  • Burton splendid singing live as usual

  • Wow, Freddie Mercury, Elvin Bishop, Jeff Porcaro, haven't pegged the bass player and rhythm guitarist, anybody ??

  • That ES is sick cool and he's playing it great :)

  • will ferrell should cover this!!!

  • Lead guitar....Kurt Winter, r.i.p. man.

  • the lead is badass...funky cool badass

  • The audience is a bunch of mannequins apparently.

  • i didnt know Ron Burgandy was in The Guess Who :o

  • Good vídeo

  • Who cares what they look like? The great music doesn't come from their looks.

  • this is a legndary performance fucking a son

  • Whenever I hear this song, I think of that scene in American Beauty with Lester in the drivethru with his music cranked up and the car filled with pot smoke....lol!

  • Ooh...I just saw the last part of this video where Burton Cummings introduces the band members and the guitarist on the left ISN'T Randy Bachman!! :-O

    Huh??? :-\

Where was Randy during this appearance on "The Midnight Special"???

  • @dibber43 Bachman was long gone by the the time the Guess Who played on the Midnight Special in 1974. Randy Bachman left the Guess Who in 1970 and was replaced by Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw.

  • Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman and "The Guess Who"...

    Hall of Fame band...for sure!!!!!!

    Just a fantastic band!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember this episode of Midnight Special. Burton Cummings had cleaned himself up tremendousy and looked a lot different from the early days. If you look at some of the pre-1970 videos of this band, you can see he definitely did look like a hippie Jim Morrison-like dude. Why the image change? I don't know but he probably wanted to nail more American Women and they required that you take a bath!

  • Burton cuts his hair, grows a moustache, puts on a leisure suit, and ends up looking like The Doobie Brothers' Tom Johnston doing a Burt Reynolds impersonation.

  • FIRST TIME IVE SEEN THIS.. BUT THESE CATS I KNEW ARE GREAT LIVE ...ESPECIALLY BURTON ...WOW !!

  • Great live version of a great song - who cares if Burton was planning to attend a costume party after the show - dressed as Pat Boone.

  • thats what u get from winnipeg

  • What a sensational performance people.

  • Unbleievable voice. If this voice in ANY package appeared in modern music, well, it would be a giant hit again. I think he looks like a giant Freddie Mercury.

  • They really toned it down for this show. Great band

  • looks like Tom Jones made love to Freddie Mercury and had this peckerhead..great song though

  • mann kurt winter had the vibe there man.....shit i was in aww......perfect performance

  • աստղային.

  • That lead guitar is SWEET!!!

  • @eldominicanosindudas Kurt Winter! He covers more ground than Randy Did!! :D

  • @oatstao I agree....prefer Kurt's live playing to Randy's. That being said, Randy wrote some great licks and tunes.

  • Burton Cummings' voice was to be reckoned with. His style was memorable as a great focal point of an unforgettable era.

  • One great talent------Burton Cummings!

  • The best change of image in a history of rock'n'roll!

  • Forget the bullshit about the moustache. Cummings's voice is magnificent -- and that's what matters.

  • great song

  • It sure is strange to watch this and not see Randy playing lead guitar, and playing just rhythm...almost diconcerting lol

  • I don't think I've ever seen a voice NOT match a man's appearance this much in all my life! LOL

Even though I've heard The Guess Who's classics on the radio for decades, I hadn't seen Burton Cummings until this video. From the sound of the voice I pictured a wild, hippie Jim Morrison-like dude, not a giant Burt Reynolds.

  • @tonusaitis this is when Burton Cummings was entering his lounge lizard period. If you see earlier pictures when this song was recorded he has big curly past shoulder length hair&definately dressed more like a hippie.A lady who was our camp weekend cook was from Winnipeg, and remembers being at a party where Burton Cummings was wearing only a pair of red Stanfields long underwear with the trap door in the back.Still one of the best voices in rock....great writer too, imho.....

  • @tonusaitis go back to about 1969-70 and Burton Cummings was indeed a hippie Jim Morrison-like dude. I think he actually envisioned himself to be Jim Morrison-like.

  • @tonusaitis Haaaa. Great one.

