  • Were a lot of the 'standard' embellishments we are so familiar with in this role originally written for Nellie Melba by her voice teacher? I thought I heard or read that somewhere once.

  • I have to say that I really liked the "unusual" decoration in the cabaletta, I found them refreshing and delightful and as well sung as we have come to expect from Claycomb. She is indeed "one of the finest leggerio sopranos we have today".

    Thank you for posting.

  • thats what I love singers... who arent afraid to take a famous aria and make it their own. rock on Claycomb!

  • I often admire Laura Claycomb's singing and I'm sure she is wonderful in this role live on stage. But I'm really spoiled when it comes to Lucia, having seen the late Joan Sutherland in the role, as well as hearing on recordings the likes of Callas, Devia, and Pons and the earlier coloratura warblings of Galli-Curci, Tetrazzini, and Melba. Nonetheless, Claycomb is one of the finest leggiero sopranos we have today. Thanks to sevoflurane for forwarding and coloraturafan for posting.

  • @meltzerboy I also saw Sills as Lucia, a great performance! Claycomb sings this aria very well, with unusual decorations in the cabaletta, that, for me, take some getting used to.

  • @meltzerboy

I like the voice, but I'm also ...confused by the decorations in the cabaletta. Too far from the music to me.
