The thing I like is that every live version of a song he does is like a brand new song. Nothing is the same. I used to hate live performances because they sounded so different from the studio version (in a bad way). Now that I have discovered artists like Tom Waits I almost prefer the live performances. If he ever tours again Im going the guy is awesome.
@fergaloleary Hearing the Captain's music is what brought us this side of Waits. Listen to the albums he did early on, up to the beginning of the 80s, and you'll hear what we'd keep hearing had his wife not played him some Beefheart.
@Zigiwy (I'm just agreeing with your question to LochlanachViking, fergaloleary).
From Waits' wiki page.
Tom Waits' shift in artistic direction, starting with 1983's Swordfishtrombones, was, Waits claims, a result of his wife Kathleen Brennan introducing him to Van Vliet's music.[149] "Once you've heard Beefheart," said Waits, "it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood."
@Zigiwy "it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood." i fully agree with this and that kathleen opened waits up . in my view a more expressive and mature side of waits' music
I hope it was helpful, please reply me when you have listened some songs of the CDs I mentioned, I'm looking foward to your opinion. Cheers. Have fun with all of the Waits' songs. Cheers.
@junkdevil1 I loved swordfishtrombone and mule variations. But really, Tom Waits isn't an artist you just listen everything he has made to. You need to start from one end to the other to really appreciate the 40 years of evolution he has gone through as an artist =)
@junkdevil1 - such variations in genres, if you like this type stuff, my favorite is Bone Machine (1992) but look back a couple decades also. He can croon, wail, break you heart and be silly. Check out 'Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again' - so much great music.
No, dear: this is cabaret, revamped according to Waits' personal specifications. If you listen to Waits' debut album, and then his albums from Swordfishtrombones till Mule Variations, you'll notice.