  • @tonusaitis lol.. i agree, he looks like a very angry burt reynolds

  • @tonusaitis try claudio sanchez....from coheed and cambria

  • @tonusaitis Very funny comment..... Earlier pics he did look crazed but apparently watched too many Smokey and The Bandit movies......

  • @tonusaitis The only more surprising one I can think of is Aaron Neville. Watching a video of his still surprises me. Haha.

  • @tonusaitis

at your comment of the voice not matching the artist. go check out the vids for "Foxy - Get Off" I could have sworn it was a woman singing that or even women in the background .

  • @tonusaitis so thats so true and very funny... john mayell also, i though he was a black man obviously before i saw him

  • @tonusaitis He did look like a typical hippy in the late 60s, & the first few yrs of the 70s, look at pics from 68-75-hard to believe it's the same guy-but the all white pimp suit is priceless

  • @tonusaitis that made mu chuckle loudly! :)

  • @tonusaitis And I always thought he was black....

  • @tonusaitis and today sadly producers would probably have deemed his looks "unfitting" and no one would have heard his songs :/

  • I remember when I was around eight I think I had The Greatest Hits 8 Track tape and one weekend my family and I went up to see my Aunt and Uncle up in Pittsburgh....I played that tape to death...I played it so much that someone actually hid it from me and I never did find it.....I'm sure they probably threw it out because they got tired of hearing it....Thank Goodness for CDS :-)

  • The Guy on the red Guitar is the Late Kurt Winter....

  • i remember this time period. Burton looked like "Burt Reynolds"

    great song

  • not their best version...

  • Gotta love the guitar solo :')

  • Too funny, Burton looks like a dark-haired Vivian Stanshall here...who's the guy on bass guitar, at any rate?

  • Polyester and classic rock... it don't get much better than this. "Sweet"

  • As a Canadian I love this band and I love this song and what it stands for..

  • That's Jack Black's father playing red lead electric guitar, FYI.

  • @EyeDreamMellowDees afraid not.... his father was and engineer of some kind.

  • This one case of where the lead guitarist gets less pussy than the rest of the band

  • I miss shows like this, when it was the only way to see your favorite band. No MTV or internet. Something about the anticipation was fun.

  • This is good. I'm from this era. Burton can sing! Loved the "Stand Tall" single. Wow, what a voice. Let's see if that shit today can sing like that! I doubt it. They're too busy raping, killing, stealing and looking sexy to feel music and sing it from the heart. Todays music is trash. No wonder kids are so messed up! Yesterday's music is class, soul, heart, feeling, depth and just plain GROOVY!

  • Bass Ass Guitar Solo!!!!

  • what a nerd cut his hair and a suit

  • I love the look the song and the band. I truly hope rock makes a comeback. Someplace where artist can last for years putting out great songs. There are so few bands that have quality cuts on their releases. I almost said albums.

  • Liesure Suit Larry singing too! Saw these dudes Gold Creek Rock Festival in Woodinville Washington back 40 years ago. And ya know, I took their advice and am married to a Canadian. Heavy tune then, heavy tune today. Oh, sorry if I offended anyone. :)

  • This was a "warm-up session" developed to have the band "jammin" when they hit the stage, they needed a filler song to complete the 45 flip-side but had none

so they chopped, cut and taped(the clear stuff) a 25 min. session down to the masterpeice we now love. hence the name, which until I learned the truth though it was named for the artistic monsterosity the song exudes.

P.S. THIS DAVE GUY BELOW IS JUST A TROLL, eeewww troll slime,

  • I can remember the very first time I heard this song and I thought "Oh no the Americans are not going to like this at all" because it is the biggest insult song ever written

But now living here in Arizona I hear it on the radio EVERY DAY

I just don't get it...I guess all the Americans are just listening to the chorus....AND THEY JUST WILL NEVER GET IT

I thought when the Guess Who ever played this in the USA they would get beaten

If I never hear it again it will be too soon.

  • @DaveScarcella Hey Dave two things 1) why don't you do back to whatever third world country that you immigrated from.2)There is nothing to get. It is music not Hannity and Colmes

  • Burton Cummings made The Guess Who a great band.

