they're singing about washing clothes simply cause this kind of songs were sang by the women in Karelia while they were doing their household tasks. So the lyrics were often very quotidien, dealing their everyday routines. Of course there are exceptions, songs telling a certain story, discribing the nature etc.
So do women now sing songs about watching crap on the telly, trying to find the big christmas toy for their kids, and having a crisis when IKEA runs out of Billy bookcases.
reminds me of a lot of old Scottish songs to do with weaving etc - they need the rythm to work to
