I'll never forget where I was when he died. (Big Pine) So many people I love have died in airplane crashes. Even one great photograper and his wife near Lone Pine and many others. I always tell people, Don't buy an airplane! I know what your thinking but can't help it.
You can google and read the truth about the accident on line. The whole FAA final report is published for public viewing. It is wrong to listen to hear say and read old tabloid nonsense. The proof is in the pudding which is in the FAA report. John left a legacy in his music and in his life. To tarnish such a legacy is because of pure ignorance is a tragic sin.
This song is beautiful, this video put's tears in my eyes. I'm glad for the closure, for his kids & family. One day, I will return to Aspen. He has always been a favorite of mine. Close to my heart, I miss him. I was able to see him in concert at the end of his career & life. We are all better off because of John Denver, his legacy lives on. To me I like thinking he died the way he wanted to go. I could never see him old, or very sick. He had such a beautiful spirit & God took him home.
He had recieved a final warning for compliance and response to maintain his certification. While he was overdue that response, his licence had not yet been officialy taken. fuel selector location and the tendancy for right rudder aplication while making the selection was determined the most likely cause. fuel selection ended up between tanks and sucking air from the dry tank causing a lean out. Witnessed heard the engine pop and die and saw the craft bank hard right before rapidly decending. RIP
Thank you for posting this. Such a loss. He had many gifts. He didn't sit idle ery often. God Bless you for posting, and Bless his family. Rest in peace John.
You are truly an amazing person!! WOW...what you did in his honor I KNOW made him smile!! I never once believed the garbage and smears the media hype said I KNEW he was a more qualified pilot than most people are to drive a car!!! YOU brought closure on his accident and I will always be thankful for your posting. I would have been the happiest person in the world to have been able to have seen his live.......that dream never happened, but I will love him FOREVER...again....THANKS!!
@debyj1952 You missed a good concert - I went to 23 John Denver concerts over the years - my fist in 1972 and my last in 1996!!! He LOVED to come to Atlanta - and Atlanta loved him - at his heigth- selling out the 45,000 seat OMNI - 3 times in 3 days!!!!!
Thank you for posting the Truth!! It broke my heart that those who may not have liked him found pleasure in smearing his name and memory with false stories that they spread so generously. He was guilty only of not listening to the two pilots who KNEW the problem with that fuel switch, and for that he paid with his life. There was no need to say he was not qualified to be a pilot..he had more flight time than most folks have driving a car!!! Thank you for your hard work on this video!
@debyj1952 This was a labor of love!!!! I also planted 19,644 trees for the Georgia Forrestry commission between 1998 and 2003 in John Denver's honor!!! John Denver lived for 19,644 days (December 31, 1943 to October 12, 1997)!!!!!!
And Denver had over 2,500 hours of pilot experiance - in every type of flying machine - except helicopter - and he was working on that one!!!!! He was well qualified pilot!!!
Thank-you for posting this video and the NTSB report. JD was much more than a musician - An entrepreneur, a humanist, a philanthropist, environmentalist, & much more. He achieved more in his life than many people would in 10 or 100 lifetimes. JD, you are an amazing human being. I'm a pilot with about 20,000 hours. Reading many 'unqualified' aviation posts here, I am reminded what my mother used to say - if u don't know what you're talking about, be quiet, qualify those that do, listen & learn.
I grew up in the late 70s & early 80s (as a young child) & remember Denver from the Muppets & the Oh God movies & of course is music, such a shame he's gone regardless of whose fault it was.
Very good job (except you have to hit 'pause' alot to read everything). Only negative comment is that at :39 seconds into the film, that is not John's home in Starwood. I have actually been there. You can Google some pics of the outside and inside to verify.
An unlicensed pilot in an experimental aircraft. When will celebs learn, if a plane doesn't have at lest a couple of stewardesses on it, they shouldn't get on it? I know, commercial planes fall out of the sky now and then, but not as often as private ones, especially bad news private planes piloted by incompetents with money and a revoked license, or guys like Randy Hughes-Patsy Cline's "pilot," who had no instrument training.
@musicmandon1 - Denver was unlicesed due to his second DUI - and he had more than 2400 flight hours in several planes - including his Lear Jet - and a biplane he owned!!!! He was very competent pilot - he was simply in an "expermental" plane (ANY airplane NOT built on an assebly line is labeled EXPERIMENTAL") - that has had just bought!!!!! He was warned to change teh fuel switch - and this was what caused the accident!!!
Always disappoints me when in sorrow & anger someone thinks they need to punish someone else for the foolish mistake of the loved one they lost. It was John's error not the maker of the fuel valve. I can understand the sorrow, but some company was drug through a lawsuit it never deserved, making this a doubly sad story.
@h2otek - I agree completely - Denver was told TWICE to replace the fuel valve before flying the plane alone - they knew that in it's current position - he could never get to it if necessary!!!!!!! So this was just about 100% pilot error!!!! And the manufacturer was ready to stop making it anyhow - it was very outdated - and they already made an automatic valve that did not require you to manually turn the switch!!!!!! So they really didn't mind taking it off the market!!!
A pilot who thought he could do it all. I always wondered why my late uncle would always have the tanks topped off on a short hop from Houston to Austin. We had enough fuel to go to Denver.
