  • Seriously, these artist mixes.

If you know Thomas Dolby, you might relate him to many artists, like maybe Laurie Anderson. But instead, a whole spitload of exactly the same songs as in the Human League mix:

David Bowie: Space Oddity, Starman, Life on Mars.

ABC: When Smokey Sings, Poison Arrow.

Duran F'ing Duran?: Wild Boys, Ordinary World, Come Undone and Hungry Like the Wolf.

And TD has about as much to do with Roxy Music as he does Dolby Industries

  • Yes Iron man was in the Movie Weird science with a bra over his head and his big line was " I'm shitting in my pants" LOL

  • or perhaps and more probably, he was / they are gay. WORD.

  • Thomas Dolby was the guy I always wanted to date, but was never smart or dumpy enough to get his attention.... how apropros that all these smart guys cheat with bombshell girls like myself when they get older..... SNOBS !!!

  • @Boredin81 Post pics please!

  • @Boredin81

LOL! Bombshell like yourself, huh? I'll say one thing, you sound pretty self confident.

    Down periscope.

  • although I like the backing guitars in this version better!..hehehe

  • if you think this is good,?....get the studio version!.....my god....shivers! rock-on!

  • Back in the 80's I had an acoustic version of this song on a cassette+it was VERY ghostly+haunting, wish I could find that version.

  • this one, screen kiss and i just want the keys to your ferrari are some of his best work.

  • I love this song, but what is it about?

  • Thomas Dolby's best!

  • the extra bit at the start - completely unrelated - is from a film called "Weird Science"

  • that intro video is funny as hell

  • Love the mid 80's sound of this song...spooky vibe like it's a song coming from outer space.

  • @rowdymax1 the reason it sounds like mid 80s is cuz it was from the mid 80s-u should try another of his called airwaves©

  • More than one of the US's Submarines are missing and they can't find any of them

even if they have two foot letters written on them that says they've been condemned

  • Thomas Dolby and Alton Brown (of "Good Eats and "Iron Chef America) are IN FACT...the same person...do the reshearch (insert "CSI sound").

  • @Tamerlain impossible this guy is dead from what i heard.

  • @gokartbuyer

Dolby is still alive, it's just his hair that has passed on to another plane of existence.

  • My, Oh, My, My Empire!

  • love this song.....

  • I miss this type of musical artists... Nowadays... well.... seems only a beat and recycle of old songs... very lacking of creative powers.

  • "Winter boys , drinking heavy water from a spout"

    What a great mind

  • that didn't sound right...so I looked it up to be sure.

"drinking heavy water from a stone"

  • Did the 6 million dollar man sue him?

  • I Love Alton Brown. GOOD EATS! :)

  • @Tamerlain is that really him?!

  • genius!

  • The riff in this song sounds a lot like that sound effect that they use to play on the Six Million Dollar Man (TV show) when Steve Austin used his bionic legs to run fast. The sound effect would accompany the slow motion footage of him as he ran.

  • not even close

  • True that; it does sound like that song,

    "One Of Our Bionic Dudes"

    by Oscar Goldman

  • New TD album due early next year I think, will be nice to hear some new songs

    :-)

  • Where is Thomas Dolby, nowadays? He is a fantastic songwriter who, perhaps, didn't have enough confidence in his brilliant musical ability! Is he still only doing private gigs for his mates in LA while "podcasting" at the same time or does he still actually tour?!

  • Absolutely awesome song - moody and melancholic. I think he wasn't just singing about his uncle who died in a sub accident, but also lamenting the decline of the British Empire.

  • You got it in one "Re - T.Dolby/ One of our Submarines", I agree. It's quintessentially British!

  • this is a submarine version of peter schilling's major tom. it has the same vibe. you have the same feeling when the song is over

  • one of my fav track of all time. Simly wonderful as is the album. I mean the bass is superb

  • I SO need to re-check my database on this. I thought Dolby was this synth geek, nobody ever mentioned that he was kinda hot. I won't be rubbin' one out over this fossil, but it is kewl 2 know where synths came from. Oh, and revehent, pass me that bong!

  • A song that makes you think about life. just turn out the lights, turn on the lava lamp ...and listen to real music ! throw in alittle TALK TALK and Flock of seagulls and Gary numan for the ultimate relaxation.

  • Comment removed

  • Ahh, Gary Numan Down in the Park. Yes, I shall turn on my lava lamp now. Also, check out some Kate Bush, Experiment IV. With House!

  • Don't forget "Are Friends Electric?"

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome song!!! Simply beautiful and intense.