  • This is way back when know one used to jump around & headbang to the music ! I love this song & band though :)

  • Robert Goulet's sideline job after his first run in Camelot was singing with the Guess Who.

  • Wow. Makes Lenny Kravitz's version seem very lame. Outstanding.

  • Burton Reynolds--lol...Kurt Black--hehe

  • Kurt Winter kinda look like Jack Black....

Let me put it this way..JB looks like Winter ;)

  • @TheWolvorine lol...so true...but u gotta like Chad smith and Will Ferrell as separated at birth.

  • Winter,guitar.Peterson,drums,Cummings Vocals,Thats The Guess Who.......

  • Little Chubby i mean!

  • That guy from My name is earl.... With that Huge mustage ..... Look´s so identic like this guy ....Soo funny

  • hey its ron burgndy san diago news

  • No Randy Bachman = No Guess Who.

  • lol man some of you guys are some funny dudes below.. some clever comments. However, The Guess Who are phenomenal. Ridiculous really.

  • Louie Anderson on Lead Axe

  • saw them live in n.z. -- i've seen many top bands but the guess who really rocked, three dog night came on after the guess who and they were nowhere as good, in fact a lot of people left, the g.w were a very hard act to follow.

  • one of the great Rock and Roll voices.....todays crap is crap.

  • "Freddie? Freddie Mercury? You know that new 'look' you were searching for? Well, check this out!"

  • @locrian38 Funny!

  • Burton Cummings!

  • Great band, great song...I understand that Pat Nixon didn't agree tho...

  • Guess Who producer, and my grandfather Jack Richardsons funeral was today. R.I.P Grampa

  • Zeppelin, funky sound here

  • Smokey & The Bandit come to mind lol, Great song by A Great Band :) .. thanks for posting :)

  • Sounds good but WTF???!!! He looks like a disco douche bag!!!

  • Just doesent quite work, does it ??

  • funny to see burton looking like a disco dude. but fantastic to see kurt winter live. as a young player, i was astounded at his tone and his style. god bless him.

  • @murphstrings He looks like Gene Hackman's son

  • a look of looser but what lesson of rock n roll riff!!

  • This was after Bachman left the band.

  • I've heard this song forever but I never ever would've guessed this is what these guys looked like.

  • Kurt Winter,what a great talent.Damn he was good.

  • I had this record, I ordered it when you could buy 12 for 1cent out of the TV guide, those were the days.

  • I've always felt that Lenny's version lacked the soul that the TGW's had

  • Young Jack Black played on solo guitar :D:D...

  • Lenny Kravitz did great job covering this song too but I always have loved the original.

  • There isn't any good music like this anymore. What a shame. The Guess Who were one of my favorite bands. Love them!!

  • MY GRANDFATHER PRODUCED THIS SONG!!!

  • Aside from Lanny McDonald, this is the most recognizable mustache in Canadian history. The mustache itself has its own postal code and is even admired by the late Louis Riel.

  • @bricabrac85 - what about freddy mercurys 'stache? - pretty recognizable too!

  • @beavis4play Freddy Mercury wasn't Canadian.

  • @bricabrac85 or Neil Peart's, circa 1976!

  • excellent! Lenny what's his name is nothing compared to this

  • wow, I didnt know that Burt Reynolds was the lead singer for the guess who! I guess I guessed who is the front man for the group now!!!!

    J/K these guys rock!

  • Saw these guys in the 90s and they were great then too believe it or not!

  • Good Canadian boys from Winnepeg

  • Check out the Toronto Sars gig version, it rocks

  • cool version, nothing gay as lenny's one xD

  • great vocals!! only knew lennys version.. but this tops it... jeah oldschool ftw :) got some feeling of old ozzy osbourne iron men... untouchable :D

  • I like it. Quiet crowd though!

  • Reminds me of Little Chubby ;P

  • why is the crowd not going crazy???

  • This was only the Guess Who by name only..without Randy Bachman, it was really just the Cummings band. And there is something about these guys which is lacking. Still sounds good though, but not as significant a sound. It looks like they are only going through the motions.. no real feeling behind the music.