@Earthlinked Thank You! It's hard for me(re the accident)so I'm only just now watching. I do appreciate tech details&other context of daughter & plans reaffirm my belief: Not suicide. Many details weren't provided in other bio/tributes I've seen. PBS' was fine film but info&talk about the crash is incomplete&wife not reassuring. But I don't want to focus on that so TY also for other parts re life&memorials- some of that is new to me too. Your loving effort helps me feel better now. FAaaaaaarOut!
@waynotway Few people knew that at the time of his death - RCA and Sony were fighting to get John Denver back into the recording studio!!!! He was NOT suicidal - he was over joyed - his career was back again!!!! As his brother Ron said "Anyone that thinks that John Denver would ever commit suicide - has their head up their ass!"
Also every year - they have a John Denver Music Festival in Aspen Colorado the second week in October - and of his all past bandmates are usually there!!!
This accident was the result of pilot arrogance and poor decision- making. If he was not going to fill the tanks, he should have put the fuel switch in the position for the tank with the most fuel ON THE GROUND. There was no reason to put himself in the condition that required using the fuel switch in the air.
@mikeoberg1 Actually - buy the time he bought the airplane - they had already made a fuel switch that does not require manual turning - it switches itself when the tank is empty!!!! It was on order!!!
I know that ship! I always bitched about that fuel control switch. I refuse to work on it!!! But, let's be honest. As much as I love Mr. Denver, his pilots certificate was REVOKED by the FAA. He should NOT have been flying that ship. =Stefan=
@chengloki YES - His certificate was revoked by the FAA due to a DUI in Aspen. He was due to go to court in January 1998. He PROBABLY felt that it was the last time he would be allowed to fly for a long time!!!!
@Earthlinked So what you are saying, is that Mr. Denver committed suicide! I refuse to believe that!! There must have been another reason. No pilot, in his right mind, would ever fly with his certificate revoked. Just the notification would stop him. No, I'm not a pilot. I am a certificated A&P. I have to know the FAR'S. =Stefan=
@chengloki =Stefan= - If you think that this video says that John Denver committed suicide - then you have missed the entire point of the video - if you happened to takethe time to read the words!! PERIOD!!!!
Google "Interfaces That Kill" (it's on AskTog.com). There you'll find out what killed John Denver. It wasn't lack of fuel, not exactly. It was the need to switch fuel tanks and the fact that the tiny plane required him to turn completely around to do so, which caused him to involuntarily press down on the right rudder (you will notice the same effecy in your car if you turn 90-120 degrees to your left while driving--please try it with the car in park). Lack of fuel doesn't cause you to veer.
@erismo23 Thanks for your comment - but read the words - it CLEARLY states in this video that the position of the fuel switch - (BEHIND the pilots seat) - was the leading cause of the accident. He was asked if he wanted to fill the tanks when he called to "ready" his Long EZ. He said NO. If he would have filled the tanks as all pilots SHOULD DO preflight - he would not have had the accident!! The NTSB found $2400 cash on his body. The position of the switch was a "major factor" in the accident.
@Earthlinked The previous pilot moved the fuel switch from the front left floor position in the aircraft cabin - to behind the pilots seat - becasue he ALWAYS flew with his wife or grown children - so with a pair of pliers - it was easy for them to turn the switch when necessary - as they were sitting in the rear seat. This is explained in the video - but you must read the words on each slide. It NEVER states that the lack of fuel was the cause of the accident. But thanks for watching!!!!!
@Earthlinked Ah, sorry, I was directing that to the commenters that didn't understand the accident. Since they obviously don't have any intention of stopping the video frame by frame I thought they could read a fairly brief overview of the accident. If you read my link you'll see that he checked the tanks. Nobody puts in 200 miles of fuel for a 20 mile flight (or whatever). ALL pilots do NOT top off fuel tanks before every flight. MOST pilots do NOT. This accident could have happened to anyone.
@erismo23 I understand - but this DOES NOT happen to all pilots - my brother is a pilot for NetJets and he has his own private airplane (A Piper) - and as he has always said - if you do not fill the tanks before taking off - then you do not take off - PERIOD - END OF STORY - NO DISCUSSION!!!!!! When you fly a private plane - 99% of the airports will fill the tanks for you - before you arrive!!!! This was offered to Denver - but nobody knows why he did not do this - this time. He usually did!!
The picture of the house was not John's house in Starwood. I have pictures of the real house including interior shots. Yoy can also see it in Google Earth.
@crazychiefwolf You heard wrong - no drugs were ever found - in the plane or in/on his body. There were MANY incorrect reports - because reporters did not ask - they simply made it up!! And he was NEVER a druggie - his drug use was limited to smoking a few joints in the early 1970's and he said he did not like it at all. His drug was LIFE!!!!!!!
Thanks for the excellent insights---I was stunned that Denver, being such an experienced pilot, could die in this manner, even with a exotic aircraft. I can see why pilots are so meticulous about their preflight rituals--one simple error can prove catastrophic. I was told by one pilot, he believe Denver panicked and violated the rule of always getting control of your aircraft---he said even if the engines fall off, get control of your aircraft--even if it meant ditching in the ocean.
@Sutterjack There is no question that Denver DID panic - the Pacific Coast Highway was about 300 feet away - and the Long EZ - has a glide slope (it can glide with no power) for several miles - he was close enough to land on the beach or the highway!! He never lost control of the airplane - he just spent too much time facing backwards, trying to move the fuel switch!!! And the "pilot error" was simple - he did not fill it with gas before taking off - which WAS offered to him!!!
This just goes to prove that slow and steady wins the race. What a stupid move on his part. Honestly. It's just another example of impetuous 'boys and their toys' and not wanting to wait. Typical impatient man. His poor kids.
