This is a first of the conductor side I have seen of this BEing. LOVED his musical creations and lyrics but his conductor- perfection must have been brutal. His signs are a conductors-sign-language of sorts. This vid creation is a fantastic side of this great I am thrilled to have introduced to me. ENJOY!!!!!! :-)
Does anyone know what kind of device George Duke is using between 3:45 - 4:05 ? I've been looking for that sound for a while now! He uses it on the George Duke Trio albums too
@edwardalexklose: thank you for relpying, but you do realise the video clip is from the 1970ies, when the designer of the kaoscillator was probably still shitting his diapers? ;)
maybe I should just write George an email, he's still active with a website and everything.....
Frank's conducting style resembles Walter Thompsons soundpainting method to some degree ! Another example of people developing similar ideas simultaniously.....
some years ago i only knew his music. thanks to youtube i felt like i got to know him a little better. probably the most exeptional human bein ill ever know in my lifetime
@JeffersonDinedAlone pretentious, self-opinionated, transmural attempt at befouling the legend of Frank Zappa. You sir.... FAIL TO FUCK. Now go rotoplook your own anus with a starfish shaped branding iron whilst we get on with enjoying the incredible music of Mr. Frank Zappa.
thanks for that! :) I will show that to my ensemble students...although we still work on a rather simple medley of popular music tunes, this will hopefully put their minds on fire...or at least amuse them :D
fascinating. Zappa was the real deal as far as a avante-rock fusion composer and conductor goes. It's amusing that he conducted sometimes without a shirt and a cigarette going.
And you wonder where the inspiration for things like Stomp and Blue Man Group came from? All that AND real musical chops, always more chops, increasing over time. The man realized his dreams and made some of ours come true.
Dear god that is amazing. I knew he was a great composer (obviously), but to be a great conductor and to just make something like that is amazing! Thanks for showing us this
@tepporocks - It also explains to people who have only heard his Live recordings exactly how all those insane sounds from the Stage were executed at such precision.
@tepporocks - During 88 Tour, in the Recordings you can hear Scott Thunes, the Bassist, make a few errors, but it was mainly because of the tensions that happened on that Tour at that time, or so I understand. But Zappa liked him and wanted to keep him.
I would like to get the film where they interview the members, for instance that when the vid begins and Art is speaking, or when Jimmy Carl is speaking... where can I download it?
Although I'm sure he could give his bandmembers a VERY hard time when recording or rehearsing. As explained before, he was quite a perfectionist. But he COULD makes mistakes, while others weren't allowed too. I'm sure he was very demanding. Perhaps even to a degree us fans cant imagine. Thats a side of Frank we'll probably never know much about. Still, his demand of perfection and control in terms of music, created some of the most exceptional & beautifull art of the century
That would be 'Brown Shoes Don't Make It', the fourteenth track on 'Absolutely Free". One of his Masterpieces, without question. This version sounds like it might be from the Tinseltown Rebellion tour...there is a live version of Brown Shoes on the album Tinseltown Rebellion , and this sounds like the same band.
It's "Easy Meat" actually, the "classical" section (thus FZ conducts). There apparently is no surviving footage of any FZ band playing "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" AFAIK.
what i trip ,still not a fan!!lol bye bye frankie!!

Yes, WeAther Report. Got a "lazy" a on keyboard.

Made King Crimson look like a bunch of poofs.
He harnessed energy that Wether Report would get on a bungee jump!
Fearless. Ferocious and Fun.
Humanity always stalked Frank's work.
Aspiration plooked absurdity.

Sheer magic. Or not, since it's probably sheer hard work.
But it's fascinating to see the rapport Frank had with his bands.
And in a way, it reminds me of a circus.
A circus is a strictly run operation, where only the best acts and artists are allowed
to perform their arts. And if they're not constantly performing at the peak of their ability, they will quickly be sacked.
And that's very much like playing in a Zappa band, I believe.
And both Zappa and the circus happen to be entertaining!