  • Bigger question yet: what happened to my own life, since I am posting such ridiculous comments here that don't even have anything to do with one of my all time favorites, Thomas dolby? T.D. so sorry, didn't mean to disrespect the submarine. But I'm so old now that my judgement has been impaired.

  • dont worry you are safe we are here there are more of us than you think :) m48 here age is irellevant

  • Yes indeed, Downey's finest cinematic achievements was in Weird Science, although I cannot remember his name - but the real question is what happened to Ilan Mitchell Smith?! Never heard from him after The Wild Life.....??? He was cute too.

  • Dolby Is A Genuis with his creativity and originality! Sheer Brilliance....

One Of his best! 5 STARS

  • Thomas Dolby was definitely one of the keyboard prodigies of the 80's

  • such a sad song

  • It is a very nostalgic song. I think it is because it is a nuclear submarine and at the ends it sinks forever and "the winterboys are drinking heavy water"

  • Where can I get this concert? It's sooo nice.

  • I think the gents on the first part of this vid is from "Weird Science" the movie with Rob Downey Jr. and Mike anthony Hall

  • They are

  • not rob downey

he wasn't in Weird Science! AMH is the bomb!

  • Yes Robert downey Jr. is one that wears the bra on his head and says "I'm shitting in my pants."About 25 years ago.

  • Only knew his Science song, this is way better. and I served in subs!

  • You should check Thomas Dolby song called " I scare Myself"

  • @samhellion most of his best work never got airplay

  • @rmherbert1957 ur completely right about that-thank god for albums so at least u could hear the rest of the good stuff©

  • @samhellion Then you'll probably like the conning tower mock-up...........bye bye Empire....bye bye ...............read Sisters Of Mercy....Lucretia my reflection

  • Part of my Navy career was in the Submarine Service. I remember when this song came out. I found it particularly haunting.

  • Never knew this song existed until today. Thanks ValorOfSoul for posting it and educating those of use who have only known TD for "Science".

  • Excellent!! "Golden Age of Wireless is a great album. This song was always my favorite. Definately haunting! Tommy is a genius. he rocks {hand clap}

  • "The Golden Age of the Wireless" version is just soooo much slicker...and haunting!

    Still, this is ok!

  • Truly wonderful - one of the videos I never saw in the era itself. (and his makeup is done just right too)

  • This song used to creep me out a bit when I was younger XDD;

But now I see it is a cool song C:

  • I stayed at the Yankee Sub School over-nite on a stop over last spring. What a cool place. one must have large gonads to serve in the Silent Service whilst listening to Thomas Dolby.

  • I went thru sub school groton in the USN. bunch of crap. I filed for z94 and quit the navy.

  • This is one of Dolby's best production. Kudos for him.

  • this is one great mother fucking Catholic of a song. Love it.

    Cx

  • He wrote this song about an uncle of his who was in the Royal Navy in WW2 on a submarine but unfortunatly it ran aground and he drowned.

  • Thomas Dolby, the masterpiece!!

  • great song!!!

  • I've got a question. What is the dude with the mallots banging on? That's no drum machine... and it's not even in time with the beat. Is he just there for a light show?

  • well, it looks like it's for aesthetics, but knowing dolby it might be a percussion synth of some kind. if you want to check something out that's on the forefront of electronic music technology, do a search on youtube for "reactable demo". i saw bjork live this past year, and she had someone using one---they're amazing.

  • if you watch carefully, the audio isn't in sync with the video, that's why the light-mallet-thing looks like it's not doing anything useful.

  • I don't really know if that's it. The music doesn't seem to be as out of sync as that dude's drumming. He's got an entire drum synth right next to him. He should beat on that instead.

  • It is definitely just for show, it is not an actual instrument by any means...even Dolby doesnt always play what you are "hearing"...his music is well composed but it is all synth...half of what you think is being controlled in real time is actually pre rendered....it is still genius nonetheless and so far ahead of its time

  • IIRC he used to use a PPG sequencer to trigger Simmons drums, so possibly the little light show was sequenced by the same gear. The drums also sound very close to the album version, but most of the other parts don't. I'd say that the guitar, vocals, and some of the keyboards were live in the video, at least. :-)

  • I really liked the weird science intro. Thanks for posting this video.

  • The intro kind of reminds me of the theme for The Six Million Dollar Man.

  • Yeah, it does

  • This song is a nod to Dolby's uncle that died in a submarine accident.

  • Definately..........much like the horns in Peter Gabriel's "sledge hammer" sound like the horns in "superstition".