JD is one of my fave solo artists . He sings what I feel , or helps me to hope to feel those feelings . We were very lucky to have had this man on earth .
I wish you would have spared us some of the graphic details, or at least warned us that some of the information might be distressing - I will always now be haunted by the image of how his life ended......not the way I want to remember John.
@clintsdatter This is a video of a brilliant man's unespected death!! You figure out a way to sugar coat it!!!! If you do not want to hear the truth - then don't ask for it by watching the video. The ending of all life is terrible - but it will happen to all of us. Don't expect the ending of John Denver's life to be any different. Although a brilliant entertainer with many gifts - he was a man like the rest of us and his death still saddens us all. I will miss the songs that were to be!
@Earthlinked his music will allways be remembered. but i did not really need to know in great detail what happened to him. is deing dead bad enough. great vid long live jd
@Earthlinked one correction ought to be made. JD is referred to as "poet laurite" of Colorado. I understand the intended meaning, but the correct spelling of the desired word is "laureate", thus "poet laureate". A small point perhaps, but take it please as intended - a kind correction, not a cruel dig. Thanks for posting this.
@Aromaticduck The name of this song is in large print on the very first page!!! "The Wings That Fly Us Home" From the "Spirit" album released in 1976.
@bellacat123456789 Probably not!! His hairstyle was designed by the RCA people - once he was under contract in them in the early 1970's - he NEVER wore that "dutch boy" hair style when he was younger!!!! I seriously doubt that his mother EVER call him "little Dutch boy" - and this style of haircust was only with him begining about 1972 - when he was 29 years old - (born December 31, 1943) and he did not like it at all - and only wore it for about 2 years. Erma, his mom, only called him John!
i got my eyes strained and got to stop this wonderful song to read so so many times. learn to make video n put yourself in the watchers seat but i m appreciate your intention
@travisdt Too many details to cut out - too many things that were necessary to completely understand what happened!!!!!!!!! Sorry - but the knowledge is worth the eye strain!!!!
@Earthlinked : rammfantasy is a simpleton trying to invoke responses. You know, the type of person ppl love to laugh "at", .... as he thinks ppl are laughing "with" him. So lighten up man, ... it's cool. ... & thanx 4 posting this info regarding JD.
Thank you for this.I've been trying to correct the erroneous assumption that many people have that JD killed himself or was loaded, but it's hard to give ALL the facts. Now I have a link I can direct people to.I still miss him.
Another question that maybe the pilots reading this can answer-why did John not parachute or have some kind of eject seat when he realized he was in trouble? Was the altitude too low? I just remember him telling Ray Martin that when he said 'eject' -'no' was not an option.
@ScattySafari Why not eject? 1) Too low - but could have survivied - he was at 500 feet over water!! 2) They weigh THOUSANDS of pounds - with this aircraft - each pound is accounted for!! 3) The ejection seat would have to be powered - the propeller is on the back of the airplane - so you need a boost to clear the propeller!! 4) You'll need explosive bolts to get the canopy out of the way. 5) A powered ejection seat cost about $175,000. The LONG EZ cost $65,000!! OR simply FILL THE GAS TANKS!!!
@Earthlinked Thanks for that.I thought that might be the case-too complex & costly for a machine of this size.Do you know if parachuting would have been possible?I know it all could have been avoided through filling the petrol tanks-I'm just curious if there was anything John could have done once he realized he was in trouble.I apologize to other fans if this seems morbid-I guess I just want to know that there was nothing John could have done & it was mercifully quick.
@ScattySafari Parachuting IS possible - but not probable - as it would probably be as expensive as the airplane itself. THe top canopy opens left to right - it does not slide back - and the propeller is at the bakc of the plane - so ANY parachute would have to be powered to clear the class and the prop - doable - but very expensive!!! You would have to put a $250,000 "jump seat" with a parachute in a $65,000 airplane!!!!!!! Easier to simply fill the damn tanks!!!!!!
A beautiful and touching tribute to a wonderful artist! A voice from Heaven that was called back to sing for the Lord God Almighty! Rest in Peace John. Your music lives on in the hearts of your adoring fans forever! Thank you for this very enlightening and truthful video~
Thanks for the video...I lived in San Jose when that happened..when I heard it..I went into my garage and cried my heart out..His death can still make me cry today..and I'm not ashamed to admit it...I don't love men..but I loved him..
La Muerte evidentemente no permite llevarse nada de este mundo, pero gente grande como esta tuvo la virtud de DEJAR para otros, una esperanza en un mundo mejor.
@siopsa ENGLISH: Death obviously cannot take anything from this world, but great people like this had the virtue of leave for others, a hope for the world best.
I really enjoyed the video even though it made no difference on the person that I came to respect through his music. I really miss his music and calm songs... A true fan in the Canadian Spirit. Rest in Peace.
I also enjoy J.D's music, but Chengloki is right; #1 pilot error was that he was flying illegally. No current medical certificate = not legal to fly. Also, I would be VERY SURPRISED if his license was not also revoked due to his TWO DUIs, because I understand that ONE DUI will get flying privileges revoked permanently but I guess he had a very good lawyer. (As is often the case, having a "good lawyer" turned out bad for all involved) . I won't even go into his estate suing the switch maker.
@diamondDave8845 His license WAS revolked - becasue his certificate was revolked!!! There were no lawyers involved - if you get 2 DUI's you license and certificate is revilked - PERIOD! He was to go to trial in January 1998 on this. The switch maker was sued by his estate and all existing switches were collected and destroyed and the switch is no longer made. Most of the switches were not in use - as it was a very poor switch!!!
