  • The thing I like is that every live version of a song he does is like a brand new song. Nothing is the same. I used to hate live performances because they sounded so different from the studio version (in a bad way). Now that I have discovered artists like Tom Waits I almost prefer the live performances. If he ever tours again Im going the guy is awesome.

  • @LochlanachViking captain beefheart a pussy in comparison ?

  • @fergaloleary Hearing the Captain's music is what brought us this side of Waits. Listen to the albums he did early on, up to the beginning of the 80s, and you'll hear what we'd keep hearing had his wife not played him some Beefheart.

  • @Zigiwy (I'm just agreeing with your question to LochlanachViking, fergaloleary).

    From Waits' wiki page.

Tom Waits' shift in artistic direction, starting with 1983's Swordfishtrombones, was, Waits claims, a result of his wife Kathleen Brennan introducing him to Van Vliet's music.[149] "Once you've heard Beefheart," said Waits, "it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood."

  • @Zigiwy "it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood." i fully agree with this and that kathleen opened waits up . in my view a more expressive and mature side of waits' music

  • rifles don't shoot shells, shotguns do.

  • i have to believe that this guy is where christian bale got his inspiration for his batman role

  • 0... and i say again. 0 dislikes. just sayin...

  • @muzicsalesman I almost hung a dislike just to be the sole dissenting contrarian. Don't tempt me like that...

  • @KingOfWhiteTrash1 haha, noted.

  • hey , ive just discovered Tom Waits properly - and he is a GENIUS can anyone recomend the first couple of albums i should get??

  • I'd start with:

    - Big Time

    then go on with:

    - Heartattack and Vine

    after straight to:

-Glitter and Doom tour 2008 CD.

    and:

    -Orphans: Brawlers(Disc1 of 3)

I hope it was helpful, please reply me when you have listened some songs of the CDs I mentioned, I'm looking foward to your opinion. Cheers. Have fun with all of the Waits' songs. Cheers.

  • Mule Variations from 1999 is my favourite

  • @junkdevil1 I loved swordfishtrombone and mule variations. But really, Tom Waits isn't an artist you just listen everything he has made to. You need to start from one end to the other to really appreciate the 40 years of evolution he has gone through as an artist =)

  • @junkdevil1 - such variations in genres, if you like this type stuff, my favorite is Bone Machine (1992) but look back a couple decades also. He can croon, wail, break you heart and be silly. Check out 'Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again' - so much great music.

  • @junkdevil1 SWORDFISHTROMBONES. HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT.

  • I'm gonna whittle you into kindlin'!!!

  • notice how the song seems to change tone and feeling 3 times in the first minute. I love this man.

  • You can't not love him :D

  • this is real music

  • @jesjes21

No, dear: this is cabaret, revamped according to Waits' personal specifications. If you listen to Waits' debut album, and then his albums from Swordfishtrombones till Mule Variations, you'll notice.

  • This is bind blowing! This man is one of the greatest singers and showmen of all time!!!!

  • genious IS mysterious ... the man is the gristle in the wit of lateral thinking... no bubble gum pops from those steel sharp chops ... thank god ...va va voom!

  • cool

  • great vid, waits is awesome

  • wonderful!
