can someone explain why there were so much sparks? Isn't it really dangerous and effect the speed when having the car touching the ground? or there is another reason for that?
@Kaizer147 they used magnesium strips to stop the underbody being damaged when it was heavy with fuel at the start. the sparks are from the strips being rubbed along the track whenever the car accelerates, goes over a bump etc, they changed the strips to wood in 1994.
Those sparks flying off are a scary reminder/notice just how volatile those cars were. Effectively what it's saying is that on certain areas of the track, the bottom of the car is actually "bottoming out" which was ultimately what caused his car to slide at Imola costing his life. You NEVER see that in today's car designs. I'm kind of amazed there weren't more fatal crashes like Aryton's in that era.
Hockenheim wise, I think the straights are cool but let's be honest, F1 is about turns.
Well there is wooden plank now on the bottom of the car, they still bottom sometimes but there is no sparks like with the titanium skid-blocks. Also they don't bottom out a lot because only a certain amount of wear of said plank is allowed.
Great lap by Senna for sure but Mansell won the pole. At that point in the season, Senna was holding on for dear life. Better engine in the McLaren but otherwise an inferior car to Williams. This was real F1 at real racing circuits with real men driving. Their will never be anyone like Senna, Mansell or Prost...
Ayrton was fortunate that the Williams was unreliable for quite a bit of 1991 because it was the better car. He won the championship that year, but it could have gone to Mansell or even Patrese if the Williams had been more reliable.
No doubt the man was a racing genius, but even the best drivers struggle with inferior machinery. The Williams should have won in 1991 but early season unreliability ruined their chances. Also, McLaren won a couple of critical races the mid-season.
Wonderful days.