@Earthlinked Yep, just alluding to Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook pg. F5 where R.M. says "..After Nov. 29, 1990 2 or more motor vehicle actions (e.g. DUI) within 3 yrs is grounds for revocation or suspension of a pilot certificate or rating....also grounds for denial of reapplication (for same) up to a year after the date of the last motor vehicle action..." so reapplication is normal, and I assumed a good lawyer would help, as he was scheduled for court in the near future-that's all
@diamondDave8845 Denver claimed he was not drunk - he had taken some pills that were prescribed to him through his doctor for a liver condition!! He was never tested - so odds are he would have beat the charge. I THINK that one DUI you will loose your certificate and must get a doctors approval - saying that you no longer drink ANYTHING - to get your certificate back. The pilots license - you simply start over - and that'll take about 18 months to get it back!!! A good lawyer CANNOT HURT!!!
@diamondDave8845 I think the John Denver knew that what he was doing was illegal - but he also loved flying - he had just bought the new plane a week before and it was being painted - and he knew that - chances were - after his trial in January - he would loose his pilots license for quite some time!!!! So he knew he was flying illegally - he had to - he knew the rules.
@diamondDave8845 1)Two DUI's - you loose your pilots license - PERIOD!! If you want it back - you start over with flying lessons - and earn another one!! No lawyers are involved, 2) The Denver estate DID sue the switch maker and all of the known inventory of switches that were NOT installed - were destroyed. If installed - the airplane owner was offered a replacement - FREE. 3) IMPOSSIBLE - not having a piece of paper can cause a plane crash!! Illegal - YES - cause of the crash - NO CHANCE!
Doing a simple thing like filling up before he took off that day and one wonders why he thought it wasn't necessary! It sure MAKES you wonder about all the decisions we make in LIFE!
I love John Denver and his music. But, there was something you left out. His pilot certificate was revoked (by the FAA) before his last flight. He should not have been flying that ship. I kinda have a theory. =Stefan=
@chengloki Yes because of the two DUIs and the upcoming trial his license was technically revoked on medical grounds I think. BUT JD never signed the papers from the FAA!!! So.... yes if it had been a larger airport his info would have come up with the plane number about the license, etc, but really irrelevant in the end cause he knew to fill the tanks & didn't & didn't listen to the test pilots to not fly the plane till the fuel switch was fixed!! This from an experienced pilot!! Never know why
@puck57 When the FAA revokes a certificate, it requires no acknowledging signature. Youre certificate (not a license) is revoked. End of story. You should know that. This is from an experienced A&P. I think that you had better review the FAR"s . And what difference whether it was a large airport, or a small airfield? He's still gone from us. Hey, I loved the man, but he screwed up. He paid for it, unfortunately, so did we. I have the 2011 edition of the FAR's. Do you? =Stefan=
@chengloki His certificate was revoked - but that had nothing to do with the accident. It was revoked for a second DUI in Aspen. He was to go to trial on this January 1998 - but died Oxtober 1997. I think weather his flying certificate (NOT his pilots license - a flying certificate is a health certificate from a doctor stating that Denver no longer used alcohol AT ALL - EVER!) was revoked or not - that had nothing whatsoever to do with the accident - which was the subject of this video.
You have given the world the true meaning of Love in nature's. You will always lives on my heart and the heart of many many nature's lover. The people needs to understand that is but one WORLD we call Earth. There is more flowers to be blooms, more trees to be planted and more love to each other to all brothers on this earth. I thanks you for all the contributions you gives to mankind's and most of all the love you brings to each fellow man.
@hillbillyboy1982 Send me a private message to my YouTube address - and I'll send you the picture!!! It is a picture of "Fat City" as they were known and John Denver. I have no idea where I got it - I have over 1,000 pictures of Denver at different point in his career!!!!!!!
JOHN DENVER THE BEST FRIEND A SONG EVER HAD.THANK YOU JOHN,WHENEVER I WANTED TO LEAVE LOUISIANA I WOULD PUT ON THE WILDLIFE CONCERT AND IN AN INSTANT BE IN THE MOUNTAINS.
Ruez: If he died and went to Hell? He's suffering now. But of which I hope in his young life he knew and asked Jesus to come into his heart and be Savior and Lord. If not it's all academic.
This was marvelous. John was one of the few modern singers that I could listen to with my parents that I didn't get grief about. I got to see him live as a graduation present from high school. We were third row center and he was doing his Evening With John Denver tour and he was marvelous. He introduced Calypso to us that night. Whatever his personal troubles may have been, his music touched all generations and still does. RIP John. I still listen, love you and miss you.
@rosemarie443 John Denver sang HUNDREDS of political songs throughout his careeer!!!!! He sang about Nixon, Agnew - Gary Hart and others!! Can you give me any information on the song?
@rosemarie443 I wonder if you mean "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream' - unless it's been removed (as so often happens when I like something). John is singing it in Wash. D.C. at a large gathering 1970s.
Rosemarie: as of this moment it's still there- - John Denver - The Strangest Dream - 1971 - is the title. sung at a peace march to Wash, protesting the Viet Nam war.
I had the pleasure of knowing JD for the last few years of his life. He was just a guy folks. neither god nor devil. He had the same life problems and joys everyone else has. Just listen to his music, think of how it captures your life, and let it make sense. If you don't like him, fine... It's not a requirement.