  • I luv that beat

  • great song..THANX for posting it

  • Thomas Dolby is so great... the greatest musician of the 80s ?

  • Flock O' Seagulls, mofo...

  • Or, Burning Sensations, or, Oingo Boingo...

Hell Or even Devo, or Gary Numan...

    The 80's RULE

  • Let's face it, there was far too many good bands back then. Hard to believe that was nearly 30 years ago... God I feel old.

  • Aye sunny speak up!

    You ain't kiddin!...........

  • I am missing the debate, yet very happy to listen to music instead.

Thank you for posting this song.

Years later, I will probably still agree :)

  • ahahaaa.....I am done with the debates....I won't watch a single one....it's time to go 3rd Party...

    Yeah great song!

  • I fucking LOVE that spin he does at 4:02! One of the greatest songs ever.

  • I LUV THAT BEAT

  • BTW..not only are the vocals live, but most of the imstrumentation.

Some of the "effects" and noises are obviously taped.

  • Could be a soundboard recording, explaining the crispness

  • The vocal track is indeed live.

I have Live Wireless on Beta!

I remember I had to order it through a local store that sold videos back in the old days.

  • The vocal track, at least, sounds as if recorded live for this, no? Great tune and vid!

  • This is probably my favorite Thomas Dolby song. I think TD and Alton Brown are the same person! :D

  • Anyone know if "Live Wireless" (the concert this video came from) is out on DVD yet? I would think Dolby's got the rights to it.

  • Budapest by Blimp is another great TD song.

  • don't forget europa

  • TD always says he hated Blinded me with science out of all the songs he wrote. But Golden Age of Wireless is defintely in my top albums. Every song was great. I still have the original tape I bought in the fall of '82. The tape still has versions of songs not available on CD.

  • I want to climb inside this song.

  • His first album was soo complete.. you had to listen to the whole thing. The radio theme was awesome.. each song built upon the other. its a shame he's only remembered for Blinded me with science.

  • One of Our Submarines is one of the classics of the 80s. It's a shame people only remember Thomas Dolby for his novelty tune, She Blinded Me with Science or his tour with Def Leppard. Submarines blends a haunting melody, effective vocals, and Dolby's experimental keyboard. Great song. Easily in my 80s Top 10.

  • I always loved the sound-effects background track.. it kind of foreshadows the whole Industrial era.

  • rereading the posts--Perhaps your comment was not meant to dis the music..aactually its pretty unclear--at least you have learn to communicate your ideas a little more clearly. Who is your rant directed at --Dolby or Sonnyfunk??

  • O.K.--Wolfnwren--I CARE--Why?? Because I appreciate good music, and this definitely qualifies. It is WAY more original that most of the crap that makes the charts. What of worthy note have you created as of late??

  • that beat is sick one of his besy song and the public only knows him for blinding me with science what a shame.

  • Makes you want to slap in "Fast Times @ Ridgemont High" or "The Breakfast Club" in to the VCR. Sigh, Phoebe Cates topless...

  • WOW This just took me back to the Panno D'Ors and Vans slip ons. If I just still had those parachute pants and a 28 waist....

  • this song is....epic

Thomas Dolby is the master of synthesizers.

Reminds me of Gary Numan, except richer music, and voice.

  • Great musician. I have all his albums.

  • Indeed I have, I've been round his house. His daughter Talia is my best friend.

    His music is fantastic :D

  • who fucking cares?

  • Re: who fucking cares?

Wolfnwren I don't know if you are depressed or having mental issues and if your question is real? But I think you will see that very many people care except for your ignorant ass....

  • I highly doubt that a 37 year old man in great threat of losing his own hair (with probably with not a creative bone is his skinny white body), should be focusing on such shite! Listen to the man's music you tool!

  • So,the question that MUST be asked, did YOU listen to the music??

Fuckin great album and great fuckin songs, what the fuck has hair loss got to do with song writing talent(me thinks a tad jealous thing here, baldy!!)

he shaves his head,he makes GREAT music(if you don't like it what the fuck are you doin lookin up his music in Youtube..you tube!!

  • Fuck u wolfnwren, this songs great, your the tool for typing such shit on utube about a bloody good song!!!

  • I was referring to bachadaboy, but thanks for sharing....

  • Sorry, but when you say "probably with not a creative bone is his skinny white body" your talking about Thomas Dolby. Therefore your referring Thomas Dolby. But I dont understand what you mean when you say "he should be focusing on such shite" what do you mean?