  • very beautiful! a real classic...great vocals...superb guitar playing...

    gilventuraboc

  • very beautiful! a real classic...great vocals...superb guitar playing

  • this is f***ing great

  • I can't believe these snide comments I'm reading. My God, who do you think you're talking about? This is THE GUESS WHO. Get a clue.

  • Somehow the suit and the look transform it into a Vegas cover band. Still great, though.

  • he is Rob Zombie's dad

  • @everettd89 ..no fucking way!!!!

  • who would have ever thought he'd be the father of Rob Zombie... :)

  • @everettd89 They share the same last name, "Cummings", but I'm from the town where Rob Zombie was born and raised and I know for a fact that his dad was a furniture salesman.

  • yummy

  • im going to grow my mustash like that cool

  • I want that suit!!!!

  • I want that suit!!!!

  • the kyle glass project finally made it lol the guitar player looks like jack black XD

  • this song goes out to the countless men divorced by their american wives...

they lose custody of their children, they have to pay outrageous child support and a lifetime of alimony while her ex-wife kicks him out of his house and moves in with her new boyfriend...

and she will also get the brand new car...

the ex-wife of course will not marry her boyfriend because she will forfeit the alimony...

THAT YOUR AMERICAN WOMAN...IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THAT, THEN JUST HUMP AND DUMP HER...DON'T MARRY HER

  • @BetaDeltaCebu This is not about American women. This is an anti-Vietnam war protest song. The 'American woman' referred to in the song is the statue of liberty.

  • when i first heard this in the 70's it blew me away then it still does it is a briliant recpord

  • this should be our anthem!

  • If led zeppelin were sponsored by c+a

  • The song was supposed to be about The Statue Of Liberty. He was from Canada.

  • The song was supposed to be about The Statue Of Liberty.

  • Guter Song, aber die Typen sehen sch... aus !

  • This song was 40 years ago no.32 in the german year-end-charts #the #guess #who

  • this is blowin my mind

  • Good old old Bert the guess who rock.

  • @eastsidebeastkidx Burton's got a new record!

  • Burton Cummings.....I guess you could just say Burton Reynolds

  • Badass

  • Canadian man, actually saying, get away???He must like us Canadian folk!! haha! Even back in the day!!

  • Burton looks bit too dapper in this performance LOL, but he sure has the pipes.

  • hahha austin powers ;)

  • This is a very underrated band.

  • WOoo this song is Soooo SPOooky! O.@

  • Randy left the band before this was filmed. He couldn't find a leisure suit that would fit him.

  • which one is randy bachman?

  • sexiest song ever made

  • All that's missing is the drool.

  • Kurt was a great guitar player and songwriter but he looks like retard in this video.

  • cummings is the best of winnipeg!

  • I Diddnt Know Bert Reynolds had a band lol xD

  • @FatSalinio Lol Yeah me neither. What was Burton Cummings doing. He must have been watching too many Smokey and the Bandit movies back then.

  • @FatSalinio thats funny....but they do rock

  • The Tony Clifton Band

  • @FatSalinio hahahahahha

  • @FatSalinio lol

  • @FatSalinio Yes, and Dom Deluise is playing lead!

  • @FatSalinio Mr. Cummings does kind of look like Burt Reynolds in this; Well, did you know that this was the number one tune on The Billboard Pop Charts when Tina Fey was born? Neat, isn't it?

  • @FatSalinio ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @FatSalinio

    Burt can't sing.

  • canuck rock!!!

  • What about the looks of Cummings....he is one of the greatest singer-songwriter-piano-players (plays saxophone too, on "Life on the bloodstream"from the album "So long Bannayne"(1971) Randy Bachman is his mate again, and they keep on making music...still going strong. Kurt Winter was OK, Yes, it's a pity he died so young. The drummer Gary Peterson - great drummer - is still with them, from the beginning.

  • Needs the overdrive pedal!

  • Kurt Winter was a great guitarist. More credit to him!

  • @boelin He pretty much taught Neil Young how to play.

  • Obviously after Bachman left the group. If Bachman and Cummings could have gotten along better they would have been a major, major super group, ah well, they were still great. Bachman and Cummings appear to have made up now too.

  • i'll bet those guys got more ass than a bath tub