@TakaliOmega What a pleasure it must have been to know him and something I was only able to dream about since the 70's, but one day there will be that big concert in the heavens when we're all joined as one!
Your statement is put brilliantly - yes he was just a human being with a special gift that he shared with the world Peace to all
@dwindstar57 It was a pleasure. He was having a rough time when I met him. I had been a fan most of my life, and knowing him those last few years gave me a better insight into what made him who he was. He wasn't a "country boy" or a "superstar" in real life. He was a man who laughed, cried, worked, played, and did what he could to make his life as pleasant as possible. He wasn't perfect. He reacted to life the same way anyone else did.
@TakaliOmega I too had the pleasure of knowing JD, starting off back in ca. 1975 0r '76. I did some work on his Porsche (a 356) and had mainly a letter relationship up till about 1990. He was just as you call him: A human, imperfect, aware of it, and willing, ALWAYS willing to learn, to grow, to be better.

@Nikahnskwew This was years ago - probably early 1990's and I got the information from the Windstar web site - they used to have live chats on Saturday!!! I was told his Indian name was "Chimigwetch and that ment "he who sees eagles" in Chippewa. Is that not correct? I have seen "wetch" as eagle several times???
@hottropic1000 The MEDICAL definition from sterility is less that 10,000 sperm per ejaculate. The dictionary definition is "without germs" Most think that sterile means that you cannot have children - but there are different degrees of this.
@Ghost99535 I will answer for Earthlinked!! I know him- he won't mind!! The song is "The Wings That Fly Us Home" from JD's "Spirit:" album from '76 I believe. His good friend Joe Henry wrote the lyrics and JD wrote the music to it. They were an awesome pairl!!!
@puck57 Must have an inside track on YouTube - I did not get the question until after puck57 had answered it!! The name of the song is on the very first page of this video in big bold letters. And of course Puck57 is right - she is a Denver-ite as I am - (she is the "Nancy" mentioned on the last page - I am the "Jeff"!!) - and she is correct about this song!!! Never quiz her on John Denver - you'll only embarrass yourself!! Thanks puck!!
but he was supposed to be sterile so how come a daughter with Cassie was possible ???? but lets not stress the details ,a great performer but not much of a person off stage but we saw this 6ft something country boy as a symbol so lets not muss it.
@hottropic1000 There are Invetro Fertalization clinics all over America - My 3 daughters are all invetro babies - I live in Atlanta - where the #3 Invetro Clinic is located (according to live births per year)!!
Wanna guess where the #2 clinic is located? Denver, Colorado!!!! And it is EASY if it is the mans problem - they only need 1 sperm and there are about 1,200,000 sperm per ejaculate!!!!!! They will find just 1 - under a microscope and inject it directly into the egg of the woman!!!
@tenorismo Are you a tenor? Do you sing? Please don' t say things like that. A man died. Are you Jay Leno, he would say something like that. Love you Anne
John was a truthseeker and a peacemaker in addition to his musical genius and I believe he'd want the truth known. This video was clearly put together with love and respect and as a lifelong, forever fan, I thank you for sharing it. As his anniversary approaches, in remembrance of him, I wish you all Peace.
@Rkymtnmary Thank You!! I attended 23 John Denver concerts from 1971 to 1996 and loved every one of them!!! I have all of his ALBUMS - most tapes and all the CD's!! It is the music that would have been - that I miss the most!!! As he once wrote:
And oh I love the campfire - and the circle that I'm in.
The stories and the laughter - they should never ever end.
Forever in my memory - forever in my song!
On a San Juan mountain trail ride - I'll carry you along!!
@xiejianfa They have a get together every year in Aspen the first of October to celebrate his life. They have had one every year since 1998 - and they already have tickets on sale for this year at the Wheeler Opra House in Aspen!!!!!! It is a HOOT and a celebration of John Denver's music and his life - by those who know - his band mates!!!
@Earthlinked thanks for the info. I really appreciate that. But i am many thousands of mile across the ocean..one day i may attend this celebration! "We may be many miles apart, but his sweet memories and lovely songs will always be close in our hearts" . He had brought me many wonderful memories of yesteryears thro his beautiful songs...he's a legend , a simple country folk singer who had ever lived! God bless him.
@xiejianfa Come to the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen Colorado - free admission - open all year - see the magnificent stones!!! Bring a picnic!!! Always full of John Denver fans!!! Come when you can - we'll wait for you - even if it takes years!!!!!
@Earthlinked yes, I'll remember this invitation....you're so kind. His songs have brought people all over this world as one esp on protecting the wildlife and environment. perhaps, one day, I'll be there.
@xiejianfa Take your time - we'll be waiting for you!!!! Plan a week - a few miles down the road is WindStar!!!!! You can go see "Spirit" the statue of John!!! Denver's house was sold in 1999 - so it is no longer something to see - a private family bought it - and there prefer their privacy, which we give them - no questions asked. Then off to California and Monterey Bay, to see the monument/plaque with Denver's likeness - the location of the crash - now called John Devner Beach!!
I liked John Denver a lot before I found your slide show. But you have increased my respect and admiration for JD many-fold.
Those are really excellent photos that show him at his very best. I thank you very much for your work that showcases the world wide appeal of John and his music and the messages in his music. Thanks again, great work.
This was a nice tribute. However, with all due respect, and respect those in his circle of family and friends, I would have left out the details of the impact to his body. To me it's just details for the voyeur, and not fitting for his memory. We don't need to know and his friends and family shouldn't be caught off guard. They have children, also, who may view this. Please consider if you care for his legacy.
@rancar29 Read past comments - it started off with little about the accident - but people asked over and over for more information. It is the truth and that cannot be stopped. Better to read it honestly from a true fan - than in some rag magazine!!!! It was a coin flip - I decided people should know - honestly and without glorification!!!!
@rancar29 Sure I see you point. But those closest to JD knew from the initial reports the status of the recovery and the condition of the body, etc. Certainly Annie who requested the cremation, Ron and I am sure indirectly even his mom. And the kids- certainly the older two at the time would have been aware of a lot of the details- they would want to know. Nice to read- NO- but if the honest answers help to end false rumors then I think those closest to JD would approve-of setting it straight.
@rancar29 Trust me on this one - his freinds and family HOPE that they get details - would you really want to know that he died and never know how or why? They go teh same coronors reports and NTBS reports that I have - and a few things are not pretty - nothing about the accident is pretty - but it happened and most want to know the why and how it happened!!! Sorry if this offends you - but read teh comments - 99% want to know!!
@gjerrildkro The only flying license that John Denver did NOT have - was for helicopters - and at the time fo his death - he was working on that one!!!!!!!
Flying does not allow for a casual attitude. Factors add up to disaster. Failure to take off with full tanks, lack of pilot training, ridiculous positioning of fuel switch.
Thanks also for including our John Denver Bench in Norfolk England, it was a lovely surprise to see it there.
The bench was put in the nature reserve by me & my wife Val in 2006. Every year the Friends of John Denver Uk have a picnic there to remember John & his music, a day of great friendship.
@willowfieldsp I LOVE THE BENCH - YOU ARE MY HEROES - and I have followed your story for years!!!! A GREAT story and a wonderful tribute to John Denver - and your bench is on my bucket list - I will visit it - before my wings take me home!!!! (I live in Atlanta Georgia, USA) Thank you dearly for this wonderful treasure!!! (And of course I am a member of FOJD.org.uk - Tell Christine Moon - AtlantaJeff said HELLO!!!!!!!) BLESS YOU ALL!!!!!
@thomasbaron06 All because of a KNOWN BAD fuel switch - that SHOULD have been replaced years ago - but was not - and SHOULD have been put in a location that can be reached by the pilot - but was not - and SHOULD have been replaced before he flew - but was not!!!!! In avaition - you only get so many mistakes before they all add up to an accident that causes a catastrophic event - like this one!!!!

