Am I the only fan NOT against this remake? Seriously I consider Akira my favorite movie of all time. If this is done right, even with white actors, it could work. Give it a chance guys. I am from Japan. I think its OK to have Chinese or Korean if they cant find Japanese. But even better is to use Japanese actors from Japan. The best choice in my opinion is Jin Akanishi, Joe Odagiri, Hiro Mizushima. They are young and cool actors. They can play the young characters easily. They can speak English. Hiro Mizushima's English is perfectly American with not accent. Jin Akanishi is star in next Keanu Reeves movie of samurai. But too bad I heard Akira actors will be white. Its bad idea.
It's been shut down for now as they can't come to terms on the budget. The new proposal is $60 - 70 million USD. It's still on the drawing board though but with the budget reduced it's almost guaranteed to be worse than a steaming pile of crap.
I would hope they would change their minds on Kenada being an older guy that owns a bar and stick with what's given in either the manga or anime.

Harry Shum Jr is tall and skinny, and could be good for one of the gang members.

However, if we're going for Caucasian casting, then I'd like to see Mason Vale Cotton as Takashi, Joshua Erenberg or Rico Rodriguez as Masaru and Bob Hoskins as Nezu. And a REALLY good child actress for Kiyoko.

Justin Chon's a good actor and could make a decent Tetsuo.
Harry Shum Jr is tall and skinny, and could be good for one of the gang members.
I'd like to see Ellen Wong as Kei, Jordan Nagai as Takashi and John Cho or Jay Chou as Kaneda.
However, if we're going for Caucasian casting, then I'd like to see Mason Vale Cotton as Takashi, Joshua Erenberg or Rico Rodriguez as Masaru and Bob Hoskins as Nezu. And a REALLY good child actress for Kiyoko.

But hey, it's all about making money, aint it? It's never about the craft anymore that really counted and made movies and the whole cinema-going experience a treat. A good remake depends on the concept, not the success or massive fanbase of the original.

@MrNathanialVictor I'm not saying that all reamkes should be exactly the same as the original, however I believe that a remake of any film, tv series or so on should stay true to it's roots in a way in order to thrive. But not overdoing it, i might add, as that would lead to a pointless mistake like Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic thriller "Psycho". But I still think that setting AKIRA in the states may a risk, but thats just me talking.

WAIT!!!! The "new" Akira is supposed to take place in "new" Manhattan...So why are the 2 lead roles being cast to white guys. The only white people that live in Manhattan are RICH, and they would have moved out the second anything bad happened. The only white guys who would realistically be left would be Guidos and some Jewish dudes. They need to cast some Black guys or Dominican guys if they want this movie to be taken seriously and not be another "Captain America".

I really wish there was less "business" in movies and more "art". Stop shoehorning horrible casting choices into movies just because those actors happen to be popular right now. Spiderman, Ghost Rider, and now Akira. It's a movie about teenagers fer fuksake, use people that are at least under 30!
