  • I'm a beginning drummer am becoming comfortable getting my rolls up to speed. The issue is that I've been using my index finger and not the pinky. Would you recommend switching? I'd hate to have all that work be for nothing. Does the pinky grip work for field/marching drumming only or would that be a superior grip for matched grip drumkit drumming as well? Thanks in advance for anyone out there with insight on this dilemma of mine.

  • @HankLafayette: Now days, except for those seeking to authentically perform ancient music, the overhand grip is controlled using wrist turn and not forearm rotation. Wrist turn is like the motion of revving a motorcycle throttle. Wrist turning is easier for most drummers to learn with advantages for speed and finger control. The wrist turn method is most effective when the stick is secured using the thumb and forefinger or thumb and middle finger.

  • @Triplediddle Thanks. You've saved me many a headache with this. I'll continue as is.

  • Thanks for posting this, very nice to see the actual movements!

  • Thanky very much

  • GREAT MAN! what a beatiful part of our drumming History! I will show this to as many students as I can! love it!

  • @Gabeandhenrique: Thanks, I hoped it would be useful.

  • Absolutely one of the best explanations of Moeller I've seen...thanks so much for breaking this down for peeps that have trouble grasping the true nature of the grip and its function. Keep it up!

  • @DrummerEtc: Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting this. You explain Moeller's intent very well, which is misunderstood by many. I will be sending students here. Thanks again.

  • @johnwooton: Thank you. I thought it would be valuable for drummers to see actual films of Gus Moeller playing. I wonder what ever became of the originals and how much more was filmed that he decided not to use? I guess we will never know.

  • Thats a really great video, those stick look huge dont they.. thanks for the upload greatly appreciated and enjoyed.

  • @MADROCKS212: I hadn't thought about it before but you're right, those are some big field sticks.

  • Very nice. Gus was quite the innovator of his time.

  • @MYNAMETAYLA: Yes, Moeller was ahead of the curve when it came to explaining stroke techniques.