RIP

Earthlinked 3 weeks ago

An unlicensed pilot in an experimental aircraft. When will celebs learn, if a plane doesn't have at lest a couple of stewardesses on it, they shouldn't get on it? I know, commercial planes fall out of the sky now and then, but not as often as private ones, especially bad news private planes piloted by incompetents with money and a revoked license, or guys like Randy Hughes-Patsy Cline's "pilot," who had no instrument training.
musicmandon1 2 months ago
@musicmandon1 - Denver was unlicesed due to his second DUI - and he had more than 2400 flight hours in several planes - including his Lear Jet - and a biplane he owned!!!! He was very competent pilot - he was simply in an "expermental" plane (ANY airplane NOT built on an assebly line is labeled EXPERIMENTAL") - that has had just bought!!!!! He was warned to change teh fuel switch - and this was what caused the accident!!!
Earthlinked 2 months ago
Always disappoints me when in sorrow & anger someone thinks they need to punish someone else for the foolish mistake of the loved one they lost. It was John's error not the maker of the fuel valve. I can understand the sorrow, but some company was drug through a lawsuit it never deserved, making this a doubly sad story.
h2otek 2 months ago
@h2otek - I agree completely - Denver was told TWICE to replace the fuel valve before flying the plane alone - they knew that in it's current position - he could never get to it if necessary!!!!!!! So this was just about 100% pilot error!!!! And the manufacturer was ready to stop making it anyhow - it was very outdated - and they already made an automatic valve that did not require you to manually turn the switch!!!!!! So they really didn't mind taking it off the market!!!
Earthlinked 2 months ago
A pilot who thought he could do it all. I always wondered why my late uncle would always have the tanks topped off on a short hop from Houston to Austin. We had enough fuel to go to Denver.

@Earthlinked Thank You! It's hard for me(re the accident)so I'm only just now watching. I do appreciate tech details&other context of daughter & plans reaffirm my belief: Not suicide. waynotway 3 months ago
Also every year - they have a John Denver Music Festival in Aspen Colorado the second week in October - and of his all past bandmates are usually there!!!

adaandvictor 3 months ago
This accident was the result of pilot arrogance and poor decision- making. If he was not going to fill the tanks, he should have put the fuel switch in the position for the tank with the most fuel ON THE GROUND. There was no reason to put himself in the condition that required using the fuel switch in the air.
mikeoberg1 3 months ago
@mikeoberg1 Actually - buy the time he bought the airplane - they had already made a fuel switch that does not require manual turning - it switches itself when the tank is empty!!!! It was on order!!!

I know that ship! I always bitched about that fuel control switch. I refuse to work on it!!! But, let's be honest. As much as I love Mr. Denver, his pilots certificate was REVOKED by the FAA. He should NOT have been flying that ship. =Stefan=
chengloki 3 months ago
@chengloki YES - His certificate was revoked by the FAA due to a DUI in Aspen. He was due to go to court in January 1998. He PROBABLY felt that it was the last time he would be allowed to fly for a long time!!!!
Earthlinked 3 months ago
@Earthlinked So what you are saying, is that Mr. Denver committed suicide! I refuse to believe that!! There must have been another reason. No pilot, in his right mind, would ever fly with his certificate revoked. Just the notification would stop him. No, I'm not a pilot. I am a certificated A&P. I have to know the FAR'S. =Stefan=
chengloki 3 months ago
@chengloki =Stefan= - If you think that this video says that John Denver committed suicide - then you have missed the entire point of the video - if you happened to takethe time to read the words!! PERIOD!!!!
Earthlinked 3 months ago
Google "Interfaces That Kill" (it's on AskTog.com). There you'll find out what killed John Denver. It wasn't lack of fuel, not exactly. It was the need to switch fuel tanks and the fact that the tiny plane required him to turn completely around to do so, which caused him to involuntarily press down on the right rudder (you will notice the same effecy in your car if you turn 90-120 degrees to your left while driving--please try it with the car in park). Lack of fuel doesn't cause you to veer.
erismo23 3 months ago
@erismo23 Thanks for your comment - but read the words - it CLEARLY states in this video that the position of the fuel switch - (BEHIND the pilots seat) - was the leading cause of the accident. He was asked if he wanted to fill the tanks when he called to "ready" his Long EZ. He said NO. If he would have filled the tanks as all pilots SHOULD DO preflight - he would not have had the accident!! The NTSB found $2400 cash on his body. The position of the switch was a "major factor" in the accident.
Earthlinked 3 months ago
@Earthlinked The previous pilot moved the fuel switch from the front left floor position in the aircraft cabin - to behind the pilots seat - becasue he ALWAYS flew with his wife or grown children - so with a pair of pliers - it was easy for them to turn the switch when necessary - as they were sitting in the rear seat. This is explained in the video - but you must read the words on each slide. It NEVER states that the lack of fuel was the cause of the accident. But thanks for watching!!!!!
Earthlinked 3 months ago
@Earthlinked Ah, sorry, I was directing that to the commenters that didn't understand the accident. Since they obviously don't have any intention of stopping the video frame by frame I thought they could read a fairly brief overview of the accident. If you read my link you'll see that he checked the tanks. Nobody puts in 200 miles of fuel for a 20 mile flight (or whatever). ALL pilots do NOT top off fuel tanks before every flight. MOST pilots do NOT. This accident could have happened to anyone.
erismo23 3 months ago
@erismo23 I understand - but this DOES NOT happen to all pilots - my brother is a pilot for NetJets and he has his own private airplane (A Piper) - and as he has always said - if you do not fill the tanks before taking off - then you do not take off - PERIOD - END OF STORY - NO DISCUSSION!!!!!! When you fly a private plane - 99% of the airports will fill the tanks for you - before you arrive!!!! This was offered to Denver - but nobody knows why he did not do this - this time. He usually did!!

