If you know Thomas Dolby, you might relate him to many artists, like maybe Laurie Anderson. But instead, a whole spitload of exactly the same songs as in the Human League mix:
David Bowie: Space Oddity, Starman, Life on Mars.
ABC: When Smokey Sings, Poison Arrow.
Duran F'ing Duran?: Wild Boys, Ordinary World, Come Undone and Hungry Like the Wolf.
And TD has about as much to do with Roxy Music as he does Dolby Industries
Music of the Cold War....eerie and well done. In the 1980's, there was a very real contest under the Atlantic, with the Royal and US Navies on one side and the Soviet Navy on the other, each trying to track the other's submarines.
Thomas Dolby was the guy I always wanted to date, but was never smart or dumpy enough to get his attention.... how apropros that all these smart guys cheat with bombshell girls like myself when they get older..... SNOBS !!!
The riff in this song sounds a lot like that sound effect that they use to play on the Six Million Dollar Man (TV show) when Steve Austin used his bionic legs to run fast. The sound effect would accompany the slow motion footage of him as he ran.
Where is Thomas Dolby, nowadays? He is a fantastic songwriter who, perhaps, didn't have enough confidence in his brilliant musical ability! Is he still only doing private gigs for his mates in LA while "podcasting" at the same time or does he still actually tour?!
Absolutely awesome song - moody and melancholic. I think he wasn't just singing about his uncle who died in a sub accident, but also lamenting the decline of the British Empire.
I SO need to re-check my database on this. I thought Dolby was this synth geek, nobody ever mentioned that he was kinda hot. I won't be rubbin' one out over this fossil, but it is kewl 2 know where synths came from. Oh, and revehent, pass me that bong!
A song that makes you think about life. just turn out the lights, turn on the lava lamp ...and listen to real music ! throw in alittle TALK TALK and Flock of seagulls and Gary numan for the ultimate relaxation.
Bigger question yet: what happened to my own life, since I am posting such ridiculous comments here that don't even have anything to do with one of my all time favorites, Thomas dolby? T.D. so sorry, didn't mean to disrespect the submarine. But I'm so old now that my judgement has been impaired.
Yes indeed, Downey's finest cinematic achievements was in Weird Science, although I cannot remember his name - but the real question is what happened to Ilan Mitchell Smith?! Never heard from him after The Wild Life.....??? He was cute too.
It is a very nostalgic song. I think it is because it is a nuclear submarine and at the ends it sinks forever and "the winterboys are drinking heavy water"
@samhellion Then you'll probably like the conning tower mock-up...........bye bye Empire....bye bye ...............read Sisters Of Mercy....Lucretia my reflection
I stayed at the Yankee Sub School over-nite on a stop over last spring. What a cool place. one must have large gonads to serve in the Silent Service whilst listening to Thomas Dolby.
I've got a question. What is the dude with the mallots banging on? That's no drum machine... and it's not even in time with the beat. Is he just there for a light show?
well, it looks like it's for aesthetics, but knowing dolby it might be a percussion synth of some kind. if you want to check something out that's on the forefront of electronic music technology, do a search on youtube for "reactable demo". i saw bjork live this past year, and she had someone using one---they're amazing.
I don't really know if that's it. The music doesn't seem to be as out of sync as that dude's drumming. He's got an entire drum synth right next to him. He should beat on that instead.
It is definitely just for show, it is not an actual instrument by any means...even Dolby doesnt always play what you are "hearing"...his music is well composed but it is all synth...half of what you think is being controlled in real time is actually pre rendered....it is still genius nonetheless and so far ahead of its time
IIRC he used to use a PPG sequencer to trigger Simmons drums, so possibly the little light show was sequenced by the same gear. The drums also sound very close to the album version, but most of the other parts don't. I'd say that the guitar, vocals, and some of the keyboards were live in the video, at least. :-)
TD always says he hated Blinded me with science out of all the songs he wrote. But Golden Age of Wireless is defintely in my top albums. Every song was great. I still have the original tape I bought in the fall of '82. The tape still has versions of songs not available on CD.
His first album was soo complete.. you had to listen to the whole thing. The radio theme was awesome.. each song built upon the other. its a shame he's only remembered for Blinded me with science.
One of Our Submarines is one of the classics of the 80s. It's a shame people only remember Thomas Dolby for his novelty tune, She Blinded Me with Science or his tour with Def Leppard. Submarines blends a haunting melody, effective vocals, and Dolby's experimental keyboard. Great song. Easily in my 80s Top 10.

BMWS rocks, Submarines GREAT early stuff, But my ALL TIME FAV TD album will be Aliens Ate My Buick !!! Every song a keeper! Budapest by Blimp has this phenomonal 'Eargasm' ...take a good listen, its so smooth then explosive then calm at the end.. its like sex !!
This is from Thomas' semi-official 1981 release, "Live Wireless" - Can someone please post the entire concert on one of the torrent sites like thetradersden dot org, or demonoid dot com? please!!! thank you.
i cannot believe that thomas dolby had a video for this song!!! wait a minute, this is him live in concert when mtv used to show artists/groups live in concert late saturday night!!! check out the drum machine the guy is playing in the back!!! thomas was one of the first artists to use film projection into his live show!!!
Seriously, these artist mixes.

OH MY God! This video rocks. Poor TD for only being known for BMWS and not a kick ass song like this.

I love this song!
But HOLY CRAP I really hate those stupid intros that people attach onto the beginning of these music videos.

My favorite song by Dolby and this is the original video. Hednoize wanted to do a cover of this for their album back in 1998.

No it was his uncle who died in a sub. Great song!

If my memory serves me correctly, his grand father was in WWII and the sub that he was on went down in the North sea. This was his muse.

Yeah that's a Simmons drum kit. All the rage in the 80's new wave and new romantic era.
