The melody at the end of the chorus reminds me of the Yogi Bear theme song: "that's because HE'S SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE BEAR" ("still cruisin' after all of these years").
I remember I never cared much for the main song, but the CHORUS is the coolest thing out! I could never get those lines out of my mind and now that I've found it again, I'm rocking to it again! (After all of these years).
i dnt care what anybody says this is another beach boy classic :)
it's in the same field as all summer long, fun fun fun, surfin usa and all those type records...it cant touch pet sounds but it's 2 different types of music.
I remember this song , the video and that a guy won all 36 ' vettes from the contest from 1989 . This is one of my all - time fave car songs by the group and it shows everybody with Carl , Brian , Al , Bruce & Mike . I was only 19 when this song came out but I still love it today @ 40 ! great song , just too bad they didn't release it on a full album of new songs . Tim , 7.4.11
I wonder if Mike knows how big of a creep he looked like lookin at all those girls like he was who were YOUNGER than some of his own kids. Eeek. Either way I like this song (I hate to say) because Carl's voice, as always, takes it to another level.
Carl saved Brian's like by making Brian return to therapy with Landy in the 1980s. Brian was hugely overweight and unwell at that time. But Landy was corrupt and it was Carl who helped Brian to eventually escape from Landy. Even though the brothers found it difficult to communicate with each other, Brian would have died without Carl's help.
Did anyone notice that the corvettes in the video are the ones from VH1's give away in the 80's. Now they sit in a garage somewhere in NY city falling apart owned by Peter Max the painter. What a sad waste of 36 corvettes(1953-1989)!
Done for the anniversary of the Corvette. One lucky bastard won a huge collection of Vettes from the '53 (the small white one at 0:44) all the way up to the eighties when this song came out, one from each model year!
@Helen25243 : try to find the Still Cruisin' album or the Lethal Weapon 2 soundtrack album. Both are out of print, but you should be ableto find a copy on Ebay. O, and it's also on the California Gold 2CD comp (1990, also OOP)
Brian wasn't really with the band much at all. Read about his life and descent. Anybody wanna talk about Manson?, and what a bad-ass Carl was?; Kickin Manson out of Dennis's house when he'd all but abandoned it to Manson.. Carl Rocked!
@HollandSmile He was sitting on a corvette. The only difference was that he wasn't with the guys. Landy had him pose for pics and vids to send the boys for their video. Landy was such a creep. :- $
VH1 had some kinda contest where somoene could win several corvettes. I remember watching it back in the day. i think thats why they had the logo in the video.
The license plates on the cars read "V H 1"!! Funny thing is that V H 1 was the MOR/easy-listening/adult alternative to the youth-oriented M T V. It's like V H 1 sponsored the video only to play it endlessly that Summer. Very strange.
The song has some nice guitar sounds. And could have been a lot more embarrassing.
This song came out in 1989 along with a VH1 contest to win 36 Corvettes--one for each year from 1953 to'89. That's why there was a VH1 plate on that Corvette at 2:40. BTW, does anyone know who won?
I was just telling my friend about this video and contest the other day, hard to believe it's been 20 years, shes not even 20 yet. I use to see this vid on VH 1 all the time, I never did know who the winner was, maybe I could do an internet search.
That would be 37 'Vettes, not 36---but it would be interesting to know who won, and for that matter, how people entered. Can you imagine winning a Corvette? That would be amazing!
So that little "Baby, c'mon, get yourself in gear" was Al. I always thought it was Carl. This one and "Somewhere Near Japan" each provided Mike, Carl, Al, and Bruce with chances to be heard (on here Bruce is the one going, "nothing to lose so c'mon")...would've been better with some Brian vocals too, but we've got what we've got...
Ugh, They were really scraping the bottom of the barrel creatively with this, almost a complete re-write clone of "Kokomo". If it wasn't for Carl's little vocal ride on top of Mike and that nice 12-string solo it would be unlistenable. And Brian's nowhere to be found.
Thanks for sharing this anyway, never seen this video before..

Wonder if that Stingray at 2.40 got any suspension or frame damage being jumped like that? Maybe the film was sped up...?

Again, where the hell is Brian during a good song like this?

he is in the clip, although not with the group. He was definitely 'pasted in' at 0:49 (sitting on a rock) and maybe 2:57 (driving the car).
