Some immigrants are accepted more than natural born citizens are in USA. Examples are: italians, australians and irish. That is just the males. I bet there are others I cant think of. "Culture?", language, religion, history, power, ethnicity? As a consequence, there are infinite definitions for what belongs to what "world region." Do a simple test, look at the UN, WTO, WHO, World Population Bureau, or just about anywhere else and you'll see regions defined differently.
...and because of the arbitrary nature of this sort of 'delineating' - just about everyone has learned different things about what belongs to what region. Is Indiana part of the midwest? How about Minnesota, North Dakota, Missouri or Arkansas? Depends completely on whom you ask.

I'm an American of Mexican descent and I grew up in a town on the American-Mexican border where the population is predominantly hispanic. I've met many illegal immigrants some poor some rich who come to America looking for a better life. I don't understand the hysteria surrounding illegal immigrants. God no I have no problem with teens, especially older teens working(!) I've not gone a single month without work since I was about 16 and I've been to college in the meantime.
I just think that until a child is, say, 14 or 15, it is our basic responsibility, as adults, to protect them, even from their parents. Part of that protection means making their childhood a time to learn. A child should have time to enjoy life and most importantly, learn.
I am talking about children aged 8 to 13 who basically worked full time for a daily pittance (and I'm talking about less than a dollar or two). Generations have paid into the system and we have built this country that is something to be proud of. A lot of economic immigrants come in as asylum seekers, and usurp resources that they have not paid into. I can deal with that but a phenomenon I refuse to deal with us demanding we change our laws and culture to accomodate them - and this is almost unique to muslims. Sure it has. A famous incident involved the niqab(which was illegal before it was made legal for the Muslims' sake). An incident then transpired of a robbery taking place and the robbers not getting caught because they were wearing the veil. They might even have been men!
There are loads of these sorts of things happening, but I can't remember right now. I can't count the number of times I've been shocked to see new policies being made exlusively for Islam's sake.

The whole thing about geographic boundaries... UNLESS you use a strictly topographic definition, it's completely arbitrary. What do you base it on? "Culture?", language, religion, history, power, ethnicity? As a consequence, there are infinite definitions for what belongs to what "world region." Do a simple test, look at the UN, WTO, WHO, World Population Bureau, or just about anywhere else and you'll see regions defined differently.

The Silk Road was primarily the trade route between the Islamic civilizations and China. If you mean the silk trade that would extend to Europe, that wouldn't come until much later.

I'm an American of Mexican descent and I grew up in a town on the American-Mexican border where the population is predominantly hispanic. I've met many illegal immigrants some poor some rich who come to America looking for a better life. I don't understand the hysteria surrounding illegal immigrants. It's really not that big of a problem.

We just need a better system for documenting them and speeding up the visa process. Right now it takes 10-15 years to become an American citizen. It's no wonder they choose to come illegally.

Immigrants come over for all sorts of reasons. The rich for safety, the poor for money to feed their families. I'm not sure the Mexican government can just create jobs and solve the labor problem. If it were that easy I'm sure the US would be pressuring them to do it. Mexico is just poor. They have 3 times the population of California and 1/2 the GDP.

They have the rich and the poor and a very small middle class and the people in charge rule by fear, just look at their justice system and their abysmal educational system. I'm not sure they are oil rich. The US produces twice as much oil. While their needs are not as great as ours their supply is quickly diminishing. Some say in 10 years their oil industry will collapse.
I agree about the corruption but I think the corruption is a result of not having a middle class to hold their politicians accountable at the polls.

Petroleos Mexicanos made $100 billion (US 2nd largest buy next to Canada) last year and it's only loosing money because the government is corrupt and controlled by the elite class. Not to mention they have more natural gas than they know what to do with. Their people can't protest because they live in fear of a horrible justice and prison system. Japan has fewer resources and land mass than Mexico, there's no excuse other than to exploit the people there for cheap slave labor.

And I think that bias and bigotry are sort of natural human thinking processes - I think what we should do is recognize that and try to arrest our own actions that come out of that kind of thinking...

vaansen-i'm sure kevin was joking about the children- but i need to ask- do you think its better that many kids in us are not asked to much of anything that would be considered work - its actually illegal here for kids to do any kind of labor - teens working summers in the fields would really put a dent in migrant worker problem - is it better they are left running the streets with no clue about work ethic?

God no I have no problem with teens, especially older teens working(!) I've not gone a single month without work since I was about 16 and I've been to college in the meantime.
I just think that until a child is, say, 14 or 15, it is our basic responsibility, as adults, to protect them, even from their parents. Part of that protection means making their childhood a time to learn. A child should have time to enjoy life and most importantly, learn.

I am talking about children aged 8 to 13 who basically worked full time for a daily pittance (and I'm talking about less than a dollar or two). That is exploitation (no child that age works for himself), usually the conditions and pay are terrible(!), and when that happens, I don't care where you are from, we have failed in one of our basic responsibilities as human beings.

I'm a PhD type (hopefully this July anyway), A@A, and I can only speak for PhD types in the social sciences, but the idea that they don't care for people that never went to college is way off. If anything, they care a lot more about them than your average right-wing middle class BA or MBA type.

The Middle East is in Asia. Every 4 years, we have the Asian Games, and folks from Jordan, Israel, Iraq, Iran etc. participate. Historically, the Middle East has been in contact with East Asia (i.e. China) through Central Asia. They called this the "Silk Road."

Islam is collectivist with loyalty to the Uma and Koran before loyalty to truth.
America is individualistic and reality focused.

I cited John Muhammad because he is an American convert to Islam who expressed sympathy for terrorists and engaged in terrorist violence. I also cited him because he murdered someone at a gas station that I use.

I'm not sure I agree with the ruling, because "terrorism" in its truest sense has a clear political or social objective (which this guy did not really have - I mean his objectives were so vague that I think he was basically insane), a lot of state courts charged him with "acts of terror."

They might make differnces between German, English and Czech languages, but they would also acknowledge that these are all in Europe. Like Iranian, Chinese, and Japanese are all in Asia. Even though Chinese and Japanese are very very differnt from one another.