crazychiefwolf 4 months ago
@crazychiefwolf You heard wrong - no drugs were ever found - in the plane or in/on his body. There were MANY incorrect reports - because reporters did not ask - they simply made it up!! And he was NEVER a druggie - his drug use was limited to smoking a few joints in the early 1970's and he said he did not like it at all. His drug was LIFE!!!!!!!
Earthlinked 4 months ago 11
Thanks for the excellent insights---I was stunned that Denver, being such an experienced pilot, could die in this manner, even with a exotic aircraft. I can see why pilots are so meticulous about their preflight rituals--one simple error can prove catastrophic. I was told by one pilot, he believe Denver panicked and violated the rule of always getting control of your aircraft---he said even if the engines fall off, get control of your aircraft--even if it meant ditching in the ocean.
Sutterjack 4 months ago
@Sutterjack There is no question that Denver DID panic - the Pacific Coast Highway was about 300 feet away - and the Long EZ - has a glide slope (it can glide with no power) for several miles - he was close enough to land on the beach or the highway!! He never lost control of the airplane - he just spent too much time facing backwards, trying to move the fuel switch!!! And the "pilot error" was simple - he did not fill it with gas before taking off - which WAS offered to him!!!

ScattySafari 5 months ago
@ScattySafari Why not eject? 1) Too low - but could have survivied - he was at 500 feet over water!! 2) They weigh THOUSANDS of pounds - with this aircraft - each pound is accounted for!! 3) The ejection seat would have to be powered - the propeller is on the back of the airplane - so you need a boost to clear the propeller!! 4) You'll need explosive bolts to get the canopy out of the way. 5) A powered ejection seat cost about $175,000. The LONG EZ cost $65,000!! OR simply FILL THE GAS TANKS!!!
Earthlinked 5 months ago
@Earthlinked Thanks for that.I thought that might be the case-too complex & costly for a machine of this size.Do you know if parachuting would have been possible?I know it all could have been avoided through filling the petrol tanks-I'm just curious if there was anything John could have done once he realized he was in trouble.I apologize to other fans if this seems morbid-I guess I just want to know that there was nothing John could have done & it was mercifully quick.
ScattySafari 5 months ago
@ScattySafari Parachuting IS possible - but not probable - as it would probably be as expensive as the airplane itself. THe top canopy opens left to right - it does not slide back - and the propeller is at the bakc of the plane - so ANY parachute would have to be powered to clear the class and the prop - doable - but very expensive!!! You would have to put a $250,000 "jump seat" with a parachute in a $65,000 airplane!!!!!!! Easier to simply fill the damn tanks!!!!!!

I won't even go into his estate suing the switch maker.
diamondDave8845 7 months ago
@diamondDave8845 His license WAS revolked - becasue his certificate was revolked!!! There were no lawyers involved - if you get 2 DUI's you license and certificate is revilked - PERIOD! He was to go to trial in January 1998 on this. The switch maker was sued by his estate and all existing switches were collected and destroyed and the switch is no longer made. Most of the switches were not in use - as it was a very poor switch!!!
Earthlinked 7 months ago
@Earthlinked Yep, just alluding to Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook pg. F5 where R.M. says "..After Nov. 29, 1990 2 or more motor vehicle actions (e.g. DUI) within 3 yrs is grounds for revocation or suspension of a pilot certificate or rating....also grounds for denial of reapplication (for same) up to a year after the date of the last motor vehicle action..." so reapplication is normal, and I assumed a good lawyer would help, as he was scheduled for court in the near future-that's all
diamondDave8845 7 months ago
@diamondDave8845 Denver claimed he was not drunk - he had taken some pills that were prescribed to him through his doctor for a liver condition!! He was never tested - so odds are he would have beat the charge. I THINK that one DUI you will loose your certificate and must get a doctors approval - saying that you no longer drink ANYTHING - to get your certificate back. The pilots license - you simply start over - and that'll take about 18 months to get it back!!! A good lawyer CANNOT HURT!!!
Earthlinked 7 months ago
@diamondDave8845 I think the John Denver knew that what he was doing was illegal - but he also loved flying - he had just bought the new plane a week before and it was being painted - and he knew that - chances were - after his trial in January - he would loose his pilots license for quite some time!!!! So he knew he was flying illegally - he had to - he knew the rules.
Earthlinked 7 months ago
@diamondDave8845 1)Two DUI's - you loose your pilots license - PERIOD!! If you want it back - you start over with flying lessons - and earn another one!! No lawyers are involved, 2) The Denver estate DID sue the switch maker and all of the known inventory of switches that were NOT installed - were destroyed. If installed - the airplane owner was offered a replacement - FREE. 3) IMPOSSIBLE - not having a piece of paper can cause a plane crash!! Illegal - YES - cause of the crash - NO CHANCE!

I love John Denver and his music. But, there was something you left out. His pilot certificate was revoked (by the FAA) before his last flight. He should not have been flying that ship. I kinda have a theory. =Stefan=
chengloki 8 months ago
@chengloki Yes because of the two DUIs and the upcoming trial his license was technically revoked on medical grounds I think. BUT JD never signed the papers from the FAA!!! So.... yes if it had been a larger airport his info would have come up with the plane number about the license, etc, but really irrelevant in the end cause he knew to fill the tanks & didn't & didn't listen to the test pilots to not fly the plane till the fuel switch was fixed!! This from an experienced pilot!! Never know why
puck57 7 months ago
@puck57 When the FAA revokes a certificate, it requires no acknowledging signature. Youre certificate (not a license) is revoked. End of story. You should know that. This is from an experienced A&P. I think that you had better review the FAR"s . And what difference whether it was a large airport, or a small airfield? He's still gone from us. Hey, I loved the man, but he screwed up. He paid for it, unfortunately, so did we. I have the 2011 edition of the FAR's. Do you? =Stefan=
chengloki 7 months ago
@chengloki His certificate was revoked - but that had nothing to do with the accident. It was revoked for a second DUI in Aspen. He was to go to trial on this January 1998 - but died Oxtober 1997. I think weather his flying certificate (NOT his pilots license - a flying certificate is a health certificate from a doctor stating that Denver no longer used alcohol AT ALL - EVER!) was revoked or not - that had nothing whatsoever to do with the accident - which was the subject of this video.