  • I am NOT talking about Thomas Dobly, (Thomas is NOT 37 yrs old). As I said, I was referring to bachadaboy1. Please re-read the thread thoroughly and wait before you react. Thomas is one of my heroes. Okay, this conversation is boring now so let's stop shall we? Bye bye.

  • Im sorry, wolfnwren. I misunderstood your comment. Please forgive me.

  • You are forgiven. Go in peace! ; )

  • Yeah !!!!! I need to fire up my Jupiter-8 and Wavecomputer.

  • i never really liked 80s synth pop stuff

but this is just amazing and artistic

  • This reminds me of the good old days and 92.7 WLIR!!!

  • TELL ME ABOUT IT!

I miss that radio station while i was living in Uniondale.

  • Great station. I miss it too. Listening to LIR on the way to Malibu on friday nights.

  • My station for this stuff back in the day was KQAK 99FM..THE QUAKE in San Francisco. I really miss that station!

  • me too.

  • this is the song that i though was the best on his album, very haunting, and dramatic

  • Waited more than twenty years to see this, and now I've seen it. Thanks very much for posting it. There was another version on this song, a bit more soft and atmospheric. It was on an EP of four singles. I really love that version.

  • classic dolby e should av had more recognition

  • so many years since I have seen this...thanks!

  • GENIUS.

  • my grandfather was on a submarine for 5 years in the navy...he said that he saw things that only this song could describe

  • Thomas is still one of my fave electronic/synth pop/new wave artist from the 80's!!!

  • Wow! The first time I heard this song was on the King Biscuit(sp) Flower Hour. When The Golden Age of Wireless was brand new. It's my favorite song by Thomas Dolby. I grew up on a farm, and we had no cable T.V. This is the first time I've seen the video. Awesome!! Thanks for posting it!!

  • dolby and his crew awsome fantastic great timeless inspiring

  • luv it luv it luv it!

never forgot this one from the 1st time i heard it on radio. My top 5 all time 80s songs

  • Thomas at his very best!! Thank you for posting. I like his other stuff, too (Golden Age of Wireless and Hyperactive).

  • Thankyou so much for this. Great great music. I wish I could hear it better without turning way up

  • Arguably his best song from the album. Unarguably a reason I must find a turntable so as to play said album again.

  • man, i remember this video when i was a little little boy growing' up watching mtv when it had the original "fab five" vj's and used to show real freakin' music videos at the time;p!!! thomas dolby was one of my favorite synth pop/new wave artists that influenced many of the artists that are out today such as trent reznor of nine inch nails, filter, charlie clouser, lustmord, and even marilyn manson....

  • Great song. What synth is he playing? Is that a Jupiter 8?

  • indeed

  • Good eye! That is in fact a Jupiter 8, although TD used a lot of the PPG stuff as well...

  • Bless you.

  • OH MY God! This video rocks. Poor TD for only being known for BMWS and not a kick ass song like this.

  • BMWS rocks, Submarines GREAT early stuff, But my ALL TIME FAV TD album will be Aliens Ate My Buick !!! Every song a keeper! Budapest by Blimp has this phenomonal 'Eargasm' ...take a good listen, its so smooth then explosive then calm at the end.. its like sex !!

  • This song kicks major 80's butt! I love this song and it brings back a lot of memories!! Love ya TD!!

  • I love this song!

But HOLY CRAP I really hate those stupid intros that people attach onto the beginning of these music videos.

  • MookyChick i totally agree with you on that one!!

  • possibly the best synthpop song ever???...yup

  • This is from Thomas' semi-official 1981 release, "Live Wireless" - Can someone please post the entire concert on one of the torrent sites like thetradersden dot org, or demonoid dot com? please!!! thank you.

  • this is one of the best pop concoctions of the 80s

  • My favorite song by Dolby and this is the original video. Hednoize wanted to do a cover of this for their album back in 1998.

  • kinda sounds like the theme from 'six million dollar man' lol

  • this song oddly reminds me of the song Wishing by AFOS

  • No it was his uncle who died in a sub. Great song!

  • If my memory serves me correctly, his grand father was in WWII and the sub that he was on went down in the North sea. This was his muse.

  • Great stuff, mystical

  • this is great

  • i cannot believe that thomas dolby had a video for this song!!! wait a minute, this is him live in concert when mtv used to show artists/groups live in concert late saturday night!!! check out the drum machine the guy is playing in the back!!! thomas was one of the first artists to use film projection into his live show!!!

  • Yeah that's a Simmons drum kit. All the rage in the 80's new wave and new romantic era.
