship: not JUST compromise, but also being man enough to admit that yeah, I agree with this, it's a good idea- there's nothing wrong with the other guy supporting it too. Ron Paul is a conservative. I am a liberal. I think that Paul is too far and somewhat extreme in certain domestic issues, but I respect that he is a real conservative. If Republicans were like Ron Paul and democrats were like Dennis Kucinich, we could have real, reasonable conversations on this issue.

That problem was caused by the dismantling of our productivity and centralization of our economy (a few big stores, a few big farms), coupled with empire building (preemptive wars, or "picking fights"). Not everyone has a family - or if they do, a family financially capable - of caring for them. The problem is that since most politicians are more worried about getting reelected than actually doing good, they aren't willing to make the hard choices. Social security, medicare, medicaid, and a large military all enjoy wide public support, so no one wants to go on the record saying they need to be cut or we'll, quite simply, go bankrupt.
Choose: a smaller welfare system now, or none in about 20 or 30 years.

Then you would keep 15% of your income that normally goes to the government in taxes! You keep that money and save it (or buy gold so it holds it's value until we abolish the FED) or invest it for your retirement. Right now what you pay into the program you won't get back anyway, so you're being ripped off.

Nominally you're right, but count for inflation (which you have to) and people are lucky to get 70% of what they paid in. Take like my grandpa for ex. He was paying payroll tax in 1950's 60's 70's 80's. The dollar has lost over 70% of it's value since the 50's so it take a lot more dollars just to get back what he paid in.

@sgapplebee Sure, search for shadowstats website and see their information on inflation. They calculate inflation the way it was done before the 1980's, when it was done legitimately. What our government and the FED calls inflation is the manipulated CPI index. The FED and government however do not manipulate the PPI index (yet). The PPI is eventually passed through to consumers so this is currently the best measure of inflation we have. You can find that it's been around 10%.

@sgapplebee Now with that information, understand that you can't use the CPI past the 1980's to calculate how much purchasing power your dollars lost. Now using any table of inflation rates pre 1980 and the PPI post 1980 you can calculate how much value your dollars lost. Start with 100 dollars in 1912 and subtract your purchasing power for each year. You can do this in excel. I say do this yourself so you trust the numbers, but this has been done many times and you can find it online.

However, one thing is for sure. The BIG WINNERS in ALL ponzi schemes are at the beginning of it; and the BIG LOSERS are ALWAYS at the end of it--which is EXACTLY what's happening with Socialist Security. There's no way in hell I will ever come EVEN CLOSE to getting out of it what I am forced to put into it.

these news people don't seem interested in a genuine exchange or actually listening to their guest. In this case they are just trying to corner Ron Paul and get some sensational sound bite or news story. They're just looking for the 'gotcha' line... but it backfires because we see it and understand whats happening. so keep it up!

I support Ron Paul but,Mr Paul you can't get rid of ssi.disabled and elderly will be starving and homless.you address social security but never address how your plans will effect disabled people.

@solkacorot so before there was medicaid and social security olderly people were starving and homeless? i didn't think so, if people had more of there own money and weren't dependent on the govt. they could help the elderly and the elderly would have been forced to secure their own retirement while they were younger. do you really think its ok to steal money from me to support yourself when your old simply on the basis that you're old?

@solkacorot Well I aint American so I'm not aware of sublte differences between social security and supplemental security, especially when you refer to them by intial. I see that Seestu above has already given you one response, here's another - why are you such a dick as to think RP would carefully transition for one group, yet one throw another out the window? Real simple economics here: Both parties have increased spending while tax breaks for the rich were given. We had a brief respite during the nineties, but despite that Bush cut taxes for wealthy, increased spending on two unfunded wars and enacted Medicare Part D which was not funded either. Obama gets elected, and continues the wars and spending without increasing taxes. One dollar taken in, one dollar spent and vice versa. We need a social safety net, so let's raise taxes on the rich!

@pairtrader Well they were already paid for by the taxpayer- when you pay for your social security every year, for instance, it's supposed to come back to you later, and economists have said that social security can pay back all of its balances for 75 years.

You know, I'm subscribed to both this channel and the Young Turks. Both sides make good points, and they disagree- I would just like to see more civility in these comments. If we want to make real progress, we should be able to listen to the different sides and find common ground- that's real bipartisanship: not JUST compromise, but also being man enough to admit that yeah, I agree with this, it's a good idea- there's nothing wrong with the other guy supporting it too. Good for them.

Ron Paul is a conservative. I am a liberal. I think that Paul is too far and somewhat extreme in certain domestic issues, but I respect that he is a real conservative. If Republicans were like Ron Paul and democrats were like Dennis Kucinich, we could have real, reasonable conversations on this issue.

A: Is X right or wrong?
B: Majority of people say right, so it is right
However, Cenk's use of polls in this case was appropriate, as he invoked the polls to reflect the opinion of the population in order to establish a foundation for his followup. People are more angry over cuts than the bankruptcy, thus cutting them would be unpopular. Legitimate use of statistic.
I'm not "choosing sides." Just pointing it out

@DemonicCollusion Cenk uses the poll to suggest somehow cutting entitlements, like Medicare or Medicaid, is wrong because it's not what the people want. He wants to say those polls point directly to the source of anger for the masses. It oversimplifies to back his statist liberal point; that people don't want entitlement cuts, they want higher taxes on rich people, etc.
Of course they don't want their handouts cut! The poll is irrelevant to solving the issue, and cause of mass anger.