John Denver sang one pollitical song and i heard it only one time but i would like to find it, do any of you out there know the name of it.
rosemarie443 1 year ago
@rosemarie443 John Denver sang HUNDREDS of political songs throughout his careeer!!!!! He sang about Nixon, Agnew - Gary Hart and others!! Can you give me any information on the song?
Earthlinked 1 year ago
@rosemarie443 I wonder if you mean "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream' - unless it's been removed (as so often happens when I like something). John is singing it in Wash. D.C. at a large gathering 1970s.
CATniteOwl 1 year ago

Your statement is put brilliantly - yes he was just a human being with a special gift that he shared with the world Peace to all
dwindstar57 1 year ago
@dwindstar57 It was a pleasure. He was having a rough time when I met him. I had been a fan most of my life, and knowing him those last few years gave me a better insight into what made him who he was. He wasn't a "country boy" or a "superstar" in real life. He was a man who laughed, cried, worked, played, and did what he could to make his life as pleasant as possible. He wasn't perfect. He reacted to life the same way anyone else did.
I posted a slideshow of my favorite song today.
TakaliOmega 1 year ago
@TakaliOmega I too had the pleasure of knowing JD, starting off back in ca. 1975 0r '76. I did some work on his Porsche (a 356) and had mainly a letter relationship up till about 1990. He was just as you call him: A human, imperfect, aware of it, and willing, ALWAYS willing to learn, to grow, to be better.
He is still missed...

Earthlinked 1 year ago
but do you know what sterile means ??? better have a chat to your wife I think
hottropic1000 1 year ago
@hottropic1000 The MEDICAL definition from sterility is less that 10,000 sperm per ejaculate. The dictionary definition is "without germs" Most think that sterile means that you cannot have children - but there are different degrees of this.
Earthlinked 1 year ago
@Earthlinked Could you tell the name of this song and if he had written it.
Ghost99535 11 months ago
@Ghost99535 I will answer for Earthlinked!! I know him- he won't mind!! The song is "The Wings That Fly Us Home" from JD's "Spirit:" album from '76 I believe. His good friend Joe Henry wrote the lyrics and JD wrote the music to it. They were an awesome pairl!!!
puck57 11 months ago
@puck57 Must have an inside track on YouTube - I did not get the question until after puck57 had answered it!! The name of the song is on the very first page of this video in big bold letters. And of course Puck57 is right - she is a Denver-ite as I am - (she is the "Nancy" mentioned on the last page - I am the "Jeff"!!) - and she is correct about this song!!! Never quiz her on John Denver - you'll only embarrass yourself!! Thanks puck!!
Earthlinked 11 months ago
but he was supposed to be sterile so how come a daughter with Cassie was possible ???? but lets not stress the details ,a great performer but not much of a person off stage but we saw this 6ft something country boy as a symbol so lets not muss it.
hottropic1000 1 year ago
@hottropic1000 There are Invetro Fertalization clinics all over America - My 3 daughters are all invetro babies - I live in Atlanta - where the #3 Invetro Clinic is located (according to live births per year)!!
Wanna guess where the #2 clinic is located? Denver, Colorado!!!! And it is EASY if it is the mans problem - they only need 1 sperm and there are about 1,200,000 sperm per ejaculate!!!!!! They will find just 1 - under a microscope and inject it directly into the egg of the woman!!!

Earthlinked 1 year ago

His songs have brought people all over this world as one esp on protecting the wildlife and environment. perhaps, one day, I'll be there.
xiejianfa 1 year ago

Please consider if you care for his legacy.
rancar29 1 year ago
@rancar29 Read past comments - it started off with little about the accident - but people asked over and over for more information. It is the truth and that cannot be stopped. Better to read it honestly from a true fan - than in some rag magazine!!!! It was a coin flip - I decided people should know - honestly and without glorification!!!!
Earthlinked 1 year ago
@rancar29 Sure I see you point. But those closest to JD knew from the initial reports the status of the recovery and the condition of the body, etc. Certainly Annie who requested the cremation, Ron and I am sure indirectly even his mom. And the kids- certainly the older two at the time would have been aware of a lot of the details- they would want to know. Nice to read- NO- but if the honest answers help to end false rumors then I think those closest to JD would approve-of setting it straight.
puck57 1 year ago

Thanks for this great tribute to John Denver.
Thanks again Paul & Val, Norfolk, England.

damn, that's sad,
such an awesome man with an awesome voice who made such beautiful music should not have been taken from this world so soon,
all because of a goddamn fuel switch =''(,
Rest in Peace john Denver,
we love you and miss you
thomasbaron06 1 year ago
@thomasbaron06 All because of a KNOWN BAD fuel switch - that SHOULD have been replaced years ago - but was not - and SHOULD have been put in a location that can be reached by the pilot - but was not - and SHOULD have been replaced before he flew - but was not!!!!! In avaition - you only get so many mistakes before they all add up to an accident that causes a catastrophic event - like this one!!!!
Earthlinked 1 year ago
@Earthlinked i know,
the same thing happened to howard hughes i think back in the early 50s' ,
whenever it was the sf-11 was built,
there was an imbalance in the twin engine fuel tanks and the left engine went down and he crashed into an apartment complex somewhere,
it nearly killed him,
but omg, why did such a thing as this have to happen to such a great man lik John Denver? ='(
